00:00Previously on Project Runway All Stars.
00:03We want you to design a spring or summer dress for a graduation party.
00:08Dimitri starts passing out colors. It's like freaking Mardi Gras.
00:11Purple and yellow.
00:12Wine red and white.
00:13Ice blue and white.
00:14Blue and yellow.
00:15My season of Project Runway Canada, I won like seven out of the twelve challenges.
00:20I'm sort of left speechless by it.
00:24Orange is a tough color.
00:26I love orange.
00:27I don't think you should be afraid of it.
00:29Thank you, Miss Anne.
00:38I love the 70s vibe. It's so on trend right now.
00:41The proportions are lovely at the back.
00:43It's a very interesting take on graduation.
00:45The winner of this week's challenge is Anthony Ryan.
00:50The edges is what takes it to quinceanera for me.
00:53That fabric is hideous.
00:54The blue on the back, it was just a little bit of a finger up.
00:57Did you just not purchase the blue fabric?
01:00I just made the choice not to use it.
01:02Oh, wow.
01:04Arena and Sunny. You have the lowest scores of the week.
01:07The eliminated designer is Sunny.
01:10This is Project Runway All-Stars.
01:13Where are we going? New work?
01:25We just arrived to Southwest Terminal at MacArthur Airport, Long Island.
01:29Everything's racing through our head.
01:31We're all like, oh my God, where are we going?
01:33Can you tell us where we're going?
01:35Have a safe flight.
01:37You're not going to tell us where we're going?
01:38Enjoy your trip.
01:40I'm thinking Mexico.
01:42I'm guessing DC.
01:43Hi, welcome.
01:44Thanks.
01:45I'm not sure whether we're going somewhere warm or cold, because I'm not dressed for it.
01:50We have the whole plane to ourselves.
01:52Yeah.
01:53Ladies and gentlemen, welcome aboard Southwest Airlines.
01:57This is your captain speaking.
02:00We are happy to have Project Runway season winners from all over the world as passengers for today's journey.
02:07Is that Alyssa?
02:08If she's in the cockpit, dude, we ain't going nowhere.
02:11Hello, designers.
02:16I thought I'd join you on board.
02:18So how are your seats?
02:20Are they comfortable?
02:21Cozy.
02:22Good.
02:23Southwest Airlines has replaced old leather seat covers across their fleet.
02:27Their Love Seat, Repurpose with a Purpose program is a global initiative benefiting communities from Mexico to Kenya.
02:35The program up cycles the leather into affordable fashion accessories like these.
02:42Cool.
02:43Southwest Airlines has come aboard Project Runway All-Stars for our most popular challenge of all time.
02:50The Unconventional Materials Challenge.
02:53It's game on.
02:56You want to win the Unconventional Challenge?
02:58Because that's a title in itself.
03:00I won my Unconventional Challenge when I was on Season 11 of Project Runway.
03:04We had to make a prom dress out of duct tape.
03:07I'm always the bearer of good news, aren't I?
03:09When I did my series of Project Runway in the UK, this challenge wasn't given to us.
03:15So it's going to be a tough one for me.
03:18Your unconventional materials are arriving in baggage claim.
03:23I don't need this ticket.
03:25They're all flight-related.
03:27From seat belts and covers to coffee cups and baggage tags.
03:32And that upcycled leather.
03:35Your challenge is to repurpose these into a glamorous look for modern-day air travel.
03:41Glamorous air travel.
03:43And you must recycle the leather into an accessory for your finished garment.
03:48Southwest isn't just providing materials.
03:51They're giving $5,000 to the winning designer.
03:54And as an additional prize, Southwest will provide you and a guest with a round-trip flight to any of their destinations.
04:02I would love to go to San Francisco and LA.
04:05I want to wear this.
04:06Southwest is also teaming up with a non-profit called ReThreaded.
04:11They are producing a line of All Stars products using the recycled leather.
04:15The winning designer will join them as design consultant and further their mission of women's empowerment.
04:21I'm very into upcycling.
