00:00Very important for you to hear on a Victory Monday and an Injury Monday,
00:05the words of Kyle Shanahan on his conference call.
00:07Here it is.
00:08All right, guys.
00:09Injuries from the game.
00:10C.J. West, he'll have surgery tomorrow.
00:12We'll update later in the week on him.
00:15Mack Jones with his knee.
00:17He'll be day-to-day.
00:18Mikael Williams with his wrist.
00:20He'll be day-to-day.
00:21Renardo Green with his neck.
00:22Day-to-day.
00:24I know you guys heard, but Nick Bosa, ACL out for the year.
00:28Go ahead, guys.
00:29Kyle, what was the injury to C.J. West in his thumb?
00:32How did he hurt that?
00:33I don't know exactly how he did it, but he broke his thumb.
00:36That's why he's needing surgery.
00:38He'll have a chance, they say.
00:40We'll see how it goes this week.
00:41But he'll have a chance at the end of the week with a cast.
00:43If not, he should be good the following week.
00:45But we've got to see how this week goes with him.
00:47Coach, just interested to know, have you talked to Nick Bosa since he got the news?
00:51How's he doing?
00:52And also, YouTube, Gross Motos, any update on how soon or how long it'll be
00:58before he returns back to the field?
01:00I got to talk to Nick last night.
01:03You know, it wasn't confirmed until this morning.
01:05I haven't been able to see him yet today, but talked to him last night.
01:08He had a pretty good idea what we were going to find out today.
01:10But obviously, he's bummed down, but Nick can handle anything, and he's going to handle it
01:17like he always does, which will be great.
01:20But obviously, he was bummed out from not being able to finish out this year,
01:23and especially how good of a year he was having so far.
01:26And then he's been out there the last three weeks.
01:29So hopefully, as he keeps going and doesn't have any setbacks,
01:32hopefully he can continue to progress with that and handle more reps.
01:37So we've got to see how that goes.
01:39Kyle, what goes into picking up the pieces and moving on after something like this with Bosa?
01:45I mean, nothing in particular.
01:47You don't just replace a guy like Nick.
01:49I mean, it just puts, you know, everyone's got to continue to get better at everything.
01:53Just like, same thing I'd be preaching if we did have Nick, too.
01:58You know, when you lose your better players, it gets harder.
02:01But I also expect throughout this year, I expect all of our players to get better as it goes.
02:05And let's see stress even that much more when you lose a grade one like Nick.
02:10Lots of guys, obviously, will have to step it up as it goes.
02:12But I believe that will be more by committee than any individual.
02:16Will you be looking at trade options?
02:18We'll look at trade like we always do.
02:22But there's got to be trade options that make sense for you and another team.
02:27But you can't just do that stuff just to do it.
02:29Kyle, did Nick explain to you how the injury happened, whether the knee actually was impacted?
02:37You know, I looked like he was double teamed, but like the leg just splayed out wide.
02:43No, he didn't explain it to me.
02:45You know, it's just how those things happen a lot, especially with ACLs.
02:48They happen on air the majority of the time.
02:50And I know it was his right leg, and he just got it caught right there and went right away.
02:55And a guy who's done it two times before, you know, he was pretty confident that he did it.
03:00You could tell walking on the field, seeing his face, and you could tell talking to him last night,
03:04just how sure he was of it and knowing his body.
03:06And then an MRI confirmed it this morning.
03:10Is there anything for Brock this week?
03:16Expect him to get back in practice this week.
03:18So hopefully we'll see how it is on Wednesday.
03:21I don't know whether I'll have limitations or not.
03:22But I expect him to get back out there and get some stuff in,
03:26and we'll see on Wednesday how much he's able to do.
03:29Was there anything else with Bosa's knee, like meniscus, NCL, and any other additional factors?
03:38I was told it's as clean as it gets.
03:41So in terms of if you have an ACL, I was told that it's the kind that you want.
