00:13Hello and welcome to Gangs All Here. This is our Monday episode reviewing the Jets' loss
00:17to the Las Vegas Raiders 38-33. We're here to break it down with our Jets beat writer
00:22Brian Costello as always on a Monday. They fall to 2-6 on the season. Things could not
00:28be more bleak when you look at this Jets team right now, but I am really interested to hear
00:34everything caused us to say. Mr. Costello, how are you doing today, buddy?
00:38I'm good, Ryan. How are you?
00:40I'm good. I'm good. It's nice that we are seeing this team put Jets fans in a spot of
00:50season's over and now we can focus on the draft.
00:54A little early, right? I wish they could have given us a little more season. I don't think
00:59you wanted that November 1st, you wanted to feel like the season was over, right? We talk
01:05about the holidays all the time. I was hoping they could get us to Thanksgiving, you know,
01:10and we'd still be talking about, you know, even if it was going to be a long shot of it
01:16being a season that they could do something. They could at least finish around 500. It'd
01:21be respectable and you'd feel have some hope going into 2027, but yeah, right now it's
01:28all about tank-a-thon.
01:30Sure is, especially when the Jets hold three of the top 10 picks currently as it stands after
01:35the games yesterday. And that'll be for future discussions when we get into that, but we still
01:40have to talk about this team and what happened on the field yesterday. Kaz, it's been said over
01:45and over, but this team continues to find new ways to lose football games, even after putting
01:49up over 400 yards of offense and giving up another 300 on defense. And despite scoring
01:56sick on the first six drives of the game, the Jets still lose this one. So now that you are
02:02almost 24 hours removed, how do you view this game?
02:08Yeah, inexcusable, Brian, and unbelievable, embarrassing, all the words you want to use. I mean,
02:14for the Jets to score in their first six possessions, I compared it to seeing Harry's
02:19comment, you know, in my column because, you know, there's been a lot of bad football in
02:24the last 16 years, but most of it has been bad offense. They've had some good defenses under
02:29Rex, under Bowles, under Salah. There was some good defenses. It's been bad offense. It's
02:34been bad quarterback play. It's been a lack of weapons. It's been bad offensive line. None
02:39of that wasn't the case yesterday. They played well on offense. They could have scored more
02:44touchdowns in the red zone. Like, there's no doubt about that. But this was just an abomination
02:50on defense. And against a Raiders team, that's not that good. Against a Raiders team that you don't
02:56have to be Bill Belichick to figure out that number 89 is where the ball's going. And you got to
03:00take
03:00him away and they didn't do that. You know, it's just hard to fathom. The third down penalties
03:09were brutal. Yeah. Do you agree with his assessment again today? Glenn referenced that in the presser
03:15this morning that the reason they lost is because of third down penalties. They had two of them.
03:19No. Yeah, they had two of them. They were bad. I don't think they're the whole reason they lost.
03:23I don't think that that's the biggest problem on defense right now. I think they don't have
03:26playmakers on defense. That's the biggest thing I look at, especially when David Bailey's not
03:30playing. I think he has the potential to be a playmaker and he's shown flashes of that this
03:36season. When he's not on the field, you know, there's not much going on. They didn't affect
03:41the quarterback, Carly at all. They're not good in coverage. You know, one interception in the last
03:4625 games is just inconceivable. They didn't even, you know, force the fumbles yesterday that we've
03:53seen them forced in past. So they did pretty good against the run, but I mean, the Raiders are a
03:58bad running team to begin with, but they, you know, you knew if you're kind of drawing up on
04:04the board, 89 is the number one target, 87 is the number two target, number four is the number
04:09three target in the passing game. And all of them had big plays against the Jets. And that's just
04:15tough. And I think, right. I know everyone wants to kill Aaron Glenn. I get it and make the jokes
04:19about
04:20the superpower. They're easy jokes to be made, but the players have to play better too. I mean,
04:26this wasn't just, this wasn't about the play calling to me. This was just about,
04:29they don't have the talent on that side of the ball. And this is kind of what I talked about
04:34in
04:34the summer and they played pretty well in the beginning of the year. I was surprised. And now
04:39I think you're, you're kind of seeing the real Jets defense. Well, I'll say this. And I read your
04:43column this morning on sports post sports plus you all should be subscribed to that already. If you want
04:48to follow Kaz along for his coverage on this Jets team, you know, I agree to an extent about the
04:53talent is not good. And especially when you don't have to Vondra sweat and David Bailey healthy for
04:59that game yesterday, it's, it impacts you and what you want to do. But I still think the fact that
05:03they
05:03had spent all that money in the off season on Demario Davis and Minka Fitzpatrick and Joseph
05:08Osai, who wasn't healthy as well yesterday and Kings and a barry, you'd expect them to be able to
05:14bottle and stop the one thing that you couldn't let beat you, which was Brock Bowers and mayor.
