00:00On the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea lies the land of Palestine. Before the birth
00:18of Jesus the country had been divided into several regions or districts. In the north
00:24was the province of Galilee and the Sea of Galilee with the well-known towns of Capernaum, Nazareth and Cana.
00:33Below this was the province of Samaria, usually avoided by the Jews who despised the Samaritans
00:39and looked upon them as an inferior people because they were a mixed race and had different
00:44religious practice and worship. Farther south was the province of Judea to which many travelers
00:52came to observe the holy days of Israel. For in Judea was the city of Jerusalem, the center
00:59of the Jewish faith and the location of the great temple of the living God.
01:13In the days of Herod the Great, king of the Jews, there was a man named Zacharias who lived
01:18in the hill country not far from Jerusalem. Zacharias was a priest of the house of Abijah,
01:25and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, whose name was Elizabeth. They were both righteous
01:31before God, walking in all commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. During a long
01:38and devoted life together, these two kindly old people had not been blessed with any children,
01:43but they had long since become resigned to this situation and were quite unaware that they were
01:49soon to become the chosen instruments of the Lord for an event that was to have great significance.
01:56In due time, it became necessary for Zacharias to go to the temple in Jerusalem to perform his duties
02:02as a priest. So taking leave of Elizabeth, he began his slow journey to the city.
02:09Now while he was serving as priest before God, according to the rules of the priesthood, it had fallen to him by lot to enter the temple of the Lord to burn incense, while the people remained outside praying.
02:34This was the part of the temple known as the holy place, in which stood the altar of incense, the table for the showbread, and the golden lampstand.
02:41Zacharias waited in front of the altar while an assistant priest brought in the live coals, and placed them upon the altar in preparation for the ceremony.
02:48Unaware of what soon was to happen, Zacharias waited for the sacred moment, Zacharias waited for the sacred moment when he would burn the incense to the Lord.
02:55Zacharias waited for the sacred moment when he would burn the incense to the Lord.
03:02Zacharias waited for the sacred moment when he would burn the incense to the Lord.
03:08Zacharias waited for the sacred moment, Zacharias waited for the sacred moment, Zacharias waited for the sacred moment when he would burn the incense to the Lord.
03:15άν of calvinical it, I would burn it for the sacred moment until an hour.
03:23For over and while he was getting there, I'm glad to worship him, and I may not gain joy when he would burn the incense to the Lord.
03:32THE END
04:02THE END
04:32Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard, and your wife, Elizabeth, will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.
04:44And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, for he will be great before the Lord.
04:53He shall drink no wine nor strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before his birth.
05:02He will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God, and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah.
05:13To turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just.
05:20To prepare a people that is ready for the Lord.
05:25How shall I know this?
05:27For I am an old man, and my wife has advanced in years.
05:31I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God.
05:38I was sent to speak to you, and bring you this good news, and behold.
05:43You will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things come to pass.
05:51Because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.
05:57Zacharias was filled with wonder and amazement.
06:06The angel had said that the Lord was soon to come.
06:10And also that he, Zacharias, and his wife, Elizabeth, were to have a son,
06:16whose name was to be John,
06:18and greater still, whose work was to prepare the way for the coming of the long-promised Savior.
06:27And as the people waited for Zacharias to appear,
06:49they wondered why he had remained so long in the temple.
06:53Surely enough time had been taken for the burning of the incense.
06:57But when Zacharias came out and attempted to conclude the ritual,
07:02he could not speak.
07:04What the angel had said was true.
07:07He was stricken dumb,
07:09and he would not be able to speak until after his son was born.
07:15Zacharias tried by signs to tell the people what happened in the holy place.
07:19They knew that something unusual had occurred,
07:22and when they saw that he could not speak,
07:25they realized that he must have seen a vision.
07:28With increasing excitement,
07:30the elderly priest tried to tell them what the angel Gabriel had prophesied to him,
07:34and how he had been stricken dumb.
07:37When his duties at the temple were over,
07:40Zacharias made his way home.
07:43There he disclosed to Elizabeth what had taken place at the temple in Jerusalem,
07:47and the reason for his loss of speech.
07:49Although Elizabeth was deeply concerned over her husband's inability to speak,
07:56she was filled with joy when she learned what the angel had told him.
08:00For many years she had wanted a child,
08:04but the years had gone by.
08:07Now at last they were to have a son.
08:12And so it was that in their old age,
08:16these two godly people were soon to realize the fulfillment of their prayers,
08:22and they humbly gave thanks to God.
08:24Months passed.
08:32Zacharias and Elizabeth remained at home
08:34and made ready for the coming of the child.
08:37Perhaps they did not fully realize what the child's future was to bring,
08:41but for the present they were blissfully happy
08:44in the knowledge that soon the angel's prophecy would be fulfilled.
08:50Thus the Lord has done unto me.
