00:00Sonic X Shadow Tokyo Mission Manga.
00:04It starts out with Shadow standing on the same place he was at in Adventure 2 with the
00:09cops wanting him, and it has a reference to a line in the first cutscene of Sonic Adventure
00:141 to try to make it a good story with the reference alone.
00:18So I'm bored.
00:19I'm a little less bored when he grinds down a rail, but only because we never actually
00:24got to see him escape from the cops in Adventure 2.
00:28Even then, this isn't exactly an earth-shattering revelation.
00:32Of course he escaped this way, and he's done this in the games before.
00:37Game elements are great, but I can't wait to see something new happen to justify the story's
00:42existence.
00:44Shadow starts running to escape and makes his way to Tokyo for literally no reason.
00:49Wouldn't he just want to go back to Eggman because the only thing he wanted to do back
00:54then was find the emeralds and use them in the Eclipse Cannon?
00:58And he knew how to get an emerald to it.
01:00He had such a good sense of direction that right after he met Eggman, he was confident
01:05he could get to a space transporter connecting to the Ark, and he did.
01:10Like his foot felt different every time he was facing north.
01:15He got to the Ark even though the only space transporter I saw in that game was in Eggman's
01:19pyramid base that he didn't know about.
01:23If we're running under the assumption only a few people made that he can only teleport
01:27short distances, he must have just run around aimlessly until he lucked out and found a space
01:33transporter.
01:34It's a lot more intuitive though to assume he warped to the Ark.
01:38It's a blatant author appeal to randomly have him go to Tokyo, and it's just as likely he'd
01:44go anywhere else.
01:47I like that just seeing any random human girls reminds him of Maria.
01:52Archie already tried that with Hope, so this is only new because he's seeing Maria and multiple
01:56girls in one place.
01:59Then he gets surrounded instantly by a huge amount of cops when he wasn't here nearly long enough
02:04for them to get alerted to be on the lookout for him by people with a language barrier.
02:09So they must have been looking for him for quite a while.
02:13So it must have been that everybody in their group all over the world was long since alerted
02:18to start looking for him.
02:20But these guys were already outside.
02:23They already knew to look for him here.
02:25And they're not mistaken for Sonic like in the game.
02:28It is interesting to see an alternate universe where they didn't think he was Sonic.
02:32Which gets rid of the alienating part of SC2's plot.
02:36The part that makes me feel like I dislike it, even though it's a masterpiece when it
02:40comes to how it's written overall.
02:42When you consider all of the components of writing, and not just whether it makes sense
02:47or not.
02:48Shadow threatens the soldiers, and takes an unusually long time for someone so fast to start beating
02:54up all of them.
02:55I assume the reason he attacks them is because they remind him of the soldiers who shot Maria.
03:00Since he doesn't actually have to attack them.
03:04The action is halfway great here.
03:06Because I can see the impact with one of his punches and one of his kicks.
03:10And the camera angle shows it fully.
03:13And they manage to still make the soldiers react like they're getting hurt.
03:16Despite the fact that they're wearing sunglasses and masks for no reason.
03:21With the other times he attacks here, the camera isn't showing the impact.
03:25It's also less in character for Shadow 2's melee attacks instead of simply homing attack
03:30on instinct.
03:31But it's for the best when it comes to fighting people.
03:35People like this in particular.
03:37But these people are just innocents doing their jobs.
03:41It's hard to tell what's supposed to be happening without any color in it sometimes.
03:45But he's not blocking or firing a laser from the shoe.
03:49I think that's just the air from his hover shoes.
03:52I hate this panel because it doesn't look like he's hovering as usual because it isn't
03:56angled like it's upright.
03:58And he's pointing his giant shoe in a direction other than down.
04:02So it looks like he's firing a laser, but I don't see the consequence of a laser being
04:07fired in the next panel.
04:09But I don't see a wind blast in the next panel either, or both of his shoes at once.
04:15He sends a car flying into a building, which would be an expensive problem for innocent
04:19people.
04:20And then all of a sudden he talks like he's got his fill of revenge.
04:24On these people in particular.
04:27Someone says he looks stronger than someone else who replies that it hurt his feelings.
04:32The narrative isn't taking the situation seriously anymore.
