00:00just what a professional performance, what a gutty performance.
00:04My God, what a warrior.
00:05Yeah.
00:05Just, you love to see stuff like that,
00:09especially with someone who just got to town.
00:11You're out there with who knows who out there running around out there as weapons.
00:16What a game plan.
00:18What a performance.
00:19And then just to hang in there, like the mental fortitude that this took
00:23for that entire team to do that.
00:25I don't know, man.
00:26My head does first go to Kyle Shanahan.
00:30And I'll stick to the statement I made on the crossover.
00:32I'll trade him for no one.
00:33I'll trade him for no one in this league.
00:35Yeah, and I don't think that they will trade him for anyone,
00:38although the Raiders famously traded John Gruden and got a pretty nice haul back
00:42so you can trade a coach if you want.
00:44But it's not only the play calling, and I thought last night the timeout usage
00:49and the game management and all the rest of it was elite.
00:52It's the fact that he took his team down there broken and battered
00:56with guys who maybe didn't even know each other,
00:58and yet he got them in a mind space to where he had them thinking like truthfully
01:04and accurately that nobody believed that they could go out there and do it.
01:08And they went out there, and they did the damn thing, and they did it his way,
01:12which is opening drive, ball control, we score, shut them down, get the ball back,
01:18ball control, second drive, we score.
01:20Now it's 14-0, and so you had to hold on for dear life a little bit.
01:25And then fingernails from there forward, quite frankly.
01:27But you did it that way, and you did it with a backup quarterback,
01:30and you didn't have your two receivers, actually your three receivers,
01:33and you didn't have your tight end, whatever.
01:35You didn't have enough to go out there and win, and then you won.
01:39And you had to do it with extra seven minutes of football,
01:42and the way you went about doing it with your complimentary football.
01:46Your defense was rested, really rested in the first half,
01:50and so when you needed them to pick you up late in the game,
01:54they picked you up big time.
01:55Let me ask you this, and this is actually something.
01:59Like, when I wake up the next day after you've seen a great show
02:02or you watched a great movie or whatever,
02:05that's sometimes how I judge a great show is, like,
02:09when you wake up the next day, what pops to mind?
02:14Because a lot of different shows can be entertaining in the moment,
02:17but do they sustain?
02:19Do they stick with you?
02:20So go get a night's rest.
02:22Let the alcohol wear off, if you had any.
02:25And then you wake up, and you're like, okay, is this still with me?
02:29And so one of the things I would love to hear from people today,
02:328 at 8, 9-5-7, 9-5-70, when you think back to the game,
02:37what's the visual?
02:38What's the first thing that pops to your head when I ask you,
02:41what'd you see last night?
02:43What stands out to you?
02:45I'd say first and foremost, it is Matt Jones on the ground,
02:50grabbing his knee 11 different times.
02:53That would be the number one visual because every time that you saw it,
02:57you thought, that's it.
02:58I mean, guess your ligament, it's torn,
03:00and then he would hop and limp and get back to the line of scrimmage,
03:04and then he'd go to the sideline and eat a banana and have electrolytes
03:08and try to vomit, and then, oh, he's coming back in.
03:11And Adrian Martinez had his helmet on eight different times,
03:14and he's thinking, I'm a niner.
03:16I'm about to niner this game.
03:17And it's like, no, take your helmet off, son.
03:20Matt Jones is like the phoenix rising from the ashes.
03:23So my first and foremost image, the way you're laying that out,
03:27the number one visual for me is Mac Jones.
03:31I'll call him Back Jones because he was on his back probably 15 times,
03:35and yet the man just kept getting up.
03:38What a gutty deal, man.
03:40Yeah.
03:40What a cool thing.
03:41What a memorable night.
03:43I mean, it's probably the best night of Mac Jones' career, right?
03:45You would think.
03:46Professional career.
03:47I mean, I know that he's a champion.
03:48It's a playoff game, sure.
