00:00IDW Sonic Issue 79
00:04It's nice that the story takes place in a new location that tries to be memorable looking.
00:09The text box says this takes place after the fall of Restoration HQ. No duh.
00:15That was insulting to our intelligence, because this is just right after the previous story ended.
00:22Cream goes after Whisper who asks her to join her even though she is anti-social and knows she doesn't have cheese to throw.
00:30Cream can still attack by using the spin jump, but she'd have to get close to the enemy.
00:36Wouldn't she tell her to stay away from her so she wouldn't be put in danger by the knife-wielding mimic?
00:42Cream says yuh-huh and I think it's just because she's a little girl and it makes her come off like an airhead.
00:48Which she wasn't in the games.
00:51In fact, she was a foil to Amy for her airheadness in Sonic Battle and Rush.
00:59So this makes it look like it doesn't bode well for else she'll be used in the story.
01:03She says cheese having a tommy ache is why she's here alone.
01:06That doesn't explain why she took the risk of coming here alone and why she doesn't bring Chocola instead.
01:12That would have excited people a little because it'd be the first time she only had him around.
01:17She should have said they both do.
01:19Whisper should have questioned this.
01:21This would be fine if she brought a crossbow because she learned to use one.
01:25She was already a specialist in long range combat from day one.
01:29So that shouldn't be a big deal.
01:31Whisper doesn't remember what the name of Cream's mom is even though it's memorable which makes a fool out of her.
01:37Typical.
01:39Why didn't she say your mother?
01:43Sega has to know she's her mother.
01:45The whole reason she was created was to be her mother.
01:47It had to be the writer taking the pits at Sega and briefly trying to make them look like they're so arbitrarily restricted for the sake of dominating another country's comic that they have to not call Vanilla Cream's mom.
01:59In the next panel, Cream calls her mommy no problem.
02:03So it's right to be in good faith enough to immediately assume that this wasn't because Sega banned calling Vanilla mom.
02:09She's never called her mommy before.
02:11That's British slang specifically.
02:13Kids calling their mom's mother is creepy from how weird and desperate to sound adult it is.
02:19It works for Azula because she's both.
02:22So anything's better than her calling her mother like in the games and previous issues.
02:27This sort of works as a compromise because people still think of this in a formal way because it's British.
02:33It's also the comic looking creative for once by making Cream come off as a British immigrant.
02:38I doubt they'll confirm that since that would take being creatively inspired.
02:43And maybe Sega of Japan would shoot it down for a non-Japan comic for no reason.
02:48Despite allowing a British accent for movie knuckles.
02:52That's always the weird thing about the hearsay about Sega saying no to the American comics.
02:58Cream also calls her silly.
03:00So I guess that's part of why Whisper assumes she's Mimic.
03:03It would have made more sense that she assumed this if she didn't believe her about the real name of Vanilla.
03:08Because she didn't want to admit she was wrong.
03:10Which is a common thing for people who get given alternative facts too.
03:14Come to think of it she could have intentionally gotten her name wrong to test Mimic.
03:19Which makes her look smart.
03:21Whisper says that Cream's supposed to have much better manners.
03:24And she doesn't say mommy.
03:26Heaven forbid they have even the slightest ounce of creativity and intrigue.
03:31Even in a way that doesn't affect the plot.
03:33And people wonder why they'd rather use OCs.
03:37Talk about entitled.
03:39Mimic says there's just way too many details to keep track of.
03:43Even though politeness is the most simple memorable one.
03:46So there's no way you could forget that one.
03:49And even if you cut I'm so sick of the constant use of the idiot ball in this comic.
03:53That's no wonder I don't get the benefit of doubt anymore.
03:56Because even when it does make sense.
03:58It's still continuing the pattern of only progressing the plot by character incompetence.
04:02When competence is actually engaging.
04:05If he was competent he would have said mom instead of mommy.
04:08Because it's more common.
04:10So it would be an understandable mistake.
04:12So he drops the act when he kind of kept going.
04:15And left in order to make her doubt her own sanity.
04:18And then snuck up on her from behind looking like someone else.
04:22I thought it was going to turn out she really was Cream to make Whisper look stupid.
04:26Why don't we see Whisper's reaction the instant Mimic drops his disguise?