04:36It turns out Sonic and his friends are here to face off with him, with Tails looking uncharacteristically
04:41cowardly making me wonder why he's sticking around, and Nuggles being goofy looking, and
04:45Sonic having two eyes because this is based on movie Sonic.
04:50Even though it makes no sense to still give him two eyes when the only justification for
04:54it was that it made him fit in a live action medium, even though it didn't.
04:59He's still a blue cartoon character who would have everyone freaking out that they're
05:03hallucinating.
05:04So what were they thinking sticking with it?
05:07There's been way worse problems in the series than a redesign though.
05:12He's also looking uncharacteristically serious for movie Sonic.
05:15He's usually just a combination of Deadpool and Spider-Man.
05:19When Sonic's appeal was never about verbally making pop culture references.
05:25I've heard he was whiny and selfish in the first movie too.
05:28It feels refreshing to see Sonic face off with him with Nuggles and Tails behind him.
05:34See Nuggles being the only new thing for me.
05:36Logically, Shadow would completely lose due to having both Sonic, his equal match, and
05:42Nuggles and Tails against him who would sneak attack him while he's distracted.
05:46He'd be hopelessly outnumbered if he didn't just freeze time to effortlessly win immediately.
05:51Him not doing that would make him an absolute moron to anyone who can think.
05:55Only the most lame and worthless writing ever would have a member of the main cast able to freeze time whenever who doesn't use it at every chance to be helpful.
06:05It's pretty obvious time freezing power doesn't belong in an action series because it's way too story breaking.
06:13Granted, I can't remember any time that Shadow froze time without holding an emerald in his hand.
06:20Shadow lampshades what eyesores there, which I'm impressed the writer was allowed to get away with in an ad.
06:26Oh, the story ends there.
06:29Are you serious?
06:31I hated this in Archie too.
06:33You should tell a full story if you're going to advertise something with a story that wasn't in the thing you're advertising.
06:39Ultimately, it was for the best that the story ended here because both these characters have time freezing power.
06:45And the second that comes into play in an action series in a context where the characters would only care about winning the fight,
06:53the writing would have to go to shit to have a fight scene where more than one character gets to do something.
06:58Better for the story to be well written overall by ending here.
07:02I didn't watch the movie because it's live action, I heard Sonic wasn't cool in the first one, so I don't know if this completely rips off the movie.
07:10It'd be nearly pointless to experience to someone who watched it if it did, but it'd still be worth it for being better looking than the movie.
07:18I wish the movie looked like this because it's not live action and that combined with this dark fur meant that I wasn't distracted by him having two separate eyes.
07:27I glanced at every panel he was in and didn't stare long enough to see the space between them and my peripheral vision filled in the blanks to make him look normal.
07:35This bored me at first, but it wasn't so bad.
07:39The story was mostly about exciting action and what very little actual fighting there was was drawn perfectly half the time.
07:47It was cool to see him throw a car, even if I felt sorry for who would inconvenience.
07:52I glanced at that I thought I saw Maria and those other girls.
07:56It would feel like flanderization if it didn't happen so early after losing Maria from his perspective.
08:02I don't think any of this story is creative. I know he already threw cars and fought the soldiers in Shadow the Hedgehog, so this seems like it's just using stuff already from the games as dangling keys and calling it a dang.
08:15Of course you could say that about the movie it's based off too, because the whole thing is about Sonic Adventure 2.
08:21At least it's Sonic Adventure 2, which is the most movie looking plot in the franchise.
08:28With the way that the music is and the camera moves around, it's the one plot in the franchise that feels like a movie.
08:35I was also glad to hear that it wasn't exactly like the game.
08:39As much as I loved the plot of the game, there was no way it could possibly measure up to the plot of the game.
08:45So I'm glad I tried to do something new so it could give itself value.
08:50The story was an okay experience because the way it handled the action was unusually good for the series, and I don't think it's pacing was bad either.
08:59There's only so good it can be though when it was rushed out the door so fast it had no color in it, which means I have to stare at the action for longer trying to figure out what's going on, which is occasionally frustrating.
09:11And the title sucks, because Sonic X Shadow sounds like it's an ad for Sonic X Shadow Generations.