05:21And for some reason, this Jets team cannot cover the tight end. We saw it now on Dolchich and the
05:26tight ends this week, they killed you. They killed you in the past game and cause I I'm not sure
05:31if
05:31you'd saw, but I, I did some research after the game yesterday with Frankie and the post game show
05:36Aaron Glenn's defense in the last five losses. Do you know how much they're averaging in those five
05:42losses? Yeah. So I saw you at the three, three 90 or three 90 cause. Yeah. Yeah. I'm not excusing
05:49him Ryan at all. I do think scheme is part of the problem. Absolutely. But I think I've seen a
05:57lot
05:57of people just going blasting him and they're not blasting the players. Like they paid Demario Davis
06:02a lot of money. He's not playing that well. They're paying Minka Fitzpatrick a lot of money. He is not
06:07playing that well. How about the leadership comments from him yesterday too? Yeah, we can
06:12get into that. But I think if you really look at like if you're sitting there going, all right,
06:18who, who on this team would other teams want? There's not a lot of guys on the defense that
06:22I think other teams would be clamoring for. Right. I just, I don't, I don't see it. And I think,
06:29you know, Brownlee had pretty good coverage on the Bowers on the first touchdown and he got
06:35made an amazing play. Sherwood, Sherwood clearly messed up on the touchdown in the third quarter.
06:41You know, you saw Glenn getting after him on the sideline. I think Vilma pointed it out
06:45that he should have had Bowers on that play. He drifted too far. So yeah. Yeah. So there's
06:49mistakes being made by players. But yeah, it's, it's, the blame can go all around. I just want
06:56to remind people that the players deserve some too, not just the coach. So I hear you on the
07:00players part. And then I think my counter would be to you is if, if the players should be more,
07:06uh, you know, held responsible for these losses, the jets have lost a lot of one score games here
07:12cause. And, and I, that's where I would turn it a little bit is like, if the coach had put
07:17these
07:18guys in better, maybe it is comes down to players, just not making the plays. But do you think the
07:23coach should still be responsible? The fact that the jets have lost now was a five, six,
07:28one score games now this year already? Yeah. I think there's blame to go around. I think the
07:33coach definitely deserves some of it. I think, you know, the, the issues, it wasn't an issue this
07:37week, but obviously the two minute issues we've seen are on the coach. I think red zone issues fall
07:43on the coach, uh, in some regards, I think third down issues fall on the coach in some regards. So
07:48yeah, I'm not excusing him at all. Like they, and I'm not saying that I just think sometimes
07:54we get a little bit lost because it's easy to blame the coach and it's harder to blame all the
07:59players. And it's hard because we don't know exactly what we're looking at in terms of what
08:04their responsibilities are and things, but you know, how many times, you know, Brandon Stevens
08:09can call for holding in the end zone. Um, Brownlee had issues yesterday. AZ Thomas gave up the
08:15touchdown to, uh, AZ Thomas, Jalen Naylor, where he just, it was third and goal. If there's any play
08:21where he cannot take off, it's third and goal at the two yard line. I don't think he took
08:24the play. I think people are questioning his effort. I'm wondering was, because Brownlee
08:28was kind of underneath there, but he think Brownlee was going to drop there. And like,
08:32you know, I wouldn't question a player's effort. So I think he just messed up there. I think
08:37he, he read it wrong. Some, for some reason he jammed him, seemed like he jammed him and
08:40kind of released him thinking he had help inside and then realized the last second he didn't.
08:44But yeah, I mean, there's, there's very few players on this Jets defense that are playing
08:48well right now. Yeah. And, and the other thing I want to ask you is, is that from a defensive
08:55personnel standpoint, you're, you're, you're are limited to what you have on your roster.
