00:00Here's what Shani said about sort of the Niners' offense versus the Seattle defense.
00:06I mean, it's what we expected.
00:08I mean, just with their defense, we expected to do better than we did.
00:11But we knew it was a good defense.
00:12We knew that in week one.
00:13We knew it from watching tape all week.
00:15We knew it would be a challenge.
00:16And they got us in a number of moments.
00:18Had a couple opportunities, I thought, that we missed.
00:21And you can't miss those versus a team like that.
00:22And here's what he said there.
00:24A little more on that about the run game.
00:26I mean, I think when you have, you know, having 40 plays, couldn't get the run game going.
00:30I think we only had 12 runs.
00:32I think we converted one third down in the first half.
00:35That was a series, I think, the only series that we got the score on.
00:38But you convert two third downs in a game.
00:41They control the clock for 40 minutes versus a good team.
00:44It's kind of the opposite of what happened last game.
00:45You know, I thought we did better on our third downs.
00:47We played them in week one.
00:48We had the ball for 40 minutes.
00:49We averaged about three yards of carry in that game.
00:51But we stayed on the field, so we were able to get 36 runs.
00:54Today, the run average was similar, but we only got 12 of them.
00:57And they controlled the ball, kept it from us.
01:00And when we had to get something going, we had to stay on the field on third.
01:03Okay, so that was what he said about offense.
01:05And then here's kind of what he said about defense.
01:07I mean, we need to tackle better.
01:08We need to play better than that.
01:09I was proud that they kept battling and was able to hold them to 13 points.
01:13That's what gave us a chance there at the end.
01:15But we need to play better all around.
01:17Okay, so, like, I heard a lot of this, you know, I mean, like, on the crossover, Stein,
01:23he was like, come on, Kyle.
01:25Does it sound to you like he's blaming the defense for this football game?
01:28No.
01:29What he's saying is that in order to win, they have to play complimentary football.
01:33They have to possess it for more minutes than the other team.
01:36They have to run it 30 times.
01:38They have to give themselves a chance.
01:39The offense gave the defense no chance to really assert themselves.
01:44The defense did enough to give the offense the chance.
01:47But you look at them on third down, they converted two.
01:50They were two for nine.
01:51And even through that, Mark, the Niners, do you know where they ranked this year
01:54in third down conversion percentage in the NFL?
01:58Prior to this game, you're talking about?
02:00No, even after this game.
02:01Very high.
02:02Number one.
02:03Number one, yeah.
02:04Numero uno.
02:05But guess what Seattle ranks in stopping third down?
02:08Probably number one or number two.
02:10Number one.
02:10There you go.
02:11Yeah, this was the power versus power matchup, and Seattle won it.
02:15Right.
02:15The Niners on the year are just a click below 50% on third down.
02:21That's crazy.
02:22And so you go two for nine, and you run it 12 times,
02:25and your defense holds them to 13.
02:27Noble, valiant, but you're going to lose those games.
02:30And I did the whole numbers on, and we've talked a lot about it,
02:33when they run it 30 times, what's their record, blah, blah, blah.
02:36It's the same thing when they win time of possession.
02:38When they win the time of possession, when they run it 30 times,
02:42under Shanahan, they're almost unbeatable.
02:44Quick story, and then we're going to go back to the phones,
02:47because one thing I've learned in doing this job is that coaches often know
02:52before the game if they've got the better horses or the worse horses.
02:58They know.
02:59Mm-hmm.
02:59Mm-hmm, horse.
03:01They know, and they will call the game as such, which is like, okay,
03:07this is a bad spot for us, so we're going to need to kind of,
03:11we're going to need to be a little quirky here.
03:13We're going to need to maybe get a break over here.
03:15And that's what he means by, like, we're going to need to convert our third downs,
03:19because he's like, we're going to end up in a lot of third downs.
03:21So years and years ago, and now because he's no longer with us,
03:25I can go ahead and let the cat out of the bag about who it is.
03:27I might have told you this story before, but I was working for a network,
03:31and we had a weekly, same way you and I do with Steve Kerr.
03:34Oh, yeah.
03:34We had a weekly with Dennis Green, okay?
