Chemotherapy is a form of cancer treatment by taking anti-cancer drugs to destroy and/or prevent cancer cells from multiplying.

Chemotherapy is used to treat advanced cancers and metastases, often in combination with radiotherapy, surgery, and hormonal therapy.
More than 50 chemotherapy drugs are currently in use. All of these drugs can prevent cancer cells from multiplying.
Another mechanism of action of anti-cancer cells is to act on the nucleus of a cancer cell, slowing down or stopping the process of DNA replication.
The combination of chemotherapy drugs with different mechanisms of action is considered more effective than each drug separately.
Chemotherapeutic drugs for the treatment of cancer are selected depending on the location of the tumor, on the age and diseases of the patient, on the tolerance of the drug by the body and possible side effects.
The main types of chemotherapy are general and local.
The main side effects of chemotherapy are: decreased sensitivity of the nervous system, hair loss, infertility, redness of the skin, impaired taste perception, effects on the heart, particular toxicity to blood cells and the digestive tract, nausea and vomiting.
With resistance to treatment during chemotherapy (in the case of taking anthracyclines, podophyllotoxin and its derivatives, alkaloids isolated from periwinkle herbaceous and taxanes), the course of treatment should be changed to other drugs with a different mechanism of action.