08:59D'Angelo Ponds, one play yesterday, one snap on defense and Brownlee was benched last week
09:05for disciplinary reasons for missing team meetings. It seems like, and he went back into the starting
09:09lineup yesterday. I know Ponds is not a slot corner. I got it. But what you've gotten out
09:15of Brownlee thus far has been below average, AZ Thomas and Brandon Stevens are not locked down
09:21corners. Why is D'Angelo Ponds not playing in these games?
09:27Yeah, I don't know. I don't know. And it's a good question. It's one we need to ask Glenn later
09:32in the week. We had, you know, a short one today with him where we had to hit a lot
09:35of topics,
09:35but I think that's a topic for later in the week. Um, you know, I would, I'm guessing it's
09:41playbook related. Then we're this deep into a season with a rookie, not playing a second round
09:45pick. I have to think he's not picking up the position or the, or the defense quickly.
09:50I do think Brownlee provides a physicality that no one else on the defense gives them. I thought
09:55they missed that last week against the dolphins. It kind of stood out to me that they didn't have
09:59the violence that Brownlee brings. And I'm sure coaches like that. I'm sure that that's what they
10:05like about Brownlee. Now that comes with coverage issues and that comes with penalty issues because he
10:10gets those, but yeah, I'm with you. I'd like to see more ponds. I'd like to figure out a way
10:15to
10:15get him in there. And I know like cornerback is a position where the guys, if there's 70 plays in
10:21the game, the guy plays 70 plays. I don't think that's a rule though, Ryan, like, right. Like,
10:26can we, I don't know, maybe slip them in there for Brandon Stevens on a series, or maybe slip them
10:31in there for AZ Thomas on a series and let's see what he can do. I think you're reaching that
10:36point
10:36of a season now where you need to start thinking about evaluation for 2027. Yeah, certainly have
10:42to. And, and I think, you know, the question is on Woody Johnson of how you're going to evaluate
10:48this coach now, who is unfortunately five and 20 in his first 25 games cause the wins are just not
10:54there. I'm sure you've seen the PFF wins over expected. The jets are last. They have, they're
11:01expected to win more games than what they currently are compared to their PFF grade on the field.
11:07How, how do you think Woody, cause I saw your column on this too. How do you think Woody Johnson
11:12is feeling right now watching this field, this product on the field and another loss to a team
11:18that was in their weight class? Like you said. Yeah. I, he can't be happy, right? I saw him briefly
11:23after the game, getting into a golf cart to be taken, you know, away from the locker room to his
11:27car
11:28or whatever to a helicopter. I don't know where he was going, but he, he was in a, he was
11:32in a golf
11:33cart. Um, he can't be happy. I mean, I don't know how much it translated on TV, Ryan, but the,
11:42the way
11:43the Raiders fans took the building over yesterday was crazy. And like, it's something you see from
11:48the Steelers or the Cowboys and no one really else. And I mean, Olu jumping because the crowd noise was,
11:55it's pretty crazy. So that's humiliating. I'm sure Woody wasn't happy with that.
12:01You know, he, he, he can't be happy right now. I obviously we haven't heard from him or anything,
12:06but I think he's got to be incredibly frustrated and you know, he tried, he's tried all these
12:13different ways to hire coaches and nothing's worked. So I imagine he's extremely frustrated
12:18right now. I hear him. He, I hear you that he could be frustrated about this. And I think,
12:24you know, where I'm going with this, we're frustrated at just as well. And I think that's
12:27why fans are not going to show up to the stadium to buy the product, to watch the product. Cause
12:31why would I spend my hard earned money to watch a team just that continues to find new ways to
12:37lose
12:37football games and a coach that just does not seem to understand how to win football games.
12:42And that's ultimately what's going to be the, the indictment for him, uh, and his career cause,
12:46because I heard, you know, him respond today about the wins are really, what's going to ultimately
12:51determine your, your, how long you can be a coach here in the league. And I think it's a,
12:57it's a weird tone from yesterday after the game. And I'm curious to hear you, you discuss this
13:03to, to point out that you thought the good things you did yesterday is you handled the end of end
13:07of
13:07first half situation. And, and, and Francesca had a great rant on it. It's like, those are elementary
13:13things that we criticize you on because you can't handle them. And you're coming out and saying,
13:18that's a positive after you're off your defense gave up almost 350 yards again, and you blew
13:23a big lead in that game. I don't know. Cause it just feels very off with him.