08:53In the days when he looked upon me
08:56to take away my reproach among men.
09:08When the prophecy of the angel Gabriel had been fulfilled
09:11and Elizabeth had brought forth a son,
09:14the news spread throughout the neighborhood,
09:17and friends and relatives of the elderly couple
09:19left their homes to visit the house of the newborn son.
09:23As they met on the road,
09:25these kindly people talked of the event which had taken place
09:28and looked forward with eager anticipation
09:30to the ceremony which was observed on such occasions.
09:35These friends were rejoicing
09:37in the happiness of Zacharias and Elizabeth,
09:40for they knew what a great blessing God had brought to this house.
09:43Elizabeth joyfully greeted her guests
09:52and proudly showed them the baby who was now eight days old.
09:57In the cradle lay the infant whose birth the angel Gabriel
10:00had foretold to Zacharias
10:02and who was to grow up to announce the arrival of the long-awaited Messiah.
10:07God has blessed you indeed, Elizabeth.
10:24What are you going to name the child?
10:28Zacharias, of course, after his father.
10:31Of course, he should be called Zacharias.
10:34Not so.
10:35He shall be called John.
10:38But none of your relatives is called by this name.
10:41He shall be called John.
10:47Zacharias,
10:48what name are you going to give the child?
10:52His name is John.
11:22Blessed be the Lord God of Israel.
11:44For he has visited and redeemed his people.
11:48He has raised up a horn of salvation for us
11:50in the house of his servant David.
11:54And thou, child,
11:56shall be called the prophet of the Most High.
11:59For thou shalt go before the Lord
12:00to prepare his ways.
12:05To give knowledge of salvation to his people
12:07and the forgiveness of their sins
12:10through the tender mercies of our God.
12:14When the day shall dawn upon us from on high
12:17to give light to those who sit in darkness
12:20and in the shadow of death
12:22and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
12:26The years passed and the land saw little change.
12:40It seemed almost as if it too
12:42waited in expectation of the promised Savior.
12:45Then there arose in Judea a new prophet
12:48in fulfillment of the great mission
12:50for which he had been born.
12:53For it was written in the ancient word of Isaiah,
12:55Behold, I send my messenger before thy face
12:59who shall prepare thy way.
13:02The voice of one crying in the wilderness,
13:05Make ye ready the way of the Lord.
13:07Make his path straight.
13:10This new prophet was John,
13:12son of Zacharias,
13:14grown to manhood in the wilderness
13:15and become strong in spirit.
13:18He wore a garment of camel's hair
13:21and a leather belt about his waist.
13:22And his food was locusts and wild honey.
13:26And the word of God came to John in the wilderness.
13:30And he went into all the region about Jordan,
13:32preaching,
13:34Repent,
13:35for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
13:37And many people came out to him,
13:41for they were eager to hear this new prophet
13:43whom they called John the Baptist.
13:46You brood of vipers,
13:48who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
13:51Bear fruits that befit repentance.
13:53And do not begin to say to yourselves,
13:56We have Abraham as our father.
13:58For I tell you,
13:59God is able from these stones
14:01to raise up children to Abraham.
14:03Even now,
14:05the axe is laid to the root of the trees.
14:08Every tree, therefore,
14:09that does not bear good fruit
14:10is cut down and thrown into the fire.
14:14These were frightening words,
14:16and the people were deeply moved.
14:18What then shall we do?
14:21What shall we do?
14:22He who has two coats,
14:25let him share with him who has none.
14:27And he who has food,
14:29let him do likewise.
14:31The tax collectors also came to be baptized.
14:34And they too questioned John.
14:37What then shall we do?
14:39Collect no more than is commanded of you.
14:42And we?
14:43What must we do?
14:45Rob no one by violence
14:47or by false accusation,
14:49and be content with your wages.
14:50As the people were in expectation,
14:54and all men question in their hearts
14:56concerning John
14:57whether he was perhaps the Christ,
15:01John answered them all,
15:02I baptize you with water,
15:05but he who is mightier than I is coming,
15:08the straps of whose sandals
15:10I am not worthy to untie.
15:13He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit
15:15and with fire.
15:17His winnowing fork is in his hand
15:19to clear his threshing floor
15:21and to gather the wheat into his granary.
15:24But the chaff,
15:25it will burn with unclenchable fire.
15:28And thus it was
15:29that John, son of Zacharias,
15:33now John the Baptist,
15:35began to fulfill the prophecy
15:37that the angel had made
15:39to his father in the temple.
15:40He will turn many of the sons of Israel
15:43to the Lord their God.
15:46And he will go before him
15:47in the spirit and power of Elijah
15:49to turn the hearts of the fathers
15:52to the children
15:53and the disobedient
15:55to the wisdom of the just
15:56to prepare a people
15:59that is ready for the Lord.
