00:00As this great twin island approaches another anniversary of independence, we
00:05reflect on our past and the strides we have made over the years. Senior Counsel
00:09Martin Daly says we have come a long way since 1962, but there's still more work
00:15to be done. He outlines four major pillars he believes will make TNT a
00:19better country in the near future. They are the petrochemical sector, the state
00:24of the steel pan industry, governance arrangements, and the education system.
00:28Mr. Daly says this country is fortunate enough to have had several oil and gas
00:34booms over its history which allowed citizens to enjoy a high standard of
00:38living. However, he notes, past leaders did not do enough to diversify the
00:43economy. The petrochemical industry on supply of natural gas and that I think
00:51was the most significant decision and most positive decision that was made
00:55subsequent independence. And regardless of political back-and-forth, we have to
01:01salute all of those who brought things like Point Lisa's into being. With
01:07regards to the steel pan, Mr. Daly says he's pleased that it is now recognized
01:12as the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago, but recognition must not be
01:16the be-all and end-all. If I had heard that a hundred million was going to go
01:21into a pan factory and the things that go in a pan factory, I'd be a lot more
01:26optimistic about the contribution that pan can make to the economy.
