00:00Here's my answer to what Guru threw out there.
00:03Here's what I was going to say to him
00:04before Stiney put the bag on his shoulder and ran out the damn room.
00:08Which is fine.
00:09He did an extra 40 minutes.
00:10I mean, that was gutsy.
00:11He did.
00:12No shade today.
00:14I was going to say to Guru,
00:16because our station's doing pretty well right now, right?
00:20Everybody's right.
00:20We see the numbers.
00:22Thank you all for listening.
00:24Their show's really, really right.
00:26They're doing great.
00:27So if I had said to Guru, like, you guys are here,
00:31and I want to give love to Evan Giddings, too, almost every day.
00:35Yep.
00:35Right?
00:35You guys are here every day.
00:37And an audience gets built based on what you all are doing
00:43and we all are doing every day.
00:46Would you like it, Guru, or Dibs, or Stiney, or any of the Joes?
00:52Would you like it if I said, great, thank you for arriving at today.
00:59I am now going to reserve all of my judgment of you for today.
01:09Today.
01:10Today is going to be your resume.
01:14It's wonderful that you've done all the things to get you here.
01:17Yeah.
01:17It's wonderful that you do, how many weekdays are there per year?
01:21And then there's vacation and blah, blah, blah.
01:23260.
01:23Okay.
01:24So with vacation, what are we?
01:25We're probably in here almost 250 days a year, 240 days a year.
01:29Something like that, yeah.
01:30Okay, you have 240 shows out of the year.
01:32Great.
01:33Great.
01:34I bet all of them were just hunky-dory.
01:37Well, one show would be the best, and one show would be the 260th best.
01:41No doubt, no doubt, but today, that's the show that I'm going to decide defines you.
01:51How would you feel about that?
01:52I would feel like that's the reality of what we do, because right now there are between one
01:59and I don't even know how many people who have never listened to this station before
02:03and never heard our show before, and right now they're doing that very thing.
02:07So you might be Joe in Livermore, you might be Bill in Benicia, you could be Victor in
02:13Vallejo, you could be Nate in Novato, and I could go on and on, but I won't, because
02:17you get the bit.
02:18Out there, there are people who are listening for the first time, and they're deciding within
02:2220 seconds whether or not they like my raspy, high-pitched voice or your quite soothing,
02:29deep, monotone.
02:30In at the time.
02:31Exactly.
02:32Anyway.
02:32So to that point, it's a little bit different, I get where you're going, but in our business,
02:38it's a little bit different, and it's kind of like when you go to a restaurant for the
02:40first time, and it's like, oh my God, four and a half stars on Yelp, this place is awesome.
02:44Well, but when you go there, bad service, undercooked food, overpriced, whatever.
02:50But you're talking about first impressions.
02:52You're not wrong, but you're talking about first impressions.
02:54I guarantee you've been told at times in your career, you know, I wasn't too sold on you
03:00at first, but it grew on me, and now, boy, I'm a big Dibbers fan.
03:05Like, I guarantee you've been told that, right?
03:06I was also told, like, you're not growing on me, why don't you stop talking?
03:11Why don't you leave?
03:12It was a tryout at another station in this market, and the PD halfway through the show
03:17said, why don't you lay out a little bit?
03:19We want to hear from the other guy.
03:20I was like, you brought me in here to, like, you know, be funny, and I'm pretty funny.
03:27No.
03:27You're a funny guy.
03:28James, can you lay out for a second?
03:29No, you just had four hours.
03:32A few years later, he got fired, and I got hired.
03:34So, there you have it.
03:35See?
03:35There you have it.
03:36Scoreboard.
03:36And that's my point.
03:38Your actual resume is built over time.
03:42It's not built just because, okay, Brock gets to a Super Bowl.
03:46He loses in overtime.
03:47Jalen gets to a Super Bowl.
03:50His defense sacks Patrick Mahomes 11 times.
03:53He wins.
03:54And I'm not here to say Jalen Hurts is not a really good player.
03:57He has, in fact, both of his Super Bowls.
03:59The one that he lost, he played phenomenal.
04:02There was a fumble.
04:03I realize that.