03:46Like you said, Kyle, you can't replace Nick Bosa,
03:48but does it give you some hope with the progress that Mikel Williams has been making
03:52and the rest of the young defensive linemen?
03:56Yeah, I mean, I thought that was crucial with Nick.
03:58So, like, I mean, we need guys to step it up, to play along with Nick.
04:01And now that he's not out, I mean, you need him that much more.
04:04I mean, now that he is out, you need him that much more.
04:06But I've definitely been happy with those guys.
04:08I think they've done better each week.
04:09I thought Mikel had a really good game yesterday.
04:11I think Huff's done some real good things.
04:13Sam O, all our edge players, I think, have been contributing.
04:16And hopefully they continue to get better throughout this year.
04:20Kyle, what did you see from the young offensive linemen?
04:23Your guards seem to have a little bit of a struggle a little bit,
04:27especially with Dominic Puglia on the safety.
04:30Yeah, you know, I thought there was definitely a number of plays in the game
04:34that we needed to hold up longer.
04:35You know, the backed up one especially, you know, happened too fast.
04:39And number one wasn't open.
04:41And when that happens that fast, that is an issue.
04:45There was times that we did protect well in the game.
04:47But it definitely came up a few too many times, especially in some tough spots.
04:51And they had some challenges there on the inside.
04:54But ones that I think we can do better with.
04:56Kyle, I saw that Upton Stout was able to address the locker room after the game.
05:00How impressed have you been through just three weeks of his rookie season?
05:04Real impressed.
05:05Been impressed with the guy since really he's gotten here.
05:07And just that play that he made to give the offense a chance to get that ball back
05:11for that final drive was just huge.
05:13And it was so similar to so many things that have happened in practice
05:16to where he was beat a little bit on the play where the guy had a couple yards on him.
05:20But I can't tell you how many times this happened in practice
05:22where I think we haven't beat.
05:24And I think we for sure have a completion.
05:26And I'm kind of moving on to the next play.
05:28And then at the end of the play, I see the balls on the ground.
05:31It's just kind of how he's been since he's gone here.
05:33The guy never stops.
05:34He's always going so hard, never hesitates, never flinches,
05:38and doesn't stop until the whistle blows.
05:41And I think that was a perfect example of something that really doesn't surprise us
05:44because of how many times we've seen it in practice.
05:46How do you feel Connor Colby did in his first career start?
05:49I thought the fact that Connor was able to battle and do some of the stuff that he did,
05:53especially with the injury that he had on Thursday,
05:56just had a ton of respect for him getting through that game.
05:59It wasn't perfect.
06:00There was definitely protection.
06:02There was a few that he missed.
06:04But overall, I thought he played good enough for us to win
06:06and just earned a lot of respect with the guys,
06:08actually just being able to play with what happened to him earlier in the week.
06:12But with Demarcus Robinson coming off the suspension list,
06:15what's your plan for him this week?
06:16And also, how is Juwan Jennings?
06:21Demarcus, I'm pumped to get him back.
06:22I know it's a long three weeks for him,
06:23so we're real excited to have him back working with us.
06:26We'll kind of see where he's at when we get out on the practice field Wednesday,
06:28physically at least.
06:29And then J.J., same boat as last week, we'll evaluate him as this week goes.
06:37And so I guess we'd call that day-to-day with J.J.
06:40This is only like a few times since you've been here that you've had the ball
06:46for that little amount of time and won a game.
06:50What are the problems that go into being play calling and rhythm when you don't have the ball?
06:55That's tough.
06:56I mean, we were struggling to run the ball, what it felt like,
07:00but then you realize, man, you've only had four runs.
07:02You're struggling to get plays going, but then you realize halfway through the second quarter,
07:07you've only had six plays.
07:08So it is tough.
07:10It was an unusual time.
07:12I mean, there was one time where I thought they held on the ball for like 20 minutes,
07:15but they'd only gone 20 yards.
