00:00As fireworks light up the sky this New Year's Eve, they can also cause fear and stress for pets.
00:06The TTSPCA's chairman, Sita Kuruvilla, explains what steps you can take to keep your animals calm and secure.
00:14One of the first things she recommends is avoiding the use of chains and ensuring pets are kept in safe, enclosed areas.
00:21They're not chained or tied anywhere, but enclosed in a safe area that they can't squeeze out of or climb over.
00:31When they get terrified, they do all kinds of things that they would not normally do, like climb, squeeze through tiny spaces, and that's how they get injured.
00:41Another critical step is ensuring your pet can be identified if it gets lost.
00:46Even if you take a marker and you write your phone number on the collar, if you have no other form of identification, phone contact on the collar.
00:56Because if they get lost, there's no means of finding the owner.
01:01She also advises watching for signs of stress, such as pacing or trembling, and creating a safe, quiet space for your pet.
01:09They tend to be breathing, you know, rapidly and maybe panting a lot and, you know, the heart is racing and that sort of thing.
01:21So those are signs of stress. I don't, the most people can do is to try to calm their animals, you know, during the period because it's unlikely, you know, no vet clinic is open at that time or anything.
01:34So they will just have to try if their animal looks really stressed, and let's say they have it outside, they should bring it into a safe, quiet spot and maybe stay with them just so that they feel reassured.
