21:00you.
23:06They're used to being able to provide livelihoods for the people they work with and make a real
23:10difference with their customers.
23:12And now that's taken away from them.
23:15And the question is, well, how could you make the story of your next 10 years a better,
23:19more satisfying story than the last 10 or 20 when you were building your business and raising your
23:24family and it starts with getting really clear on who you are and who you are it's a three-legged
23:31stool the easiest most accessible leg of that stool is how your life should be lived not how
23:36i think it should be lived not how your mom thinks should be lived but you based on your dna
23:40and your
23:40beliefs and your experience that's your core values and when you live your life out of alignment with
23:44your core values life's a slog it's just exhausting working against yourself and when you live your
23:50life in alignment with your core values even if you have a high degree of intense activity and you
23:56shed it's called the life of full engagement it just feels effortless it feels meaningful it feels
24:01joyful and so says me those are the measures of success worth having in life the next leg of that
24:06stool is why your life should be lived what's your purpose and same thing when you live your life out
24:11of alignment with your purpose even if you're doing what you love even if you're doing what you're great
24:14at even if you're conventionally successful making money beautiful spouse beautiful house all that
24:18sort of stuff it just feels empty and when you live your life in alignment with your purpose you just
24:24feel like yes this is this was a great day this is uh this is what makes life for living
24:30and your how
24:30and your why they point a finger in the direction of your what what was i born to do what's
24:35my genius
24:35what should i actually be doing with my hours my days my weeks and when you figure that out it's
24:41just
24:42really clear the path forward again more valuable information now if i can be in somebody else's
24:52shoes that has a business they sold a business and then they're now they're retired um i don't want
25:00to sell my business um but i will tell you that if they say laren what what are you doing
25:07in your
25:07retirement are you are you happy are you fulfilled is everything going where it should be and my answer
25:13is absolutely for me i'm traveling the world i'm traveling the world i'm still coaching i'm still
25:27doing things from the beachfront and i'm enjoying life yeah i will find something to do trust and believe
25:34ladies and gentlemen if you've worked a nine to five job and you know that that is not your end
25:39all be all trust and believe that the day that you don't have to go there again i will find
25:44something
25:45to do and i i think it's so interesting because even even my parents and people that i um have
25:52spoken
25:53to you're absolutely right um when they retire sometimes they they wish that they can go back to work
26:00and i just don't get it i don't understand it like like find trust i'll find something to do yeah
26:05well
26:06it doesn't have to be work and i'll share two examples so you know um you know only about a
26:11quarter of the people i work with have sold their business most are like actively uh you know in it
26:15but um uh you know two people one uh he was in the uh like food bar business you know
26:21like clip
26:22bars stuff like that and he he did not want to start another business buy another business uh you know
26:29work for a full-time job again but he had all this knowledge he was a very charitable person he
26:34loved
26:34to travel and what he landed on was he started this uh uh non-profit called mother foods where he
26:45travels the world usually to you know poor developing countries i mean it's an advanced team
26:49finding about a dozen women who want to start their own businesses and you know i don't know if you
26:56could see my screen just went blank all of a sudden i can still see him okay now i'm back
27:01there about
27:01that yeah yeah he um you know he sends an advanced team and uh he travels to guatemala or morocco
27:09or
27:09wherever and he spends 10 days and he teaches these women how to make a food bar business and he
27:17does it
27:17four times a year and it's tremendously satisfying and it uh just creates like structure to his year and he
27:24just loves doing it another person sold his business he was young he was in his mid 40s
27:30and everyone around and told him like ah like you cannot retire you need to have so much to offer
27:37you need to keep uh you know start another business and for seven years he looked for uh some business
27:44that he could invest in you know that he could um and that is actively you know to be uh
27:48you know be a
27:48manager and he looked at maybe 50 deals and there was always something wrong with one of them and he
27:54never invested in any of them now of course there was not something wrong with all 50. he just didn't
27:58want to do it and when we started working together and to find his purpose his why statement and this
28:03was five six years ago so it's not exact but it was something along the lines of to use my
28:09creativity
28:10resources to create lasting fun memories for the people i care about now this person was on when
