09:40A reading from the Gospel according to Saint John, chapter 8.
09:47Then Jesus said to those Judeans who had believed him,
09:51If you continue to follow my teaching, you are really my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the
09:58truth will set you free.
10:02We are descendants of Abraham, they replied, and have never been anyone's slaves.
10:08How can you say you will become free?
10:12Jesus answered them,
10:14I tell you the solemn truth, everyone who practices sin is a slave of sin.
10:22The slave does not remain in the family forever, but the son remains forever.
10:28So if the son sets you free, you will be really free.
10:33I know that you are Abraham's descendants, but you want to kill me, because my teaching makes no progress among
10:41you.
10:42I am telling you the things I have seen while with the father.
10:47As for you, practice the things you have heard from the father.
10:52They answered him, Abraham is our father.
10:57Jesus replied,
10:59If you are Abraham's children, you would be doing the deeds of Abraham.
11:04But now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth I heard from God.
11:11Abraham did not do this.
11:19Then they said to Jesus, we were not born as a result of immorality.
11:25We have only one father, God himself.
11:33If God were your father, you would love me, for I have come from God and I am now here.
11:41I have not come on my own initiative, but he sent me.
11:47Why don't you understand what I am saying?
11:50It is because you cannot accept my teaching.
11:57You people are from your father the devil, and you want to do what your father desires.
12:03He was a murderer from the very beginning and does not uphold the truth, because there is no truth within
12:09them.
12:10Whenever he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies.
12:18But because I am telling you the truth, you do not believe me.
12:23Who among you can prove me guilty of any sin?
12:27If I am telling you the truth, why don't you believe me?
12:31The one who belongs to God listens and responds to God's words.
12:36If you don't listen and repent, you don't belong to God.
12:43The Judeans replied,
12:45Are we not correct in saying that you are a Samaritan and are possessed by a demon?
12:52Jesus answered,
12:54I am not possessed by a demon, but I honour my father, and yet you dishonour me.
13:00I am not trying to get praise for myself.
13:04But there is one who demands it, and he also judges.
13:09I tell you the solemn truth.
13:11If anyone obeys my teaching, he will never see death.
13:17Then the Judeans responded,
13:19Now we know you are possessed by a demon.
13:22Both Abraham and all the prophets died, and yet you say,
13:25If anyone obeys my teaching, he will never experience death.
13:30You are greater than our father Abraham who died, are you?
13:33And the prophets died too.
13:36Who do you claim to be?
13:40Jesus replied,
13:43If I glorify myself, my glory is worthless.
13:47The one who glorifies me is my father,
13:49about whom you say,
13:51He is our God.
13:53But you do not know him.
13:55I know him.
13:57If I were to say that I do not know him,
14:00I would be a liar, just like you.
14:02But I do know him, and I obey his teaching.
14:07Your father Abraham was overjoyed to see my day,
14:11and when he saw it, he was glad.
14:16Then the Judeans replied,
14:19You are not yet fifty years old.
14:21Have you seen Abraham?
14:25Jesus said to them,
14:27I tell you the solemn truth.
14:29Before Abraham came into existence,
14:31I am.
14:35Then they picked up stones to throw at him.
14:38But Jesus hid himself,
14:40and went out from the temple area.
14:44This is the word of the Lord.
14:47Thanks be to God.
14:56Jesus changes course in this passage,
15:00and whereas previously he had focused his attention on the Pharisees,
15:05here he also provides some comfort to those who are weak in faith,
15:09telling them that providing they keep his word,
15:12they will be counted as his disciples.
15:16What tremendous words these are,
15:18for we all have times,
15:20some of us perhaps more often than others,
15:23when our faith wavers and trembles just a little,
15:26or seems to vanish with the morning mist.
15:30However,
15:31here we have a promise,
15:32that provided we keep our hearts set on Jesus and his teachings,
15:37he will be with us,
15:38and will free us from the shackles of sin.
15:42Some,
15:43such as the Pharisees,
15:45might pretend to be disciples through show,
15:48but the true disciple,
15:49however weak and puny,
15:51has Jesus in his heart,
15:52and tries to keep his eyes fixed on him.
15:57It follows therefore,
15:59that regardless of our failures and weaknesses,
16:02provided that we are always turned toward our Saviour,
16:06and attentive to his word,
16:10we will not,
16:11these things will not matter,
16:13and neither will they be taken into account,
16:15in our final judgment.
16:19And there is a second great promise,
16:21for those who keep the word,
16:24that they shall know the truth,
16:25and knowing the truth,
16:27they shall be convicted by it,
16:29and freed from all sin.
16:32In what way can we appreciate this freedom?
16:36First of all,
16:37we become free from guilt.
16:39Once we have accepted Jesus into our lives,
16:42and found his forgiveness,
16:43then our guilt is washed away in his blood.
16:47We are no more blemished and stained by sin,
16:50but pure and virtuous.
16:53Spiritual freedom releases us
16:55from the dues of ceremonial laws and ritual.
16:58Not only,
17:00but more importantly,
17:01it makes us free of our spiritual enemies.
17:04Those forces of darkness,
17:06that have been the past,
17:07continue to chase us,
17:09and torment us day and night.
