00:00Harvest Moon Friends of Mineral Town.
00:02This is my favorite game in the series, and one of the only ones I had as a kid.
00:07It's not going to stop me from criticizing it though.
00:10There's so much namespace, cool!
00:13I wish every game had that much namespace.
00:16I really didn't need shipping explained to me.
00:19It is lame that you don't make money off shipped items until the day after a festival
00:24if it's a festival date, unlike in the first game where the shipper came over on festival
00:29days.
00:31So why is this a better game than the previous one?
00:34Aside from the obvious that you aren't restricted to only two days where you can buy seeds and
00:39animals, and you're never going to have to worry about being stuck in bed all day because
00:45you worked in the rain.
00:47It doesn't look as nice buying animals from a list.
00:52I get to start out with a honey tree that produces apples in the fall, and the harvest
00:57sprites love honey.
00:59After you go to the lake, you have to walk for a while to go all the way back home.
01:05There's no shortcut down the mountain, and every time you go to the north side of town,
01:09you gotta go all the way back home.
01:12The level design is too linear.
01:14It'd be best if your farm was in the center.
01:17I hate that you have to go into the inventory screen and have the cursor over the watering
01:21can to know how much water is left.
01:24And even then, that doesn't tell you how many times you can fully charge it up and use it.
01:29So it'll always come as a surprise when you run out of water because you don't see a water meter on the screen at all times.
01:36Which is always a problem in the series.
01:38Especially since you still use up stamina even when you're out of water in the earliest games.
01:45But that's not the case here.
01:47Rucksack upgrades are bought at the supermarket.
01:50Rather than getting the better bag handed to you on your birthday, you have to earn the rucksack upgrades by earning the money for them.
01:58By the point in the game where the second upgrade comes on sale, its price isn't an inconvenience.
02:03But the first upgrade is terrible for costing you anything considering that the starting bag size is so small.
02:11You also have to wait an arbitrary amount of time you're not told about before the last rucksack goes on sale.
02:17And something easy to not know is that you can get a tool straight from iron to Mysterio level
02:23Because the blacksmith lets you upgrade a tool to whatever metal is an improvement.
02:28They took advantage of time being frozen in the months to put hundreds of floors in it which is hours of your life wasted.
02:35The fishing rod is the worst to upgrade because it takes longer to use it than the other tools.
02:41Way too many stores of this game close too early for my liking.
02:45Like at 5pm. Why can't they close after you get your money?
02:50In 64, giving gifts to one of the sprites counted for all of them.
02:55Why can't they do that again?
02:58The Harvest Sprites have experience bars that aren't affected by their affection level this time.
03:04There's the option to play a minigame with a sprite to raise their experience bar in one stand.
03:09And these minigames take an entire minute.
03:13I think the difference from doing those minigames enough times isn't one you're actually going to notice.
03:19But a kid's not going to know that.
03:21Doing minigame with every sprite is a massive pace breaker.
03:26Pretty soon, I stopped playing them.
03:29The animal feed minigame is fun.
03:31But the Harvest one is literally just mashing A and making sure not to mash it too fast.
03:37Or you'll have to press A more slowly.
03:39You can do it with your eyes closed.
03:42So the only reason I don't like it is how long it takes.
03:46And the watering game forces you to memorize where to water in a place full of soil.
03:51But there's way too much soil, so it's harder than it looks.
03:56One of the things that didn't age well about Friends of Mineral Town is that you can't sell all of the perfectly good flowers around.
04:03When that isn't the case in the previous game.
04:06That was kind of fixed in more Friends of Mineral Town.
04:10But not in a way that was good enough obviously, because you still can't ship them.
04:14It's a pain in the ass to merely have to keep flowers in your 9 item bag and sell them all to one, one at a time.
04:22And then have to go back to get more flowers.
04:26When I played this file, I didn't do any ranching as both a way to make the game more fun and go buy a lot faster.
04:33It was an experiment to see how long it'd take to buy everything.
04:37It's actually worth it.
04:39As long as you've watched the TV shopping channel, you can still order something over the phone the next day.
04:46But a lot of players aren't going to know that and try it.