28:20he realizes what actually wanted to do he's like yeah i don't want to do that again like i want
28:23to
28:24travel and i want to play golf and i want to do all these other things but he was on
28:27a lot of
28:27charitable boards and he here in chicago he was on the board of michael reese uh um children's hospital
28:33helping expand health care for uh you know for uh um uh kids who need it we didn't have health
28:39insurance
28:40now it's a very important work and he was working with really smart dedicated people it was like a
28:45really good board experience and it was okay like it didn't light him up his purpose is to use his
28:52creativity to create fun lasting memories if you if you're interested in that space don't be on the
28:59board of michael reese children's hospital you should be on the board of make a wish you should be
29:04getting lifelong memories for you know for kids you know who uh you know are involved in the in the
29:11medical system the difference between merely doing what you love and are great at versus doing what
29:17you were born for it's just night and day now now i have a question you're helping uh so many
29:24people
29:25uh figure out their purpose figure out their why um how did you figure out your purpose and your why
29:32um what was that um i want to say life-changing point for you when did you realize that you
29:41know
29:42i'm not doing this anymore this is what i want to do yeah so i am a personal growth athlete
29:47i am always
29:49looking for ways to stretch myself physically emotionally spiritually intellectually relationally
29:56and you know i've read over 3 000 books and my genius is to take difficult to understand concepts
30:02and to turn them into simple to understand easy to apply processes and you may have heard of a
30:09a guy named simon sinek he's a famous author he's has a very famous ted talk that's been seen over
30:1450
30:14million times called start with why and i met simon a couple times um even before he was famous and
30:20he is so inspirational and i remember reading his book first start start with why and then this uh
30:28a second book find your why and just thinking that was really inspirational i have no idea how to do
30:36this all the instructions were in the book but good luck finding your why if you know reading seven
30:44books books so i read the book find your why a second time and then a third time and i
30:50took just
30:5010 pages of notes and i just tried to distill it into an easy to understand simple to apply process
30:58that
30:58anyone could follow and uh you know it took 10 or 15 hours that's my uh uh you know that
31:05that's uh um
31:06that's what i do i dedicate myself to this stuff to kind of wrestle it into something that's easy to
31:11understand but uh you know there's a simple worksheet and if you spend an hour or two on
31:16your own and you spend another hour or two with me i'll draw your why out of you but the
31:20process
31:21in a nutshell is your why is hidden in your stories stories of your life that have the greatest
31:28emotional amplitude um highest and lowest the ones that really resonate it's usually because they
31:37resonate with your purpose sometimes with a value but uh often with your purpose like that was a
31:43really great day that was a time when my life was forever changed that was a day at work where
31:49coming
31:49home i would have thought like oh wow that was fantastic i would have done that for free
31:54the negative stories are also equally useful they're violations your worst day at work the one that you
32:01never ever want to experience again the worst day of your life where you just felt like let's fall
32:07like gut punch like oh my god that was horrible these are violations and once you have 5 10 15
32:16stories
32:17you could start to look for the themes what was the contribution either i made or the people made to
32:22me what was the impact of that contribution or the feelings i had when that happened and you start to
32:27see patterns that just like oh that that thing happened in three or four or five six of my stories
32:33these are the themes that call out like yes that's who i am and then once you have those one
32:39or two
32:40themes then you put it into a very specific format there's lots of definitions why but this is
32:44the one i like because it's just such a useful guide to living your life it's to make the contribution
32:52that i just feel compelled to make because that's who i am and i do it at home
32:55and learn i do it with for work and i do with my friends to make the contribution that you
33:02feel
33:02just compelled to make because that's who i am so that i make the impact that makes the world the
33:08way
33:08that it should be for me my purpose is to untangle the clutter obscuring our best most authentic selves
33:16so that we can see a clear path to a life and business that feels more effortless more meaningful
33:21more joyous and again it's like i don't turn this off this is i do this with my family i
33:28do it with
33:28my wife my kid it's what i do for a living it's what i do for my friends this is
33:32the only kind of
33:32conversation i know how to have well then that definitely is your purpose right there yeah i i love
33:40the violation part i love that conversation about the violations you know you said how many would you have
33:45five ten and then you will start to realize um because this happened with me is what role did i
