Crying herself to sleep in pain, is now the daily routine for Stephanie Jones, of Plymouth Tobago. Jones fell from a bench on the inter- island ferry the APT James, last Monday when she was about to disembark in Scarborough Tobago.
Elizabeth Williams spoke with the injured woman and has this report.
00:00Time going up on the bench now. I realize my two foot was on the bench but on entering the ambulance now when I go to putting my foot in the ambulance, the bench rock and apparently like the bench is faulty because they say the bench rocking and it's a faulty bench.
00:18All I could see myself is on the ground flat on my back on the ground on the boat.
00:30Miss Jones broke down in tears during our interview. She said she lay on the ground of the ferry close to five minutes before she was assisted.
00:40My left foot had been back and the right foot was more up underneath the door too where the ambulance is sliding up underneath it.
00:53I was on the ground for about approximately, you could say about five minutes or more, right? All I know, I realize, I heard the captain of the boat, which is a brown-skinned fat guy, he came to my rescue behind me.
01:13But to be honest with you, I don't know, like I was out of it.
01:18Miss Jones said she had to crawl to enter the ambulance on the vessel.
01:23They take a while to take me up and put me in the same cell ambulance, which I had was crawling on my bottom to get back in the ambulance because of my leg.
01:36They carried me straight out to the port and I happened to crawl out again and limp to the port.
01:47Miss Jones said she was taken to the Scarborough General Hospital for treatment. That took hours as she never left until Tuesday morning and has been in severe pain.
01:59She is now sleeping in her living room under medication, using her cane at home to move around.
02:06I experienced a headache. I experienced a back pain. Every minute I had to be waking up my daughter, waking up my granddaughter to get up to help me to get pain medication, to get water, to get this together.
02:19My little granddaughter stayed home from school Thursday and Friday.
02:24She stayed home with me because she had nobody here with me.
02:27TV6 News contacted the Port Authority on the matter and was told the Health and Safety Unit of the Port Authority is aware of the incident and previously contacted Miss Jones.
02:39The ambulance on the ferry is contracted to the Red Cross Society and a report is also to be made to NITCO.
02:48Since the incident occurred, the bench in question has been replaced.