04:49I forgot about this.
04:51Another thing you'll only find out if you're desperate is that you can still hire sprites on festival days.
04:58I hate that Mary's last heart event skips time ahead by hours so far that you won't be able to go into any buildings for the day.
05:06At least events don't end the day.
05:09I hate that after you've chosen which task you want a sprite to do, you can't back out of it when trying to choose the amount of days.
05:17But that's not new.
05:19You can't talk to one of them again and change your mind if you made a mistake.
05:24This applies to three, but its default option was harmless so it didn't matter.
05:30I hate that there even is an option for one day because it's completely pointless.
05:36It's not like there's a penalty for hiring sprites for a longer amount of time like DS.
05:42If you have enough money, it doesn't even matter if you have them losing their hearts faster.
05:48If it's better to hire them for a week, then the three days option is a waste of time.
05:54You're better off not giving them gifts when they're working and instead wait for them to slack off in front of the tree because they're done work.
06:02Giving gifts to people in general is harder because you can run through them.
06:06The sprites start walking out of your farm as early as 9.
06:10The library's many bookshelves don't tell you everything you'd really need to know, let alone to get 100%.
06:17Instead mostly just tell you the obvious stuff.
06:21So let's see if there's anything wrong with them.
06:23The second bookshelf, on Animal Festival minigames, while the bookshelf tells you that you can't enter with a pony,
06:30it doesn't tell you the vital information of how to get a horse.
06:34Because God forbid you simply buy it.
06:37Instead, Barley gives you a pony at some point, after you talk to him.
06:43The bookshelf instead gives you the bad advice to not always go for the sure winner when betting on a horse.
06:49It's bad enough gambling is in the game.
06:52I hate that you can only exchange medals for a prize, one at a time.
06:58It takes forever to fully fill the basket with truffles.
07:02I've read a guide saying that you should do brooches instead of truffles,
07:07and for the remake they say you should do dresses.
07:11And it's lame that you can't exit the festival before all of its horse races are done,
07:15and have to go all the way back to the square to get to the beach,
07:19because leaving from anywhere sends you home.
07:22Every festival traps you in it.
07:24If it's called Rose Square, by the way, where are all the roses?
07:29The third bookshelf tells you the controls.
07:32This bookshelf doesn't tell you that pressing A and B together brings up the item menu a lot faster.
07:38Eln's start brings up the world map, and Eln's select brings up the farm map,
07:43where for no good reason you aren't showing which stage of growth your crops are in
07:47and just showing them fully grown,
07:50but it does tell you which ones were watered.
07:53The fourth bookshelf tells you the obvious about raising crops,
07:57like the fact that you can waste seeds in this game.
08:01I used to appreciate the time was frozen in the mines because you made more money that way,
08:05but it makes passing the days take forever when you can spend so much time in the mines,
08:11so it would actually be better if instead mining items weren't ridiculously cheap in their selling price.
08:18The most valuable bookshelf is the fifth one,
08:21which tells you upfront how many days each crop takes to grow.
08:25I wish the game just said the amount of days instead of forcing you to add the days together for each phase.
08:31Who would care about how many days it takes to get past the earliest phases?
08:37The first bookshelf on the second floor just tells you the obvious about mining.
08:42It doesn't even tell you exactly how many stamina and fatigue points the black grass will recover,
08:47which is barely any.
08:49It tells you to eat powerberries immediately, even though you'll do that automatically.
08:54The second bookshelf gives you an important hint about how to get the fishing rod,
08:59but if you go into Juan's shop curious about what he's selling,
09:02you'll find the rod without the bookshelf just by playing the game.
09:06You'd think that the information about where and when to fish to catch every species of fish in particular
09:11would be put in the fishing bookshelf.
09:14Instead of you being forced to either look up a guide or watch the fishing show on Mondays
09:20to get spoon-fed a tiny bit of information every time.
09:25The show doesn't even tell you which fishing rod level to use.
09:29The third top bookshelf tells you the obvious about ranching.
09:33It tells you exactly how long it takes for a chick to hatch and grow up separately.
09:38Twice as fast.
