00:00In the land of Israel almost 2,000 years ago, the people went about their business as usual,
00:20thronging the cities, towns, and villages as they came to sell their goods, buy from the
00:24merchants, or pay their taxes, or visit the temple or synagogue. And as they worked or
00:30worshipped, they thought and talked about the coming of the promised Messiah. Some thought
00:35the Messiah would save them from their sins, while others hoped that the Messiah would restore
00:39Israel's national freedom and honor, which the hated Romans had taken from them.
00:54Every act of oppression only sharpened their feelings against their conquerors and increased
01:15their prayers for the coming of God's promised Savior.
01:18Throughout the land, the boys went to the synagogues to learn the law and the traditions of Israel
01:28from their teachers.
01:31And throughout the history of Israel, God has spoken to the prophets of our people.
01:38Long ago, God made a covenant with our forefathers, Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, promising that
01:48he would guide his people, and free them from their enemies.
01:52And through the prophets, God has promised us a Messiah who will restore our nation.
02:01The Messiah is the anointed one who is to redeem us from our sins.
02:08But before he comes, the Lord will send a messenger to proclaim his coming.
02:13The prophet Isaiah has said, he will be a voice crying in the wilderness.
02:27And the Lord has spoken to the prophet Malachi, saying,
02:32Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me.
02:41And the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple.
02:50Even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight, behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts.
03:01But as the prophet Malachi had foretold, there was even now one who had been sent to prepare the way for the coming of the Lord.
03:15For in a wild and desolate part of the land of Israel, a man named John lived a lonely life in the wilderness.
03:21He wore a garment of camel's hair and a leather belt about his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.
03:30The word of God had come to John in the wilderness, and he went into all the region about the river Jordan, preaching,
03:37Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
03:39And many people came to him, eager to hear this new prophet, who soon became known as John the Baptist.
03:47But when the people questioned John as to whether he was the promised Christ, he answered them,
03:53I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.
04:04He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
04:09His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary.
04:16For the chaff he will burn with uncrenshable fire.
04:20But thus came John the Baptist to the people of Israel, to baptize them in the river Jordan
04:27in preparation for the coming of the promised Savior.
04:30And it came to pass in those days that Jesus came from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to find John by the river Jordan.
04:54And on a certain day, as John was preaching by the river,
05:02he saw someone approaching who caused his heart to leap within him.
05:06I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?
05:32Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.
06:02And when Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water.
06:19And behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him.
06:25And, lo, a voice from heaven saying,
06:28This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
06:34I am well pleased.
06:38I am well pleased.
06:39I am well pleased.
06:41THE END
07:11And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan
07:21and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted.
07:35During that time, John had been carrying on his work by the river Jordan.
07:40So much attention had he gained that the Pharisees in Jerusalem
07:43had sent out a delegation of priests and Levites to question him.
07:48Who are you?
07:49I am not the Christ.
07:51What then? Are you Elijah?
07:53I am not.
07:54Are you the prophet?
07:56No.
07:56Who are you then?
07:58Let us have an answer for those who send us.
08:00What do you say about yourself?
08:02I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness.
08:06Make straight the way of the Lord, as the prophet Isaiah said.
08:10Then why are you baptizing if you are neither the Christ nor Elijah nor the prophet?
08:15I baptize with water.
08:18Among you stands one whom you do not know,
08:21even he who comes after me,
08:24the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.
08:27The following day,
08:41John was again by the river preaching
08:43when he saw Jesus coming toward him.
08:45Oh, the Lamb of God,
08:49which taketh away the sin of the world.
08:55This is he of whom I said,
08:57After me comes a man who ranks before me,
09:00for he was before me.
09:02I myself did not know him,
09:05but for this I came baptizing with water
09:07that he might be revealed to Israel.
09:09I saw the Spirit descend as a dove from heaven,
09:14and it remained on him.
09:16He who sent me to baptize with water said to me,
09:20He upon whom you see the Spirit descend and remain,
09:24this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.
09:31And I have seen and have borne witness
09:34that this is the Son of God.
09:37Some months later,
09:44while Jesus was traveling through Judea,
09:46Samaria, and Galilee,
09:48gathering his disciples and beginning his ministry,
09:52John was bringing people together at a place near Salem.
09:55Now a discussion arose between some of John's followers
09:58and a Jew over the question of purifying,
10:01and they questioned John.
