00:00In the land of Palestine, not far from the River Jordan, which flows into the Dead Sea, there was a wilderness.
00:13This was the stern and forbidding place where Jesus of Nazareth had lived for 40 days, fasting and praying.
00:21This was also where he had resisted the temptations of Satan.
00:24Now, Jesus was making his way back toward the River Jordan, in order that he might begin his public ministry.
00:41Once before, Jesus had come from Galilee to find John the Baptist by the River Jordan, where he had been baptized by John.
00:49And now, Jesus was returning to Galilee.
00:54And as Jesus continued his lonely journey toward the Jordan River, again he came near a place where John the Baptist was talking with some of his own followers.
01:07Instantly, John the Baptist recognized Jesus, and again the same feeling of great humility it felt at the baptism came over him.
01:25Look!
01:27As Jesus drew nearer, the Baptist followers became aware of the importance of the moment when John said,
01:36The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
01:39This is he of whom I said,
01:42After me comes a man who ranks before me, for he was before me.
01:47On the following day, Jesus again approached John the Baptist.
01:59John was talking to some of his followers when he again looked upon Jesus and said,
02:03Behold the Lamb of God.
02:06And as Jesus drew nearer, two of John's followers became deeply moved.
02:09These two were fishermen from Galilee.
02:12Their names were Andrew and John.
02:16As John the Baptist and his followers watched Jesus,
02:20Andrew and John suddenly felt a strong urge to follow this man whose coming John the Baptist had foretold.
02:27These two could not account for this impulse.
02:29They simply felt that they must learn more about this man who John the Baptist said had come to take away the sin of the world.
02:38It seemed as though Jesus was waiting for them.
02:42He turned toward them expectantly.
02:47What do you seek?
02:49Master, where are you staying?
02:55Come and see.
02:59Without question, Andrew and John followed Jesus.
03:03They did not know where the Master was to lead them.
03:06They only felt that they must follow him.
03:08Not far from where they met Jesus was the place where they spent the rest of the day.
03:30And as they talked with Jesus, their questions were answered in a way that made them feel, yes, that made them sure that he was the promised Savior.
03:43It was this firm conviction that moved Andrew to go to his brother Simon.
03:48Andrew could no longer resist his urge.
03:51He felt that he must share this great news with his own brother.
03:54Thus, he went to search for his brother.
03:59This day's happenings had filled him with great hope and joy.
04:05John the Baptist had called Jesus the Lamb of God.
04:10Without a doubt, this must be the promised Savior.
04:14The Messiah had come at last.
04:17He must hurry and tell Simon.
04:29Simon!
04:31Greetings, Andrew.
04:32I've been wondering when you'd return.
04:33It's time we started for Bethsaida, don't you think?
04:36Bethsaida?
04:37Well, there's plenty of time for that.
04:40Simon!
04:41Why are you so excited, Andrew?
04:42What is it?
04:44Simon, we have found the Messiah.
04:48The Christ.
04:49The promised Savior.
04:51The Messiah?
04:53You speak with great conviction, Andrew, but...
04:56The Messiah?
04:58But it is true.
04:59We were sitting with John the Baptist when he came by.
05:01Where was this?
05:03Not far from the river.
05:05And when John the Baptist saw him, he said that this was he of whose coming he had been telling.
05:11Can it be possible that the Messiah has really come at last?
05:16And in our time?
05:18Oh, I'm sure of it.
05:20John and I spoke to him.
05:22We felt his great power.
05:25I knew then that I would follow him.
05:27Always.
05:28Where is he now, Andrew?
05:30Could I see him?
05:31Yes.
05:33Come, we can go right now.
05:34And when you see him, you'll know what I mean.
05:38And so Simon, still wondering if the promised Savior had really come at last, went with his brother to meet Jesus.
05:44As the two men neared the place where Andrew had left Jesus and John, again Andrew told his brother how John and he had met Jesus.
06:03And how they had felt this great urge to follow Jesus when he had said, come and see.
06:08And when Jesus saw Simon for the first time, Andrew and John were greatly surprised to hear him say, you are Simon, son of John.
06:22You shall be called Cephas.
06:23Cephas.
06:24Cephas.
06:25Cephas.
06:26Why, that means a rock.
06:28Cephas.
06:29Cephas.
06:30Cephas.
06:31Cephas.
06:32Why, that means a rock.
06:35From that moment, Simon also felt that Jesus was the Messiah.
06:42And from that day, Simon was called Cephas or Peter, which means the same, a rock or a stone.
06:49...
07:04The following day, as they were continuing their way to Galilee, they stopped by the
07:23side of the road to rest and refresh themselves.
07:27It was a hot day and the shade was welcome.
07:31They were tired and hungry and were looking forward to the friendship of the noonday
07:34meal together.
07:37Jesus gave thanks for the simple meal they were about to eat and his new disciples joined
07:42with him.
07:44They were conscious of the feeling of comradeship that was already becoming established among
07:47them.
07:50Then Simon, whom Jesus had renamed Peter, looked down the road and saw another traveler approaching.
07:57This was Philip, who came from Peter's own town of Bethsaida.
08:07But before Peter could even welcome Philip, Jesus was already leaving the group.
08:18Philip couldn't help but feel the warmth of Jesus, who spoke with such divine authority.
08:34Strangely drawn to Jesus, Philip eagerly joined this little group of disciples.
08:41It was an interesting group of men, most of them fishermen from Galilee.
08:46Different kinds of men.
08:49There was Peter, big and rugged.
08:52Peter, a man of extreme emotions, impetuous, quick tempered.
08:59And John, the deep thinker.
09:02He too was a fisherman who later became known as the disciple whom Jesus loved.
09:08Andrew, the businessman, quiet, discerning, deeply thoughtful.
09:15And Philip, the latest one to believe as soon as he had seen Jesus.
09:21And the spirit of new adventure was within each one of them.
09:24But more than that, they were inspired by the fact that the promised Savior had chosen
09:28them to be his friends and followers.
09:35After the meal, the men continued their journey to Galilee.
09:49Then Philip, saying that he would meet them further down the road, hurried on ahead.
10:04Philip was eagerly seeking a certain man named Nathaniel.
10:07So that he might tell him the good news.
10:11He found Nathaniel resting beside a fig tree.
10:13And when Philip approached him, Nathaniel looked up in curiosity.
10:16Greetings, Philip.
10:18Why are you in such a hurry?
10:20I have great news.
10:22We have found the Messiah.
10:23Philip, this cannot be.
10:26Don't disturb me with such ideas.
10:28Besides, it could not be true.
10:30But it is true, Nathaniel.
10:32He is the Messiah.
10:34Andrew and Simon and John are with him now, and they know it is so.
10:38At last we have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of
10:43Nazareth, son of Joseph.
10:47Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?
10:49Come and see.
10:52Because of Philip's insistent assurance, Nathaniel went with him to the road to await the coming
10:57of Philip's companions.
11:03They had not long to wait, for the group was not far behind.

11:37Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit.
11:44How do you know me?
11:46Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.
11:56You are the Son of God.
12:00You are the King of Israel.
12:04Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree.
12:06Do you believe?
12:09You shall see greater things than these.
12:13Yes, Nathaniel and the others believed.
12:17They knew this was the Messiah.
12:21And so Jesus of Nazareth gathered around him his first disciples.
12:26Men who upon meeting him had instinctively felt his divine power and the tenderness of his love.
12:33These men wanted to follow him.
12:35Though perhaps none of them realized then just how much their lives were to be changed under the influence of their divine teacher,
12:45our Savior, Jesus Christ.
