00:08today we're going to crochet these adorable candy fish i named them candy fish because they remind
00:14me of pieces of candy and these are very customizable and no sew amigurumi um projects
00:23you can make them with any color yarn you want have fun with color combinations you
00:29can also make your fish long or you can make it short by omitting um body rounds and if you
00:37want
00:37to you can get extra fancy with it and use some drop stitches like this one here you'll see those
00:45longer drop stitches alternating with regular single crochets and it creates this pretty um pattern
00:54so again lots of customization options and these make really great little key chains as well
01:02for materials you are going to use some medium weight yarn i'm using this yarn i got from hobby lobby
01:08called yarn bee it is called comfy classic it comes in some beautiful colors though i have to note in
01:14this video you're going to see me struggle a lot with how splitty the yarn is so i don't actually
01:19recommend it for amigurumi but it is beautiful yarn and the results um they're very soft and the
01:27results i quite like um but if you're looking for enjoying your time crocheting this fish i would
01:34recommend a non-splitty medium weight yarn with this yarn i'm using a 2.25 millimeter crochet hook
01:41feel free to use whichever size you feel like is most comfortable for you to use with your
01:49yarn but just make sure you are able to crochet tightly enough without having gaps between your
01:55stitches on that note um with the yarns you will need a few different colors you can use as many
02:04colors
02:04as you'd like or as few as you'd like um i used one two three four five different colors one
02:11color for the
02:12head and the tail and then i used four colors for the body you will also need some fiber fill
02:21stuffing
02:22some plastic safety eyes i'm using six millimeter eyes and if you want to embroider stripes onto your
02:31fish you'll need a yarn needle to do so all right let's get started on making it
02:41let's start off with round one for round one we're going to begin with a magic ring
02:46and in the ring insert six single crochets that's one oops sorry that's my slip knot actually and here's my
02:56first single crochet
02:57my second third fourth fifth and sixth
03:13after you insert those six stitches go ahead and pull your ring tight
03:19and we'll continue on with round two
03:23for round two you are going to increase all the way around so you're going to insert two single crochets
03:30in each stitch so in this very first one i'm going to put two that's one and two both in
03:39the same stitch
03:45increase and increase and we're going to repeat this all the way around
03:51increase
03:57increase
04:11here's my fourth increase
04:18my fifth increase
04:24and my sixth increase
04:28that will give you a total stitch count of 12 stitches
04:36and now we're ready to move on to round number three for round three you're going to single crochet three
04:43and then increase repeating that three times around so here's what it'll look like
04:50for that first repetition we're going to single crochet three times
04:55just one
04:57and in the next stitch two
05:00the next one
05:02three
05:05and then i'm going to increase
05:19now i'm going to repeat that all the way around
05:22again working three single crochets
05:42and the increase
05:48last repetition
06:08and that brings us to the end of the round with 15 total stitches now we're going to jump to
06:16round four
06:16for round number four you're going to single crochet four and then increase repeating that three times around
06:25i'll show you um the first repetition here
06:29that's one
06:31two
06:33three
06:35and four
06:38and now increase
06:45let's repeat that around two more times
06:56let's repeat that around two more times
07:18after you finish that sequence you're going to do rounds five and round six which is
07:24just to single crochet around no increasing no decreasing we're just doing straight rounds here
07:31so we're going to go ahead and um single crochet around and we'll meet back at the end of round
07:39six
07:54after you finish round six you should have this little dome shape and you will be ready to attach
08:00those plastic safety eyes
08:02i have one put in already i place them between rounds three to rounds four so counting down that's one
08:10two three and four
08:13right between three and four and i'm gonna put my two eyes um six millimeter eyes
08:20just across from each other so that my fish can have eyes on both sides of the head
08:24here's one two three and round four so just right between rounds three and four i'm going to insert
08:33this eye right over here
08:40and with these little ones um you can go ahead and just stick those backings right on
08:56and then you'll be ready to continue round number seven for round number seven you're going to go
09:03ahead and switch colors because now you're going to start working on the fish's body
09:08and for this you can have fun with different color combinations
09:13i have a kind of brick red that i'm using here and then a yellow a green a darker green
09:20and then i go back
09:21in the reverse order so this part is pretty um up to you you can go ahead and make your
09:29fish as long as
09:30you want or as short as you want as well and i'll be showing you how to go through with
09:36the first couple
09:37rounds and then the next few for the body will be exactly the same so why don't we start off
09:44by changing
09:45colors when i change colors i'm going to pull out half of my previous stitch
09:51and this will help with a clean color change so i'm going to insert my hook here
09:59and instead of pulling through and making that single crochet with this
10:04old color i'm going to grab the new color that i want to use
10:13and i'm gonna make a reverse um reverse colored fish for this one so i'm going to actually pull
10:22through that new color to finish off that previous single crochet like so and then with this new color
10:32i'm going to go ahead and crochet all the way around um and you're going to basically do this for
10:38um the next few rounds of the body for rounds seven to round 18 you're just going to single crochet