04:04But he has played really well in said Super Bowls.
04:07But I'm going to do that?
04:09Like, I'm going to now tell you, I think it's actually a laughable idea that Nick Sirianni is a better coach than Kyle Shanahan.
04:15I don't think there's a team in the NFL, if given the option to have either coach, would pick Nick.
04:20Not even his own team.
04:22I literally think that.
04:23Am I crazy?
04:24Maybe.
04:25I don't know.
04:26But the bottom line is, I think the NFL will tell you that Kyle Shanahan is a more attractive coach than Nick Sirianni.
04:34Nick Sirianni has a ring.
04:36Kyle doesn't.
04:37Okay.
04:38Okay.
04:39That's a big thing.
04:40It's not all things.
04:42So, that's how I would answer that question.
04:46And no, no, I would not take Nick over Kyle.
04:51And no, I would not take Jalen over Brock.
04:54And in fact, Mark Grandy, he's going to say he had a bad start today.
04:59And he didn't.
05:00He didn't.
05:01Because his start actually started about 9 o'clock this morning.
05:05When he put out what I thought was a damn interesting question.
05:08How many, and this is where you're going to want to call.
05:11Okay.
05:12How many quarterbacks in the NFC would you have more confidence in than Brock if they were the Niners starting quarterback Sunday?
05:25Jalen Hurts, Matt Stafford, Jordan Love, Caleb Williams, Bryce Young, Sam Darnold.
05:36In other words, whittle it down to how many of these would you take over Brock if you could?
05:43The answer is one.
05:44Your answer is one.
05:45It's also kind of a nuanced thing because every quarterback, every coach, every system is different.
05:52And so, Jalen Hurts and Philly, what they do with, you know, having the tush push and him being able to run and using their receivers, their tight end.
06:00And Nick Sirianni doesn't call plays on either side of the ball.
06:03So, he's not really a good comp, I think, to Kyle Shanahan.
06:07But if you looked at Matthew Stafford, yeah, I would take him over Brock.
06:11He can throw it better than Brock.
06:13He doesn't move as well as Brock.
06:15He's done more than Brock has.
06:17He's got more experience.
06:18I think he sees the field as well as Brock.
06:20And so, yeah, that's the one.
06:22Jordan Love is interesting, but I don't think that we've yet seen enough of him at the highest level for me to go, yeah, it's Jordan Love.
06:31And, you know, Jalen Hurts, that's the interesting one where he's done more in terms of games won, big games won, etc.
06:38But his success, I think, is more of a byproduct of what they do.
06:42I don't know if he would thrive in this system.
06:45I don't either.
06:46I don't either.
06:47I think Brock Purdy's a better player than Jalen Hurts.
06:49That's what I think.
06:51As far as what I value in quarterbacking, I agree with what you just said.
06:57Jalen Hurts is a very good player.
06:59Jalen moves pretty well.
07:00Brock moves pretty well.
07:02They do a completely different thing.
07:04And I know that, you know, so now we're dipping our toe in the water of the, like, product of the system and fit and all that stuff.
07:12But it's hard to look at this through the lens of what would they do if given the similar surroundings.
07:23You know, Matt Stafford scored 37 against the Seahawks in Seattle just a few weeks ago.
07:30Matt Stafford had wonderful blocking in that game.
07:33Wonderful blocking.
07:34Right.
07:34Brock Purdy won and won against Seattle this year.
07:37But the most recent one, that offense goes nowhere.
07:40It only scores three points.
07:41Brock Purdy did not have good blocking.
07:44So here's where, and yes, card-carrying president of Brockistan.
07:50That's right.
07:50My number is not one.
07:52My number's none.
07:53It's zero.
07:54That's not me telling you that Brock is a better quarterback than Matt Stafford.
08:00Because that, for me, that's not the metric.
08:02I don't even know exactly what that means when some, okay, that person's better than that person.
08:10For what the 49ers do, you're going to need time if you're Matt Stafford or if you're Brock Purdy.
08:19By the way, if you don't have time, if you are, like, without Trent Williams, if you are against a really good pass rush in the Eagles, who's better?
08:32Matt Stafford or Brock Purdy?
