00:00IDW Sonic Issue 80
00:02By the way, I've put all of my videos on Dailymotion too, so it doesn't matter if some are blocked.
00:09Don't let the copyright system win by keeping you from seeing them.
00:12Sonic and the Chaotix get faced with some flying robots in the forest they were in earlier.
00:18Which has to be in a nearly constant or permanent state of rainstorm because of magic,
00:23or else why would they give such an uncreative name as Rainstorm Forest?
00:27Every forest has rain after all.
00:31It's good that Sonic's smiling in excitement, but it's blatant padding that this wastes the entire page.
00:38I like that he has to run up the slanted fist of one of the robots to get to the top and attack it.
00:44Even if it's not original because it just rips off Sonic Rush,
00:49the robot runs away inexplicably when all of the robots in the world are programmed to try to fight to the death.
00:55Vector plans to ambush the robot by telling Espyo to go invisible,
01:01which takes advantage of him being the leader.
01:03But then the robot tries to ambush Charmy anyways, and Shadow saves him.
01:09So Vector and Espyo never got to do anything cool,
01:12and Vector just wasted his time and ours.
01:15The story also never gets the chance to point out that Espyo shouldn't need to be told to go invisible.
01:23He would just do it.
01:25I hate that the comic keeps using Shadow when the writers know nobody likes how he's written in it
01:30because they somehow think just seeing him will still make people love this story
01:35because he reminds us of Shadow from the games.
01:37The writer, for some reason, makes a fool out of Espyo by having him say,
01:41Look out behind you too late.
01:44At least Sonic was nice enough to bother complimenting Shadow on its dramatic entrance,
01:49even though he wouldn't care.
01:51I like that Rouge looks a little different than before because she's wearing a hat.
01:56It's a little creativity,
01:57and it makes sense that someone who can fly would want to shield her eyes from the rain
02:01by having something hang over them a little.
02:03And the color of it goes well with the rest of her color scheme.
02:07She greets them, and there's boring talking.
02:10She says that certain parties hired her to look for anything interesting to investigate Clutch's company.
02:16It's unengaging that we're never told who hired her.
02:20And it'd be better if she didn't say parties in plural
02:23so we could better assume that she's hired by gun.
02:26I'm sure the writers are always writing her with the idea that she's still working for gun,
02:30and just not having her say-so because Sega has this out-of-touch insistence on getting rid of this concept,
02:37despite the fact that the fans like it,
02:39and they'd make more money if they didn't ignore what most of the fans wanted.
02:44Then the writer insists on having Charmy humiliate Vector by telling Rouge the Chaotix got kidnapped.
02:50You know it keeps ruining my immersion when I keep having to say,
02:55The Writer.
02:57Charmy somehow gets confused by Vector calling him out and says that he did good,
03:02so somehow it wasn't that he was trying to embarrass him on purpose.
03:06He just told her this for no reason.
03:09It's not that he's trying to write him as doing this because it's in character for him in the games
03:14to do something that'd annoy Vector knowingly without caring,
03:17since he flew into Vector once.
03:20This is just not like him.
03:22I never thought he'd see Shadow care enough to correct someone on his grammar.
03:27Sonic points out that Charmy was still correct,
03:29even though he wasn't intending to use the word good in that way.
03:33So it's cathartic that Shadow glares at him for it.
03:37Shadow says he's just here because he doesn't like Clutch.
03:40Can the story get a move on?
03:42The writers don't need to have him say anything.
03:45They can just have him have laryngitis every time and completely get around to make him annoying.
03:51It's like they want him to annoy us.
03:54And that would make sense if it's because it makes Sega look bad and thus them look good.
04:00Finally, Sonic asks why Omega isn't here and gets told it's hard to gather intel from a smolding crater.
04:07The story blatantly wastes my time again with Vector talking too much.
04:11It's so insulting how patted out the plot is, like he thinks you won't notice.
04:17Shadow hears something and tells them to be quiet.
04:20And eventually they have to deal with another robot.
04:24Who cares?
04:25We all know they're never going to get hurt, and we don't especially hate what they're fighting.
04:30They don't even have charming and really interesting designs.
04:36I don't think I've ever seen a robot that looked like that before.
04:39But why aren't they shaped like animals or insects?
04:42That was part of Sonic's identity, you remember?
04:45Vector tells Espio to not let Rouge keep all of the intel to herself.
04:49He goes over to clean sweep, and Rouge keeps him from being spotted by a camera, which would have been anyway if he was invisible.
04:57Even Pandora's remember to have him go invisible in every fight.