33:54play in this and a lot of i've been doing a lot of study and a lot of times these
34:00violations and these
34:01things happen in these repeat patterns happen these same narcissist type of people show up in your world
34:08or whatever the case may be because you've abandoned yourself you've abandoned yourself your true authentic
34:14self by putting yourself in these situations or doing something that's not who you are doing
34:21something that somebody else is following behind somebody else that's not who you are so therefore
34:27uh god universe however you take it shows up and says okay so again you did not learn your lesson
34:33because this is not what i made you to be or do so since you are not following the path
34:39that i have chosen
34:41for you now now we're going to bring some more violations and i like that conversation i like
34:46that talk life is a curriculum perfectly designed to work out god's plan for you all we need to do
34:52is
34:52pay attention listen ask what is it that i need to learn who is it i need to be what
34:58is the action i need
34:59to take and like you said if you don't learn that lesson you will have plenty of opportunities to learn
35:04it again um and you could stop suffering anytime you want just by engaging with it and learning it
35:11okay so now we're in a flow state here i love this so now someone who makes a change we
35:17spoke about
35:17change today someone says okay that's it i'm gonna make a change i'm tired of these violations going
35:23on i i feel like i know what my purpose is this is what i want to do yeah and
35:28then all of a sudden
35:28they start to go on this path where they're making some steps forward but then resistance
35:35comes and shows up what type of advice do you have for that person who might be going through
35:40some resistance because if they're not mentally disciplined enough to continue to push forward
35:45and push path they can turn around and re revert back to the person that they were before yeah so
35:51first i want to i just want to challenge the premise of that question it's not all about discipline
35:56our conscious minds are like an ant riding the elephant of our subconscious and the ant cannot
36:03control the elephant through force of will it's impossible the most the ant can do is say hey look
36:08over there and hope that the big dummy turns his head and wants to go in that direction
36:14i'll tell you a story you know when uh when i was 28 years old i was at a conference
36:20for
36:20uh entrepreneurs i've gone every year for 25 years and i um i went there because i wanted to learn
36:28i
36:28went there because i want to meet people and i'm extremely introverted and i did find you know during
36:34the speakers and all that sort of stuff but uh the second day of the second night was uh unstructured
36:39social time open open bar i don't drink that's introvert kryptonite i was trying to have conversations
36:46all these superficial conversations with these people who i wanted to know who wanted to get to
36:49know me i just felt like all these conversations buzzing in my ears it was totally sensory overload
36:55and at 8 p.m i just ran out of there and i went into bed i was alone in
36:59bed just thinking what's wrong
37:00with me like i came here to meet these people like they want to know me i want to know
37:04them i'm the only
37:06one who's here alone in bed at 8 p.m so i finished the conference went uh back home and
37:14i talked to
37:14my extrovert friends you know so like how do i how do i do this and i did what any
37:19normal person would
37:19do and i read six books on how to connect with people in small talk and stuff like that and
37:24it
37:24helped a little it only helped a little there because that wasn't the problem now it took me another
37:2912 13 years to learn this but um another conference and this beautiful exercise and it's
37:35called competing commitments the ants commitment my conscious mind's commitment was that i was
37:42committed to having deep authentic relationships with people okay that's pretty good next question
37:49what are all the things that i do that are cross purposes with this how do i sabotage myself i
37:54made
37:54a list 10 15 things people ask me what i'm thinking and i don't tell them people ask me how
37:59i'm feeling
37:59and i say fine uh we would eat at these uh long communal tables and i would just climb up
38:04i wouldn't
38:05think of anything to say at all sometimes people would try to actually engage with me and i would
38:10be unfriendly i'd be rude and i would push them away made a list of these 115 things it's like
38:16having
38:17one foot on the gas and one foot on the brake next question well someone who does these things what
38:22else
38:23might they be committed to something subconscious self-protective and i realized that i was committed to
38:29not letting anybody know who i was or what i thought or what i felt well that makes perfect sense
38:35i
38:35didn't want to be committed to that it was kind of a like it was something i never would have
38:39chosen
38:39it was subconscious but of course i do those behaviors because i'm committed to pushing people
38:44away well the next question is then what's a belief what's an assumption about myself or the world
38:51that makes that competing commitment a matter of life and death and i realized that i was committed to