07:17So it was just kind of unusual how it all panned out.
07:21But when you do that, when that's the case, you know, it becomes such a big deal on third down.
07:26And then for them to be controlling the ball that well and then for us to go 2 of 10 on third down
07:30is not a very good recipe.
07:33You're not going to have the ball that much.
07:35I thought we recovered in the second half and balanced it out a lot more.
07:38But usually when it's like that, it's going to come down to the wire.
07:41And that's why I was so proud of our guys because for us to have the ball at 13-13
07:45with five and a half minutes left, I feel like we kind of just kind of created the momentum
07:50where we went down there and scored the first touchdown in the fourth.
07:53And then they went in and answered with their first touchdown in the fourth.
07:57But 13-13, we're driving, five and a half minutes left,
08:00and we get our first turnover with that interception.
08:03And then the next time we're up, we basically get a turnover because we have a safety.
08:06But any time you have two turnovers like that in a tight game with under five and a half minutes,
08:11it is extremely rare to find a way to win.
08:15Usually that has to do with something kind of out of the ordinary,
08:18like a blocked kick, return for a touchdown, or something like that.
08:21And for nothing really unusual to happen, just normal football and executing stuff,
08:26our defense getting it back, and then that play on third down
08:28and the offense to just be able to go down there and kick it on a final play with a field goal,
08:32I just thought it just showed our guys down.
08:34The waiver kept going and found a way to get it on the last play of the game.
08:38It was good?
08:39All right, guys.
08:40See you guys Wednesday.
08:41All right.
08:41You good?
08:42Yeah.
08:42Okay.
08:43I'm good.
08:43Yeah.
08:43Okay, good.
08:44Good.
08:44So am I.
08:45You're listening to 95.7 The Game, KGMZ FM,

08:51and the home of the Golden State Warriors and Valkyries.
08:54Always live on the free Odyssey app.
08:55Coming to you live from the Laughing Monk Studios.
08:5949ers are winning in just a multitude of ways.
09:01It's like you look at the Seattle game, and you remember it was like Christian McCaffrey
09:06touched the ball 31 times, and everyone was all freaked out about it,
09:10but everyone was like, yeah, but hang tight.
09:12It's because they had the ball for like 40 of the 60 minutes,
09:16and then you had kind of a middle ground thing in a game that you led most of the way
09:20against New Orleans, and in this one, all of a sudden, it kind of flips.
09:24Like you seemingly never have the ball.
09:28And if there's one thing that if I'm the Niners right now, I'm concerned about,
09:34the reason that they're scoring so few points, less than 20 per game,
09:40is not because of their inability to throw the ball downfield,
09:44even with a backup quarterback.
09:45It's not because they don't have the weapons right now.
09:48I know that they don't, but they still have enough.
09:51If the issue is chain moving, the issue is chain moving,
09:55and the fact of the matter is, whether this is Christian,
09:59whether it's a little bit of B-Rob, whether it's the offensive line,
10:02I don't know whether it's the defenses just stacking the box.
10:06The 49ers right now are not able to consistently move the chains
10:12with their run game.
10:14They're not getting enough on the ground.
10:16And this is so bread and butter for Kyle Shanahan
10:19that that's what's going to need to be better down the road of the season
10:23if they want to actually become a somewhat prolific offense.
10:28They're throwing the ball almost twice as much as they're running it
10:30because they're having more success throwing it than they are running it.
10:35It's just very eyebrow-raising.
10:36It's not normal for Kyle Shanahan.
10:37It's totally different.
10:38And I've done the numbers on all the Shanahan era,
10:41and when they don't run it 30 or more times, they usually don't win.
10:46They win actually at a 32% clip when they don't get 30 carries.
10:51This year they're 2-0 when they don't have 30 or more carries.
10:55And also, when they don't win the time of possession battle,
10:59they usually don't win, but they won yesterday.
11:02They're 1-0 this year when they don't win the time of possession battle.