04:24The last collection I did was an entirely upcycled collection.
04:27This is right up my alley.
04:29Your designs must be ready for takeoff in two days.
04:33All right.
04:34We have two days, which is great because it really gives you time to make mistakes and be able to fix them in time for the runway.
04:41Everybody's seat belts off.
04:43Yeah.
04:44Guys, please be civilized.
04:46Come on.
04:47We're all adults.
04:48Your unconventional materials challenge starts right now.
05:05I am very Australian and we have rules.
05:07Rules is rules.
05:08I didn't think we were like animals, like running around the airport just grabbing.
05:12That's all mine, bitch.
05:14That's my pile.
05:15I'm not getting in there.
05:16It's like a scrum.
05:17Guys, two minutes.
05:21Oh my God.
05:22I grab all the cups I can and the air sickness bag.
05:25This is messy.
05:29I'm looking for more shiny things.
05:31First, colorful peanuts and pretzels, reflectors, bright colors.
05:36I got a little carried away.
05:39I grab cocktail stirrers.
05:41They're beautiful red.
05:42They've got a cool red heart.
05:43I grab reflectors.
05:4530 seconds.
05:50That's it, guys.
05:51Time's up.
05:52See y'all later, alligators.
05:54When I was younger, I was a rebel.
05:55I didn't know where I wanted to go or who I wanted to be.
06:01Fashion from a creative outlet seemed to really stick and it seemed to come really naturally.
06:07I think fashion gave me direction.
06:08That's a good find.
06:10Giant jockstrap.
06:11Can you please put it on?
06:12In Amsterdam, there's a lot of stylish people.
06:13We do know fashion.
06:14When I had to pick a school to go to, I was thinking of becoming a chef or a tattoo artist.
06:15And then my mother told me, like, you're always illustrating.
06:16I didn't know where I wanted to go.
06:17I didn't know where I wanted to go or who I wanted to be.
06:18Fashion from a creative outlet seemed to really stick and it seemed to come really
06:20naturally.
06:21I think fashion gave me direction.
06:22I think fashion gave me direction.
06:23That's a good find.
06:25Oh, my gosh.
06:26Such a giant jockstrap.
06:27Can you please put it on?
06:29In Amsterdam, there's a lot of stylish people.
06:32Like, we do know fashion.
06:34When I had to pick a school to go to, I was thinking of becoming a chef or a tattoo artist.
06:39And then my mother told me, like, you're always illustrating.
06:42And you've got the style that your mom has.
06:45So, you should do something with fashion.
06:47You could be a great fashion designer.
06:48And then after that, the rest is history.
06:50Ready?
06:51Woo!
06:52I chose to go with seatbelts and I want to somehow use my seatbelts in their
06:59natural form to create the silhouette which isn't tight it's gonna be looser
07:04simply press release I hate this challenge I hate this challenge I hate
07:12this challenge there's kind of two ways to go about this challenge with your
07:16unconventional material you can either use it where you see what that material
07:21is and you're like ah or you deconstruct it and use it in a different way and I'm
07:27looking to deconstruct I'm a little concerned that I'm only using one item
07:31but if it looks super beautiful and polished the judges will not even think
07:36about the fact that I only use one material what I'm gonna do is make the
07:45judges wonder what the materials are I'm using the cops to give an ombre effect
07:51inspired by Mark Rothko's painting and also tailored shirt using the air
07:58sickness bag give it a Jackson Pollock feel so it's quite abstract so all these
08:03white cups over here are you making a wedding dress absolutely not to the plane
08:09well I don't know I have to completely open the cup flat and individually cut a fringe 500 paper cups
08:20that's a lot of cutting
08:22this challenge I want to come up with something new and different I really want to create like a textile
08:33sort of using these cups creating something that's graphic yet intricate I want to use the circular
08:39shape of the cup to create like a bold modern lace work
08:46I did grab a lot of sunglasses if I pop the lenses out they're gonna look like big
08:50pirate sequence my plan is to kind of mash them together with reflectors and
08:55some patchwork II pattern to look like one shiny thing does anyone have any
09:00glasses that they're not using what do you have to trade yeah right what do you want what do you
09:05want this is neat I was initially gonna make a dress out of air stick bags but then I was looking
09:14around the room and everybody had all this vibrant color and I was thinking maybe I need to add a bit
