00:09hi friends today we'll be crocheting this cute turtle mug rug which is a quick and easy project
00:15it can be completely no sew though I will say this is one of the rare projects where sewing
00:20pieces on is easier than the no sew method so I do recommend sewing for beginners though I'll
00:27demonstrate how the no sew method is done here the free written pattern is available on my blog
00:33which is linked in the description box below so you can follow along with it anyhow I'll be using
00:41cotton yarn in this video so you can actually see the stitches since fur yarn in the original
00:47design is hard to see and demonstrate through video due to the different yarn weights the hook
00:52sizes will be different so be sure to take a look at the materials section next
01:12for the head we're going to start off with a magic ring in the magic ring you're going to insert

01:19single crochets use my slip knot to start and I'm going to put in one two three four five six
01:38seven and eight
01:43single crochets and then I'm going to tighten the ring now let's go ahead and proceed with round two
01:53for round two we're going to increase all the way around so going into that first single crochet here
02:00I'm going to insert two single crochets oops didn't quite put my hook into the right spot there we go
02:09so into that first single crochet I'm going to increase that's putting two single crochets in the same

04:20here so I'm just going around um we're doing straight rounds here we're just going to insert one single
04:28crochet in each stitch and let's go ahead and meet back when we are done with round number six
04:39six here I have round number six complete and we can move on to round seven for round seven we're