13:30Yeah. I've been shocked at how he kind of doesn't have a feel for what people want to hear after
13:35games. Cause, um, and also right. I wrote this in my, my rewind that I do on some on Monday
13:41mornings,
13:43you know, last year he was so defiant and I know he got criticized for that. I get it,
13:48but I don't know. I'd like to see a little bit of that right now. Like, you know, he, he
13:53seems to
13:54have kind of accepted that this is how it's going. And, um, you'd like it. Like Rex was very good
14:02at
14:02this. Rex would come out after bad losses and swear and curse. And, you know, he wouldn't call guys
14:08out, but he would kind of just promise to fix it, but he wasn't, it wasn't as Pollyanna as it's
14:13coming across from Glenn. And, uh, I think I'd like to see a little fire from him after a loss
14:19like that. I'd like to see him be pissed off that they lost that game. Uh, and yeah, I agree
14:24with
14:24you. You have to be praising, you know, I think the offensive praise is fine. They played pretty
14:29well, but I wouldn't be pointing out all the things we did well in the game that we just lost.
14:33Yeah. And combine that with the sideline antics we've seen with the referees and the memes that
14:38he continuously gives to all of us Jets fans. When we watch these games, it's just.
14:44Yeah. I mean, look, the sideline stuff, right? My opinion on that is coaches can't win. Right.
14:49Like, cause Sal was Sal was too stoic. You know, now Glenn is doing too much. It's the bottom
14:56line is if you're losing games, whatever the coach does, pisses you off. Right. So like if
15:02the coach, I've never seen a coach try to give a high five to a, to a referee though. You
15:06know what I
15:06mean? Yeah. I feel like I've seen like quarterbacks do that kind of stuff though. And they get like,
15:12they get prey, like holding the challenge flag like this in front of the referee, but I, I think he
15:18should be himself on the sideline. I think it's fine. I think if he's winning games, you'd be
15:22celebrating that stuff. I think when you're losing games, your sideline behavior becomes,
15:26you know, a problem. It, it, yeah, it does. Um, look, we could, we continue to talk about Glenn
15:34and his future, but I think his, his fate seems sealed at this moment. We can get into that in
15:39future episodes. I want to talk about the offense with you because yesterday it exploded. They had
15:44a ton of explosive plays yesterday. Uh, the most at any, at, in any game this season by any team
15:50in
15:50the NFL, which is crazy. Um, what did you make of this offense and, and what are you most looking
15:57forward to seeing as it goes forward here? Yeah. I want to know how much it had to do with
16:02the
16:02Raiders. Yeah. Right. Cause I think if you, you trash the Jets talent on defense, that the Raiders
16:07have Max Crosby and then who's their second best player on defense. I don't know. Kobe Dean,
16:14maybe. I don't know. Like it's, it's not great. So not to take anything away from the Jets.
16:19They took care of business. They did what they had to do, but I'm curious how much that
16:23had to do with the Raiders yesterday. Can they do that against teams with better defenses,
16:26uh, down the stretch? Can they get it going? But I mean, look, another great performance
16:31from Braylon Allen, great performance from Mitchell. They got Garrett involved. Uh, I thought
16:37Gino played well until that last, you know, that, whatever that Hail Mary thing was at the
16:42end of the game. Um, so a lot to build on there. Two of six in the red zone is
16:47where I would
16:48go and you question Glenn, not going forward on fourth and two on the first drive, fourth
16:54and three, I think it was the first drive. Do you question him on the second drive where
16:58he kicked it from the 17, you know, maybe they end up with touchdowns if he goes for it
17:02in those situations and the red zone numbers look better. But right now they're the worst
17:06red zone team in football. Um, so that's something they got to clean up.
17:09Yeah. It clean up. And it's like you said, it's the worst in football, but like I, we were
17:15talking about last week, they have no problem moving the ball between the twenties. It is
17:18when it gets to crunch time by end of the first half and end of game. And then in the
17:22tight situations where it's third and short, fourth and short, or in the red zone, they
17:27just struggle right now as a unit. And that stinks because I think you would agree cause
17:32they have the personnel on the field. You would think to win those, those matchups and win
17:37those situations. Yeah. And there's a lot of talent on the field right now. We've seen it.