17:15Sadly,
17:16there were some in the crowd,
17:17who were not convicted,
17:19by the words of Jesus,
17:20and who took exception,
17:21to the notion,
17:22that they were servants.
17:24They claimed,
17:25to have been the children of Abraham,
17:28and that they had never been slaves.
17:31What a good example,
17:33of manipulating the evidence of history.
17:36For were they not slaves,
17:37once in Egypt,
17:39and again in Babylon?
17:42Such is the ability of the wicked and deceived heart,
17:46to overlook the evidence of the eyes and ears.
17:52Jesus, naturally,
17:53replied that if they were genuine sons of Abraham,
17:57then they would behave,
17:58as did Abraham,
17:59and be respectful and obedient to God,
18:02in all things,
18:04waiting on and trusting in his word.
18:08If this had truly been the case,
18:10then there would have been no need,
18:12for Jesus to have been sent,
18:13to save mankind,
18:14from its sinful and godless nature,
18:16in the first place.
18:21Jesus reveals,
18:23that there is no hereditary right,
18:25to heaven.
18:26Access to heaven,
18:27is limited to those,
18:28who purchase this right.
18:31For us,
18:32Jesus had paid the price,
18:33and allows us entry.
18:35But this right of entry,
18:37is personal,
18:38and depends entirely,
18:40on our relationship with him.
18:43If,
18:43when the time comes,
18:44for each and every one of us,
18:45Jesus says,
18:47I do not know you,
18:49then we must face,
18:50an eternity on the outside,
18:53and do not count,
18:54one bit,
18:54who our parents were,
18:56or which church we went to,
18:57or which priests we listened to,
19:00when we were alive.
19:02If we have not opened our hearts,
19:04to a full and deep relationship,
19:06with our Lord,
19:07we will not know him,
19:09and he will not know us.
19:14Jesus continued,
19:16to be on the receiving end,
19:17of the trick questions,
19:18of the hostile crowd.
19:20But he has further words,
19:22for those,
19:23who are interested,
19:24and want to listen.
19:27Jesus told them,
19:28that those who dwell,
19:29on what he says,
19:30has to say,
19:31will be his true disciples.
19:35But the Jews,
19:36were proud and stubborn.
19:37They were descended,
19:38from Abraham,
19:39were they not?
19:40They were not slaves,
19:42and never had been.
19:46There are two possible,
19:47interpretations,
19:48of the phrase,
19:49in verse 31.
19:51Both of which,
19:52are fully applicable,
19:53to us as Christians,
19:54and yet they revolve,
19:55around the word,
19:56dwell.
19:58This can either mean,
19:59to pause,
20:00for the purpose,
20:01of considering,
20:02or studying.
20:03Or it can mean,
20:04to live.
20:06We at the moment,
20:08are dwelling,
20:09on verse 31.
20:10As we think,
20:11of the various meanings,
20:12that can be given.
20:15We need to use,
20:16both the possible,
20:17interpretations.
20:19On the one hand,
20:20it is necessary,
20:21for us to think,
20:21about the words of Jesus,
20:23to dwell on them.
20:25And on the other hand,
20:26we must live the words,
20:27dwell in them.
20:30It is not,
20:31an either or situation.
20:33For those who believe,
20:34in God are required,
20:35to do both.
20:38Stubbornness,
20:39and pride,
20:40such as,
20:41was shown here,
20:43have no place,
20:44in the Christian life,
20:45as they leave,
20:46no place,
20:46for God.
20:49Jesus tells us,
20:50that those who know him,
20:51will not taste death.
20:55Apart from the fact,
20:56that this upset,
20:57the establishment,
20:58because Jesus,
20:59is asserting his status.
21:01This is a continuation,
21:02of the promise,
21:03passed on by Joshua.
21:06Knowing Jesus,
21:06is the new covenant,
21:08the new promise,
21:09of God,
21:09to his people.
21:11As the Israelites,
21:12were called upon,
21:13to honour God,
21:14and keep the law.
21:15We are called on,
21:17to know and love Jesus.
21:20As a result,
21:21of our love for Jesus,
21:22we strive,
21:22to keep the law,
21:23and the two great commandments,
21:25that he gave to us.
21:28Love the Lord your God,
21:29and love your neighbour.
21:33We need to keep ourselves,
21:35pure and untainted,
21:36in this world,
21:37for we belong to God,
21:39and to the next.
21:42Fortunately,
21:42Jesus knows,
21:43that this is impossible,
21:44for him being a man,
21:46that has promised,
21:46to forgive,
21:47and to uplift,
21:48and strengthen us.
21:50But we do need,
21:51to continue to try,
21:53every day,
21:54lest we dishonour him.
21:57If we love somebody,
21:59we wish,
22:00to please them.
22:03If we love Jesus,
22:04let us live our lives,
22:06to please Jesus.
22:27we praise him,
22:29we praise you, O God,
22:30and acknowledge you,
22:32to thee, our Lord,
22:35while yet thou pushest,
22:38O Father,
22:40ever by life's keeping,
22:42Till all angels cry out, and to all the hearts of me.
22:51To his servant and servant, unto him glory to pride.
22:59For the glory of the King of God, and to all the glory of the King of God.