05:02Destroying the cameras by throwing stuff at them still gives away that the base is being infiltrated.
05:08That should still be cause for concern.
05:11Rouge takes something off her back and throws something heart-shaped, and it explodes.
05:15At least it seemed new, but only because of the shape of the bomb.
05:21And yeah, she's definitely being written as if she's still working for Gunn, and she's most likely working for some substitute for Gunn.
05:30Because why would she have bombs otherwise?
05:33She can't invent them, and they look custom-made.
05:38This story's so derivative.
05:40The forest just reminds me of all those other forests from the games.
05:45Espio called her out on calling an explosion a precision touch.
05:50Espio clears his throat to make sure she lets him also download info.
05:55All Charmy has to do is climb inside of a robot and grab some of the wires, and somehow that lets him control its limbs.
06:02I thought it had a CPU determining how it moved, like every robot.
06:08This would have only made sense for Tails to do.
06:11Of course, I appreciate that he's doing something he never did before in the franchise.
06:15I'm just confused.
06:18Charmy has no idea which wire hole is supposed to have a specific effect when electricity goes in it.
06:24To be fair, people get lucky in real life.
06:29There's more padding, including worthless dialogue.
06:33Rouge finds it flattering that she's called tricky and deviance.
06:36It looks like it's portraying her as a card-carrying villain instead of in-character,
06:41but those words do mean smart as well as evil, and she is supposed to be confident.
06:47She's a jewel thief in the games, too, so it always made sense to finally take more advantage of the fact that she's not supposed to be entirely a hero.
06:56While the games mostly seem gutless by just portraying her as a good gun.
07:00She wants the defense systems off, and Espyo karate chops the console, which I can see as him imitating when Shadow did that in his own game.
07:11It's more something I'd expect Charmy to trust to work than him, though.
07:16The defenses do go offline, even though Espyo doesn't have super strength,
07:20so we can't damage a console enough to keep it from constantly sending out signals to make robots move.
07:26Which has to be how it's working, because if they moved independently like badniks are supposed to, this wouldn't work.
07:35You'd think it'd be Rouge kicking it that would be able to cause this.
07:39She's supposed to have a strong kick.
07:42She should have done this.
07:45Shadow tells Rouge good work, and Sonic makes a joke to try to lighten the mood.
07:51Espyo brags as if what he did was entirely his idea first.
07:55Like, he's supposed to be seen as a goofball.
07:59He hasn't acted like that in the games.
08:01His ninja aesthetic isn't something we'd expect him to think that stolen Balor would be something to be proud of.
08:08So this is a downgrade that's more like Sonic X Espyo.
08:12To be fair though, the chaotics have been used in so few ways in the games that we hardly know anything about them.
08:18With some characters, the only way to do anything creative and thus interesting with them is to have them not act how they did in the source material.
08:27Rouge tells him,
08:28Let's go meet up with the others before they think we've been alone together too long.
08:32And he nervously asks what they would think, when if he didn't know, then he wouldn't be nervous.
08:37I like that for once they're taking advantage of the aesthetic she's had that would make you assume she's a flirt who wants male attention by having to make a joke like this.
08:46And she's always been jokey, so it especially fits.
08:50It does make me sad by reminding me that neither of them would get the pleasure of dating anyone anyways because Sega won't mind its own business anymore and let the fans have what they want.
09:00These two haven't acted like they were compatible in this issue anyways, but it's still pointed to what they have in common as stealth intel gatherers.
09:10There's more boring talking.
09:13And Shadow vents by saying,
09:14Vector used an oxymoron.
09:17Again, this doesn't feel accurate to Shadow, and more like an exaggerated flanderization of his snob attitude in the games,
09:25because it only related to what he had over other people for being the ultimate life form.
09:29And it was rare, but at least I understand why it'd be interpreted like this.
09:35Shadow takes Rouge's USB drive and plans to track down each clean sweep base and make it harmless.
09:43The chaotic sense Sonic offered to tag along with him, and should have expected that he'd refuse and leave.
09:49He warps away without saying Chaos Control first and using an emerald.
09:52So good, the comic's now back to its original logic from the final fight with him in SA2,
09:58where he can warp a head in a flash of light without an emerald.
10:02Where he and Sonic said Chaos Control before they warped every time in that game.
10:07It's contradicting his bullshit lie that he needs an emerald for this.
10:12Rouge was smart enough to make a backup of the intel for himself, and complained about Shadow.
10:18Shadow would be worse to read about if none of the characters complained about him.
10:23Vector thanks Sonic for his help and says sorry for getting on his case earlier.
10:28At least that was nice of him.
10:30Sonic jokes around again.