09:41And how long it takes for a colfubot to become an adult.
09:44A week.
09:46Which is faster than I'm used to.
09:48Three times as fast.
09:51For no reason, a lamb takes two weeks to grow up instead.
09:56The game tells you that you have to brush them and talk to them once a day,
10:01rather than telling you the truth that once you've raised them to max hearts,
10:05you don't have to waste your time with that anymore.
10:08So the book lied.
10:10The fourth bookshelf is empty unless you connect with A Wonderful Life.
10:14It says barely anything.
10:17And nothing you wouldn't already know from the game.
10:20But you can just read a connectivity guide to read everything about the characters in that game
10:25that would have been in that bookshelf.
10:27The fifth bookshelf just tells you the obvious about the various stores in the game.
10:32But it would have been nice to actually be told that the maximum it could cost to upgrade a tool would be 5000g.
10:39Or that you can skip tool levels.
10:42The supermarket book doesn't bother to tell you anything except the obvious.
10:47So you're not told that you can go in there to buy stuff past 5pm if you get care enough to Blue Heart by buying stuff from it regularly.
10:56It doesn't tell you that you can go into stores earlier by befriending the owner.
11:01It lies to you that you wouldn't be able to buy an ingredient more than one at a time without a fridge.
11:06And what is this about? Some ingredients are only sold seasonally.
11:10Speaking of misinformation, you cannot buy anything while you're holding something.
11:15Thank goodness that's not true.
11:18Befriending the harvest bites earlier on would be miserable.
11:22The guy will just deliver it to your fridge or shelf if you have one.
11:26For some reason, the Blue Feather goes on sale when a girl's at Orange Heart.
11:31I hate that the seed shop in this game is two days off.
11:35But if I can say one extra good thing about the supermarket.
11:39It's that Mary likes chocolate.
11:42That's great for fall when it's the only gift she likes I can find until I can make vegetable juice.
11:47Because there aren't any blue grass until it's spring again.
11:50The market's close to her and only costs the same amount of money a blue grass would make you.
11:55And it's lame that the only way you can put something in the fridge or shelf if it's gift wrapped.
12:00Is to take off the gift wrap you had to pay for.
12:04Considering that costs 100g.
12:06And can only be done at the supermarket.
12:09I think gift wrapping is a waste of time and money for the bachelorette you're wooing specifically.
12:14Because thanks to the way the TV shopping channel works.
12:17You have to wait until year 2 to propose successfully anyways.
12:21So why get her to Red Heart faster?
12:24If you give a bachelorette every day you can you'll probably have her at max points by the 19th of fall.
12:31The game lies to you about Gotts' shop working hours.
12:35It says on the sign that he's closed on Saturdays.
12:38But what it doesn't say is that it's also closed sometime after 12.
12:42Because when it's 12 he's busy walking around the forest for no reason.
12:48Under expanding your house it says that you can also build a second floor.
12:54No you can't.
12:56It's cool that expanding your coop can let you use two incubators.
13:01Why do you have to expand your coop and barn to be able to order the building of the makers anyways?
13:07It's actually a downgrade from the previous game that you even have to expand your barn and coop.
13:13Instead of being able to get eight animals from the start.
13:16The clinic bookshelf doesn't tell you about the ballpark range of how much stamina and fatigue points you have.
13:22Depending on what the doctor will tell you about your health.
13:25But it's a useless waste of a small amount of money.
13:28Because you're probably going to remember what your last stamina animation was.
13:32I'm not at max stamina here.
13:35So what's the point of this?
13:37The bookshelf also reminds me that the winery has a ridiculously small amount of store hours.
13:43Not that it matters because since when will you care about buying wine or grape juice?
13:48It's useful at the bookshelf to tell you that you can make chicken feed by putting corn in the water wheel near the coop.
13:54A sign near the water wheel tells you that anyways.
13:58But you're probably not going to read that sign because you're just going to think it tells you something self explanatory.
14:04Being able to make chicken feed is good for emergencies.
14:08Of course you have to think to stock up on corn just in case though.
14:12And it's so much better to just ship the corn for all the money it makes.