11:05And I was listening to Grandy and Sterling yesterday on overtime a lot
11:09as I was running around getting takeout,
11:11and he actually made a great point about targets.
11:15And so I was thinking about touches,
11:17and McCaffrey and Ricky Pearsall accounted for 35 of the 47 touches,
11:23carries and catches.
11:25Those two guys, 35 of 47.
11:29And 26 of the 41 targets.
11:32Right.
11:32And so to your point, though, about running the ball,
11:35McCaffrey was 17 carries for 52, and you mentioned B-Rob.
11:39He only had two carries.
11:41One of them was great.
11:42One of them was for 19 yards.
11:43Exactly.
11:44And the other one was just a garden variety three.
11:46And so it's not so much that McCaffrey's not able to run it.
11:51They're not able to run it.
11:52And again, 3.1 per carry for McCaffrey yesterday.
11:56And if you take B-Rob's in there, 3.7,
12:00one of those was an explosive run.
12:01And they're not getting explosive runs.
12:05And thank goodness for the Brock and Mack to Pearsall connection
12:09because that's basically the offense.
12:12It's McCaffrey out of the backfield or on the line of scrimmage.
12:15And it's Pearsall.
12:17And that's it.
12:18End of offense.
12:18I don't think it's ideal, but I also understand it.
12:21I mean, look what we're looking at right here.
12:24Two of the three games, you're throwing a backup quarterback in there.
12:27Now, okay, who's he going to throw to?
12:28Well, I'm sorry, George Kittle's not there.
12:31All right.
12:31Well, I'm sorry, Juwan Jennings is not there.
12:34Okay, who's that guy over there?
12:35Well, it might be Marquez Valdez-Scantling.
12:37It might be Sky Moore.
12:39It's some ex-chief.
12:40I'm not sure.
12:41Valdez-Scantling, right?
12:42I don't know who that is, but he's wearing a jersey.
12:46Maybe throw to him.
12:47Kendrick Bourne.
12:48I do remember that guy, not from the Niner days, but I used to throw to him in New England.
12:53And then there's Ricky and Christian.
12:56And these are, I know Ricky didn't do a whole lot prior to this year, but this is somebody
13:02who was a first-round draft pick a year and a half ago.
13:05He was a big piece of the offense at the end of the year last year.
13:08And I know he missed some of OTAs in the early part of camp, but he was there in August really
13:15working with the people and there the whole time, unlike Juwan.
13:19It's not surprising.
13:20That's who Mack is comfortable with.
13:23And I think this is a big piece of the offense is that the comfort food is coming back.
13:29Demarcus Robinson had a full camp.
13:31That's a little bit of comfort food.
13:33George Kittle been here for the better part of a decade.
13:36That's really comfortable.
13:37There's a security blanket there.
13:39And at a certain point, then you're going to start to sprinkle back in Juwan and Brandon
13:45Iyuk, et cetera, et cetera.
13:47And I do think at that point, the ball gets spread around a little bit more.
13:50Plus, you get your quarterback back.
13:52So, yeah, it's not ideal, but I get it.
13:54You understand why it ended up this way.
13:57It's a ragtag group.
13:59It is.
14:00It's ragtag, but you would also hope that you'd be able to run the ball.
14:04Of course.
14:05I agree.
14:05The ragtag part of it, you're right.
14:07No Demarcus Robinson, Juwan missed a game, no Kittle.
14:10I get all that.
14:11And, you know, Valdez Scantling is new, and Kendrick Bourne is fresh back, and Sky Moore,
14:16you'd rather not play on offense, but he was getting snaps and all the rest of it.
14:20Kyle, you've checked the only touchdown on the game.
14:24You don't have a rushing touchdown on the year.
14:27And three games in, that's really, really odd, and yet you're 3-0.
14:31So, we can look at all these things that are shortcomings and, you know, failings, and it's all there, but you are 3-0.