03:50Right, but like Thursday Night Football.
03:53Dude, you just went out there on the second-rated television show.
03:56I know it's not TV.
03:57It's streaming.
03:58You know what I'm saying?
03:58Yep.
03:59It's the second most popular thing out there in terms of content,
04:02Thursday Night Football.
04:04Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreet are up in the booth,
04:06and you go out there in an unbelievable sort of visual rivalry,
04:12the brands that are the 49ers and the Rams,
04:15the stadium looking the way it does when it's down there at SoFi.
04:18You went out there.
04:19You grabbed the ball for 342 yards, two touchdowns,
04:22didn't turn the ball over, and you can't walk,
04:25and you're threatening to barf.
04:27I mean, sure, Mac Jones went to the playoffs.
04:30You can't remember who they played or what happened.
04:32Not they lost.
04:33This is the most memorable professional night of Mac Jones' career.
04:37There's no question about it.
04:39He got sacked once, and I'm just looking at the QB hits.
04:42A bad sack, too.
04:42The QB hits number.
04:44Yep.
04:44He got hit five times by Jared Verse.
04:48Just by Verse.
04:49He got hit ten times in totality,
04:51and he probably should have picked up another roughing the passer.
04:55They got one that they called on the Rams.
04:56There was another one that they missed,
04:58and Mac Jones took ten hits,
05:00and all of those hits were absolute devastation hits,
05:04including that first drive in the third quarter.
05:07He got hit, I think, four times on that drive.
05:09I'm glad you brought up Verse, because that guy was all over the screen.
05:13He was just insane.
05:15And I left his name out in the crossover when I did the,
05:19imagine if the Rams came to Levi's with no Stafford, no Adams, no Puka,
05:25no Tutu, no Higbee, and they beat you,
05:29and I left out, actually it should be no Jared Verse either.
05:32Right, because he's Bosa-esque.
05:33He's Bosa.
05:34So imagine that group came to Levi's and beat you.
05:39That is demoralizing.
05:42And that's what the Niners did to the Rams last night.
05:44Are there backups better than the Rams backups?
05:46I don't even know who the hell the Niners or the Rams backups are for all of that.
05:51But that's what the Niners achieved last night.
05:54And that is not a small thing.
05:56That is not a small thing.
05:57What stands out to me, and maybe this will feel a little cookie-cutter,
06:01but, for instance, the play that you brought up, there's Mack Jones on the ground,
06:06or we could even think about, you know, the fumble at the one.
06:10The fumble at the one from Kyron Williams you don't see coming.
06:14As a Niner fan in that moment, you're sitting back in your chair.
06:17Your tail's between your legs a little bit.
06:19You're up.
06:19You're thinking how much time will there be left when they score.
06:21We're going to lose.
06:22Or, you know, maybe Mack can, you know.
06:24A minute.
06:25Like, I forgot how much time was left when that happened.
06:28Only a minute.
06:29And the reason I forgot is because so many things happened after that.
06:33You can't imagine that there was only a minute left to go.
06:37One minute, two seconds when Kyron Williams fumbles at the one-yard line.
06:41That's all that was left.
06:42If he goes in, you're down, assuming the extra point goes in, you're down four.
06:47Mack gets the ball.
06:48He can't walk.
06:49Yes.
06:49Is he allowed to go win the game?
06:50Sure.
06:51But it feels very unlikely in that moment.
06:54And they had one timeout only.
06:55Right.
06:56So, tail between legs, I'm sitting back in my seat like this isn't, this is very unlikely to go well.
07:02So, my memory is actually the overtime play.
07:06Because on fourth and one, even though I'm loving the Rams' chances to convert, I'm sitting forward because who knows.
07:14Maybe they drop a pass.
07:16Maybe somebody busts through the line and gets in Matt Stafford's face or whatever.
07:19And, again, we're down, I want to shout out Sam's Tavern, three blocks from here, was absolutely on fire with Niner fans all night long.