04:46to single crochet three and then decrease repeating that four times around let's go ahead and start we're
04:53going to single crochet three first that's one two and three single crochets and then we're going to decrease
05:02you can do a regular decrease or you can do an invisible decrease if you want i'm going to do
05:08an invisible
05:08one because using cotton yarn your stitches are very um as you can see the stitch definition is really clear
05:16here so doing an invisible decrease will make it um less obvious so to do an invisible decrease insert
05:25your hook into the first front loop of the next stitch then insert your hook into the second front loop
05:32of the next of the stitch after so we're going to crochet these two stitches together
05:40yarn over pull through both of those front loops yarn over pull through both of those loops and that makes
05:49a um an invisible decrease let's keep going and i'll show that again we're going to single crochet three
05:56one two and three and then we're going to do another invisible decrease we're going into the front
06:05loops of the next two stitches so into that first front loop and into that next front loop yarn over
06:12pull
06:12through both loops yarn over pull through both loops all right that's my second repetition let's do my third
06:20one two and this is my third single crochet and now i'm going to invisible decrease again
06:30inserting into just the front loops and pull through oops like so
06:40one two three and then we're going to decrease
06:59at this point you can go ahead and put in the plastic safety eyes i put in nine millimeter
07:05eyes between rounds five and six so counting from the very beginning that's one two three
07:12four five and six so right between five and six is where i stuck the eyes and i put them
07:19about eight
07:19stitches apart you can do eight or nine stitches i think both look pretty good um and you will want
07:27to use larger eyes if you're using bulkier weight yarn so for instance my original turtle made here with
07:33um bulky weight five yarn i used 12 millimeter eyes so it looks bigger here all right once you have
07:43the eyes
07:44in place go ahead and just put in the um backings for those now we're ready to continue with round
07:51eight
07:52for round eight we're going to single crochet two and then decrease repeating that four times around
07:57so here's what it'll look like first single crochet two one and two and then we're going to decrease here
08:09by stitching those next two stitches together
08:14let's repeat again so single crochet two one and two and decrease
08:29and repeating that all the way around
08:46now for round number nine what you'll do is single crochet and decrease all the way around
08:52we're going to repeat that four times and um once the hole starts getting smaller as you can see here
08:58it'll be a good time to put in the stuffing for your um turtle's head so let me just go
09:06ahead and um
09:07get that starting yarn tail in really tight it was coming a little undone here all right
09:16and let's go ahead and stuff the head
09:24here we're going to single crochet and decrease around
09:28here we're going to double crochet one and
09:30here we're going to double crochet one and one and one and one and one and two and one and
09:57one and
10:13now with this round complete we are almost there for this last round we're just going to be
10:20single crochet two and decreasing twice that'll give us six stitches at the end so let's go ahead
10:28and start single crochet two that's one and two and now I'm going to decrease and I'm just doing a
10:41regular decrease here because it gets pretty tricky to do invisible decreases when the hole gets small
10:48now last repetition two single crochets and here is my decrease
11:05all right and that's that for the turtle's head um you are going to either if you want to do
11:13the
11:13sewing version um fasten off with a long tail for sewing if you want to do the no sew version
11:20you
11:21don't have to fasten off with such a long tail you can fasten off with just a bit of a
11:25tail um to weave
11:27in later so I'm going to demonstrate the no sew version on video here so I'm just gonna fasten off
11:35with a bit of a tail that I'll weave in later but um if you feel more comfortable sewing the
11:42pieces on
11:43um you can just leave a long tail as mentioned earlier all right let's go ahead and make the
11:51flippers now for the flippers you are going to size up with your hook I'm using a five millimeter here
11:58I used a three point two five millimeter earlier for crocheting the head which required tight stitches
12:04um because that's the only piece that requires stuffing so there's that but um go ahead and size
12:12up um if you're using feels like bliss yarn from my original design I you would be using four millimeter
12:20um crochet hook for the head and you'll be using a six millimeter for the flippers uh shell
12:27and the tail so basically everything else is six millimeters now since I used um instead of four
12:35millimeter for the head I used a 3.25 I'm sizing up just to a five millimeter all right let's
12:43go ahead
12:44and um get started on the flippers here for the flippers we're going to begin with a magic ring
12:53and in the magic ring you are going to chain two
12:59so here's my slip knot and one in two chains then you're going to insert 12 double crochets into the
13:08um magic ring so let's do that one double crochet two
13:17two three four five five six seven eight nine ten
13:46eleven eleven and twelve
13:52now once you've finished inserting those double crochets you're going to pull on the
13:57yarn tail um that you're starting yarn tail to close up that magic ring
14:03and we're going to join with a slip stitch to the first double crochet
14:07so getting in there I'm going to make a slip stitch
14:14now for the um next round of the flippers round two we're going to fold this circle in half
14:21and we're going to be turning it into um the front flipper
14:28so folding it in half you're going to start off with a chain
14:35and then we're going to crochet those the front and the back stitches together
14:41so going into that front I'm also going to go out the back here
14:46see as you fold the circle together you'll have um it double layered
14:51so we're going to increase all the way across in that first stitch pair we're
14:57going to insert two single crochets now let's go into the next stitch pair going
15:05into the front and the back we're going to increase again
15:12and all the way across so putting two single crochets in each stitch pair
15:36all right when you finish the um the semicircle here you can go ahead and um fasten off with a
15:45long
15:45tail if you're going to sew it onto the shell if you plan to do it the no sew version
15:50um like what I'll demonstrate next you can fasten off with just a little bit of a tail
15:55not too much and that'll be enough we're going to weave in that tail later
16:03repeat these instructions for the second flipper
16:07now on to the back flippers again use the larger hook
16:11um for the back flippers and you're going to start off round one with a magic ring
16:17inside the magic ring you're going to chain two
16:24one and two chains then you're going to insert eight double crochets into that magic ring
16:30so here I'm going in for one two three four five six seven
16:56and eight and once that's done pull your ring tight you're going to want to insert a slip stitch into
17:06that first double crochet
17:13to join the round
17:18and that's that for round number two we're going to chain and then we're going to decrease all the
17:23way around then join with a slip stitch to the first uh decrease so going into the two stitches
17:31I'm just doing a regular decrease over here one decrease
17:40two decreases
17:48three and lastly four
17:59and now I'm going to join with a slip stitch to that first um stitch I made
18:13there we go and again you will want to fasten off uh with a long tail if you want to
18:19sew your
18:19flippers onto the shell if you don't want to sew on and you want to do it the no sew
18:25method that I'm
18:25showing you in a bit you can just go ahead and fasten off with a little bit of a tail
18:30which will be
18:31woven in later all right we're gonna make two um of these little flippers the back flippers and
18:41you can also pull that starting yarn tail in uh so it doesn't get confusing here
18:49the part where you decrease with those four stitches at the very end is a part that will be
18:55attached to the shell now it's time to crochet the shell I'm using the larger hook and some brown yarn
19:04for this part in a magic ring you're going to chain two and insert 12 double crochets so here I'm
19:12going to
19:12start off with a slip knot
19:16and now I can begin my chains
19:19one chain two chains and let's go in for 12 double crochets