14:17And just remember to keep buying chicken feed.
14:19It's shocking that the price for a chicken is not told to you by this bookshelf.
14:24Which could have saved you a trip to the poultry farm.
14:27The bookshelf doesn't ever tell you the exact prices of any of the stores.
14:32Which could save you a trip there.
14:34It does remind you of the fact that the cow store closes ridiculously early.
14:39Closing at 3pm.
14:41It won't bother you though because I'm always in town before that time.
14:46The bookshelf lies to you that in Juan's shop different seeds are sold in different seasons.
14:52His shop is a convenient feature of selling those seeds all year long.
14:57And it won't tell you how to use the frisbee.
15:00Which you'd think you would be able to use anywhere and not just to the public beach with your donk.
15:06It also would have been nice if the bookshelf warned you not to waste your money on the jewel of truth.
15:11Because you won't be able to get all of them until 50 years in game.
15:15And it should tell you not to buy the frisbee until the second year.
15:18Because your dog can't play with the frisbee as a puppy.
15:21For no reason.
15:23There's also more stuff you could have figured out on your own.
15:26But at least it'd be trying to be useful.
15:28The sixth bookshelf tells you that you need a shelf because you need a place to hold your kitchen utensils.
15:35Which is thankfully just another bit of misinformation.
15:38You don't actually get room on your shelf permanently spent on holding utensils.
15:43The seventh bookshelf on top tells you the obvious about tools.
15:48The bookshelf doesn't bother to tell you why you should ever have the pedometer in your tool bag.
15:53Enough steps on it gets the goddess to congratulate you.
15:58You can actually marry her in this game.
16:00And there's a lot more strict requirements for it.
16:03Which somehow involve fish for the harvest goddess.
16:07But don't bother marrying her because she doesn't bother living in your house.
16:12The game never tells you how to summon the goddess.
16:15And you certainly wouldn't think that if you keep it up after the first reward.
16:19You get offered a small boost of affection to the girl of your choice.
16:23I read that if you want to marry the goddess.
16:26And you choose a different girl here.
16:28You can't marry her.
16:30The game never warns you about that either.
16:32She never even explains why she won't live with you.
16:36She does but she's too vague.
16:38I don't know what those duties are.
16:42You'd think you would have gotten to know her better after getting married.
16:45So you should have been told what those duties were.
16:48She doesn't do anything in the spring.
16:51She just stands there all day.
16:53I'm imagining all she ever does is watch TV.
16:56So why can't she do that at home?
16:58The book also warns you of the nonsense that you could have learned anyways.
17:02That you can't shear pregnant sheep.
17:04The 8th bookshelf tells you that you can get the harvest rights to help out at your farm.
17:10Which is actually vital information for a new player who never know otherwise that they could do that.
17:16Because not everyone's gonna talk to everybody in the town.
17:20In a time management based game.
17:22So you're focused on making as much money in the little time you have.
17:26The 9th bookshelf is completely worthless.
17:29It tells you the obvious about stamina and fatigue.
17:33But doesn't bother to tell you exactly how many points of stamina and fatigue will be restored from entering the hot spring.
17:40It doesn't tell you the vital information that you should limit your time in the hot spring to 2 hours.
17:46It doesn't tell you that things changed since Harvest Moon Super Nintendo in the previous game.
17:51And you actually do need to stay in the hot spring for a while instead of just hopping in and out of it.
17:57Also, it tells you that putting a flower in the vase will do, uh, something.
18:03But it doesn't bother telling you which flowers have an effect or how useful it is.
18:09Why can't all of the flowers restore fatigue points?
18:13That makes just as much sense as one of them doing it.
18:17Wouldn't it be nice if the bookshelf told you what day of the year one tries to sell the vase for?
18:22Game FAQs doesn't tell me.
18:25It's not always the first day of a month.
18:28The bookshelf also tells you that if you throw wood in the fireplace in the winter specifically,
18:34you'll recover some fatigue points.
18:37You'll need a guide to find out where you can get the jewels of truth.
18:41Especially because you won't find them when you don't have a shelf, thankfully.