04:31Why doesn't she punch him the instant he does so?
04:34She was so desperate to start fighting him to try to kill him after all.
04:38Oh okay.
04:40To be fair he only halfway gives it away and she's in public.
04:43So at any moment he could turn back into Cream and Framers having gone crazy.
04:47And she could have taken that hint.
04:50So then she's just interrupt him.
04:52Saying,
04:53I'm not interested in listening to your uncreative taunts.
04:56Why would I ever be expected to be interested in what Mimic's saying here?
05:00He's just doing a recap and stating the obvious.
05:03She does it too for no reason.
05:06I know what's going on.
05:08I know the writers just doing this to recap the backstory.
05:11Especially for any new readers.
05:13But there's usually not going to be any new readers.
05:16And I've heard the sales of the comic just kept plummeting.
05:19The ones who stopped buying would have spread the word about why.
05:23This is also for the sake of the old readers that's treating the audience like complete idiots.
05:28Or at the very least people who don't care about the comic.
05:32If they're going to forget about Whisper's backstory.
05:35Who would have forgotten their backstory would end up with the death of Whisper's friends.
05:41I think my main problem with Mimic's design.
05:44He would have looked better if instead of purple colored he was black colored.
05:48Because that'd go better with how scary his eyes look.
05:51Because it's the stereotypical color of darkness and evil.
05:55While purple is a royalty color.
05:57It's not menacing enough.
05:59It's just weird looking.
06:01I really hate that Whisper is even bothering to explain when she made new friends instead of leaving.
06:07Like she cares about what he thinks for no reason.
06:10I thought the next time we saw Mimic the story was immediately going to have her and Silver fight him.
06:15His dialogue is so boring.
06:18Why does he have to talk so much?
06:21Get on with it.
06:22He at least compliments her by saying that by being here alone.
06:25She's finally caught on that this is how you protect your friends from him.
06:29Then he reminds her that that very same thing didn't protect her past friends from him.
06:35Which contradicts himself.
06:37She's told she wasn't there for her friends.
06:39And she says a blatant lie that she was.
06:42And he says they should finish what they started.
06:44And surprisingly she agrees.
06:46Even though there's the possibility of him shapeshifting his cream to frame her still.
06:50This would only make sense if the plan was to instantly kill him.
06:54He says she lured him out by putting her Wisp on out of easy route.
06:58And I thought she just didn't have it with her.
07:02Which would have been another idiot ball.
07:04He wonders how she discharged such a dangerous weapon in a crowded spot.
07:09First off.
07:10Dangerous weapon is redundant.
07:12And second.
07:13It's not that crowded.
07:15And she could always use a Wisp that doesn't have its attack work as crowd control exclusively.
07:19So if that's what he meant by dangerous weapon.
07:23He's gotta be just saying that to intimidate her.
07:25Unless it's another moment of them being a complete idiot.
07:28But the point of this scene is he's doing a stereotypical menacing villain speech.
07:33So I'll humor it.
07:35She says she won't.
07:36And Silver grabs Mimic.
07:38For no reason, Whisper and the table get grabbed too.
07:42And Silver says a blatant falsehood.
07:45That it can only be so precise.
07:47Even though he grabbed precisely Sonic in 06 multiple times.
07:51Not just in the gameplay.
07:53But also in the cutscene after their first fight.
07:56It doesn't matter that 06's events erase itself from history.
08:00Because there's no reason that would change the abilities of the characters in it.
08:04Name a time that Silver was ever implied in a game after 06 to be imprecised.
08:09The comic acted like the games were canon to its past in the first two arcs.
08:15And again, it's not even good on its own merits.
08:18It's just infantilizing him a bit.
08:20So it doesn't hold up as a creative difference.
08:23Speaking of doesn't hold up.
08:25There's no way Silver wouldn't instantly snap Mimic's neck here.
08:28Considering their plan was to kill him.
08:30And he wanted to kill Sonic in his first appearance.
08:34Sure, with the logic of shapeshifting.
08:36You should be able to heal the snapped neck by changing how his body is again.
08:40But Silver would still try.
08:42And at least that's always a bigger threat than you thought.
08:45Because he can heal himself from any injury.