14:39So, the real challenge to me is, how do you figure out a way to run the football?
14:43Because right now, you just can't, and you're not getting consistent running from anybody, even Christian McCaffrey.
14:50So, by and large, you have to throw him the ball to get him involved in the offense and be really successful.
14:56And that, to me, becomes the big, overarching, non-sustainable part of what we've seen so far.
15:02Yeah, Bosa's going to be gone.
15:04That's going to hurt you defensively, but offensively, you mentioned moving the chains.
15:10Yesterday, it was 3-0, 3-0.
15:13You moved down, you kicked a field goal, and then you kicked another field goal.
15:17Four possessions, six points, two punts.
15:20That's not good enough.
15:21No, no.
15:21888-957.
15:23957 is the number.
15:24We'll do three things.
15:25Our top observations from yesterday coming up at 4-15.
15:29We've also got a pick for Dibbs to get in.
15:31He is 11-2, but we're asking you, in the wake of the Nick Bosa injury, he is out for the year.
15:38What is sort of winning within your emotions today?
15:42The high of the Niners being 3-0, or the low of Nick Bosa being out?
15:47Let's go to Javier in Vacaville.
15:48Hey, Javier, thanks for the call.
15:49What's up?
15:52How are you doing today, Mr. Willard, Mr. Diddley?
15:54What's up?
15:55Good here.
15:56How are you guys doing today?
15:57Good.
15:57Oh, I didn't do that.
16:01Did y'all do that?
16:02Did he do that?
16:03It was not us.
16:05It was crazy.
16:06Something happened.
16:08Whoop.
16:09Boom.
16:09Boom.
16:10Yeah.
16:10He's going to call back.
16:11He's calling back already.
16:12He's going to call back.
16:13Get Javier back on the line, because I want to hear what he has to say.
16:18But yeah, we've got, you just heard from Kyle Shanahan a short time ago, and I know the
16:25Nick Bosa situation is a total, total gut punch, but outside of that, some of the other injuries
16:31throughout the day that we were concerned with seem to have come back as kind of a thumbs
16:36up, from Michael Williams to Renardo Green, et cetera, et cetera.
16:40A lot of day-to-days, and so hopefully the week goes well, and the Niners start to get
16:45those reinforcements that I think will change this dynamic we're talking about.
16:48And CJ West is going to have surgery on his broken thumb, but he's not ruled out for Sunday,
16:54and that's all you need to know to hear how they're not like us, and shout out Kendrick
17:00Lamar, so he's going to have surgery on a broken thumb, and he just might play on Sunday.
17:05Go ahead and cast me up, and let me go out there and just club people with my broken
17:10hand.
17:10It's the most football thing you'll ever hear.
17:12Right.
17:13Yeah, CJ West, it's great.
17:15You should spotlight that part from Kyle.
17:17Yeah, CJ West is hurt, he'll have surgery tomorrow, and he might play this weekend.
17:23Right.
17:23What?
17:24Right.
17:24Like, the word surgery in the real world means, like, I'll see you next month, maybe.
17:29Maybe.
17:30Maybe.
17:30Yeah.
17:31Go ahead.
17:31Yeah, he did a limited amount of stuff in practice yesterday.
17:33I mean, questionable concern around CJ West.
17:37Exactly, questionable.
17:39Yeah.
17:39Questionable concern.
17:40I mean, questionable concern, and you actually need him, and you need all these guys now without
17:44Nick Bosa, and you figure out if you can play Mikel Williams more on the outside and stuff,
17:50and then you're going to figure out if CJ West can play with his broken hand in the interior,
17:55and you've got Kalia Davis, who I think has been really good so far this year, and Sam
18:00Oh, and, you know, the defensive line has really played well, I think, for the most part, over
18:05three games, but now they all have to play even better without Nick Bosa.
18:08Let's go back to Javier and Vacaville for take two.
18:11Hey, Javier, take it away.
18:12How are you doing today, Mr. Dibley, and Mr. Woodley, can you guys hear me?