18:45I felt like looking up whether the winery job pays more than working normally.
18:50Which is what sucks about him not telling you how much it pays.
18:54That once again you have to trust that the game's gonna be fair about it.
18:59I love a few things about the winery job in the autumn.
19:03I love that if you show up at the winery after 10 exactly, you don't get a lecture about being late.
19:10Why can't the Harvest Sprite tent ever be open past 6?
19:14I can't hire sprites on the day of the winery job because I run out of time to.
19:19But it is cool that you can still see some things in the shipping list even before you shipped one of them.
19:26When you're mining, you always end up having your inventory full anyways because the basket only holds 30 items.
19:33So you have to end up throwing things away in exchange for more valuable items that you just got.
19:39It's hard to memorize the prices of every other fancy orange gem past gold to know which one to keep around.
19:46As you can see, a lot of problems with the game become worse if you try to save up for the townhouse.
19:52At least you can fish with time frozen beach festivals.
19:56You have to look up how to get into the confessional.
19:59It's disappointing how it's random which options you're given.
20:03So you can't always confess that you overworked the Harvest Sprites.
20:07I can't get the second option on my main files.
20:11The middle and last line, I just can't get them.
20:15No matter how many times I reload.
20:18You'd think someone who was mean enough that sometimes he refuses to forgive you
20:24would just tell you that he doesn't believe you about you hiring the sprites.
20:28Wouldn't he make a big deal out of you hiring immortal beings to work on your farm?
20:33The game never tells you that you can get minor affection bonus for the relevant people or animals
20:38if you pick the right option at the confessional.
20:41Which you can only use for a confession once a day.
20:44This isn't intuitive.
20:46I'd expect that you get a decrease in affection from this since Carter yells at you and says the goddess hasn't forgiven you.
20:53Which isn't something the priest in a confessional is supposed to do.
20:56And isn't in character for him either.
20:59I thought it was a pointless detail that was only there to make the church seem like a real church.
21:05And it's random whether you're told that you weren't forgiven.
21:08Of course if you say before the confessional you can reload afterwards to get the forgiveness text.
21:14And when you aren't forgiven you don't get the affection boost or stamina of fatigue replenishing.
21:19Depending on which option you chose.
21:22The affection boost could probably save me the time of giving a gift to a sprite.
21:27But I'd have to go all the way to the church to do this.
21:31It'd take less time to gift the sprites.
21:34I looked up how to get the kingfish.
21:37The kingfish are handled more creatively than they were in the previous game.
21:41Which I have a bit of respect for.
21:43For example you need to fish in the hot spring for one.
21:47You'd end up checking everywhere you can fish and find it eventually.
21:51The problem is the game starts the trend of needing a guide to catch almost every kingfish in the game.
21:57Unless that fishing channel tells you how to catch these guys.
22:00And it really doesn't.
22:02You need a guide because the fishing channel doesn't give you all the information.
22:07Even if it did.
22:09Having to tune in every Monday to watch it episode by episode will take forever.
22:14And you could easily forget stuff from it after a lot of time.
22:18So you'd have to write some of it down.
22:21Anyone trying for all the kingfish is going to try to do it all at once.
22:25So the fishing channel would only show up for one day of the process assuming it only takes a week.
22:31And probably won't be airing a kingfish episode.
22:35Because it only airs those at the end of the month.
22:38Anyone trying to get them all is probably going to use the internet.
22:42You wouldn't think any fish could survive the hot spring.
22:46So I never thought there'd be a fish in there.
22:48But it might be possible for someone to think a kingfish is there because kingfish are special fish.
22:54So they could be magical.
22:56It's also intuitive that there's a kingfish in the lake in the winter mine.
23:00At least it's only on the 9th level.
23:03Oh, but you can only catch it after you caught all of the other kingfish.
23:08The fishing channel does tell you this.
23:11But it goes out of its way to avoid telling you where to catch it.
23:14So you won't know what fish the channel is talking about.
23:17What if it's not the last one you go for?
23:20It'd be the first one you try due to its location.
23:23Because they're always going to discover it when going through the mine.