09:20more color but one good thing I got everything else pretty much so then I changed my idea and went
09:27with the high-vis vest created like a nice bodice out of that and I'm gonna put it with the white
09:33skirt it's quite strong oh my god I hope she's thin oh nice it's really nice Django oh no I'm out
09:41huh I'm out I'm crazy it is like I hate things like this I first started this outfit all in black but
09:51the material is not made to make really organic shapes we got five minutes I have a lot of things
10:00here that are not but it's it's done unfortunately Django having some struggles I don't know what we're
10:10gonna sing on the runway I really don't know that's time guys let's get out of here I only have the
10:18material and I cannot make anything out of it so I have to quit coming up on Project Runway All Stars
10:26what the heck Jasper is running around crazy this is a bold statement who would wear it I know it's
10:33a seatbelt but it isn't looks a lot like seatbelts to me Seth is giving you car wash it's looking
10:38terrible plug in the glue gun totally do did you have an unconventional challenge in your season Jasper
10:51in my season no we didn't so what do you think about this it's quite interesting actually because
10:57it forces you to be creative so I put the materials onto the brother sewing machine it is tough one wrong
11:05move on this materials it will rip I'm starting all over what are you making I'm going to do this
11:13hauled her dress with the vomit bags and I hope the judges won't form it over it and otherwise I'm still
11:22bagged no for hi designers oh my god it's the unconventional challenge so I love the unconventional
11:34challenge you all may hate it but because you've all won we want this to be the very best unconventional
11:40challenge runway that Project Runway around the world has ever seen there's a lot of pressure I'm
11:46here to help let's get started Michelle hi this is such a joyful color combination what is this pink
11:53stuff it looks like leather it's actually muslin which is why I'm covering the entire thing with
11:58these reflectors oh the whole thing is gonna be covered with reflectors so what's going on with your
12:03accessory I made a bag okay as well as a keychain okay was there any conversation about the fact that the
12:08accessory has to match the garment they don't go together like this is not going at least doesn't
12:14look like you tried to get them to go together hey Anthony Ryan congrats on your win thank you
12:19what's going on where's your dress I know right yesterday was about patterning I tested this okay
12:26this week I'm doing more of a jumpsuit slash romper I'm working on the textile and seeing where it
12:31goes I feel like I'm wasting your time you gotta get go I started out with this plastic material what
12:39happened it didn't really work with me because I wanted to have these organic shapes so now I'm
12:44working with this vomit bag oh the vomit bag oh my god how classy I just think it looks like you have a
12:50lot more work to do and you've already had almost two days I think it's looking a little 90s and a
12:56little horse bridal horse bridal what is that hi Jasper hi and how familiar are you with using
13:04unconventional materials this is the first time okay so here's the thing you need to do more than
13:09cut up paper mm-hmm I've seen a lot of originality and creativity in the room and I don't think this is
13:15gonna stand out this will be colored in I'm gonna use the leather belt from the airline see upcycled
13:22leather yes okay and also a matching clutch okay and you haven't started the top yet no all right
13:28listen you're a winner I know you can do this it's time to push yourself now I ended up with the
13:34brochures oh you're kidding yeah do you feel that you've hidden the fact that it's paper are you
13:39celebrating the fact that it's paper well the fact that you didn't know right away was good what did
13:44you make this out of a lot of these kinds of belts it's for close the luggage mm-hmm pocket pockets
13:52make everyone happy so tell me what is this let's hear about this it's a hat I really want to create
13:59this sort of denim texture because we all love to wear a pair of jeans the airport this is a very
14:04bold giant statement yeah I'm a little concerned I don't know about this hat that Irina designing who
14:14would wear it so I'm guessing you're embracing the seat belt right we're not trying to hide that this
14:18is no no exactly I know it's a seat belt but it isn't right looks a lot like seat belts to me I think
14:27Seth Aaron hasn't really used the material to its full advantage it's lacking a little bit of