10:32I don't think he's been so consistently jokey since Lost Worlds when it comes to the games.
10:38It's like he's one note here.
10:40So to be consistent, you'd have to feel the same way about it in both cases.
10:46It's trying to be entertaining with his dialogue, and the fact that he's smiling to try to lighten the mood.
10:51In a vacuum, that's great, but it's bad to have it be his only personality.
10:57Why does Rouge even ask if Vector wants her help when she knows he can't afford it?
11:03She calls Sonic Blue in a reference to Sonic Battle when she did that.
11:08And Sonic wants some insight into why Tails lost the emerald he naturally gave him for being his friend.
11:13Why didn't Tails have a security system to protect the emerald?
11:19Rouge says that she's innocent and the emerald she stole from the museum also got stolen from her.
11:25It better be explained how the hell that happened.
11:27I'm pretty sure Rouge's address wouldn't be public knowledge, because that would suck.
11:33There's way too much dialogue in this page.
11:35I notice they've got the same joking attitude with the same smirk.
11:40With Sonic not being mad at her despite accusing her of stealing from him.
11:44There's so much like each other sometimes.
11:47They're actually compatible with each other.
11:50It's too bad they won't date.
11:52It's no wonder I like Rouge so much in this comic.
11:55She's got the charm that Sonic's intended to have,
11:57but her negative quality doesn't cancel it out,
12:00because the comics are actually self-aware of the fact that she's kind of evil,
12:03while the only people who call out Sonic are vilified and easily dismissed.
12:09Sonic wouldn't be so annoying if he was written as a thief too,
12:12and got constantly called out and not trusted.
12:15And he was a thief in ALSDH in Sonic Underground, so there's tons of precedent.
12:19And I know this doesn't count, but from Eggman's perspective,
12:22he stole from him when he freed animals from badniks,
12:25because he was robbing him of the batteries meant to power them.
12:29Rouge reassures him,
12:30and even though she makes it clear that she won't return the emerald to the museum,
12:35Sonic still smiles at her.
12:38He cared enough to try to lecture her about her emerald theft,
12:41but not enough to genuinely have a problem with the idea that she won't return it.
12:45He really is only deluding himself that he minds that she stole an emerald.
12:50It'd be more relatable if he didn't lack in self-awareness.
12:53He shouldn't be opposed to it anyway,
12:55because it's better that someone associated with him as a chaos symbol than someone he doesn't know,
13:00because then how is he supposed to go super later?
13:03The story ends with the heroes being spied on.
13:06I say heroes, but I don't feel like they even really accomplished anything.
13:10They still ended the story thinking that the robots were independently operating.
13:15The fans of this comic are like,
13:16Wow, this comic is great because it's like the games.
13:20If they were rescuing animals from the robots they were destroying,
13:23I would have cared more that they fought them a little,
13:26because at least they would have accomplished something.
13:29And as I expected,
13:30the villain has a whole bunch of the emeralds,
13:32and we haven't found out how he got them.
13:35It'd be impressive if we did find that out.
13:38This issue by Ian Flynn was a boring, uncreative one,
13:42where all that happens is most of the Chaotix and Sonic fight robots
13:46that do nothing new and look boring while they're doing nothing new.
13:50And S.B.O. and Rouge just have to destroy some cameras and get intel
13:54that doesn't even have them be properly informed.
13:57So the whole trip here was pointless for them.
14:01The robots would just get rebuilt.
14:03Only Shadow benefited from it because he found out where other bases were
14:08so he could destroy them.
14:10Off screen, probably.
14:12You know it's bad when the only thing really new and good about the story
14:15is that the bomb Rouge threw was shaped like a heart this time.
14:19I loved how Rouge and Sonic interacted.
14:22Why can't Rouge be used a lot more often?
14:26I guess it was new that the Chaotix and Sonic were in a forest that was raining,
14:30but they didn't really take advantage of the setting anyways.
14:35The robot could have hidden from Sonic behind a building
14:37and it could have been in a city for all the difference it made.
14:41It's not like they had to run away from grizzly bears.
14:44formatting, but also when we went to Orleans in the forest.
14:50And all that stuff like that kind of stuff,
14:52there's still always going,
14:53but push a little thing out of the way there is that C.V.O.
14:55It doesn't have to rely on a forest that might
14:57want someone to get in a forest,
15:00but he said mum's guessw değer.
15:02And now there's not myself so I worry somewhat
15:05about using the Fuq shakeokaw for lye,
15:07so we can do the that kind of control advantage of
15:09or target like a coat,
15:10because I think that's the game here.
15:12Uh,
