00:00Education Secretary Zorisha Hackett told TV6 News the implementation of police officers at some Tobago schools will be brought to the fore during a meeting with the Minister of Education in Trinidad on Thursday.
00:17The Education Secretary Zorisha Hackett told TV6 News a determination on the way forward will only be made public after the meeting with Education Minister Michael Dowlett and his team.
00:29So Elizabeth, we don't have police presence in any of our schools in Tobago because we have a high level meeting with the Minister of Education tomorrow at the Ministry of Education where we are going to actually make a determination on our needs.
00:45At present, we have identified two schools that we would need to provide that type of assistance from the TTPS and so those two schools will be assigned officers very soon but it's at the meeting where we're going to make the determination.
00:59The Education Secretary said the meeting on Thursday would also seek the intervention of Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander.
01:08As you would appreciate, there's a level of autonomy that the Tobago House of Assembly has through 32 plus areas.
01:14Education is one and so as Secretary of Education, I was given the opportunity to actually make a determination, of course, through the guidance of the Chief Secretary on our needs here in Tobago.
01:25We've since had that conversation, Chief Secretary and myself, inclusive of School Supervisor 3 and the two principals of the schools under focus and so we're going to reconfirm our efforts with the Minister of Education tomorrow and under the guidance also of the Minister of Homeland Security and the Commission of Police.
01:45In Trinidad, police officers are now stationed at 50 high-risk schools.
01:50Elizabeth Williams, TV6 News.
