00:00The Sonic 2 movie was written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller, and so was the screenplay, with the additional credit of John Whittington.
00:08Aside from the beginning scene, it only got good when Tails showed up.
00:12I never expected it as much as the first one's story was, because its plot never sounded original when anyone described it,
00:19because it introduces Knuckles the same way it always does, because he gets tricked into fighting Sonic by Eggman.
00:27But it is original that Sonic and Tails look for a magic compass that can raise up an underwater island with the Master Emeralds in his labyrinth.
00:35The plot wasn't forced this time.
00:38Knuckles had no reason to let Eggman tag along with him when he talks in an obviously evil way to the point of saying diabolically evil,
00:47so he's got no reason to trust him.
00:50But Eggman could've just followed him from high up in the Eggmobile and we'd have the same plot.
00:55I don't like most of the characters in this story.
00:58Sonic's a lame and immature brat who only gets tolerable because of Tails.
01:04Knuckles caused them to lack the confidence that was one of Sonic's signature traits.
01:10Tom and Maddie are somehow overprotective of him and against them fighting criminals.
01:15But they're fine after they find out the wedding was a trap.
01:18Knuckles talks formally the whole time and he's still impossibly stupid and he strangles Sonic.
01:25How am I supposed to like him in this movie after that?
01:29So if he's okay with that, then it makes it for us that he let Eggman tag along with him just to be polite.
01:36He had no good reason to think he'd need Eggman's help getting to the Emerald because Eggman never told him how he'd help him with that.
01:45His main fight with Sonic only had him look cool because the writer forced Sonic to forget how fast he was so he wasn't really fighting Sonic.
01:54If Sonic had remembered he could move so fast that everything goes into slow motion around him, which he did at the start of the movie so there's no excuse,
02:03Knuckles wouldn't have gone to hurt him more than once.
02:06The writers then wrote themselves into a corner by having to strangle Sonic so Tails could get to save him.
02:13Because they had to write the rest of the story ignoring the fact that Knuckles got hit by a car.
02:19At least the way he attacked Sonic in the fight itself felt original.
02:23It's also original that Knuckles spent his whole life looking for a Master Emerald he never touched, so he meets Sonic at his house,
02:30which matters because it's why Tails was able to save Sonic from him by driving into him.
02:36But the different scenery didn't get taken advantage of by the plot otherwise, so it doesn't even matter.
02:42And because Angel Island is cool because it can fly, it's lame that it's not in the movie for no reason.
02:48The Emerald the Master Emerald was on could've just been said to have started floating as soon as the compass rose it up.
02:55So you can't excuse this by saying it'd be over budget for the medium of a live-action movie made as cheap as it can possibly get away with for maximum profit.
03:03The Emerald being in a cave under ocean level that gets flooded by the water from above when the cave gets damaged by its own traps is why Sonic got to earn Knuckles' respect the way he did.
03:15Which was only good because it had never been done before.
03:18Because Underground did the same basic concept of him earning his trust.
03:23But that could've still happened with Angel Island.
03:26The cave could've been in the island's underground tunnels with an aquifer above the Emerald.
03:32Tails was the star of the show.
03:34The way they used them was amazing.
03:37They gave him a huge supply of gadgets, and each one did a different thing,
03:41which takes more effort from the writers than just having the Miles electric tablet.
03:46Or just having his bombs.
03:48This is how Tails would realistically be.
03:51He sticks with Sonic for most of the adventure.
03:54He hasn't done that in the game since Unleashed.
03:57He admired Sonic like a fanboy the whole time to the point where he's sucking up to him.
04:02He's usually optimistic.
04:04It's like they went down a checklist of ideal Tails characterization.
04:09So they got his personality unusually great.
04:12It's like they knew what the ideal Tails for me was.
04:16Even if he's still mostly just spouting exposition when he talks again.
04:20So I didn't feel like I got enough of him by the end.
04:23He wouldn't have had anything to say when he was out for the count anyways because there was no exposition to give.
04:29He would've just stated the obvious.
04:31It gave Maddy the chance to look cool using his gadgets.
04:35For once a human did all the work getting Sonic free of a place.
04:40So I guess it was just barely worth it.
04:43It comes off like they did their research on what most of the fans want Tails to be like and think of him as.
04:49They did that for Knuckles too but missed the forest for the trees.
04:54They made him talk formally and be serious because he was serious and had dignity in Adventure 2.
04:59But he didn't have any dignity in the moments where they just made him an idiot anyways with almost Boom Knuckles literal mindedness.
05:06Nobody was saying they wanted Knuckles to talk like a formal warrior adult the whole story.
05:12He didn't do that in the Adventure games.
05:15I'm just thankful he isn't like how he was in the recent games.
05:20He didn't have to be told not to punch the ruins.
05:23But they made him too harsh in this one.
05:26I already know he's cool you don't have to try so hard.
05:29I suppose I didn't dislike the story after all.
05:33But because I hate how Sonic is in it.
05:36I would still rather hear a negative perspective on it than the mindlessly positive ones that every so-called review gives it.
05:43Just because it didn't go with the first ugly Sonic design.
05:46When people would've still been mad if the one they actually went with was the first one they saw.
05:52I don't find most of the story frustrating or especially boring.
05:57Which is required for me to think it's bad.
06:01Like, I know it's a novel.
06:04But Sonic the Hedgehog in Castle Robotnik was really boring.
06:08This isn't.
06:09And the plot isn't uninspired and derivative.
06:13I still remember it as uncreated the first second I think back to it.
06:17Because Knuckles has been tricked into fighting Sonic a million times.
06:21So it's bad when the first things I think about when it comes to this story are Knuckles strangling Sonic and Super Sonic's unimaginative fight.
06:30That's not creative enough then.
06:32But it's not it's fault it came out after those things were already done to death.
06:36It would've looked like a much better story if it came out a lot earlier.
06:40It's more interesting to see this story than see Sonic go through all the zones of Sonic 3 having the same experiences in the game.
06:47Which would just be undoing the same few things over and over with almost nothing new.
06:52It is a shame though that they don't have as much variety in places they visited as Sonic 3 does.
06:59But there's a lot more to a story than just that.
07:03A very quick montage of all the zones could achieve the same thing.
07:08Sonic already beat a giant mecca of Eggman to Super Sonic and Sonic X.
07:13I'm pretty sure he did the same thing there.
07:16So it's no wonder I didn't really care about it.
07:19But the story only sucks in the filler between the first scene and Eggman orchestrating his escape from the mushroom planet.
07:26Sonic having to escape from a net from gun was done in Archie.
07:31And if he had been shocked by it then it wouldn't have been forced that he got arrested because he didn't just spin dash to get out of the net and knock his enemies down.
07:39And I'm getting captured didn't have to be in the film.
07:42It was just there to pad out the run time.
07:45But the scene that resulted was worth it.
07:47I'm glad the novelization I read didn't have the stupid extremely padded out wedding scene that people talked about.
07:55He was at the wedding but all it was was he asked Rachel for the ring and threw Sonic's ring to get him there.
08:03And then they immediately got captured by gun.