10:47around and what i'm also doing at the same time is switching colors every two rounds
10:55in rounds 19 and 20 i will be decreasing so i'll show you how that looks
11:01but for now we're just going to single crochet around and i'm choosing to do so for two rounds in
11:09this dark
11:10green color
11:13so here is one and then my next oops sorry i keep undoing these stitches because this yarn that
11:22i'm using is quite splitty and i am struggling to keep it together all right
11:47i do love the feel and the texture of this yarn but unfortunately the splittiness is not fun to work
11:56with
11:57um if you're using a larger hook like if you're making this um as clothing i think
12:07it would be easier but with these small hooks it's easy to just kind of separate the strands
12:14so i should have picked a better yarn to demo this project with sorry about that
12:20but i will let you know what type of yarn it is in case you are interested in using it
12:25or avoiding it this is the um yarn bee yarn comfy classic from hobby lobby yep i remembered correctly
12:38all right hobby lobby and it's a very soft yarn i quite like the um end result it's just unfortunately
12:46it's just unfortunately as i mentioned very very splitty
12:51so
13:02so
13:18all right so here's the first round of the um body done and i like to go around for two
13:25rounds in each
13:26color so i'm gonna keep with this dark green here and of course you're welcome to switch colors whenever
13:32you want um but if you would like to do it just like me you would switch after every two
13:40rounds of the same color
13:54all right um and again i'm just gonna keep going around remember to work down uh from round seven all
14:02the way to round 18 um by single crocheting around and we're gonna meet back at the end of round
14:1018
14:12here is round number 18 complete at this point you can go ahead and stuff the body if you'd like
14:19and we will actually keep stuffing as we work along for the next couple rounds
14:36after you've stuffed the body it's time to work on round 19 for round 19 you're going to single crochet
14:42four and then decrease three times around that will give you 15 stitches at the end of the round
14:49i've already started a little bit here so i single crocheted one two three and here is number four
15:02and then in the next stitch i'm going to decrease so it'll look like this you're going to basically
15:07single crochet two stitches together you're going to insert your hook into the um next stitch
15:15yarn over pull through a loop and then insert your hook into the following stitch yarn over pull through
15:22a loop you should have three loops on your hook and then we're going to yarn over and pull through
15:28all three loops for that decrease and we're going to keep going with this um sequence we're going to single
15:36crochet four here
15:37one two oops
15:46three
15:50and four
15:53and now i'm going to decrease again so pull through a loop in that first stitch pull through a loop
16:01in that
16:02second stitch then go through all three loops to finish off my decrease all right in the last repetition
16:11here let's do the four single crochets one two three and
16:22oops
16:26splitty yarn
16:28and four there we go and here is my decrease
16:38all right and that concludes round number 19. for round 20 we're going to do another round of
16:45decreases we'll single crochet three and then decrease three times a round let's go ahead and do that
16:58single crochet one
17:02two
17:09and three
17:12and now i'm going to decrease
17:19let's repeat that a second time here single crochet one
17:27two
17:30and three
17:34and then we're going to decrease
17:42and last time around single crochet one two
17:49and three
17:54and decrease in that last in the last two stitches
18:01and um i'm actually going to be switching colors for this next round we're going to go to the tail
18:08color and um remember if you want to stitch colors you want to finish off this last stitch
18:14using the new color so let me go ahead and grab that my tail color is the same color as
18:21the head
18:21i'm just matching it up here so i'm going to pull through with the new color
18:27um to finish off this last stitch
18:30for round 21 the tail you're simply going to decrease around
18:35so i'm going to go into this first um the first two stitches here
18:41and oops
18:45do a decrease
18:53then in the next two stitches
18:58decrease again
19:05and repeat that all the way through
19:36and i'm going to snip off this um previous color
19:40we'll no longer need it
19:42if you want to stuff your fish a little more at this point you can do so
19:47the hole is pretty small
19:50so you might need the end of a crochet hook
19:53to stuff um both stuffing and yarn in
20:11so now on to round 22 you're going to increase around in the front loops only
20:18and there is some flexibility here if you don't want to crochet in the front loops only it's okay
20:23to also crochet around in both loops like normal um but if you're crocheting in the front loops only
20:30remember that normally you go through both loops of a stitch the back loop is the one farther from you
20:37here and the front loop is the one closer to you which is in the front
20:43so let's go ahead and uh work around
20:47i'm going to insert my hook into that first front loop
20:53sorry my yarn just split again so let me go ahead and grab
20:57oops
20:59all right i think this is the last time i work with this yarn on video it is
21:06causing a lot of um unnecessary revisions
21:10okay so going into this front loop i'm going to increase by putting two stitches in the same loop
21:20now i'm going in the next front loop here and i'm going to increase again
21:26remember to work all the way around you're going to um go from 6
21:32to 12 stitches at the end of this round
21:51all right and there you have it with round 22 complete round 23 you're just going to single
21:59crochet and increase six times around that's going to bring you from 12 to 18 stitches
22:06let's go ahead and work back in our normal um the both loops
22:12so that's single crochet and then increase in that next stitch
22:24single crochet
22:37and increase
22:48And we'll meet back at the end of the round.
