02:39Good evening Trinidad and Tobago and welcome to Beyond the Tape.
02:41My name is Whitney Husbands.
02:43Convenience is a word that we're hearing more and more of,
02:45not just on social media but also throughout the streets
02:49because we're seeing the crackdown of the TTPS coming out in their numbers
02:53but doing things in a way that the public may not receive
02:56as welcoming to the law-abiding citizens of Trinidad and Tobago.
03:00At this time, I am very excited as usual because the young lady who's here with us,
03:04she's always on point and willing to assist us in many ways when it comes to questions
03:09and answering questions on what's going on with the TTPS
03:12and how as civilians we can do better moving forward with the crime situation
03:16going on in Trinidad and Tobago.
03:18At this time, I'd like to welcome Renee Bain Keller,
03:20attached to the K-9 and Mounted Branch ASP.
03:24Mounted and K-9.
03:25Mounted and K-9, yes.
03:26Welcome ASP and I hope that everything is okay with you today.
03:30Yes, everything is fine.
03:32I have a slight injury on my finger but I'm here to do and serve my country.
03:35So good day Trinidad, well good evening Trinidad and Tobago.
03:38I am ASP Renee Bain Keller.
03:40Now, let us know what has been going on since the last time you've been here
03:44with the K-9 and Mounted Branch Unit.
03:48A lot has happened.
03:50I'm new there so I'm making the changes.
03:52I am in training to be a mounted officer.
03:55We also recently had a graduation with a number of civilians
03:58who would have been participating in our mountain
04:01where we train civilians to ride the horses.
04:04So that has been exciting.
04:06And then we have lots of children on the compound because it's summertime,
04:10July, August vacation.
04:13So we have a lot of outreach programs ongoing at the moment.
04:17And clearly we are seeing more and more children participating.
04:21And what we're seeing here on the screen,
04:24is this that the students from the graduation?
04:27Yes, those are the students that would have been trained by the mountain.
04:30The trainers are the police trainers who are mounted officers
04:33who would train civilians.
04:35They would have trained, I believe, for a period of six months.
04:37It's actually a program that has been instituted,
04:41maybe I think it was under,
04:43what they had at the time was the ghost sign.
04:45It's maybe about four, maybe about six years old, I think.
04:48And due to the pandemic, there was a halt to the program.
04:51So we have recently re-bombed the program,
04:53and these are the graduates from it.
04:55And we're hoping to participate more with civilians.
04:57So what they can do is contact Mountain Branch online.
05:00We are setting up our online system come the last quarter of the year
05:04for ease of bookings and engagement with the public.
05:07This is really interesting. I didn't even know this happens.
05:10And this is also an opportunity for young persons
05:13to get to understand more in which the TTPS is doing
05:18with the canine and Mountain Branch.
05:20And not only that, this is also a part of a sport.
05:23It is. It is. It's equestrian.
05:26Equestrian. Equestrian, correct.
05:29It's an expensive sport.
05:31It's an expensive sport, yes.
05:34And this is absolutely free.
05:35It is free, correct.
05:37They would have to get the gears.
05:40They'll be guided as to what kind of attire that they need to wear with respect.
05:43You have to wear special fitting pants in order to ride the horse
05:47so that you don't get chafing.
05:49Okay, understood.
05:50Now, I spoke about inconvenience a few minutes ago,
05:53and the public feeling that the TTPS is always inconveniencing them
05:58when it comes to the roadblocks and the activities that we're seeing happening,
06:02not just in Trinidad, but also in Tobago.
06:05Now, earlier this morning, there was a traffic disruption
06:08between the corner of Argyle Street and Observatory Street.
06:13And this is a bit of what took place,
06:16and you know how it goes with the civilians.
06:19Very upset with what was taking place,
06:22but this is what we're seeing happening as we speak,
06:29and I know this is something that no one was predicting.
06:35But what is happening now after this?
06:37Because this is going to cause, or did cause, a lot of traffic,
06:40unless the TTPS stepped in and tried to rectify the situation.
06:44All right, so that situation, I actually saw it circulating on Facebook,
06:49and they actually said it was an earthquake.
