00:00 Eight Signal Hill Secondary School students top the 2023 Advanced Examinations Merit List
00:07 in the Caribbean in the Performing Arts, Building and Mechanical Engineering and Theatre Arts.
00:14 Five students of Performing Arts teacher, Antoneil Blackman, are in the top 10. Melinda Alfred is the
00:21 top Performing Arts student in the Caribbean. Melinda is currently enrolled at UWE's Mona
00:27 Campus in Jamaica. Ms. Blackman spoke with TV6 News expressing hope that the Performing Arts
00:34 play a more integral role in the economy. Developed in terms of it being one of an
00:40 integral aspect that could bring back economic and cultural returns back to our country.
00:46 I think that is one that has been any back burner and it should be one that should have some form
00:52 of investments in it and be seen as a job that is equal and important as well. Clarissa Gill,
00:58 who topped the merit list in the Caribbean in Performing Arts, told the TV6 News that she wants
01:04 to be someone who leaves a mark on the world. I feel ecstatic and I feel accomplished because I
01:12 did a lot of work and it's really good to see that your hard work pays off, your long nights,
01:17 your tears, you know. Yeah, it's really good to see that you actually put your all into something
01:24 and you reap rewards. Teacher Stacey Abrahams' student made a mark recently in building and
01:31 mechanical engineering drawing. Ms. Abrahams said all students went the extra mile in achieving
01:38 these accomplishments. I'm certainly elated. I'm proud of them. They have worked hard. They have
01:43 proved themselves to be students who really want to go the distance and it's because of this they
01:48 were able to accomplish this. Principal of the school, Ariana Dabroford, told the TV6 News
01:56 that she hails the students' achievements with a great sense of deep pride and honor.
02:04 Usually, excellence comes from dedication, hard work, and from some schools that are classified
02:13 as prestigious. The point that I want to make is that a star can shine anywhere and Signal Hill by
02:22 no means is considered a prestigious school yet, but if we look around at the number of achievements,
02:30 almost every single student in one class made the merit list and we continue to make the merit list
02:38 year after year and it is an inspiration for others that wherever you are, just do your part
02:45 and you can shine. Bishops High School, Tobago, achieved excellence in principle of business,
02:51 music, psychology, and French, while Scarborough Secondary excelled in law and technical drawing.
02:58 Speyside High School made its mark in industrial technology mechanical. Elizabeth Williams, TV6 News.
