00:00The mother of two, Nurse Nakoya Bernard, was at her mentor drive Signal Hill home on Wednesday morning
00:07when she was attacked by her husband, Steve Paul, who violently chopped her to the neck, then set their home
00:14on fire.
00:14She ran to her uncle, Bernard Marshall, for help, tripping in blood.
00:19He explained he had just returned home from buying items for breakfast when he learned of the tragedy.
00:26He told us he was not surprised, as Mr. Paul had a bad temper.
00:56She pulled her inside and chopped her into the neck. That is when I took and carried her with my
01:00knee for safety.
01:02And then we told Leroy to take her to carry her to the hospital and to call the ambulance and
01:08that is what's happened so far.
01:12Leroy Fraser swung into action upon being notified that Bernard was injured.
01:17He came inside the road, and the mentor drivers came in here now and the smoke started getting more thicker.
01:24When the processor came in with my friends and them, he spoke up and went back up.
01:29When I went back up, my neighbor told me, well, not really my neighbor, but went around them.
01:34They went up and said, I saw my house on fire and also the lady got chopped.
01:40I said, all right, call me, run down, get my car, come back up, proceed to she, cover
01:46she up, head to the hospital.
01:48I wasn't studying anything more than to get she up here, because she was holding by she
01:52neck here, so I don't know if she get cashed up here already, so she could be bleeding
01:55up.
01:56Let's take off, run up the road, enter into the accidental emergency section in the back,
02:03your attendant come out, show them what's going on, and carry she inside.
02:07Fire officers assisted in rescuing 19-year-old special needs child, Malik John, who was
02:14trapped in the house by the flames, and later extinguished the fire before it could spread
02:20to other homes nearby.
02:22Sister of Steve Paul told the TV6 News she was shocked by the turn of events, as her brother,
02:28she said, was a quiet person.
02:31All I know, how I really feel, is I know my brother.
02:36He's very quiet, he don't really talk, so that is the whole thing about it.
02:40Were you surprised when you heard this is what happened?
02:42I was shocked.
02:44I was really, really shocked.
02:46Yeah.
02:46As I tell the other guy, I almost collapsed in work, this morning, when I get the news.
02:51Yeah.
02:52But still, he's my brother.
02:53I love my brother.
02:54You know him?
02:55Yeah.
02:55Or you loved him?
02:56Yeah.
02:57I love my brother.
02:57That's my brother.
02:58Yeah.
02:59And I go miss him.
03:00I will miss him.
03:02Yeah?
03:04I miss him bad.
03:07That's the thing about it.
03:08Did you know him to be any, exhibit any violent tendencies?
03:13Not at all.
03:14I never.
03:14I was saying, I never know.
03:16He told you that he was experiencing anything at all?
03:19Never.
03:20He don't really talk, I'm telling you.
03:22He don't really talk.
03:22He's a quiet person.
03:23He's a quiet person.
03:24You know?
03:25We heard that.
03:25So even though if he has problems, he even tell us.
03:28That is one thing.
03:29And I, if he and his wife, I find that it's going real good.
03:33Wherever she is, is where he is.
03:34So this was a shocking thing to me this morning.
03:37But how did Steve Paul die?
03:40Senior Superintendent of Police Ruddell Kirk told TV6 News
03:44the circumstances of his death is to be determined by an autopsy.
03:50Paul's charred remains was found on the living room floor of the house near the door.
03:55Officer Kirk is advising couples who may be experiencing issues in their relationship
04:01to seek help from the police special victims department.
04:05You're having problems that may seem to be volatile.
04:11There are things that you can do to be proactive.
04:16One of them, seek counseling.
04:19Right?
04:20Seek counseling.
04:22There are persons who are trained to deal with situations like this.
04:26Talk it out.
04:28Don't just have it bottled up inside.
04:31Because that sometimes leads to disaster.
04:34Right?
04:35And if you find that you're in a situation which is threatening, get the police involved early.
04:44Area representative for Signal Hill Patience Hill Nigel Tate told TV6 News
04:49he knew the couple very well and could not believe the tragedy had occurred.
04:55Mr. Tate is calling on couples who may be experiencing problems in their relationship
04:59to not choose violence as their first option.
05:24Tobago police are investigating.