08:33I'd actually take the one with the better mobility.
08:36And there's thousands of metrics we could use.
08:38Would this interest you?
08:40How about this?
08:41Last four times that Brock Purdy and Matt Stafford have been matched up head-to-head against one another.
08:48Here, um, Stafford's passer rating is 108.
08:52Brock's is 120.
08:55Stafford's completion percentage is 63.7.
08:59Brock's is 69.8.
09:02How about touchdown-to-interception ratio?
09:04Stafford's is really good.
09:05It's 10-3.
09:07Brock's is 15-2.
09:09And Matt Stafford's record is 2-2, while Brock's is 4-0.
09:13And again, is that the end-all be-all?
09:16No.
09:17But if you give Brock Purdy time, as we saw, against the Colts and against the Bears and against lesser pass rushers,
09:29I don't, like, you're not going to be wanting for anything.
09:33He has been elite when given what the best offensive lines in the NFL do.
09:40He delivers the damn ball.
09:42He does.
09:43And moves well.
09:43And Stafford does the same thing.
09:45Absolutely.
09:46He throws it a lot quicker than Brock Purdy does.
09:49Purdy will hold it, and he'll try to make plays where Stafford usually doesn't do that.
09:53He'll, if nothing's there, he'll throw it away, or he'll check it down.
09:56So, yeah, we can debate whether or not Stafford is better than Purdy.
10:00And the head-to-head record, like we talked about yesterday, quarterback record is mostly hooey.
10:05So, when Stafford goes up against a Niner defense that's really good, or Purdy goes up against the Ram defense, however good they are.
10:12And, you know, this year, Mack Jones actually beat the Rams, quote-unquote.
10:16Mack Jones gets a win against the Rams, but the defense made two gigantic plays.
10:21So, Mack gets the win.
10:22So, we can talk quarterback wins until the cows come home.
10:26I know this.
10:26I look at the year that these guys had, and I look at Matthew Stafford, and he'll either win the MVP or he'll be second.
10:33However, that's going to go.
10:34And, you know, Brock Purdy won't be in the top five, and part of that is because he missed half the year.
10:38No doubt.
10:39But, you know, Stafford had an amazing year, and his team is, you know, more likely to go out and win this weekend than the Niners are.
10:45And so, yeah, if you had Stafford going to Philly and Purdy taking on Carolina, I think each team has an equal chance of winning that game.
10:54I agree.
10:55And then I can bat right back and go, did you know, I mean, Brock Purdy has a better winning percentage this year.
10:59Brock Purdy has a better quarterback rating this year than the guy who might win MVP.
11:04I actually think he will win MVP.
11:06There's no, I have no holes to poke in Matthew Stafford.
11:09I don't really have an argument with your answer.
11:11I think it's a fair one.
11:12And it's the only answer I wouldn't have an argument with, though.
11:17How about that?
11:17That's fair.
11:19You can argue, Jalen Hurts, but when we get into this conversation, this is where it loses me in part because every quarterback and every system is different.
11:28And Sam Darnold up in Seattle, for example, like what he did against the Niners in that win last Saturday, he didn't light it up because he didn't have to.
11:37He didn't have to.
11:37They could run it, and they went to JSN a few times, and they went to Barner, and they found their way to just win the game.
11:44And so Stafford in L.A., when you've got Devontae and you've got Puka and you've got a variety of other tight ends and you've got a two-headed monster at running back,
11:53they have an offense that hums in part because he led the league in yards.
11:58The other answer to the question, and we're going to go to the calls in just a sec,
12:01so how many other NFC quarterbacks would you basically want this weekend instead of Brock, if any?
12:088-8-9-5-7-9-5-70.
12:11To whittle the conversation back down to the beginning, though, and kind of what Guru asked us,
12:16and we even mentioned this yesterday, obviously the Super Bowl and championships, obviously they matter.
12:25I'm never going to look at sports and say that is the only metric, though.
12:31Of course not.
12:31That cannot, but you say of course not, but for so many people it is.
12:35Who's the better quarterback, Brad Johnson or Dan Marino?
12:38Hello.
12:38Who's the better quarterback, Trent Dilfer or Jim Kelly?