08:48And they would be using a shapeshifter in a new way in the Sonic series.
08:52To get the benefit of the doubt for no logical reason.
08:55I'm gonna steelman this by assuming that Silver Nose Mimic would be able to shapeshift to heal his snapped neck.
09:01Or snapped any other body part.
09:03But then he should be throwing him against the wall that's right there repeatedly.
09:08Cause then he'd knock him out eventually.
09:11The story's already ruined so the minute Silver grabbed him just to give him the chance to insult Whisper.
09:17When he shouldn't even be able to move his mouth.
09:20It's this kind of writing that makes me think that Silver should have been banned from IDW in the first place.
09:26Because unlike in Preboot Archie, he's not written as powerful as he should be.
09:31The Whisperman gets sent over to Whisper.
09:33And she gets the lampshade that Mimic's an idiot who thinks he can do everything on his own.
09:37He naturally points out that he's the only one he can count on.
09:41Why was Mimic able to not hold still when every time Silver grabs something, it's not allowed to move of its own accord to such an extent?
09:50This kind of garbage makes me wish that they invented a new character with Tal Kinesis.
09:55And explained that Tal Kinesis was permanently inferior and used him instead.
10:00Because this isn't Silver.
10:02And going by the logic that Sega restricts the use of the game characters because they're so attached to them.
10:08And that's why there's mandates.
10:10While Sega doesn't care about Silver one bit if this kind of writing didn't piss them off enough to do something about it.
10:15When making Shadow talkative pisses them off.
10:19Because anyone who actually cares about proper characterization would be noticing this nonsense.
10:24And since you have to have this writing so that Mimic has any chance of still acting threatening for the sake of an epic fight.
10:32Don't have Silver in the scene then!
10:34What, you think Whisper can't handle Mimic alone?
10:37She's not even really alone without Silver because Tangle tells her over a wireless phone call where he's heading for.
10:44Since when was Mimic able to fly with the yellow blur surrounding him?
10:48I can accept that he's always been able to do this and just didn't feel the need to yet because he's arrogant.
10:54Because it makes just as much sense as all of the other blatantly magical powers the Sonic characters had.
10:59But new powers as the plot demands is a bad writing trope.
11:04He should have shown this ability earlier.
11:07And not in a way that would get him out of trouble.
11:10I say it's an ability of his because he's still able to fly after he gets out of Silver's range.
11:15Mimic shapeshifts him that was for nothing because Tangle spotted him and told Whisper what he turned into anyways.
11:22So he needed this power to even have an edge.
11:25That's how pathetic he is.
11:26This is the perfect time for Whisper to lampshade.
11:29Mimic would be so much more threatening if he just turned into a giant monster or a bunch of tear gas.
11:34And then it could explain that he arbitrarily can't according to a writer who probably came up with the idea on the spot after getting cornered on social media about it and had to try to make the comic look better.
11:46That only begs the question of why not just make a new shapeshifter who can turn into cool things.
11:51It's not menacing to turn himself into a pathetic civilian.
11:55And I guess the reason he made his eyes turn back to normal was to give her one last menacing looking thing to see.
12:01His main weapon is a knife. And since we know he'll never be allowed to hit her with it, he can't do anything.
12:07Just give him a blunt weapon instead. What were you thinking?
12:12Whisper gets to use the hoverwisp against him to send him up for Silver to grab him.
12:17As I'm wondering what Diabolus Ex Machina will cause him to get saved from him.
12:21And him using the just now revealed flying power to ram into him even though he's supposed to be unable to move, it's the closest we got so far.
12:29Silver could've just instantly slammed him into something instead of wasting time saying there and pausing before saying something else.
12:37Granted, when he holds Sonic still in 06, he does waste time talking to him first before throwing him away.
12:44But don't they owe the game characters enough respect to betray them more respectfully than the game?
12:49Tango grabs him to stop him from flying away despite the pathetic job she did last time, which is supposed to hold him still.
12:57Whisper wonders if Silver is okay and for no reason the colorist has some awful looking white and red monochrome panels ruin the panels of Tango hitting Mimic.
13:07Because it doesn't look like how you'd expect as if the flashes of light censoring the impact weren't bad enough.