03:38Denny Green, just a great coach and a great personality.
03:42You've told the story before, but I love it.
03:44Tell it again.
03:45Okay.
03:45So Denny Green and my producer on the phone,
03:48they're trying to figure out what day is a good day each week to do the interview.
03:54And the producer is thinking, like, unless for when you play on Monday night,
04:00let's do Mondays, because it's right after the game,
04:05and we can break it down with you, coach.
04:07And Denny's like, nope, we're not doing Mondays.
04:10We're not doing Mondays.
04:11His name was Craig.
04:12We're not doing Mondays, Craig, because you know what?
04:15I'm going to be in a bad mood on Mondays,
04:17because we are going to lose a lot of football games this year.
04:19We are going to lose most of our football games this year.
04:22So I do not want to do Mondays.
04:23You've got to give me some time to get my mood back,
04:26and maybe we can do, like, Wednesday or Thursday.
04:29We cannot do Monday.
04:30And it stuck with me, because I'm like, you're the coach of the team,
04:34and I think our perception is the coach walks in,
04:36and it's win-win-win for the Gipper,
04:37and we're going to gather all our guys, and we're going to do this,
04:40and we're going to fight, and we're going to win,
04:41and I'm going to scheme it up.
04:42Is this when he was in Arizona?
04:43Yes.
04:44Okay.
04:44Like, all of you scheme it up, people.
04:48Like, you can't just snap your fingers and scheme it up
04:52and make a team go out there and win if they're not the better team.
04:57And I felt like in listening to Kyle, and by the way, some of the players too,
05:01Kittle was another one.
05:02When I listened to them talk,
05:04they knew that they were at a deficit in this football game.
05:07They knew that.
05:09So they were going to need some breaks,
05:11and then when the breaks came, they needed to make good on those breaks.
05:14And they didn't do that.
05:15They didn't do that.
05:17And I think we can all agree, in some ways, you can be like,
05:20it's kind of crazy that they only lost by 10.
05:23Right?
05:23We all feel like they could have, should have, would have lost by even more than that.
05:27Yes, but that's where it's so tantalizing,
05:29is because even though they could have, would have, should have,
05:32you still had a fumble that Yatour Gross Matos could have recovered
05:36at the plus 25-yard line.
05:37You had a catch at the five, which at least would have been, you know,
05:42closer to a goal-to-go situation for CMC.
05:45He bobbled it.
05:46They got the pick.
05:47And a third and 17 that they converted.
05:49And through all that, you lost by 10.
05:51So if I look at the micro of the game,
05:54I think, boy, they had chances to win it, and they couldn't get it done.
05:58But the macro is, they've had so many of these games,
06:01and this year, those games have gone their way.
06:04Last year, they went the other way.
06:06And I don't know if you saw Ronnie Bell yesterday with a highlight-worthy,
06:10one-handed catch in the end zone.
06:12My God.
06:13I learned so much watching football yesterday.
06:15Who didn't know that Ronnie Bell was still in the league?
06:19Raise your hand.
06:20You know who I learned it from?
06:22Who?
06:22It's Uncle Scott.
06:23From Sundays.
06:25From Sundays.
06:25I was watching the red zone.
06:26I'm like, Ronnie Bell?
06:28I missed a lot.
06:28I mean, I was in and out, whatever.
06:30You know, you're picking and you're popping.
06:31I got a three-year-old, whatever, playing Candyland.
06:33It's week 18.
06:34We're not locked in.
06:34So I get to the end, and I always catch the touchdown montage,
06:37and we're getting right before that, and it's the top plays of the week.
06:40Ronnie Bell with a one.
06:42Wait.
06:43I can do you one better.
06:44You know what other receiver the Saints have?
06:47Oh, gosh.
06:48Former Niner?
06:49A former Niner.
06:50Dante Pettis.
06:51Dante Pettis.
06:51And he was playing yesterday.
06:53See, that one I knew, though.
06:55I knew Ronnie.
06:56I did not know Dante.
06:57See, I was the opposite.
06:58I knew Dante Pettis was on the Saints, and I knew he was still in the league.
07:01Ronnie Bell, I thought for sure, was like Ronnie from State Farm.
