Transcript
00:00Baselon Street residents say their problems came to a head back in June
00:04when WASA came to the area to fix a sewage issue. However, they feel as though
00:09more harm was done than good.
00:11So they dug up the road and they fixed the sewer and they fixed the sewer.
00:18When they fixed it, since they fixed it, the road has been in this condition.
00:23They covered it with some steel thing. They said they're coming back. They have a contractor
00:26will be coming here in two weeks' time and fix it. Nothing has been done since June month and now.
00:32There's a big hole in the middle of the road. They cover it with those iron sheets that you'll
00:35see on the ground. When the vehicles drive over that, you cannot sleep.
00:39I haven't got a good night's sleep for maybe over three months now.
00:46But you cannot sleep. You hear the noises. You could hear the noises. You see a car driving
00:50slow. That is one car. This is a busy street. All taxis take this route to go to the hospital.
00:56They say the patchwork has also been causing damage to their vehicles,
01:00with some of them already counting their losses.
01:03Yesterday evening, when we come back home from hospital and we're reversing in,
01:08the car tire burst from this iron thing here. And it's months now we're calling and reporting and
01:13only saying we had to wait.
01:15The residents are simultaneously contending with a compromised TNT pole,
01:20which they say was also damaged by WASA personnel a few months ago.
01:25Since the bouncer said it was coming, they called. And apparently, like,
01:29Flo came and watched. And they said they can't do anything because of the wires on the pole.
01:33We called TNT. TNT is saying the same thing. So it's on left and right, back and forth,
01:37who is to do what, what is to do what. But they are not watching the poles. They don't want it to
01:40fall. When it falls, it falls on the house. My house is next door. It could also get damaged.
01:46There are people passing here and afraid to park their car there because they don't want to take
01:49the risks of parking the car and the pole falling on the vehicle. And it's too long. Look how long
01:54I've summarized it and already changed the pole already.
01:56After multiple reports to Flo, TNT and WASA with no redress,
02:01the residents turned to TV6, contacted for feedback. WASA informed TV6 News that it was,
02:09in fact, the Port of Spain City Corporation, which was doing drainworks in the area,
02:14and damaged the sewer. WASA says it then partnered with the corporation to restore
02:19the damaged sewer lines and the corporation was expected to restore the area. The authority says
02:26it will liaise with the corporation on the matter. Meantime, TNT is giving the assurance
02:31that the pole does not pose any immediate danger and adds that it is working on having the other
02:37utility providers remove their infrastructure so that the old pole can be removed in the
02:43shortest possible time. Renessa Cutting, TV6 News.
