02:40Grant that no love of any transitory object may possess my soul, that I may never attach myself to any
02:47creature, and that even when I am bound to love, I may love only in you.

03:51Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, you, the greatest lover of the human race, who, when you
03:58were bringing out the work of our redemption to a close, brought yourself as a holy victim upon the altar
04:05of the cross for the sin of all mankind.
04:09May this be the only end, I beg you, of all my thoughts, words and works, namely, to seek your
04:17honour with an upright and sincere heart, and to desire nothing save you alone.

11:32A reading from the Gospel according to St John chapter 21.
11:38After these things Jesus let himself be seen again by the disciples at the sea of Tiberias and it came
11:46about in this way.
11:48Simon Peter, Thomas named Didymus, Nathaniel of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee and two others of his disciples
11:57were all together.
11:59Simon Peter said to them, I am going fishing.
12:03They said to him, We will come with you.
12:06They went out and got into the boat, but that night they took no fish.
12:12And very early in the morning Jesus was there by the edge of the sea, although the disciples were not
12:18conscious that it was Jesus.
12:21So Jesus said to them, Children, have you taken any fish?
12:27They made answer, No.
12:30He said to them, Let down the net on the right side of the boat and you will get some.
12:36And so they put it into the water and now they were not able to get it up again because
12:41of the great number of fish.
12:45The disciple who was dear to Jesus said to Peter, It is the Lord.
12:51Hearing that it was the Lord, Peter put his cloak around him because he was not clothed and went into
13:00the sea.
13:02The other disciples came in the little boat.
13:05They were not far from land, only about two hundred cubits off, pulling the net full of fish.
13:12When they got to land, they saw a fire of coals there with fish cooking on it and bread.
13:19Jesus said to them, Get some of the fish which you have now taken.
13:24So Peter went to the boat and came back, pulling the net to land, full of great fish and one
13:30hundred and fifty-three.
13:31And even though there was such a number, the net was not broken.
13:37Jesus said to them, Come and take some food.
13:41And the disciples were in fear, putting the question, Who are you?
13:45Being conscious that it was the Lord.
13:49Then Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and the fish in the same way.
13:54This was the third time that Jesus let himself be seen by the disciples, after he had come back from
14:00the dead.
14:03When they had eaten, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon, son of John, is your love for me greater than
14:09the love of these others?
14:11He said to him, Yes, Lord, you are certain of my love for you.
14:16He said to him, Then give my lambs food.
14:21Again, a second time he said to him, Simon, son of John, have you any love for me?
14:28Yes, Lord, he said, You are certain of my love for you.
14:33Take care of my sheep, said Jesus.
14:38He said to him a third time, Simon, son of John, am I dear to you?
14:45Now Peter was troubled in his heart, because he put the question a third time, am I dear to you?
14:53And he said to him, Lord, you have knowledge of all things.
14:57You see that you are dear to me.
15:00Jesus said to him, Then give my sheep food.
15:05Truly I say to you, when you were young, you made yourself ready, and went wherever you had a desire
15:11to go.
15:14But when you are old, you will put out your hands, and another will make you ready, and you will
15:19be taken where you have no wish to go.
15:22He said this, pointing out the sort of death by which he would give God glory.
15:28After this, he said to him, Come after me.
15:34Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple who was dear to Jesus coming after them.
15:39That disciple who had rested on his breast at the last meal, and said,
15:46Lord, who is it who will be false to you?
15:50Seeing him, Peter said to Jesus, What about this man?
15:56Jesus said to him, If it is my desire for him to be here until I come back, what is
16:02that to you?
16:04Come yourself after me.
16:07And so the saying went about amongst the brothers, that this disciple would not undergo death.
16:13Jesus, however, did not say that he would not undergo death.
16:18But, if it is my desire for him to be here until I come back, what is that to you?
16:26This is the disciple who gives witness about these things, and who put them in writing,
16:31and we know that his witness is true.
16:36Jesus did a number of other such things, that if everyone was recorded,
16:42it is my opinion that the world itself would not be great enough for the books there would be.
16:48This is the word of the Lord.

