TV6 reporter Rynessa Cutting got some views from members of the public dowtown Port of Spain, following the Prime Minister's announcement that he would be demitting office before his term limit. Here's what they had to say.
00:00I'm glad Rowley is going because he is oppressing the people. There are plenty of things in the country going on and he's not doing anything about it.
00:09There are poor people starving. He's studying different things. There's plenty of crime going on in the place. He's not studying that.
00:17He's SOEing and taking training and he's just oppressing the place, hard, hard. It will help. It will help.
00:24So I'm glad he's going here. If somebody else comes and tries something new, see what they're doing.
00:31That is Rowley's choice. Everybody is entitled to their choice. Regardless of whether the public is for him or the public is not for him, he's still entitled to his choice.
00:41I cannot give Mr Rowley wrong for wanting to go. It would be unfair to him.
00:47I have heard attacks on Prime Ministers in this country. The nastiest set of attacks I have heard is on Mr Rowley. I don't support him. I am telling you that I don't support him.
01:00But those attacks on him is too nasty. Some are racist too.
01:04I don't want him to leave. I want him to do what he has to do and then he can do. He's leaving. He has things to fix. Don't set things this way and you want to run out on me.
01:13Fix the place and then you can leave. Thank you. Mr Prime Minister.
01:20Do you think that Rowley leaving will help or hurt the PNM?
01:25I think it will be a good thing that he's leaving. I don't see he did anything for the country. That's all I have to say.
01:36Who would you like to see leave the PNM?
01:39Actually I'm not for either PNM or whoever. I just like to see somebody do something positive for the country.
01:46It doesn't matter PNM or whoever. Once you're positive and you're going to do something good.
01:52Thank you Jesus. It's about time. Give room to some new ideas. Somebody who will have more better ideas.
02:03Because clearly he seems to me, in my opinion, like he lost ideas what to do to carry the country forward.
02:12As for me, I'm a port worker and right now we are on 20-30 salaries.
02:16And up to now the last Prime Minister which was Ms Kamala Bissett, she signed off on our agreement for 12%.
02:24And up to now the Prime Minister and they are not sanctioning that.
02:28So right now, for me, that's a big loss for me. So I am very happy to hear he's stepping out.
02:36I applaud the man. Because the management he did in this contracted economy, where globally the economies are contracted.
02:43He has done well. They get six hospitals, they get roads, highways and he restored empty treasury.
02:49Even borrowing from the heritage and he restored the heritage and civilisation fund.
02:52So you see this bad messaging that a lot of these sub-literates have.
02:56These politically bankrupt people who don't know the history of this country.
03:00PNM has always been purposefully adding value in many ways.
03:03Who would you like to see take over as political leader of the PNM?
03:07Kareem Marcel, of course. Because he will rise from politician to statesman like Morris Marshall.
03:12And I'm being brutally frank about it. Not Stuart Young, sadly.
03:15Not Imber. Definitely not the commercial rasta.
03:21But yes, groom that young brother. Or even Camille Robinson said groom him too, if she wants to go up.
03:30But that brother, that young brother, he means the purpose of business. The business of serving the people.
03:35Any message you'd like to give the Prime Minister before he leaves?
03:39Well, the message I will, I will always be honest.
03:44Thanks a lot for holding the position. Because the position is really not an easy position to be in.
03:48Because the country, the matters in the country, I think it's real, how to say it, to solve it now.
03:54It will be a real major thing, but I can't see him do a good work.
03:59He do a good work or he do a bad job.
04:02I just say thanks for holding the position as a minister.
04:05I'm not doing anything now, but I'm saying thanks.