23:04Once you finish all the way around for round 23, what you'll do at this point is you're
23:10going to single crochet until you reach the very end of, or the very edge of the tail.
23:17And this part really depends on where you place your fish's eyes.
23:22Some of you, if you place them in different locations of the head, you are going to need
23:29fewer single crochets or more single crochets to get to that very end.
23:35All right, so right now, and it's because we want to make sure we can fold our fish's
23:40tail flat before stitching it together.
23:45As you can see here, it's stitched together.
23:49And you'll want the flat part of the tail to be aligned with the spine of the body.
23:58Okay.
23:59All right.
24:00So here, I'm folding my tail in half to see where the spine is.
24:08And that means I'm going to go down for one, two, three, four stitches.
24:14So I'm going to single crochet four.
24:16Oops.
24:17I may have miscounted.
24:18I didn't see that one there.
24:21Let me go all the way down to the edge of the tail.
24:23So that's one, two, three, four, and I'm thinking I probably need a fifth stitch, but let me double check.
24:43All right.
24:44Yep.
24:45One more stitch down here.
25:01And once you have that done, instead of continuing on, you're just going to either do one of two things.
25:10If you want to sew the tail shut, you can fasten off with a long tail, a yarn tail here,
25:16and then just pinch together the ends of the tail and sew them together with a running stitch.
25:22Or a whip stitch.
25:25If you want to keep this a completely no sew project, what you would do is slip stitch across the
25:32two layers in order to sort of sew it shut.
25:36So let me go ahead and show you how the no sew method is done.
25:40I'm going to insert my hook into both stitches.
25:46When I fold the two layers together, I'm going to insert my hook into both those layers and yarn over.
25:54Oops.
25:55Kind of tricky here because my yarn is so splitty.
26:01Sorry.
26:04I'm really struggling with this.
26:07All right.
26:08I recommend a non-splitty yarn for this Amigurumi or for Amigurumi in general.
26:16All right.
26:18And slip stitch here.
26:20I'm going to have to manually pull this over.
26:23Oh boy.
26:25All right.
26:26And now, going into the next two stitches, pull yarn through for a slip stitch.
26:43Let's keep working along here, stitch by stitch, getting those two layers closed up.
27:17And when you reach the last two stitches, you're just going to fasten off.
27:27With a yarn tail.
27:33If you want to embroider lines on your fish, you can do that by leaving a longer yarn tail.
27:41And you can go ahead and attach it to a yarn needle.
27:47And while you weave in this end, you can embroider those lines to your fish.
27:54Now, you also want to check to see where the top and the bottom of your fish would be.
27:59I decided to make the color change at the bottom because I don't want it to be too obvious on
28:07top.
28:08So, here is where the front of my fish would be.
28:13Or you could go on this side as well.
28:17But I'm going to go ahead and insert my yarn needle in and kind of weave in that end first.
28:27Oops.
28:29This is a mighty big needle.
28:31This is a mighty big needle, huh?
28:32I guess my stitches are too tight.
28:35Let me try and poke it there.
28:37There.
28:39Sorry.
28:39I needed some strength to get that in.
28:42Okay.
28:43There we go.
28:46So, let's see.
28:47You can go ahead and embroider those in.
28:49I'm going to just check for placement here.
28:51I kind of did it in this round.
28:56Oops.
29:05Oh, I'm just on the struggle bus here.
29:07Alright.
29:09I'm going to pull this up.
29:11I liked how my lines looked in this first one.
29:14So, I'm going to count.
29:15One, two, three.
29:16Oh, it's three rounds thick.
29:20So, one, two, three.
29:22I'm going to put it up here.
29:27And then find the matching stitch on the bottom.
29:42All right.
29:46So, here's the first stripe.
29:48And I'm going to go over one, two, three again for my second stripe.
30:11And one, two, three for my third stripe.
30:21And you are welcome to embroider stripes on both sides of your fish if you want.
30:29I'm going to embroider it in just one side.
30:32So, I'm going to go ahead and get ready to fasten this off now.
30:50And this project is a lot of fun to make because, as you can see, it is no sew.
30:56You can do it without, well, unless you want to embroider the little stripes on your fish.
31:02But you can do it pretty on the go.
31:05Feel free to be creative with your color choices.
31:08There are endless color combinations to explore.
31:11And I've had some of my followers mention that they want to crochet this with some catnip on the inside
31:18and give it to their kitties, which is such a cute idea.
31:22Just be sure that you're not using safety eyes for those.
31:26I would recommend leaving the eyes out or embroidering eyes very securely and tightly so that they don't get pulled
31:34out if they become a cat toy.
31:37Okay.
31:38Alright.
31:39Anyways, thanks for checking out my video tutorial.
31:44Hope you enjoyed making these with me.
31:46And happy crocheting!
31:48Bye now!
31:49Bye now!
