00:00On a mountain in the southern part of Galilee, the disciples were listening to the teachings
00:20of their Master. This was the place where Jesus gave the Sermon on the Mount, the place where
00:26he taught them how to pray. Pray then like this. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy
00:38name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day
00:51our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And forgive us our
01:00debts as we forgive our debtors. How many times did Jesus teach this to his followers?
01:08But by the time the Master was ending his first ministry in Galilee, there were some in the
01:14land of Israel who were already fearful and resentful of his growing popularity with the
01:19people. These were the Pharisees, the religious leaders of the land. And whenever or wherever
01:27Pharisees met, Jesus was usually one of the main subjects of their discussions.
01:32I must admit that this Jesus puzzles me. Frankly, I don't understand him.
01:37Why should we even try to understand him? It's clear that he means no good to us.
01:41He has accused us of being self-righteous hypocrites. He says that we are wicked, corrupt, and adulterous.
01:48That I know. But he also does good deeds for many. And he seems to have great powers.
01:54He has power over the people that follow him, the tax collectors, fishermen, and the like.
01:59Yes, and their number is increasing. He and the crowds that follow him may weaken the power
02:05of the rulers of Israel. Do you really think so?
02:08And not only us, but the Sadducees, our scribes, elders, and all the leaders of Israel.
02:13But should we condemn him before we have heard him ourselves?
02:18I have heard him, and he accuses us.
02:21He cannot accuse me. I keep the law faithfully.
02:27The things they say about this man.
02:31I should like to know more about him.
02:33I should like to meet him personally.
02:35I think I will invite him to my house.
02:39And then we can see for ourselves.
02:41But would you associate with him?
02:43Why, they would say he, you as bad as he is.
02:46Have no fear.
02:48No one will know of this.
02:50I will not ask others to come.
02:52Only Jesus.
02:54But I do feel that if there is good in the man, we should know of it.
02:57And if he means evil, so bear with me, my friends, and dine with me when I invite this carpenter
03:06from Nazareth to my house.
03:09And so Simon the Pharisee invited Jesus to eat with him.
03:14And now, as they enjoyed the meal, they asked questions of the prophet of Galilee.
03:19And they were amazed by his answers.
03:21In the city, there was a woman who had learned that Jesus was sitting at the table of the
03:26rich Pharisee.
03:28And now she had come to find him.
03:38This woman had led a wicked life.
03:40And everyone knew of her sins.
03:42She was bitterly aware of her own sinfulness.
03:45But she had heard Jesus.
03:47And she knew that she had found one to whom she could come.
03:51Someone whose compassion and tender love would wash away her sins and make her clean.
04:04Disregarding the others in the room, the woman hastened to Jesus that she might show
04:09her respect and love.
04:12The three Pharisees were displeased that this woman should enter the house in this manner.
04:16For they recognized her and knew her to be a sinful woman.
04:19And now, when Simon the Pharisee, who had invited him, saw this, he spoke within himself,
04:25saying, if this man were a prophet, he would have known what sort of woman this is who is
04:31touching him.
04:31For she is a sinner.
04:34Simon, I have something to say to you.
04:37What is it, teacher?
04:39A certain creditor had two debtors.
04:41And one of them owed him five hundred denarii, the other fifty.
04:45And when they could not pay, he forgave them both.
04:50Which of them will love him more?
04:52The one, I suppose, to whom he forgave more?
04:56You have judged rightly.
05:00Do you see this woman?
05:03I entered your house.
05:05You gave me no water for my feet.
05:08But she has washed my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.
05:12You gave me no kiss.
05:18But she has not ceased to kiss my feet.
05:22My head with oil you did not anoint.
05:25But she has anointed my feet with ointment.
05:29Therefore, I say to you,
05:32her sins, which are many,
05:34are forgiven, for she loved much.
05:36He who is forgiven little,
05:43loves little.
05:49Your sins are forgiven.
05:54Who is this who even forgives sins?
05:58Your faith has saved you.
06:01Go in peace.
06:06Your sins are forgiven.
06:14Your faith has saved you.
06:17Go in peace.
06:31Sometime later,
06:33Jesus was with his twelve disciples in Capernaum.
06:36When he taught them the same lesson again.
06:40And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.
06:43If your brother sins against you,
06:46go and tell him his fault between you and him alone.
06:50If he listens to you, you have gained your brother.
06:53But if he does not listen,
06:56take one or two others along with you.
06:57that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses.
07:03If he refuses to listen to them,
07:05tell it to the church.
07:07And if he refuses to listen even to the church,
07:11let him be to you as a heathen and a publican.
07:13Truly, I say to you,
07:17whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven,
07:20and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
07:24Again, I say to you,
07:29if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask,
07:34it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.
07:36For where two or three are gathered in my name,
07:41there am I in the midst of them.
07:44Lord,
07:45how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him?
07:49As many as seven times?
07:52I do not say to you seven times,
07:56but seventy times seven.
07:57Therefore, the kingdom of heaven
08:02may be compared to a king
08:05who desired to settle accounts with his servants.
08:10Your account is in order.
08:12You may go.
08:27Your debt to us is far, far too large.
08:31You must settle your debt now.
08:33I will, my lord.
08:34I will.
08:35Very well.
08:37Pay the clerk.
08:39Thank you, my lord.
08:41Now.
08:43But, my lord,
08:44I cannot pay the money at once.
08:45I must have time, my lord.
08:47Take him.
08:49Sell him for a slave.
08:50Sell his wife and his children
08:51and all that he has to make payment on his debt.
08:54Slavery?
08:55Not only for himself,
08:56but his wife and children.
08:58In fear and trembling,
08:59the desperate man
09:00frantically begged his king for mercy.
09:03He would do anything
09:04if the king would save him
09:05and his family from slavery.
09:07If the king would be patient with him,
09:08he would pay it all back.
09:12Then the king,
09:14moved with compassion,
09:15forgave him the debt
09:16and turned him free.
09:26But that same servant as he went out
09:32came upon one of his fellow servants
09:35who owed him a hundred denarii.
09:46The king had just forgiven his servant a great debt,
09:48but the unmerciful man demanded payment
09:51from his fellow servant
09:51here and now
09:52for a much smaller sum.
09:55When the debtor asked for a little time
09:56in which to raise the small amount,
09:58the king's servant refused
09:59and showed him no mercy,
10:01but went out to have him thrown into prison.
10:06The poor man's friends
10:07were angered by this harsh treatment
10:09and went in to tell the king
10:10of what had just taken place.
10:12and my lord,
10:16he took him by the throat
10:17and refused to forgive him his debt
10:18or even give him time to pay it.
10:21Even now,
10:21he is on his way
10:22to have him cast into prison.
10:24I'm glad you told me of this.
10:32Have this unmerciful wretch
10:33brought before me.
10:35Immediately.
10:42You wicked servant.
11:06I forgave you all that debt
11:08because you begged me for mercy.
11:10Should not you show mercy
11:11to your fellow servant
11:12as I showed mercy to you?
11:15Take him.
11:16Put him in prison.
11:17He shall remain there
11:18until his debt is paid in full.
11:21Take him away.
11:31So also my heavenly father
11:33will do to every one of you
11:34if you do not forgive your brother
11:36from your heart.
11:40And with these words,
11:42Jesus ended the great lesson
11:43of the unmerciful servant.
11:46He had shown them clearly
11:47that if they forgave
11:49their fellow men
11:49their trespasses,
11:51so also their heavenly father
11:53would forgive them.
11:55And it stirred in them anew
11:56their great love and devotion
11:58for their teacher,
12:00our savior,
12:01Jesus Christ.