06:51So it was a misrepresentation.
06:53Unfortunately, apparently, there was an old building, and it became compromised.
06:57And because it became compromised,
06:59some of the construction or the building itself ended up in the roadway.
07:05And if you'll see, there's hanging wires.
07:07And I know we like to use the word inconvenience,
07:10but we also have to remember that the police has a mandate to make the roads safe.
07:15And part of the safety, because if we allow persons through the rubble,
07:18and we allow persons through the exposed TNT wires,
07:21and we didn't take control of the situation, and somebody's injured,
07:24it comes back again, what did the police do?
07:27So I think it is better that we learn a side of caution
07:30by creating such a, what I would say, a minor inconvenience
07:33to prevent anything major happening.
07:35But, you know, anytime you see traffic, everyone says,
07:37I'm sure there's a roadblock happening there, but not on this land.
07:40No, so that wasn't a roadblock.
07:42As I said, it was a dilapidated or deteriorating building,
07:45and some of the rubble unfortunately ended up in the work,
07:47and there was some exposed wires.
07:49If you also look at it, there would have been fire.
07:51The fire officers were also there in attendance,
07:54and so they made sure to cordon off and make sure everything was safe
07:57before persons could traverse that road again.
08:00So now everything seems to be fine?
08:02I can't say I didn't do a follow-up on it,
08:04but I haven't heard any follow-up reports, any negative reports,
08:06saying that there's further inconvenience there.
08:08Okay, all right, we'll keep them updated with that.
08:10At this time, let's take a look at what made today's headlines.
08:18[♪dramatic music playing♪♪.
08:35[♪dramatic music playing♪♪.
09:04We are back, and yesterday was a beautiful day,
09:06apart from all the darkness that we see on a regular basis
09:11happening in Trinidad and Tobago.
09:13We had a celebration of emancipation and the parade
09:16where a lot of young persons came out in their numbers,
09:19in their beautiful outfits.
09:21People, it is not costumes, okay?
09:24It is beautiful outfits that we saw on display,
09:27and we also heard from the Honorable Prime Minister
09:30say a few words to the public,
09:33and we saw other persons, not just from the government,
09:37but also from the opposition coming out
09:39and being a part of the celebration.
09:42It was a huge parade, and I was happy that it wasn't,
09:45you know, extremely wet yesterday,
09:47so persons were able to celebrate,
09:49and we had no incidences happening at all,
09:53thus far from what I read,
09:55and it was a safe parade that took place yesterday.
09:58So I'm happy that everyone was safe
10:01and was able to have a great celebration.
10:07Beautiful display.
10:08It was.
10:10And then we, apart from all the beauty that we saw there
10:14for the parade, as I mentioned,
10:16the darkness that is always just there lingering,
10:20and there was two shot dead by officers.
10:23Now, two men were shot dead by police early yesterday morning
10:27after they opened fire on officers, police said.
10:30Up to yesterday evening, police said
10:32they did not have the identity of either man.
10:36A third person who was in the company of the deceased
10:39was believed to have also been shot during the shootout,
10:43but he managed to run away, said the officers.
10:46So I know this investigation.
10:48It's ongoing, so I would not be able to touch on that
10:51until we get more information on that.
10:54Apart from that as well,
10:56with the media release that the TTPS has put out there
11:00to the public domain of firearm ammo
11:02was seized in the Western Division.
11:05A firearm and several rounds of ammunition
11:07were seized by officers from the Western Division
11:10during exercises today.
11:12So between the hours of 11.30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
11:16on the 2nd of August, 2024,
11:19officers from the West End Police Station
11:22conducted an anti-crime exercise
11:24in the Upper Blue Basin Road area in Diego Martin.
11:28And acting on intelligence,
11:30the officers proceeded to a nearby bamboo patch
11:32where they conducted an intense search of that area.
11:36And those were the items that were found.
11:38And, you know, persons will watch it and say it's rusty guns.
11:41Yes.
11:42But you can clean a gun, right?
11:43Yeah, you can.
11:44And you couldn't.
11:45Correct, and utilize it.