07:05Like I thought he had moved on to insurance, for sure.
07:09Wow.
07:09But they're both there.
07:11So, anyway.
07:12Ronnie Bell, two catches this year.
07:14Well, that was one of them.
07:15One touchdown.
07:17How many drops?
07:19Well, he only had four targets.
07:22So, I'm going to assume two drops.
07:23All right.
07:23You're listening.
07:24Which is mean, Spirits.
07:25He probably threw it over his head.
07:26Dante Pettis, nine catches.
07:28So, there you go.
07:29Okay.
07:29You're listening to 95.7 The Game.
07:32KGMZ FM and HD1 San Francisco and Odyssey Sports Station.
07:35The home of the Golden State Warriors and Valkyries.
07:36Always live on the free Odyssey app.
07:38Coming to you live from the Laughing Monk Studios.
07:40Hi, Rudy in Riverside.
07:42Thank you for calling.
07:43What's going on?
07:45What's up, fellas?
07:46I appreciate you guys.
07:48No, I'm going to give you some insight.
07:50I'm a Ram fan.
07:51Okay.
07:53And I've called you guys before and on the other show, too.
07:56And since day one, I would call Brock Purdy fool's gold.
08:01Because he looks so good versus average teams without a pass rush.
08:07It's not his fault that the Rat Niners are always injured.
08:10I'll say that.
08:12He looks so good against those teams.
08:14And in Kyle Shanahan's schemes, he's really, like, perfect for that offense.
08:20When you get a defense that's hard hitting and pounds them because he's a little guy, he has problems.
08:27Now, Mac Jones did all the heavy lifting this year.
08:30Six games.
08:31Brock Purdy sat out with an injury.
08:33Right?
08:34Eight.
08:34Actually, actually, Rudy was eight.
08:37It was eight.
08:39Who was the really good team that Mac beat?
08:43The Rams.
08:44Well, he beat the Rams.
08:45Yep.
08:46And the sock to the jaw goal line fumble.
08:48Then the block kick.
08:50And we ended up getting rid of our kicker.
08:52Right.
08:52I'm just saying he was able to be fresh-legged, sit out those games, feel spry doing the dougie against his cupcake teams, finally playing a good defense, get pounded, and he didn't look the same.
09:05And tell me if I'm wrong.
09:07Whenever he plays a good defense and it's mano a mano, the teams are evenly level, he doesn't look the same.
09:18And it's not his fault.
09:19He used to be a seventh-round pick.
09:21I think he's one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL.
09:24I'll give him that.
09:25But he was able to be fresh-legged for these games and finally played a good defense.
09:31And it's not his fault that the Iyuk fiasco and stuff and CMC couldn't do the same thing.
09:37But I really think it's going to be the Seahawks or the Rams holding up the Lombardia-Levi this year.
09:43And we'll see what happens.
09:45But I appreciate you guys.
09:47But that was just my take on Brock Purdy.
09:48I think Mack Jones would have scored more points on Saturday than three points.
09:55Yeah.
09:55Okay.
09:55Thanks, Rudy.
09:56I mean, I wonder if the Seattle Seahawks are a good defense.
10:01Can we all agree that they're a good defense?
10:02We sure can.
10:03Does he get credit for beating them in week one?
10:06No.
10:07No, that's not the way.
10:08That's not the way.
10:09But they're a good defense.
10:09That's not the way draftism works.
10:11But, but, but, but.
10:12No.
10:13But, but, but.
10:13No, no, no, no.
10:14No, you're not allowed to do that.
10:16But Brock Purdy.
10:17No.
10:17If.
10:17No, this is sports radio.
10:19But if you dock him for losing to them on Saturday.
10:22I'm sorry.
10:22You also have to give him equal credit.
10:24No, Dan.
10:25You are not allowed to compliment people on sports.
10:28Drop the Dan.
10:29Dan.
10:30Okay.
10:31Stop complimenting people on sports radio.
10:35Is Cleveland a good defense?
10:37Not when Brock plays them.
10:39Well, I mean, they, he.
10:40They're very good, but not that, no.
10:42Not that week they weren't.
10:43I mean, week 13, 13th game in a row, they beat Cleveland.