17:42We've seen Sadiq have game. We've seen Cooper have games. And now we've seen Mitchell have games,
17:46have a game. So there's, there's a lot of guys. Braylon's playing excellent. Um, where does that
17:51go? You got to figure it out. What's that? Where does that go with Braylon and Brees? Cause
17:56there's two things here. There's two things to discuss with the Braylon Brees thing.
17:59First being if Brees is back this week, how does he mix in with Braylon? Who's been arguably the
18:06best running back in football the last three weeks? So I'd say this, I think Braylon will
18:11get an injury report on Wednesday. Braylon did not look good to me after the game last night.
18:16Uh, he, if you know, he, the one time he came up, he left the game, he came back in,
18:21I think
18:21adrenaline carry on the rest of the way, but in the locker room, he was moving really slow.
18:26It would not shock me if we, uh, when we show up Wednesday and Braylon's not practicing.
18:31So maybe he has a reduced role this week. It frees his back, or maybe he's, they, they hold
18:35him out to give him a week to recover. Cause remember he was dealing with Yanko last week
18:38in practice. He didn't practice last Wednesday with the ankle. So they might be able to push
18:44it. They might be able to kick the cam down the road for a week. The question to me is
18:48the trade them, uh, Brees being him, uh, and what can you get for him? What would you move
18:54him for? I mean, they just gave him a contract. So I wouldn't think teams are going to be lining
18:58up to just to give them, you know, premium picks for him. Uh, so are you willing to trade
19:05him for a fourth round pick? No, I, I think you can get a third for him though. There's
19:10enough teams out there that need running backs. He's under contract. Like you said, I mean,
19:15that's the question. I think, I think I would agree. I would move him for a third round pick.
19:19I'm not sure you get him for it. I'm not sure you get a third round pick for him. Um,
19:23he's
19:24got to play Sunday so teams can see he's healthy, I think in order to move them. But,
19:28um, you would risk that you would risk the re-injury. I would, I think team, I think if
19:33I'm trading for him, I'm like, Hey, I need to see if this guy can run. Right. No one's
19:38seen him run for five weeks. So I want to see that he's okay. That the quad isn't going
19:43to be an issue, you know, taking him. Uh, yeah, I would, I would risk that. So is it, is
19:48a BS on Aaron Glenn's part saying we want to keep our best players or they actually, you
19:52think they could be. I mean, look, they traded sauce and Quinn last year where those, those
19:58were pretty good players. I know sauces that there's, there's a lot of people who don't
20:03like sauce right now, but he was one of the better players and, uh, they got a deal that
20:07they couldn't refuse. So I think it's the same thing. I think if, if someone calls up and
20:11gives them a trade that they feel like is super value for breeze, they, they would have to
20:16do it. Um, anyone else you think that could get moved? Will McDonald had a sack
20:22yesterday. Uh, yeah. Does he get moved? Do they, do they think about Minka Fitzpatrick
20:28and, and Demario Davis, the veterans, or is this just going to be a very quiet deadline
20:32for the jets? I mean, I don't think you could trade Minka or Demario with those contracts
20:35to be honest with you. Uh, well, it was an interesting one. I think that's the one that
20:40you debate. What, what, what do you get for him? They don't have a lot of depth at that
20:45position. You know, like who knows what's going on aside was running on the side field
20:49last week. So maybe he's coming back soon. I would think Bailey will be okay, but do
20:54you, do you risk moving him? That's a decision. That's kind of like a, where are we going
21:00as a team this year decision? Do you want it? Are you still trying to put your best team
21:04out there or are you waving the white flag and saying, you know, well, I mean, Glenn,
21:10Glenn, not gonna be like, Hey, let's trade all our players away. I don't care if we lose
21:13them. I mean, there is the fact that you have to send a message to the, there's 53 guys in
21:18the locker room. And last year, the Jets sent the message we're giving up and you saw what
21:22that looked like in the last five weeks. And it's tough and it's tough on them. It's tough
21:26for guys like Garrett Wilson or now you're teaching David Bailey that as a rookie, like
21:32that we talk about all the time, the frustration of losing in the Jets locker room. Well, if the
21:37organization tells them, you know what guys were two and six, maybe they're two and seven
21:42after Sunday, we're just going to, we'd rather get that fourth round pick in 2028 than compete
21:48this year. That's a tough message for guys in the locker room who are, you're asking them
21:53to risk injury every week to play for you. So that's a decision that the organization
21:57has to make. And Darren Mugey has to make and, you know, in concert with it, with Woody
22:02Johnson.