11:46And, I mean, whether it's rusty or not,
11:49even if it's purported to be,
11:51at the time of a crime,
11:52it can still cause some intimidation and fear.
11:55Yes.
11:56And, again, you know, we're extremely busy.
11:58Six arrests, firearm narcotics seized,
12:01six persons arrested,
12:02a firearm and a quantity of marijuana were seized
12:04during a warrant exercise
12:06conducted in the Southwestern and Central Division
12:09over the past 72 hours.
12:13So we could see what is going on
12:17with the officers having an arrest.
12:19Because many times persons will say
12:21that we've seen the officers there
12:22and we're not seeing anyone being apprehended.
12:24But they were busy making sure that it was an arrest.
12:26Yes, we're having a lot of successes.
12:28And you used the word inconvenience.
12:30And, as I said, we have a real fear or a sense,
12:33these citizens have a real fear or a sense of crime.
12:36And we are taking this opportunity
12:38to be proactive and not reactive.
12:41They're saying that we,
12:42the school of thought is that we do the same thing
12:45over and over.
12:46But that is part of policing.
12:48That is part of even when you go to school,
12:50more or less, you learn your timetables over and over.
12:53And we have to do things over and over
12:55and we tweak it accordingly so that we can get it right.
12:58Because we want citizens to feel safe.
13:01And, as I said, you used the word inconvenience.
13:04Yes, that's the word of the day.
13:06That's the word of the day, inconvenience.
13:08But we have to do something about crime.
13:11We need to fulfill our mandate,
13:13which is to make the roads or every place
13:15in Trinidad and Tobago safe again.
13:17And by that, we want to have a show of our service out there.
13:21And we're not just having a show of service.
13:23You are speaking the results.
13:25You are literally reading the results
13:27from us having these roadblocks.
13:29And not just roadblocks only.
13:30We also have a heavier police presence
13:32so that that sense of fear and that crime opportunity,
13:36we are trying to diminish the percentage of that.
13:39Now, we speak about this topic in particular a lot on the show.
13:44The dating, online, the marketplace, Facebook,
13:48where persons are being caught in this dark web
13:52and losing thousands of dollars.
13:56Sometimes people getting injured, harmed, raped, you name it.
14:00What could you say again to the public
14:02when dealing with these matters?
14:05Actually, I was in conversation with our head of corporate
14:08and we are looking at a different strategy
14:10and an angle that could probably engage the public a bit more.
14:13Because I think sometimes people, one of the challenges
14:16is taking the time to read when the media releases
14:18and warnings come out.
14:19So we are looking to adopt a different strategy
14:21that may get a bigger engagement.
14:23One other thing I think is situational awareness.
14:25I think a lot of persons in Trinidad and Tobago
14:27know of crime, but they're not aware of it
14:30because it hasn't hit home.
14:32So they're not into the situational awareness of crime
14:35and how it can affect them.
14:37And I think being online, it creates,
14:40especially as some persons are lonely,
14:42and we make friends easier during the pandemic,
14:45being engaging online and making friends
14:49or playing games have become the norm.
14:51So what I would say to persons is that
14:54don't allow your vulnerability to shroud your good judgment.
14:57And there are steps, I'm not going to say
15:00everything negative about online
15:02because there are positive engagements,
15:04but they have to be conscious in the engagement
15:06where they meet the person, why they meet any person,
15:09who knows that you're going to meet this person.
15:11So there are certain steps that I would like to give them
15:14so that they can stay safe once we get that time.
15:17Yes, we will definitely get a time to mention
15:19that again to the public because sometimes desperation
15:22is a hell of a thing.
15:24And it's not to make fun of anyone
15:26feeling like they need that attention
15:30and they want companionship.
15:32And they can't get it, but they have to make sure
15:34that they put measures in place
15:36that someone can account for them
15:38or they can account for the person that they're engaging with.
15:40I mean, we're on the topic, can we continue with it?
15:42Yeah, we can take a break.
15:44Yeah, let's take a break.
15:45And when we come back, we'll continue with that
15:47and we will take some calls as well.
15:49We'll be back.
