India takes a monumental leap towards defence self-reliance as Defence Minister Rajnath Singh approves the execution model for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme. Under the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative, the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) will partner with both public and private sector companies on a competitive basis to develop India’s first 5th-generation stealth fighter jet. With a project cost of ₹15,000 crore, the AMCA will feature advanced stealth capabilities, super cruise, electronic warfare systems, and multi-role combat efficiency.
This game-changing initiative places India alongside the US, China, and Russia as it prepares to join the elite club of nations operating stealth fighter jets. The AMCA is designed for both the Indian Air Force and Navy, with a prototype expected by 2028–29 and full-scale production slated for 2032–33. It marks a strategic response to increasing regional tensions, especially with China and Pakistan, and addresses India’s urgent need to modernise its air fleet, which has shrunk to 31 squadrons against the required 42.
The newly approved industry partnership model levels the playing field for private firms like Tata, Adani, and L&T, challenging the monopoly of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). This move is expected to fast-track production timelines, reduce costs, and strengthen India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem.
Watch our exclusive coverage of this milestone development on Democratic News TV, with anchor Shibnath, as India moves closer to building its most advanced indigenous fighter jet under the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

03:35fighter aircraft designed for multi-role operations with capabilities ranging from air superiority and ground
03:43attack to electronic warfare and suppression of enemy air defenses seed the AMCA will play a pivotal role
03:51in future aerial combat scenarios the aircraft will feature a blend of stealth technologies including internal
03:58weapons base super cruise capability sensor fusion and advanced avionics
04:13based on the
04:43The MK1 variant will be powered by Usmate G F414 engines, while the MK2 is slated to
04:54feature a more powerful, indigenously developed engine in collaboration with foreign partners.
05:01Strategic Urgency and Timeline The approval comes in the aftermath of Operation
05:07Sindhur and heightened military tensions with Pakistan and China, both of whom are rapidly
05:13aggrading their air forces.
05:15China already operates the 5th generation J-20 and is reportedly set to export 40 J-35 fighters
05:22to Pakistan.
05:24Meanwhile, India's air combat fleet has dwindled to 31 squadrons, well below the sanctioned strength
05:31of 42.
05:33The urgency to modernize is reflected in the AMCA's deployment timeline.
05:38Prototype rollout 2028-29 Series production 2030-233
05:48Induction into IAF targeted by 2034 India's confidence in its indigenous capabilities has
05:56grown significantly after the success of the light combat aircraft LCA Tejas, which has
06:02now moved to more advanced versions like the LCA MK2 and the Tejas MK1A.
06:09The first flight of the MK2 variant is expected by 2026, with production starting in 2029.
06:18Taking the HAL Monopoly Traditionally, HAL has held a monopoly in military aircraft manufacturing.
06:26However, under the new execution model, HAL must compete with private firms either independently
06:33or in partnership to win AMCA contracts.
06:37This approach is intended to accelerate timelines and reduce over-reliance on a single entity,
06:43especially given the past delays in Tejas delivery attributed to supply chain issues from engine
06:49suppliers like General Electric.
06:52Sources within the Ministry of Defence indicate that HAL's experience gives it an edge, but
06:58it no longer enjoys automatic preference.
07:01HAL will have to fight it out, said one official.
07:06This competition could be transformative, signalling the start of serious private sector involvement
07:11in fighter aircraft manufacturing, international context and challenges.
07:18The move is not just about domestic capability, it's also strategic dhatarans.
07:24India is pursuing the AMCA program even as offers for fifth generation fighters have emerged
07:30from the US and Russia.
07:33The US has hinted at future F-35 sales, while Russia proposed joint production of the Su-57.
07:41However, India is choosing to invest in homegrown capability, reinforcing national sovereignty and
07:47reducing dependency.
07:50This step is also seen as a response to China's aggressive military posture.
07:55A recent US congressional report highlighted China's dominance in the Indo-Pacific, noting
08:01the presence of J-20s near the Indian border in Tibet.
08:06As China reportedly tests sixth generation aircraft, India's push for fifth generation readiness
08:11becomes even more critical.
08:14Future of Indian Air Power
08:16The AMCA program, developed in two phases, will eventually equip the Indian Air Force,
08:23IAF, with six squadrons, about 120 aircraft.
08:29The MK-1 units will serve as a technological foundation, while the MK-2 version brings more
08:35powerful engines and system upgrades.
08:38Additionally, the aircraft's swing-roll design, stealth profile and ability to conduct missions
08:44at high altitudes and supersonic speeds without afterburners will provide the IAF a critical
08:50edge in both offensive and defensive operations.

09:23The Defence Ministry views this as a once in a generation opportunity to realign the
09:39structure of India's aerospace industry, one that enables innovation, private enterprise
09:45and reduced foreign reliance, all while enhancing the combat readiness of the IAF.
09:52That's all for now from Democratic News TV.
09:55I'm Sheebnath and we'll continue to follow the AMCA programme closely as India charts
10:00a new path in aerospace defence.
10:04With indigenous innovation at the heart of national security, the skies ahead may well
10:09be guarded by fighters made in India.
10:12Stay tuned for more updates.
10:15Jai Hind!
