00:00Children are the future of the nation, and these young ones were part of a volleyball
00:04camp held last week at the Maloney Indoor Sport Arena.
00:07The Challengers Volleyball Club, in collaboration with the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs,
00:12had the huge responsibility of conducting the sessions.
00:15Guiding the youngsters was Coach Kanai Serju, who has many years of experience when it comes
00:20to this sport, and it was then time to get down to business.
00:24This as the participants at the camp were taking part in different drills.
00:27According to Serju, who is also known as Coach Perry, this program is a step in the right
00:33direction.
00:34When you look at the children, ages from the age of 6 to 16, they are the future for our
00:41national volleyball team.
00:43We have run this program for development.
00:47We have coaches here working with me, Edmacher, Salam, teaching the athletes the skills of
00:54volleyball.
00:54The objective of this program was to get individuals to the next level of the Trinidad and Tobago
01:00team, such as the under-16 and under-19.
01:03As such, Serju said proper methods had to be applied to help them succeed.
01:08We must be able to start a foundation of volleyball.
01:12Why?
01:12Because they are going to the national team instead of coaches teaching you how to bump
01:16and serve and spike.
01:18The coaches in our country need to start the development by the right technique.
01:22And I have started off this program right through in respect to this.
01:27Also assisting Coach Perry was Abdullah Salam who played volleyball and now does coaching.
01:33He thinks this is the right time to gather young participants involved in this sport.
01:37This camp will develop the young athletes in the sense that most of the athletes start
01:42training from when they are old or teenagers.
01:44This camp starts from when the children are young, from when six years, seven years.
01:48So it will help further develop sports within the country and also develop the volleyball
01:52within the country from a young age, from primary school age.
01:56One man who could not be left out was Jonathan Hamilton, a professional basketballer originally
02:01from Rio Claro.
02:02He graced the event with his presence to give a motivational lecture to the children.
02:07I know there's a big plan for every child in Trayvon Tobago.
02:11We just need our leaders to hop on board and come join us.
02:15Let's unify everything.
02:16I play basketball and I've never played professional volleyball in my life.
02:19But I have a love for the game because I have a love for all the training and all the
02:23youths, you know, so I'm urging the ones who is in power, who have the resources, to lend
02:30the resources, you know, to the younger ones because they are the future, they are the next
02:33generation.
02:33The volleyball camp in Maloney ran from August 10th to the 14th from 9 a.m. to 2.30 p
02:39.m.
02:39and Coach Perry was pleased that not a single participant was absent for any of the five days.
02:45Then with Nawani, Chiefs Export.