14:33creativity on how we use and conventional materials this looks fantastic this is a whole new side of
14:40you so what are you using here um it's like a top this was black and this is a different piece yeah
14:45yeah it's very Alexander Wang oh cool thank you can I have a snack you sure can and you've got like
14:51hundreds of them in there how long has it been taking you to empty enough bags of peanuts well
14:56to do about half of this leg took about an hour I'm not sure where that's going but I know you're
15:00gonna take it there thanks for the peanuts yeah you're welcome these are actually aviator glasses lenses
15:07mm-hmm that I popped out as like a Piat sequin and then I've kind of gridded it out with these reflectors
15:13I see Sean's vision but it's not working these materials are really stifling him from this
15:20perspective it just feels a little literal to me I just doesn't look like a home run yet in Australia
15:26I actually designed the uniforms for one of the airlines the question is did you design the uniforms
15:31with the material how is this going what are you using what is this blue stuff from it's actually from
15:37the high-vis vest I unpicked it so it was on top of this what's this made out of spew bags spew bags
15:45is that what they call them in Australia yeah very good use of the materials I just think the shape
15:52itself is not so high fashion it's a pretty traditional sort of prom dress yep I hope Julie's
16:00look is amplified enough to get her through but I'm kind of concerned that it's very boring designers you
16:08know I love an unconventional challenge some of you are concerned however this is project on my
16:13all-stars and all you need to be concerned about is sending an amazing look down the runway good luck
16:19everyone how'd it go Jesper yeah that's right I have a lot to do I'm really pushing myself this week
16:29because I do want to show the judges what I can do you use an old paper huh yeah but it won't look like
16:37paper I don't want it to look like paper what'd she say about this one babe um she thought it looked
16:42like a prom dress and not very high fashion oh I think it's really cute it's okay it's me yeah what
16:49I see Julie making doesn't have a lot of wow factor it's pretty but it kind of looks like a basic dress
16:56hi there I've made some pants and I have a top out of seat belts let's see both a little bondagey as I
17:08put this on the model you know it's working for it's fitting her perfectly yeah see they're they're
17:13doing this that's exactly what I want it to do Seth is giving you car wash I mean it's looking terrible
17:20this is the winner I got some on your shoulders okay kind of have my top ready I just spray painted
17:33it so it's not completely dry rest of the bathroom I have it all over my hands too I decided I'm going
17:38to use red because it could be really sexy and really pop on the runway I really hope the judges
17:43sort of see the fun and whimsy of this look hey guys two hours till the end of the day
17:57right now I'm in a slight panic because I'm about two hours behind and I'm waiting for paint to dry
18:16for that dry how's it coming um getting there getting there yeah my ass goes home I'll go home happy
18:29because I'll really like this it's so me yeah Jasper yeah don't freak out but we got 30 minutes
18:37what Jasper is running around crazy nobody knows what he's doing I actually can't wait to see what he
18:45does we got five minutes that's time everybody run away tomorrow coming up on project runway all-stars
19:02Seth Aaron's in trouble like click it ticket see you later perfect oh no start over Jasper is training
19:10his model like a dog knees together like a lady do it again oh for a girl
19:16warning of the runway and I'm back and forth from the brother sewing room to the workstation oh my god
19:27this is stressing me out I'm doing a tailored shirt closing the skirt as well putting the zips on yeah I'm
19:35about to lose my mind I immediately start finishing the accessory because I know I've neglected it the
19:43whole time it's a race to get that all together you have to completely cover it yeah fun right
19:48morning they're like nymph pants let's try on the skirt okay I think I need to turn them into a skirt
19:58can you stand back for a minute right now I'm looking at my model thinking just get it together
20:03Julie like there are some exceptional looks out there and I'm looking at mine thinking it's boring it's safe
20:11I get to see Julie's looks really for the first time and it is classic whether or not she's used
20:18unconventional materials enough I'm not too sure I hit the JC Penney accessory wall I grabbed the most