22:03Well, I think this goes into that old debate of what's best for the organization right now.
22:08I understand what you're saying with the 53 on the, on the, on the, on the roster.
22:12There's a strong debate. I could fire the head coach right now and be better off the
22:15rest of this year, to be honest with you. So that's one thing from my, my standpoint.
22:19And the other thing I'll say is if Darren Mugey is to be the GM moving forward, I think
22:23he should be the one to make that call of where we are not competing. We're not going
22:28anywhere fast this year with this team. And if I can get a pick back for one of these
22:31players to help set us up for the future. Oh, and at the same time, it'll help us tank
22:36for that top pick, which I know they don't care and they don't do. And I know
22:40that, but at the end of the day, the Jets best, the, what they're, what's
22:44happening right now with this team where they're losing these close games is
22:47probably best for the future of this franchise cause because of that pick
22:51that can get taken rise higher and higher up the board.
22:54Yeah, I get that part. I think the question is, it's probably a map equation,
22:59Ryan, right? Like if I'm going to give you a fifth round pick for Will
23:04McDonald's, that's probably not going to have much impact for you going forward.
23:08Like our fifth round pick is going to be a flyer pick. So is it, is it more
23:12valuable to just keep Will McDonald around now and try to move them in the
23:16off season, just so you get through these last weeks with a respectable defense
23:21versus what, like what you had last, like you guys saw it last year, the Brady
23:24cook period of time. You want to live through that again?
23:27No, I hear you, but they're giving up 390 yards a game. That's not a respectable
23:30defense, even with the players they have on the field right now.
23:33Yeah. Yeah. I don't, you're going to have to hope you play better.
23:36This is against Kirk Cousins, Malik Willis, who was the Bears quarterback. I'm
23:41blanking now, but like all of these guys that they're giving up huge games to
23:45that it's not Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen, who you are facing in the next
23:49couple of weeks.
23:50Yes. Yeah. But they've been one sport games. Like you're like, it's not, it
23:53doesn't think about what it looked like last year in new Orleans and
23:57Jacksonville and against new England at home and Buffalo up there. Like it
24:01doesn't look like that right now. They, they, they are in these games,
24:06they're competing. If you start selling off players, you're going to be in a
24:10situation where you're giving up, you know, 45 points. Trevor Lawrence is going
24:15for seven touchdowns or whatever he did last year against you. So if you decide
24:20that that's what you want to do. Okay. But like, it's gotta be worth it. I think
24:25the sauce and quitting trades last year were worth it because of the, what,
24:28what they got back was so valuable. And that those are picks that you can turn
24:32the franchise around with. I'm not sure you're doing that for late round picks
24:36is my point.
24:38Ultimately, I know you've said over and over here that they're not going to move
24:42on from Aaron Glenn mid season. Have you changed your thinking at all after
24:46yesterday?
24:48I haven't, um, you know, how much worse can it get is a dangerous question
24:53to ask around the Jets. I mean, two and eight, two years in a row, if they lose
24:56these next two against the Bills and Chiefs in embarrassing fashion again, I
24:59guess, I guess the, the only like pressure point I see coming up is the by
25:03week coming up at the beginning of December that would maybe you do it then
25:06and say, all right, is this, this, let's just put the guy out of his misery and
25:11we'll start the search now. I guess that could happen, but I, I still, I think
25:14he's going to finish the year cause, uh, like you said, the beginning of this
25:19today, uh, can't believe we, we haven't even reached Thanksgiving and Christmas
25:23and the season just does not feel like it's going to go in a positive
25:27direction at all this year for the Jets. Um, thank you as always for hopping on
25:31here, giving us your analysis, and we're looking forward to catching up with
25:34you later this week, man.
25:36All right. Thanks, Ryan.