07:29Had lovely Christy to my right and producer Lucas to my left.
07:33And we stood up and they stuffed him and the whole place broke into a beat L.A. chant.
07:39And it was one of those moments where you felt dizzy for a second.
07:43And I'll never forget it.
07:44Week five.
07:45Week five.
07:46Week five.
07:47Dude, not a playoff game.
07:48It's not a playoff game.
07:50It's just week five.
07:51It's a Thursday in October.
07:53And Sam's Tavern's going bananas.
07:56What a night.
07:56I'm watching it with the family on the high holidays.
07:59And, you know, we're going crazy.
08:01And my father-in-law and I each, probably four or five times, was like, well, they're not going to win this game.
08:07Right.
08:08Because how could they win that game?
08:11And fourth and one.
08:12And I was thinking, you know, they should probably kick it, kick it, Rams, and tie it up.
08:17But then you think about what's already happened on a short week.
08:21And if you're McVay, you're thinking, you know what, I don't want to put my defense through another play, another this, another that.
08:28If you pick it up, then you can decide to kick later if you want.
08:31But if you kick it then, the Niners have, I think, still three, three and a half.
08:36Your chances of winning are pretty much gone.
08:38Like, that's why I think.
08:39A little bit, yeah.
08:40And he was asked if he thought about kicking a field goal.
08:42And he flatly was like, no.
08:44That never even crossed my mind.
08:45Because the Niners, even if you stop them, they're probably going to run enough clock to where, I mean, it's going to be hard to win the game if you're the Rams.
08:53I mean, you could still score a touchdown because you're at the 11.
08:56No, I mean, if you kick the field goal right there to make it 26-26, the game continues.
09:01Niners get the ball.
09:02You don't have a ton of timeouts.
09:04You got one.
09:05They have one.
09:05Right.
09:06You're going to run some clock.
09:07You're going to run some clock.
09:08And the worst case, I mean, the best case scenario is you get the ball deep in your own territory with, like, a minute to go in no time.
09:14You're going to have a hard time winning that football game.
09:15It's going to be tough.
09:15Yeah.
09:16There is a two-minute warning, and you do have one timeout.
09:18But I also think that, as a coach, you've got to put yourself in the mind of the players.
09:23And if you're a player and you're 67 minutes into a football game, you've about had it.
09:30And the defense is thinking, we don't want to go back out there.
09:33And the offense is thinking, we can get the yard.
09:35We're gashing them.
09:36We're gashing them.
09:37Kind of.
09:38Why wouldn't you get the yard?
09:399-38, incomplete, 4-5.
09:43That was their...
09:44Gashing.
09:44It was 38-2-2.
09:46And that was the moment where I was like, oh, this guy again.
09:49Because it's fine.
09:49Devontae Adams, he got hot in the second half.
09:52Puka Nakua is maybe the best receiver in football.
09:55He's so awesome.
09:56You get it, right?
09:57And then 2-2, Blinken Atwell again.
10:0038 yards.
10:01And that's what I was thinking.
10:02Okay.
10:03If 2-2 is going to do this again, you're going to lose.
10:06And then you have the big stop on fourth and one.
10:08You win.
10:09Awesome.
10:09Just incredible.
10:10Yep.
10:11So that's what stands out in my mind.
10:13That's what I'm going to take to bed again tonight.
10:16And the night after that.
10:17How exciting is it, by the way?
10:19This is so funny.
10:20I'm so exhausted.
10:21I'm, like, thrilled the Niners don't play Sunday.
10:24Right.
10:25Isn't it great?
10:26Like, even as a fan, think about how these players feel.
10:29They can't walk.
10:30They're all hurt.
10:31People are breaking hands.
10:33And so they get a week and a half off.
10:36Good for them.
10:37I even feel, I'm like, whew, this is going to be nice to sit down on a Sunday
10:40and just do stress-free Red Zone for the day.