20:24beautiful high-heeled wedgie strappy shoes that will just perfect this look so as you put on the shoe
20:32I'm just gonna show you Jasper has this thing and it's a pose that he wants to do with every look
20:40and then turn and slowly and it's like a little back turn she comes out she puts a hand here every
20:48little movement has to tell a story perfect oh no who walks into a room like that let's do it I
20:58want it to be perfect Jasper is training his model like a dog knees together like a lady do it again oh
21:06poor girl gentle gentle gentle I have arrived that's perfect welcome to Umberto Beverly Hills we
21:16just wanted to head pull back up and a little bit messy so we're gonna use the dry texture spray I want
21:22big as big as you can make it just a big natural afro okay so we use the Umberto Roman oil to give
21:28it a little bit of shine welcome to the butter London makeup and nail studio thank you so we're
21:34gonna do an easy face great lashes and a very glossy lip we're gonna start with some butter London
21:40double-decker lashes and then the butter London lippy okay lipstick so I was thinking like a strong eye
21:45really modern as well we've got the glaze and eyeliner turn do like a whole spray paint doesn't
21:57want to stick like are more things gonna come undone as she's walking so I'm adding a little more glue
22:04Irene's look is fabulous just to top it all off she makes this fabulous bag damn it we got 30 minutes you
22:11guys yeah I'm happy with the silhouette I think she looks really cool and modern shot oh my god shot it
22:20just reminds me of a sunglass stole Jesper is the sneaky type that acts all stressed out and blah blah
22:30blah and then comes up with something beautiful friends I love what I've done sorry about that velcro in
22:38her Seth Aaron's in trouble like click it ticket see you later everybody five minutes I don't know
22:46how I got this done I've never worked under this much pressure and had so much to do I think Michelle's
22:53material will be very effective on the runway but in terms of silhouette it's a bit been there done that
22:59that's time all right don't forget your accessories wait wait wait I'm like don't make big movements thank
23:08you otherwise the whole thing will just collapse coming up on project runway all-stars intense fierce fun
23:18you're an all-star it really is one notch up from what we've ever seen before it embodies everything that
23:24this challenge is all about I'm sorry I don't like this dress I adore this dress
23:30the winner of project runway all-stars will collaborate with JC Penney on a capsule collection

31:58dress like even the boot looks cute with it I'm telling you you really hit it out of the park today
32:05thank you I'm so glad this is what I wrote intense fierce fun I'm all about details and I love the
32:12mesh detail I think that's totally different very unconventional but very cool I know you think that
32:17this is what you normally put out there but to me this is far and above maybe it was the paper cups
32:23I also know Seth Aaron I wanted a simplified palette and embrace what it was these are all how
32:30they came off the airplane I wanted to invent a new silhouette I want to like this more than I do
32:35to be honest I love the hem but I really wish they had been pressed straight that's as good as I can get
32:42them I know and believe we've all been there and sometimes things don't work how we want them to so
32:47then we have to think again right this is sort of my favorite challenge it requires a wit and I
32:53applaud your attempt but you didn't take it far enough away because this looks like a dress made
33:00of seat belts I feel like I'm looking at a reluctant dominatrix love that you celebrated the unconventional
33:09materials with the lights hitting it the reflection is making it look like a mistake rather than purposeful
33:16yeah hi Sean I used aviator glasses and turned them into payettes and I also used luggage straps and
33:25reflectors there's something unresolved about the size of the dress you're an all-star something
33:33doesn't reflect the caliber of designer that you are reflect no pun intended I do like the pop of
33:40color and I like it with the aviators it does feel very fun and modern and cool you're almost bad with
33:46this dress it's just gone slightly in the wrong direction Sean I really like this dress I give
33:51it a high score it embodies everything that this challenge is all about thank you hi Julie I actually
33:57got a sick bags and created the skirt with a luggage belt and security vest I thought this was a very
34:05successful look I love how you layered the skirt I love the belt and I really like your accessory it's a
