00:00Now this is inside of the compound 35 Bryson Road, TNTech. This is the condition of the road we're here.
00:12It's a situation TNTech workers say they have been dealing with for more than two years, and one that has only been getting worse over time.
00:20Fed up of what they tell TV6 News, where numerous ignored complaints to TNTech's management at the compound, the workers took action on Friday morning.
00:28According to executive member of the oilfields workers' trade union, TNTech's section, Darren Garner, the demonstration was in keeping with their rights under the Occupational Safety and Health Act to remove themselves from an unsafe working environment.
00:43In light of the fact that on the compound, there are some extremely large potholes which collect water, creating a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
00:54There's also a mechanic dome on the compound, and by the mechanic dome, they collect tires.
01:02Those tires on the inside of it, you know, typically tires collect water, and it's also a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
01:09So it's a major mosquito infestation. Employees would have been complaining about it.
01:12Garner states that it can also cause people to fall and their vehicles to be damaged.
01:18So the workers supported by the union took the stance this morning that we decided enough is enough, and the union was hoping that the management would have treated the matter in an amicable manner.
01:36Ghana claims that even while workers were demonstrating, there were efforts by management to get them to return to the job.
01:44Not taking their safety into account.
01:47We wanted them to go into the compound which is infested with the mosquitoes to carry out works.
01:53Now we would have had a comrade who would have contracted an ailment that is affiliated with pests, specifically leptospirosis on a rat.
02:03And there was a rat infestation in the yard at one point, and he was told by management that they cannot verify if he contracted the leptospirosis on the compound or at home.
02:14So being proactive and having an incident like this, we decided to take a proactive approach.
02:21But there is some relief, as Garner states that during the demonstration, a company was brought in to spray the compound for mosquitoes.
02:29We just left, and the work just began.
02:32So the spraying of the compound is taking place as we speak, and we received, and as I said, we got a word-of-mouth confirmation that the prevention of the compound is to commence tonight, into tomorrow morning.
02:47He says the information that there is a purchase order for the paving of the area was not communicated to the OWTU or the workers prior.