38:56not letting anybody know who i really was or what i thought or what i felt because if i did
39:00they wouldn't like it they would use that information to hurt me and i'd feel terrible
39:04about myself now when i was eight years old that was a perfectly accurate world view that's exactly
39:09the family that i grew up in but as a 28 year old entrepreneur at a conference where everyone wanted
39:14to
39:14get to know me and i wanted to get to know everyone else it was absurd but it's almost never
39:18enough to say
39:20jonathan that's stupid you know stop believing that it doesn't work that way um we need to get
39:26the elephant to turn its head the elephant doesn't respond to just tell you know just logic and saying
39:32like that's that's silly stop doing that so what do we do we run tests of the validity of the
39:39belief
39:40and you start with something that's very low risk that it blows up in your face doesn't matter
39:45so i've been in a forum group of other business leaders since i was 20 uh 27 years old that's
39:50where i experiment that's where i you know do these kinds of things and i told them what i was
39:54going
39:54to do and they would ask me what i thought and i would tell them and they'd ask me how
39:59i felt and
40:00i tell them and over the course of a few months i took higher stakes and higher stakes tests each
40:06time
40:06getting the elephant to look and saying like is that true or where is it true is it contextually true
40:11it's
40:11like it's never true that you tell someone you trust somebody real stuff and they they don't always
40:16say that's so awesome i mean usually they do and over the course of a few months as i you
40:21know shine
40:22the light on the belief it's grip loosened and then all those self-saf all the self-sabotaging
40:30all those self-sabotaging behaviors they all just effortlessly fell away because there was no reason to
40:35do them anymore and i'm still an introvert i prefer one-on-one but when i'm in a group and
40:41i'm
40:41with strangers and i can roll it out and i can roll it back in and i could tell this
40:46story to
40:47someone i barely know until all the people who are listening who i've never met and there's no risk to
40:51it because it's just the belief doesn't uh power it anymore and now there's just a foot on the gas
40:58not
40:58one on the brake so that's the answer wow that's that's that's amazing i like that get the elephant to
41:05turn the head and i might be um on a wrong path i might don't want to take it too
41:13deep and derail this
41:14conversation but could that be the difference or a correlation with the uh conscious and subconscious
41:22mind yeah so in our subconscious is there to protect us well more accurately it's there to protect itself
41:30and it um you know there's so many stories i could share you know there's a woman i i coached
41:37who came to me for regular business coaching she was a serial entrepreneur it was her third business
41:43she was 50 years old she'd reached this level of success she had 15 16 employees and her business was
41:49a prison like she was working 15 16 hour days never took a day off nothing could happen in this
41:54company
41:54without her micro involvement and after a couple months of again one step forward one step back
42:01because she was trying really hard you know i'm like i think we need to do this exercise and i
42:06asked
42:06her what she was committed to and with that in just an instant she's like i'm committed to my business
42:10scaling without my micro involvement i'm like all right like let's make a list of all the things that
42:15you do that are across purposes with that and you know she didn't pay a market wage so she couldn't
42:20attract eight players she'd love to hire what she called birds with broken wings you know people she just
42:24know a little bit of you know help and support they could just uh you know fly you know people
42:30would come to her with a design and it wouldn't be perfect and she would just take it over and
42:34fix it
42:34herself instead of giving feedback like all right same question so someone who does all that what
42:41else might they be committed to and she realized that she was committed to not asking not depending on
42:47anyone she was committed to not depending on anyone all right what's the belief and again just
42:52instantly knew she was committed to not depending on anyone because if she did they would betray her
43:00and she felt awful and again we did these tests we're like ask your husband to take out the garbage
43:07see
43:08what happens ask your ask your assistant to order you lunch and not tell you what it is like depend
43:14on
43:14someone see what happens and she started to make a lot of progress and i'll never forget this we had
43:20a
43:21you know we had a call a few weeks later and it was just a terrible day we had a
43:263 p.m call she
43:27hadn't had time all day to go to the bathroom she hadn't had time to eat she was like she
43:32was so angry
43:33she's like ah like these little people they can't do anything and i'm like i calmed her down and like
43:37go to the bathroom eat a bagel she came back and i asked her like are you committed to your
43:44company
43:46scaling without your micro involvement are you committed to not depending on anyone
43:50she's like i'm committed to scaling my business i'm like all right well you know what to do