13:14This immediately gave me flashbacks to when Sonic punched Robotnik in issue 50.
13:20Why do they keep using flashes of light?
13:23It's an action series.
13:24So why would it be acquired by Sega?
13:26And it can't be anyone else because Sega should've said no to them if they care about how the comic is.
13:32Logically, why would they let the comic get away with so much if they're supposedly the same people who put arbitrary restrictions on it because they care how it is?
13:40Why would an artist drawing an action series think this is supposed to be a good idea and willingly do so?
13:46Mimic is smacked into a wall finally with the color looking proper.
13:50But I still should've seen it from the side so I could see the impact.
13:54She wastes time talking to him instead of hitting him while doing that.
13:58He turns into a ridiculous looking thing the size of Vector.
14:02And Tango backs away instead of punching him for no reason after all the other things she didn't back away from.
14:09Which at least gives Silver the chance to save her.
14:12Why don't they turn into a dragon the size of Vector?
14:16Considering how supposedly imprecises how Kinesis is.
14:19How did this not also result in him holding Mimic?
14:23Why do we see a blue light censoring the impact of the Hammer Wisp against him?
14:28Why do we see a flash of light in monochrome white and red art censoring the impact when she hits him?
14:34At first I thought the comic was gonna tell me he was sent falling.
14:38But instead it just fell a little bit and an unnecessary amount of panels get used up on him being threatened with a Wisp on instead of instantly shooting him for no reason.
14:48Tango sees a big explosion and you'd think Whisper would've gotten caught in it.
14:52If she did then the logic for surviving would be that she had rings.
14:56While Mimic might not have had any left because he got attacked so much.
15:00But he still could've fallen into one depending on how lazy the writers will feel later on.
15:05Just because Tango tells Silver to drop her.
15:08He does so when he could've flown over to Whisper to catch her.
15:11Tango would be a better choice because she'd go down with Whisper instead of doing a sudden stop when she catches her which would hurt her.
15:19It's supposedly telekinesis and precise that him grabbing the falling ronks would also grab Whisper.
15:26This is why you shouldn't even humor this.
15:29That it doesn't stay consistent like it logically would.
15:32So it's only used to weaken him when the plot demands it.
15:36Because he's driving the writers into a corner because of how overpowered he is.
15:41Why does she call the Hover Wisp Green Hover and Sweetie instead of Green?
15:46Why does Tango have to take all the time of telling the Wisps to do its job making them pick up speed as they keep falling instead of instantly doing so?
15:55Why doesn't it instantly do so?
15:57She slows down the fall with it and Whisper opens her eyes and only feels like saying Mimic's name.
16:02But she doesn't look burnt so it's not from the explosion burning her.
16:06So she's got no reason to be dazed and turn into a damsel in distress just to give Tango a cool moment.
16:12It's implied that Mimic fell into the water.
16:15But since he used his new flight ability, rather than this being a lame Disney death,
16:20he'd logically be able to just turn it around and move in the water to get away.
16:24Unless he passed out.
16:26Tango stupidly asks if she's hurt even though the only reason she would have been dazed was that she was hurt.
16:33There's light drawn on Tango which is purely metaphorical to represent how happy Whisper is, as if it's an anime.
16:40Well and the thing that put me off anime was how condescending and unrealistic it was that it kept trying too hard to visually represent emotions.
16:48Again, Sonic the Hedgehog was primarily made to appeal to Americans, so there's no excuse for doing this.
16:54Especially since in Japan itself, they had a W comic stomped being sent there after the metal virus arc.
17:01She hogs her Wisp saying it's done and calling them by other names.
17:05And Tango smiles and says I wonder why she's not annoyed with Whisperer for killing Mimic.
17:10Since she lectured her not to do that earlier.
17:13And she has a Wisp on that can cause explosions.
17:16She thanks Silver as states the obvious, and she says she can't believe Mimic would blow up the core instead of surrender.
17:23Blow up the core?
17:25What core?
17:26Since when was there something that someone could do?
17:29I thought the whole point was Whisperer would get to kill him.
17:32So I assumed she had intentionally fired the fire Wisp to cause the explosion.
17:37To be in good faith, I have to assume that's the case, and Tango's just giving Whisperer the benefit of the doubt.