10:47And I'm with you on, like, okay, he beat Chicago.
10:50He outgunned Chicago.
10:52Great.
10:52He put up five touchdowns against Indy.
10:54By the way, when did Chicago become an awful defense?
10:58They're fine.
10:59They're not great, but, like, they're 11-6.
11:03Detroit is this great offense.
11:04They scored, they didn't even get to 20 yesterday.
11:07So, Indianapolis' defense, when you played them, they were down both their corners.
11:11Yes, Indy's, Indy's, Indy's, Indy's, Indy's lost, what did they lose, like seven in a row?
11:15Something like that.
11:15To finish the season.
11:16They were, they were, they were hampered.
11:18Here's, okay, here's actually the comp that I wanted to make.
11:21I don't want to, Rudy, look, it's a fair take.
11:24It's a great take, Rudy.
11:25No, it's not a great take.
11:26It's a fair take.
11:27It's a great take.
11:28Rack that guy.
11:28You're allowed to have it.
11:30I disagree.
11:31I think you disagree, too, Dan.
11:33That's about enough of that, okay?
11:35No, it's on my brain.
11:37There was a really good, I hope he's listening.
11:39There's a really, really nice guy named Dan who came up and said, hi, you want me to pass along hi to you as well?
11:46Okay.
11:46Listen to the show, Costco parking lot.
11:48Appreciate it.
11:49Yesterday morning, it was my second attempt to get it.
11:50Oh, you finally got there.
11:51I got there yesterday morning.
11:52These floods this weekend were absolutely bananas.
11:55So, anyway.
11:56And all you Happy New Year people, you've got until Friday, so let's go ahead and get them out early.
12:00Did you know that Larry David said that it expired yesterday?
12:03Yes, yeah.
12:04He's even more Dibbly than Dibbly.
12:05I have a different take.
12:06I'm going to give you, like, the first day back, which is today.
12:09Yeah, Happy New Year.
12:10You get the week.
12:11Okay.
12:11I'm going to give you until Friday.
12:12And beyond that...
12:13What if I text you on Saturday?
12:15That's still this week.
12:15You're going to.
12:16And it's funny because Pasta, a.k.a. Rice, who's in for Lucas today, he has an alarm on his phone reminding himself to wish me a Happy New Year on the 8th.
12:27That's the kind of person we're dealing with here.
12:29But the 8th is still within your frame.
12:31Yeah, then I'll even give you the 9th on Friday.
12:34Okay.
12:34I'm in a generous mood this year.
12:36What if I try the 12th?
12:38Then you're on my list.
12:39Okay.
12:40Ernie Chavez actually...
12:41What happens if I'm on your list?
12:43What do the list people get?
12:44I mean, you don't want to know.
12:46You don't want to know.
12:47I don't want to know.
12:48You know I'm a grudge holder, so don't make me hold a grudge.
12:51Anyway.
12:52Anyhow.
12:53This is what I want to throw at you.
12:54Happy New Year.
12:55Do you want to know?
12:56I'm going to give you the name of a quarterback.
12:58And you tell me if he's a good quarterback.
13:02Okay.
13:03This quarterback, on November 20th, boy, I think he got sacked 8 times.
13:12His team did not get to 20 points.
13:15He turned the ball over.
13:18Let me look it up.
13:20He turned the ball over twice.
13:22Okay.
13:23He threw two interceptions.
13:25He did not throw a touchdown.
13:27He was sacked 8 times.
13:29His team did not score 20.
13:31It was against a really good defense.
13:32It was against Houston.
13:33Same quarterback, just a couple of weeks ago, went against another good defense called the
13:40Philadelphia Eagles.
13:42Oh, wow.
13:42Okay.
13:43I've heard of them.
13:43He, again, did not throw a touchdown.
13:48He did not throw any picks, but he fumbled twice.
13:50And he only scored 12 points in that football game.
13:57You know who that is?
13:59I do, just because I remember the 8-sack game.
14:01Yeah, go ahead.
14:02He stinks.
14:03Yeah.
14:03Tell everybody his name.
14:05It's Josh Allen.
14:08It's Josh Allen.
14:10Josh Allen.
