Learn the crochet knit stitch step by step and turn a simple single crochet into a beautiful knit-like texture. This tutorial breaks down exactly where to insert your hook, showing the difference between a regular single crochet and the center insertion that creates the knit stitch, also known as the waistcoat stitch or split single crochet.

The stitch is demonstrated slowly and clearly so you can follow along while making baskets, home décor, or other sturdy crochet projects. It creates a dense, neat surface with little V shapes stacked on top of each other, giving finished pieces a polished handmade look. A larger hook is recommended to help with the tight texture of this stitch.

SEO: Perfect for crochet beginners, knit stitch tutorials, waistcoat stitch guides, and center single crochet projects. Ideal for anyone searching for crochet basket patterns, textured crochet stitches, and knit-like crochet techniques for home décor and sturdy handmade items.

00:00Hello and welcome to my knit stitch tutorial. I have a free pattern using the
00:06stitch called the Knit Stitch Basket on my website at www.sweetsofties.com. If you
00:15would like the pattern link please check out the link in the description box
00:19below. Before the video portion I'm going to quickly run through some photos to
00:25show you this stitch. It's exactly the same as a single crochet but the
00:31difference is where you insert your hook. The blue dot shows where you insert
00:37your hook for making a regular single crochet. If you insert your hook in
00:42between a stitch instead, which is where the pink dot is, that will make a knit
00:48stitch. So as you can see here this is a single crochet hook insertion.
00:55And this is a knit stitch hook insertion. So today I'm going to show you the knit
01:02stitch which I'm going to be using to make this basket and the free pattern
01:08will be available on my blog so check that out. So for the knit stitch what
01:15you're going to do is insert your hook right into the middle of a stitch. So
01:21instead of us going into the both loops here like say with a regular single
01:29crochet or a double crochet you're going to go into this little V you're actually
01:35going straight into the stitch below. So here I'm going to stick it in yarn over
01:43pull out and then finish it with a single crochet like normal just like so. Let me
01:52do it a few more times. So take your hook instead of going under the two loops go
01:59straight into the little V straight into the stitch. And there you go there's another. So as you can see
02:11when you start going into the stitch it's going to create little V shapes or a heart
02:17shapes if you want to call them that sitting right atop each other and that
02:22creates a really lovely knit knit look effect. And it's particularly nice for
02:31baskets or baskets or home decker and it's also quite a sturdy stitch. So what you're
02:39going to want to be aware of is you try and use a bigger hook in order to make sure
02:47you
02:48have enough space it's very very dense. So I'm going to do a few more again insert your hook into
02:57the V
02:58yarn over pull out single crochet insert your hook into the V yarn over pull out single crochet and one