34:11perfectly nice dress but we need to see a point of view and I'm just not getting this from this look
34:16this is where you can really push your boundaries so it just worries me that you're not quite confident
34:23enough yet the irony is you use safety vests as a material and you played it safe you're so right
34:30the irony is that dress is made of air sick bags and it makes me air sick sorry Jasper the inspiration
34:39is Peggy Guggenheim I treated the skirt and gave it a Rothko finish and the sick bag Jackson Pollock I love
34:48the shot I can't believe that's made of sick bags how many are that 70, 70, 70, 70, 70, yes 76 bags in
34:58that shot yes this is one of my favorites but she doesn't come across as a Peggy Guggenheim she comes
35:04across as like a bimbo like a kind of tongue-in-cheek bimbo and I like it I really do like it well then call
35:11me a bimbo no I won't be the first time but the first name I wrote and you may be in trouble oh I said
35:18this is Michelle Obama okay and that's no bimbo I think it's very finished and polished and I think
35:30that a lot of us aspire to be that woman I think this is a great example of a very classic silhouette
35:36but done exceptionally well for this challenge thank you designers and thank you to your models
35:42the judges and I are now going to discuss and we will call you back oh my god hey guys how was it
35:58they appreciated my thought process but they didn't like it they said that it was very safe
36:05and I'm an all-star and I need to bring it it's crazy well let's start with the most successful
36:12looks I want to start with arena because I think she really turned it around this week she did and
36:18she really listened I think she rose to the occasion most the proportion was excellent mod but still
36:26modern I just thought it was very like you could feel like a young cool pop star wearing it to an
36:30event for sure and that oversized bag I thought was brilliant Southwest actually sells them
36:35Michelle the texture to me was everything it looks so expensive and that red was just beautiful that
36:48dress came across as a mystery to me like it could have been another time did her accessory bother you
36:55yes yeah I thought the reflection with the metallic I think it kind of compliments one another
37:01Jasper I love this I adore this dress as well I just want to eat him with a spoon total couture
37:10he thought about a belt and such a flattering one it is though a pencil skirt they're all simple
37:16shaped dresses I think it's the way that you treat it
37:19let's move on to our least favorite looks I would like to start with Shawn because I like this look I
37:28didn't mind this though I just felt like it had humor and it's yeah it felt like a California girl
37:33or something looking at Julie's next to Shawn's I realized the risk he took I really like the neckline
37:39on this dress me too let's move on to Seth Aaron it wasn't pleasant to look at it was witless to
37:48someone so witty I think he was going for something that didn't translate this makes me wonder who Seth
37:54is as a designer let's talk about Julie I found that dress really depressing the skirt was the wrong
38:02length that neckline the proportion on the shoulder I think that the top was very ill-fitting and it was
38:08too basic I think basic some stuff have we made our final decision we know what we're gonna do okay
38:16let's bring them out designers the unconventional challenge is always so difficult to judge just
38:27because of the extreme design constraints that you're under but we have made our decision
38:38Jasper Arena Michelle one of you is the winner of this week's challenge Michelle you did a great job
38:47and you are safe Jasper and Arena which of you made a first-class outfit and wins five thousand dollars

40:41I don't believe I had the losing look this week
40:46there's that wit
40:47but I'm a professional I can respect their decision
40:51I'm gone
40:52oh my god

41:17but you know what happens
41:19so you pick yourself up and you just move on
41:24next on project runway all-stars
41:27what your challenge is to celebrate a woman's figure by incorporating a corset into a high
41:32fashion look
41:33some people are twitching
41:35I've never used a corset before
41:39out of my finger
41:41this is not a forgiving fabric
41:42I don't like just this look
41:44with the fans it's just like
41:45I don't think this top suit's special
41:47this corset is just a sex shop with some fringe on it
41:52the shape that it gives her body is so beautiful
41:55I think she looks in a good way like a fashion armadillo
41:58that kills walls
42:11okay
42:17do
42:20you