14:10So, when you say, like, oh, when Brock goes against a good defense, he's not as good,
14:16like, my thought is, right, that applies to everybody.
14:19That applies to everybody.
14:22And that doesn't, like, remove Brock from the conversation, or any quarterback.
14:27It doesn't remove Josh Allen from the conversation.
14:30But when you have a great defense that overwhelms an offensive line, it is going to make anybody
14:35who is a, quote-unquote, skilled position player suddenly look ordinary.
14:41It messes up an offense.
14:43Something awful.
14:44So, do I think that Brock Purdy gets worse against good defenses?
14:48It's kind of a weird question.
14:50Right.
14:50Yes, because all do.
14:53Do your socks get wet on rainy days?
14:57Depends on my shoes.
14:58But, yeah.
14:59Yeah.
15:00Right.
15:01And then, but similarly, you know, like, is their output worse?
15:06Yes.
15:07But I'm also not going to buy that we've never seen Brock Purdy play well against good defenses.
15:13This is somebody who's racked up playoff wins, multiple playoff wins, twice in a young career.
15:20Those, by definition, those are good teams.
15:23Those are good defenses.
15:25Right.
15:25Playoff teams.
15:26The Packers, two years ago, had a good defense and a lead in the fourth quarter.
15:30And Brock Purdy, in rain, drove through the rain and won the football game.
15:35And nobody wants to ever acknowledge that it happened.
15:39So, like...
15:39It's all circumstantial.
15:40Of course it is.
15:41The Niners have a quarterback this year who faced that same Houston defense and threw for a buck 93, had a pick,
15:49and McCaffrey had eight carries for 25 yards on the ground.
15:52They're awesome.
15:53They're an awesome defense.
15:54So, that was Mac Jones.
15:55Right.
15:56And we all want to play the hot hand.
15:58Well, when you play awesome defenses, like Seattle, like Houston, you're going to have a hard time no matter who you are.
16:04Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen.
16:07No matter who you are, good defenses are going to overwhelm mediocre offensive lines.
16:12And that's what the Niners basically have.
16:14Totally.
16:14Especially if Trent's not in the football game.
16:16So, Kyle is not free from criticism in this game.
16:20If you want to make it about Brock Purdy, I didn't really see anything that stood out good or bad about Brock Purdy.
16:25It was kind of just like a whatever type of a performance.
16:29He did not have the time to have the offense function the way it did.
16:33But I thought, if we could just rewind the clock like 48 hours, I thought that we had collectively as a society arrived at the spot of, like, can we stop the Brock thing?
16:47Like, can we stop?
16:48Brock is a really good quarterback, and he's totally worth the money.
16:52And no, they're not going to score 40 points every week.
16:56Like, that's where I sit.
16:57Like, just go, you know, the last handful of weeks, Brock was just brilliant.
17:04Absolutely brilliant.
17:06And I don't like, you don't get to do the whole, like, but those were bad teams.
17:10Who do you think Matt Stafford cuts up?
17:14Now, you could bring up the Seattle game with Stafford two weeks ago.
17:20Yep.
17:21Unbelievable performance.
17:22However, his offensive line created time.
17:28Right.
17:28It created time.
17:29The 49ers' offensive line did not.
17:30The Niners scored 37, 48, 42, and then three.
17:34Right.
17:34If you want to go ahead and average that out, that's still a pretty high-powered, potent offense.
17:39And that's still a pretty high- Farm thing.
17:41What is the halfway-state against the defense station?
17:48And what does that do, that's still a pretty high-raham- Wildlife thing?
17:50Which one is associated with the thief's insurance.
17:52And I think I wanted to teach maybe the thief's insurance.
17:57Right.
17:57Well, then I want to go ahead andず, to give him back a little bit of an owner- folds view and
17:59that's still opinion.
18:00And I don't have to go off the horse, but it's people take aha, so as I want to just
18:02you, I want to keep theọ in 99,000.
18:03And therefore, I want to take a pretty Rough thing to a little bit of a cold thing to
18:05a little boy.
18:06All I know works.
18:07After driving,魚 has to go, and I can have to save it
18:08and we didn't have to spend all yet.