10:02He who was with you beyond the Jordan,
10:07to whom you bore witness,
10:09he too is baptizing,
10:11and all are going to him.
10:13No one can receive anything
10:14except what has given him from heaven.
10:17You yourselves bear me witness that I said,
10:20I am not for Christ,
10:22but I have been sent before him.
10:24He must increase,
10:25but I must decrease.
10:27He who comes from above is above all.
10:31He who was of the earth belongs to the earth,
10:34and of the earth he speaks.
10:36But he who comes from heaven is above all.
10:41But the voice of John the Baptist
10:42was not to be heard much longer.
10:45A time later,
10:46Herod had John put into prison
10:48because John had fearlessly condemned the king
10:50for taking Herodias,
10:52his brother's wife,
10:52and living in unholy wedlock with her.
10:55But Herod was afraid to put him to death,
10:57for he knew the people regarded John as a prophet.
11:09From time to time,
11:10some of John's followers were allowed to visit him.
11:13And in this way,
11:14he kept in touch with the outside world.
11:18During such visits,
11:27they brought him word of the works
11:28and activities of Jesus.
11:31A long time had passed
11:32since he had baptized Jesus in the River Jordan.
11:36And now that he was shut up in prison,
11:39John wondered about Jesus' ministry.
11:41He had expected the promised Savior
11:43to assert himself as deliverer of Israel.
11:46Had he been mistaken,
11:48was Jesus the Messiah?
11:51So John sent his followers to ask Jesus,
11:55Are you he who is to come,
11:57or shall we look for another?
12:04John's disciples started their journey to Galilee
12:07to do as he had instructed them.
12:16In a small town in the province of Galilee,
12:18Jesus was engaged in his work of healing the sick.
12:22For whenever he reached the town
12:23and word of his presence went out,
12:26the people brought their suffering friends and relatives to him.
12:28And here John's disciples found him.
12:32They had come many miles to bring John's question.
12:37Should they wait,
12:38or should they interrupt?
12:41Perhaps it would be better to complete their mission now.
12:43John the Baptist has sent us to ask,
12:49Are you he who is to come?
12:51Or shall we look for another?
13:07In that hour he cured many of diseases and plagues and evil spirits,
13:11and on many that were blind he bestowed sight.
13:17Go and tell John what you have seen and heard.
13:20The blind receive their sight,
13:22the lame walk,
13:24lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear,
13:26the dead are raised up,
13:28the poor have good news preached to them,
13:30and blessed is he who takes no offense in me.
13:37So Jesus answered the messengers of John,
13:41and when they had gone,
13:42he spoke to the people concerning John.
13:48What did you go out into the wilderness to see?
13:51A reed shaken by the wind?
13:54What then did you go out to see?
13:56A man clothed in soft raiment?
13:59For behold, those who are gorgeously dressed
14:01and live in luxury are in king's courts.
14:04What then did you go out to see?
14:06A prophet.
14:08Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
14:11This is he of whom it is written,
14:13Behold, I send my messenger before thee.
14:17I tell you, among those born of women,
14:20none is greater than John the Baptist.
14:24Yet he who is least in the kingdom of God
14:26is greater than he.
14:41Meanwhile, the idle days pass slowly for John in prison.
14:45The stone walls that shut him in
14:47were a cruel barrier to the man
14:49who had lived his life in the open wilderness.
14:51And then one night,
14:56John's fate was decided in the fortress above him
14:59where Herod and his court were celebrating the king's birthday.
15:05Salome, the king's stepdaughter,
15:08had danced for Herod.
15:10So pleased was he that he had promised with an oath
15:13to give her whatever she might ask
15:15up to one half of his kingdom.
15:16Salome had been instructed by her mother Herodias
15:25to ask for the head of John the Baptist
15:27because he had condemned her mother's adulterous marriage
15:30to the king.
15:40Herod had given his word,
15:41and even now his soldiers were on their way to John's cell
15:45to carry out the gruesome order.
15:48The work of John the Baptist was finished.
16:18He had prepared the way for the coming of the Savior,
16:22of whom he had said,
16:25I myself did not know him,
16:28but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me,
16:32He upon whom you see the Spirit descend and remain,
16:36this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.
16:40And I have seen and have borne witness
16:43that this is the Son of God.