20:03after you do your 12 double crochets you're going to tighten the magic ring

22:19so here's a look at round number three complete for round number four what you'll do is chain and
22:25then single crochet two increase repeating that around 12 times then joining with a slip stitch
22:31to the first single crochet now if you want to um if you do it that way first you are
22:37going to be sewing
22:38your um turtle's head and flippers onto the um last round but if you want to do it the no
22:46sew method
22:47um i'm going to show you um how to crochet the last round round number four while simultaneously joining
22:55all of these pieces
22:59here i've got the turtle's pieces ready to go as you can see the shell is the center piece and
23:06we're
23:06going to go ahead and attach the pieces to the shell and using a no sew method it is going
23:12to be
23:13easier to just sew them on to where you want it to go but if you want to do this
23:17new sew um
23:18method you can do it this way so i'm going to be single crocheting two and increasing all the way
23:26around in this round while doing that crocheting the pieces directly to the shell
23:32so each piece we're going to put it kind of upside down facing into the shell because after we crochet
23:39it together at the very edge it's going to be flipped over like so let me show you how that's
23:46done so for the first part here with the head i'm going to insert my hook into the first stitch
23:56and we're going to do single crochet
24:02then in the next pair of stitches single crochet in that next um stitch in the shell
24:16oops
24:23sorry picked up the wrong stitch there
24:41and then in the last pair of stitches we're going to single crochet in that next stitch
24:50and this is where we need to um increase actually so after you single crochet the head to um that
24:59last stitch we're just going to go next to it going into that same stitch and finishing with an
25:05increase we don't want to put the increased stitch inside of the head because that's going to
25:10um kind of make it imbalanced and make it look bulky
25:14now let's keep going so we're going to single crochet two
25:21and in this next stitch i'm going to attach the flippers
25:30and going in here
25:36one single crochet and i'm going to do the increase in the next single crochet of the flipper but going
25:44into that same stitch in the shell for my increase
25:50like so single crochet two
25:56increase
26:14so here's how it's looking so far
26:26and i'm going to attach the legs pretty soon
26:46and i'm going to attach the legs with or the back flipper sorry with two single crochets
26:53as you can see i'm placing it inwards um onto the shell

27:59we're going to go ahead and add in the second flipper there the second back flipper
28:05so holding it um facing into the shell go into the first stitch pair

29:20and then going into that next stitch
29:23go right back into the same
29:26same stitch for an increase
29:29and we'll keep going around single crochet two
29:35and an increase at the end
29:46finally you reach that last stitch we're just going to join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet

30:01we are going to fasten off and weave in all these ends right now
30:07now after you've weaved in all the ends you can go ahead and add the tail to your turtle
30:13i'm going to find a stitch between the back flippers
30:17so around here
30:19and then you're going to attach your yarn
30:23oops
30:25maybe here
30:27and the tail is going to take up one stitch of space
30:32to begin you're going to chain two
30:37then do a triple crochet in that same stitch
30:42so yearning over twice insert um hook into the same stitch
30:47yarn over pull through a loop we're going to go through two loops at a time

30:55and three
30:57then we're going to chain two
31:00and slip stitch all in that same stitch
31:07after you do that that is the tail and you can go ahead and weave in the or fasten off
31:14and weave in those ends
31:25all right and that's that you are all done with your cute little turtle
31:30as you can see you um can crochet it with a no sew
31:35way um or you can sew the flippers on if you'd like to adjust the position
31:39better um my turtle here was made with feels like bliss yarn which gives it a nice furry look
31:46um definitely very cute and this one i used cotton yarn so i could show you the stitches
31:52and how it looks as you crochet feels like bliss would be very difficult to actually
31:58see the stitches on camera so i hope it was helpful for you to see how the cotton one um