12:42These are, but you know what I'm talking about.
12:45I do.
12:46Who is the better NBA player, Kevin Durant or Patrick McCaw?
12:51Because McCaw has three.
12:54KD's got two.
12:55Kevin's got two, yeah.
12:56And, I mean, if you look at Robert Ory, who's got six, I think?
13:00I think it's seven, actually.
13:01Might be seven.
13:01I don't even know.
13:02So would you put him up there with, like...
13:04Is he better than Charles Barkley?
13:06I mean, I would say yes, just because I don't like Charles Barkley very much.
13:10Robert Ory won seven.
13:12Seven.
13:12And you can cherry pick off the Boston teams that won, like, ten, and some of those guys
13:17you've never heard of.
13:18And, oh, they're better than Michael Jordan, who only got the six.
13:21I'm with you.
13:21Sirianni has proven me wrong about some things with him, no doubt.
13:26But to me, like, that's not even...
13:28I don't even blink before I answer that question of who you'd want, but Sirianni versus Shanahan.
13:34And I think it's a very flimsy argument to simply say, well, Sirianni won.
13:39Sirianni won a Super Bowl.
13:40They both went to two Super Bowls.
13:41One of them went 1-1.
13:42The other one went 0-2.
13:43So, but done.
13:44Done.
13:45Like, you're going to whittle the whole thing down, if I wanted to say it this way, to one
13:52overtime result?
13:52Time result?
13:55Three years ago?
13:56Between the Niners and the Chiefs?
13:57You're going to whittle it down to one?
14:00I'm sorry, two years ago?
14:02I mean, you could look at that and say, well, I mean, Shanahan didn't really have command
14:06of the overtime rules and stuff.
14:08And you can criticize him for that.
14:09And I honestly look at these two coaches, and I can't wait to ask Jason Dumas this when
14:15he joins us at 4-15.
14:16Like, what does Sirianni do?
14:18Because he's not the OC, and he's not the DC.
14:20And it's not to say that he doesn't do anything.
14:22Yeah, he's the HC.
14:23Right.
14:24And, you know, Kyle's the HC, and he's the OC.
14:26So you actually know tangibly what he does and stuff.
14:29He calls the plays, and he also runs the room.
14:31So I'm interested to see what Jason will say about, like, Sirianni.
14:36Like, what does he do?
14:37What's he really good at?
14:38Is he a motivator?
14:39Does he coach the coaches?
14:41Does he play design on offense or defense?
14:43Like, what do you do, Nick?
14:45It'll be an interesting answer.
14:48No doubt.
14:49888-957-9570.
14:51Chris, you'll lead us off.
14:52We'll go to the phones in a second.
14:54Like, here we go.
14:55Okay, Boxer and Gerson work injury attorney's text line.
14:58I appreciate you, 925.
14:59Thank you so much for listening and for patronizing me with your sarcastic text.
15:06Results matter, buddy.
15:08Ooh, I like a buddy.
15:09Hey, buddy, which ones don't?
15:13That's my question.
15:14I also like Chief and Champ.
15:16Like, so many are like, this is the way it works.
15:18You get evaluated every day.
15:20That's not what you're saying.
15:21You're saying you get evaluated one time.
15:25One time.
15:26All the other results of everyday success don't matter.
15:31You want to come back and beat the Packers in the divisional round?
15:34Doesn't matter.
15:35You want to rally from 17 down against the Lions in the NFC title game when the whole world tells you you never come from behind?
15:41Doesn't matter.
15:43Doesn't matter.
15:44You want to go to overtime against the Chiefs?
15:46Okay, great.
15:47Now, that one drive, that matters.
15:48Yep.
15:48And that's how we're going to decide who you are.
15:52If you can't win the big one, then that is a part of your resume.
15:55Well, he's also...
15:56Don't get me started on a 28-3 lead that he blew.
15:59He's also not even...
16:00Is he even 50 yet?
16:01Not even 50 years old yet.
16:02Shani?
16:02No.
16:03No chance.
16:03Okay.
16:04So, like...
16:06The resume is not over yet.
16:08Yeah.
16:08Yeah.