17:42Too bad Whisperer isn't given a thaw bubble to say, yeah right.
17:46What core?
17:47I thought there was nothing but a Wisp in there.
17:50So wouldn't that mean he blew up the Wisp?
17:53Wouldn't a Burst Wisp not be able to die from going burst?
17:57Whisperer gets told they can go home, and wonders what home is.
18:01Well, good thing the pacing was fast enough to keep room in the story for some more plot than that,
18:06because we all wanted to see what Sonic was gonna do next.
18:10So it would be only common sense to have half of the story devoted to him.
18:15Not have the majority of the issue be devoted to these people who don't have deep enough characters anyways.
18:22Why are Sonic and the Chaotix walking through Rainstorm Forest instead of going at Sonic speed?
18:28When heroes made it clear that if Espio runs through a loop with them behind him,
18:32they'll magically get some of his speed to be able to keep up.
18:35And Knuckles Chaotix, all of them were fast.
18:39And obviously if they had low stamina, they wouldn't have been able to finish Knuckles Chaotix in Sonic Heroes.
18:45Vector says they couldn't have found this place without Clutch giving them the location,
18:49and Sonic only rubbed salt in the wound by saying,
18:53says some master detective, with a nasty smirk, which was uncalled for.
18:57Sonic was never rude to Vector like this in the games.
18:59It's not even like the best detective ever could have just psychically known where to go in this case.
19:05So that suggests the writer jumping at an excuse to insult what's easily one of the least bad characters in the franchise.
19:13Which has to be just because he has a goofy voice.
19:15The story ends there, so it hardly progressed things at all.
19:19I'm bored enough to talk about the art right now, and it deserves it for being overrated all the time.
19:25Why do the characters look washed out?
19:28As if it wasn't bad enough that Sonic doesn't look dark blue enough.
19:32Which is never acceptable because dark blue is actually cool looking, while lighter blue isn't,
19:37and it disrespects the intentions of Sonic's creators.
19:41He was made dark blue to match the Sega logo in contrast from the sky.
19:45I hate that about every story, so while I seem hard in the comic,
19:49I'm always being generous with it by holding back on complaining about this in every issue.
19:54I only brought this up again because the rest of the characters were a little washed out,
19:58so I had to talk about how Sonic looked, because he demonstrates that better than Espio did.
20:02This is why I don't tend to talk about the art, aside from the fact that it's just stating the obvious
20:07and saying some subjective opinions.
20:10I'd have to ignore the elephant in the room to do so,
20:13which would leave the art critique incomplete.
20:16And writing critique is more objective than art critique.
20:20Sometimes the expressions are too exaggerated, that's all I haven't said.
20:24This story by Ian Flynn was about whispering Silver in an exciting fight with Mimic,
20:29which logically would have taken just a few seconds,
20:31where all that happened is Silver smacking him into a wall.
20:34So I wrote himself into a corner having Silver here,
20:37and had to write him insultingly out of character by having so that Mimic can still move a lot,
20:42in a telekinesis field.
20:44And he was in such a corner that he also had to write Mimic as not like you'd expect.
20:49All of a sudden Mimic can fly, regardless of being in a telekinesis field.
20:53If you have to resort to new powers as the plot demands, just don't have Silver here.
20:58But that would have made a boring fight to watch, and she needed to resort to his help.
21:03Heaven forbid she called Blaze for help and have Tails give him intel from above instead.
21:08It just wouldn't have been impressive to come up with because he did that already.
21:12This was such a frustrating story, because every time someone got the hit Mimic,
21:16the art ruins it by censoring it with monochrome colors and flashes of light for no reason.
21:22How could someone have such low standards as to think this was fine, when this isn't what you wanted to see?
21:29It's not like whenever Sonic jumped into the badniks, it got censored by a flash of light.
21:34And some pretty dark stuff happens in this comic, so why would it be literal censorship from a censorship authority?
21:40It was so simple to give us a satisfying fight to watch, so how could they screw it up?
21:47Speaking of that, Mimic uses this flight just before it disappears into a river,
21:52which only leaves it open that it could still show up again.
21:55Which would mean the whole fight was pointless, so I can't even celebrate this issue for finally getting rid of it.