43:56and you know just that day she committed to eight things and she committed to giving people feedback
44:00she committed to paying the market wage committed to all these things lauren two months later this
44:05woman who was working 15 16 hour days she took a three-month sabbatical candidate it's not a matter of
44:14willpower the ants cannot push the elephant they take a step but if your subconscious mind
44:24has its hooks in you and it's saying don't do that it's scary and it's dangerous
44:29no amount of self um self-discipline is ever going to get you over the way
44:36that's powerful that's powerful and that's where you come into play that's where
44:44reprogramming your mind um is so powerful and so needed because whatever you're doing
44:51if you don't focus on healing and focus on rewiring um it's just going to be null and void so
44:59yeah yeah
45:01well i was going to say you know our experience of life it happens between our ears you know everything
45:07that's happening out there we can't perceive it all there's this flaw in human perception that we cannot
45:14see the world in all of its complexity in all its complexity at best we have this pinprick view of
45:19reality at worst we have a total distortion but if it's true that this pinprick view of reality
45:27is just part of it and i'm not saying it's wrong but if this pinprick view of reality is causing
45:33you
45:33stress and suffering well this one over here it's equally true and this one maybe brings you peace and
45:40joy and what we tend to focus on tends to expand yeah and you know i'll tell you another story
45:46i was
45:47i was working with a client he was in his early 50s and he started having these fainting spells
45:52and he saw a doctor and it was a it was a blood pressure issue and you know i talked
45:56to him uh you
45:57know he just started this medication and like lifelong medication for uh you know high blood pressure
46:02and he's just like ah like this is terrible like i'm i'm getting old it's the beginning of the end
46:08i said maybe yeah i'm not saying this isn't true like you are on this lifelong medication and you
46:15know like you certainly have this health issue you're a man of a certain age but is there another
46:20interpretation of the facts that you find more pleasing that's equally true and i said well tell
46:26me all the facts and it's like well you know i'm 53 years old i had these fainting spells i'm
46:32you know
46:32i have this lifelong medication okay what else might be true what's another interpretation
46:37of these facts and we came up with five six seven uh alternative explanations for the same
46:44group of facts we're not trying to say well i'm 10 feet tall and you know and what he arrived
46:50at
46:51this is one that you wish was true and he said you know i wish it were true that this
46:56is exactly the
46:57kick in the pants that i need to restart my healthy habits and set the foundation for my next 30
47:02years
47:02of uh healthy thriving and what did he do you know he you know he dieted and he exercised and
47:09he joined
47:09the softball league and he did all those things and you know this was five six years ago you know
47:15he's
47:15healthier than ever right now it's exactly the kick in the pants he needed and again what we focus on
47:20it tends to expand absolutely i love that yeah i love when you said uh life happens between our ears
47:27because what we think about shows up in reality um when i was speaking earlier about um what you think
47:36and what you feel about yourself and a lot of times um you know people aren't even thinking anything
47:43you're thinking it yourself and you're drumming it up and because you've had those thoughts nobody said
47:49anything to you but you've had those mental thoughts you've had those inter conversations inner
47:53conversations that's when ends up showing up in reality so i had a mentor that used to tell me laram
48:01we write our own stories so basically um what you want out of life you can have and what you
48:09are
48:10experiencing right now you wrote that story so if you don't like it then write a different story
48:17yeah yeah write this one over here exactly and then for the next 30 days act as if that new
48:22interpretation is true what would all that well if it's true that this is exactly the kick in the
48:27pants that you need to set the healthy foundation for your next 30 years of thriving what would you do
48:32act as if it were true take that action it it's so uh powerful this conversation and it's so needed
48:38and it's like faith versus fear um it's like you have faith which is the positive side that you can't
48:49see it right you you you have to uh what do they say you have to well you can't see
48:57faith it's unseen
48:58you can prove it right and then fear right um you can't see that either right like you can't see
49:07either or but why does majority of us lean more towards fear versus faith yeah you know one of my
49:15we talked about core values earlier one of my core values is devotion as uh as human beings we're just
49:21we're just not very good at knowing what's good for us and what makes us happy and we chase all
49:26these
49:27things and hope that they'll make us happy but you know they very rarely do but if you could find
49:31something that you believe in a person a path and then believe in it devote yourself to it fully