23:28You can only catch the Japanese hutchin after making sushi, sashimi, and grilled fish.
23:34But it's not a problem because trying to catch all of the kingfish is something you'd only do after you were done with everything else in the game.
23:41Except for the townhouse because most people aren't going to bother with that.
23:45You apparently have to throw a small fish in the ocean to be able to fish up the squid.
23:51So you'll be hoping that doesn't count as littering and make the town lose affection for you.
23:55It'd be stupid if it did.
23:57How is throwing a still living fish back in the ocean littering?
24:02But it's not like the game gives you a visual indicator that you did litter.
24:07I think this is the first game that has littering.
24:10So you won't even know about it.
24:12The only kingfish you'd be able to catch without a guide is the monkfish.
24:17Because you could do that by accident.
24:19Especially since the sea is the only place you'd fish anytime you do go fishing in the summer and autumn.
24:25What's thankfully the only requirement for the carp is you have to ship over 200 fish.
24:32You might have already done that by that point.
24:35But it sucks if you haven't.
24:37Sweet potatoes are a multi-harvest crop that have a new crop every day after they start producing.
24:45They make you a huge amount of money if you just plant a bunch of them and hire the sprites.
24:50Harvest sprites like apples, so fall is convenient for you.
24:54On winter 29th, you can't see the TV shopping channel because of a boring other show replacing it.
25:01The game introduced relationship decaying.
25:04So befriending isn't a permanent accomplishment.
25:08Which means you don't have to do it unless you care about seeing all the events.
25:13In my current playthrough, I only did mining both to upgrade my tools.
25:18And because if I was going to be spamming the hammer in order to upgrade it, I might as well use it on the rocks.
25:25Without having to do any ranching or fishing, after giving up on mining in the middle of the fall,
25:31My character got married in early summer of year 2 with tons of money the last time I played the game.
25:37Combined the almost lack of stuff to buy in the game with the fact that you can almost completely automate the farming.
25:43Which defeats the appeal of playing a farming game when all you're really doing is foraging and fishing.
25:48I hate to say it, but this game gets too easy.
25:52The first spring was too hard because the tool upgrading system sucks and so is the inventory system.
25:57And I don't know why you can't cut stumps with the regular axe and can't destroy boulders until upgrading the hammer anymore.
26:04See my magical melody review for anything I didn't talk about regarding this game.
26:08Like all the festivals and why ranching takes forever.
26:12I didn't talk about all the character events either.
26:15It's just dialogue really.
26:17So there's nothing to say about it.
26:19They're interesting.
26:21That's all I'd have to say.
26:23It's a realistic level-headed game for the most part.
26:27About normal people living in a normal, old-fashioned town.
26:32It's not like it's sci-fi or fantasy, so it's not going to have a bunch of moments that stretch believability.
26:39There would be a point to me talking about the Harvest Moon events if there were a bunch of plot holes that I could expose.
26:45Not just in this game, but in 64 as well.
26:49The problem with this game compared to Back to Nature is that they made it more challenging, but in the wrong sort of way.
26:58The challenge it was supposed to add was give us more things to buy.
27:05And not in the blatant padding way that the TV shopping channel does it.
27:10You're still doing nothing but sleeping after the middle of fall.
27:14The problem is that you don't have to save up to buy any of the TV shopping stuff.
27:19Because you have all the money that you need by the fall.
27:23They should have had a third house expansion.
27:26And you had to keep making money until the spring so that you could afford it.
27:31When talking about this, I appreciate that I didn't have to keep playing the game so long.
27:37Because it made my review a lot faster to make.
27:40But obviously that's not the normal gameplay experience.
27:44I think you're supposed to have a Harvest Moon game still have stuff to do at least until you get married.
27:51And there's nothing to do for months before you get married.
27:56That's pretty weird compared to Harvest Moon 64.
28:00And for the sake of making this review, it was very convenient that I could automate farming.
28:07But that doesn't feel as much like a farming game if you're not doing any of the actual harvesting yourself.
28:14It's the sprites that are earning the money for you.
28:17That's pretty good for you.
28:18That's pretty good for you.
28:19That's pretty good for you.