18:16Yep, we got you.
18:18There you go.
18:19I would say, you know, very impressed for a team that had low expectations for, I thought,
18:24500 team, maybe above 500 team.
18:26Prove me wrong.
18:27Obviously, the Bosa injury is very concerning.
18:29What I'm concerned about is, heaven forbid, knock on wood, I feel like with the touches that
18:34McCaffrey's getting, we're going to have, unfortunately, unless we have a, you know, reshaped figure of who
18:39we give these touches to in the backfield.
18:40But McCaffrey is something that we've seen this over and over again, and Shanahan's tenure
18:45is getting McCaffrey-friendly.
18:46I mean, he's on pace right now.
18:48He's got 25.6 touches a game right now, on pace for 426 over the year, 436 for that matter.
18:54Brian Robinson is a starting NFL running back.
18:56Brandon has 17 carries in three games.
18:58It's abysmal and, quite frankly, just an abomination of using him correctly.
19:02If he got seven more carries yesterday and seven less touches from McCaffrey, he played
19:0610 less snaps, the 49ers are still winning this game.
19:08We need to keep him fresh for all 17 games and the postseason if you want to make any
19:13running.
19:13Brian Robinson can take five, seven, ten carries a game and not three or less throughout the
19:18first, you know, three games or so or whatever it may be because he hasn't had a lot of tips
19:22in the Seattle game.
19:23If we use Brian Robinson the way that he should and has been used in Washington, the way we
19:27had all envisioned him to do, not only McCaffrey will be better, the team will be better,
19:30but he will last longer and there will be longevity because it's not a sprint, we all know, gentlemen,
19:34it's a marathon.
19:35We got 14 left and then the tournament and we need to make sure McCaffrey is not utilized
19:39to where he's coming into a Super Bowl, fumbling in the second drive of the game.
19:43We're not having his best playoff performance because he's tired.
19:46Brian Robinson can tote the rock seven to ten times a game and take seven to ten touches
19:50away from McCaffrey.
19:52He's having three-point play yards of carry.
19:53Whether our guards are good in the interior or not, he's not to be used like this if we
19:57want to have him out for the next four months every week playing at his best ability.
20:01And I wanted to see what you guys thought because Bosa's a huge vote, we can't afford
20:04to lose McCaffrey and any of them other guys, you know, going into the next weeks, going
20:08into the latter part of the season.
20:09Yep, yep, yeah.
20:10Javier, I mean...
20:11Yeah, he's not wrong.
20:12No, no.
20:12Yesterday was a little curious, though.
20:14It was, and again...
20:16The game flow, you know.
20:17I mean, 17 carries in a vacuum I have no problem with.
20:21It's just that they also fed 15 targets his way and he happened to catch 10 of them.
20:25Oh, by the way, he should have caught 12 of them.
20:27Yeah.
20:27Which would have been two more touches and really ruined those averages.
20:31But I'm always conflicted on this.
20:33Like the one statement in there, you give Brian Robinson five of those carries, the Niners
20:38still win this game.
20:39I don't know that.
20:40I don't know that.
20:41I don't know how we can hypothetically throw that out there and say that.
20:45Now, but I also don't know about this idea of just like, hey, if you limit touches now,
20:50well then it's going to be great at the end of the year.
20:53I don't know that either.
20:54But, it's not an unfair point.
20:58It's not an unfair question in terms of if it were to continue to go at this pace, it
21:04certainly feels like you're tempting fate.
21:07I mean, sure.
21:08That's not a sustainable number.
21:11Then again, I understand a coach is like, within the game flow, it's like we're trying
21:14to win the game.
21:15I'll elaborate more on the other side.
21:17A lot of it was that they just had six plays in the first quarter.
21:21That's all they had.
21:22Six plays.
21:22Six offensive plays.
21:24Were they fun?
21:25Not many of them were very fun.
21:27Okay.