49:40don't question the uh you know people have been thinking about this stuff for thousands of years
49:46you know they probably figured it out like don't say well i don't know that one doesn't make sense to
49:50me just pretend it's true i mean of course like if something deeply feels violative like you know
49:55question it but if it's you know if you're receiving this wisdom if you're following this path of
50:00someone that you believe in something that you believe in and you're like i don't know i think
50:05whatever you know well i mean great but how egotistical is that to say that you know it was as
50:12you know little of me who's never studied this stuff who you know just i don't think that's true i
50:17think it's this way you know maybe why don't you just pretend it's true and follow it for a while
50:21and see
50:22what happens and you know i'm a deeply spiritual person i've been in a spiritual path for about 15
50:28years and um i remember asking someone who's a little bit further ahead on my path uh like how do
50:35i just go deeper with my practice and she said the way to go deeper with your practice is to
50:42go deeper
50:43with your practice like there's nothing that anyone's going to tell you there's nothing that uh like we
50:48already told you everything like there's nothing new to learn here except to really sit with it and
50:53she was right and i went on this um program we're just to prepare we need to do three hours
50:58of uh yoga
51:00meditation every single day and wow like uh a couple weeks into that i went so much deeper into my
51:07practice and i just felt things that i'd never felt before just and she was absolutely the way to go
51:15deeper in your practice is just to go deeper into your practice choose a path that feels right to
51:21you and then follow it i like it i like it well i have to say for a mental monday
51:30this has definitely
51:31been so powerful i don't believe that we have ever gone that deep on the show uh like we have
51:39today so
51:39i want to say thank you thank you thank you so much for coming on and sharing your wisdom um
51:45you have
51:46sparked something in me i definitely will be uh speaking to you uh off air as well but for anybody
51:53out there that's listening that you know the aha moment the light bulb is going off can you please
52:00share your information so we know how to get in contact with you of course and i just want to
52:04say i'm
52:05i'm delighted and uh just that you got a lot out of this learn we're just scratching the surface
52:11the work is transformational i'm in the personal transformation business the way they're going to
52:15touch with me easiest way is to go to my website www.untangled-coaching.com don't forget the dash
52:22or go on linkedin search for jonathan domski and the only one very good and see i love that you're
52:28the only
52:29one a lot of that's why i said ladies and gentlemen there is no competition because there's only
52:35yeah one you and that's it so i don't want to be like me there and he would have made
52:40you like me
52:40but he basically he made you like you right right right wow this is amazing amazing conversation and
52:47i definitely would love to have you come back since we're just scratching the surface definitely come
52:51back uh in the future we'll try to get you to come back so thank you so much i appreciate
52:58you and
52:59i will definitely be in touch all right all right take care enjoy
53:06well ladies and gentlemen there you have it wow
53:16i don't believe that we have had anything like that i typically ask these questions when i don't know
53:24but learning right here on the spot when we're in the flow state was just amazing so this is a
53:31powerful
53:32movement here uh please continue to like comment share share this podcast out so many people definitely
53:39need to get this information especially for those of you who write in who text in who have let me
53:46know
53:46like i don't quite know what my purpose is i don't know what i should be doing or those of
53:53you who are
53:53stuck in your current situation current relationship you know how long we've been doing this and you know
54:01how long we've been having this open dialogue so this is a moment here we have had jonathan come on
54:09we've crossed paths and i think that this is a good breakthrough moment and again um by no means am
54:14i ever going to sit here and act like i've made it a hundred percent because a lot of things
54:18that jonathan
54:19was speaking today i'm taking notes and i will be listening to this replay and i will be focusing on
54:25things
54:25that um you know will help me get to the next level because there are no coincidences so the fact
54:33that
54:33he's on here the fact that i'm going through whatever i'm going through in a moment you're going through
54:38whatever you're going through in a moment i've had several people who know a heck of a lot more than
54:42me
54:42tell me laren that this is all happening for a reason everything happens for a reason and i'm a
54:49firm believer of that and there are certain things that i need to change i need to start doing some
54:54things different as well so i said i will never come out here and act like i'm the expert so
54:58just know
55:00that when i minister to you i minister to myself and we all and we learn and we grow here
55:05together