16:58The lot of Christ's disciples is usually a life of toil.
17:03In this there is little difference between the Christian and the worldly.
17:07If anything, the difference is in the worldly favour.
17:12The Christian is constrained to keep the king's highway,
17:15the beaten path of industry and straightforward honesty,
17:19and cannot shorten the journey by leaping fences,
17:22or trying an occasional shortcut through his neighbour's property.
17:27An omnipotent master might have emancipated his servants from juddery.
17:33But his wisdom, or what is the same thing, his kindness,
17:38has judged that it is not good for man to be idle.
17:43The toil of the disciple is not always successful.
17:49If, for probationary purposes,
17:52infinite wisdom has refused to make the church on earth a playground or a presser ground,
17:57for the same reason, he has refused also to make the infallible avenue to worldly wealth,
18:04the sure and certain passport to earthly rank and renown.
18:09A ship manned by good Christians,
18:12a concern in which none are embarked but disciples,
18:15may toil all night and catch nothing.
18:20Of this calamity the great eye is witness,
18:23and with this bitter grief the great heart sympathises.
18:27It is not willingly or willfully that he sends such an affliction,
18:32and as this incident teaches,
18:34if we take the master's bidding,
18:36we shall yet be gainers by this loss.
18:39For if the delay or disappointment,
18:42we shall at last be all richer.
18:46At that throw of the net brought nothing from the lake.
18:49The master had a meal prepared already on the land.
18:53So take his bidding,
18:55apply your calling,
18:55and if that calling fails to yield you any food or raiment,
18:59you may fearlessly cast yourself on that all-embracing care and kindness
19:04by which the ravens are fed and the lilies are clothed.
19:11In the touching incident related in this chapter,
19:14the first thing which strikes us is the grace of the Lord Jesus.
19:20However penitent Peter was,
19:23it was necessary to set him right with his brother apostles,
19:27whom he had first scandalised by his fallenness,
19:31and secondly by his fall.
19:34And how admirably this was accomplished by the question,
19:38Simon son of Jonas,
19:40do you love me more than these?
19:44The question to which Peter replied so humbly
19:47as to show that he claimed no pre-eminence even in affection,
19:52but so earnestly that fellow servants could not refuse the avowal
19:56which sufficed for the master.
20:01So in correcting any fault,
20:03in pointing it out,
20:04in trying to cure it,
20:06even in forgiving it,
20:09there is need for holy skill and tenderness.
20:14A second lesson is in the Saviour's wisdom
20:17in the selection of his agency.
20:20In that same apostolic band,
20:23there was another to whom we might have expected
20:25that the Lord would have said,
20:26or rather than to Peter,
20:29feed my lambs, feed my sheep.
20:33Yet, even though John is the disciple
20:36whom the brethren loved and whom the Saviour loved,
20:39in the work of planting the church
20:41and first preaching the gospel,
20:43he was not put forward like that other
20:45who had made so many false steps
20:48and had been repeatedly rebuked for his rashness.
20:54When their master's need was at the sorest,
20:57none of the disciples acted out and out
20:59for parts of the noblest
21:01and the most self-devoting friendship.
21:04But there were two whose fall was the most conspicuous,
21:08the one who betrayed him,
21:09and the other having with oaths and execrations,
21:14repudiated all connection with him.
21:17Both fell,
21:18but the one fell to rise no more,
21:20and the other not only recovered,
21:23but was fully reinstated
21:24in the confidence of his brethren
21:26and in the favour of the Lord.
21:30What made the difference?
21:34It arose from this.
21:37Truly, there was never a time
21:39when Judas truly loved his master.
21:43Peter did.
21:45The merest professor of religion
21:47may fall and never be recovered,
21:50but if you can answer to the demand of Christ,
21:53yes, Lord, you know that I love you,
21:56his long-suffering mercy
21:57will not only pardon, but cure you.
22:00Your diseases will be healed,
22:02your soul will be restored
22:04in the paths of righteousness,
22:06and you will be upheld
22:07by the Lord whom you follow.
22:12Follow Christ,
22:13and you will never be far from the Father.
22:16That pleasant countenance
22:18with which the Father beheld
22:20the well-beloved Son
22:21extends to all his followers,
22:24to all who in faith and affection
22:26gather around him
22:28or go after him,
22:30like this little band
22:31beside the lake of Galilee.
22:36You will learn to do things
22:37as Christ did them.
22:39You will learn to feed the sheep
22:41or the lambs as he fed them,
22:43warning, reproving, exhorting,
22:46with a kindred long-suffering.
22:48You will learn to be calm
22:50amidst astounding insults,
22:51and what is harder still,
22:53you will learn to be kind
22:55to the most unattractive misery.
22:58You will learn to meet temptation
23:00with,
23:00thus it is written,
23:02and for trial,
23:04you will learn to prepare
23:05by praying more earnestly.
23:10Christ will conduct you
23:11where no other can take you.
23:14I do not mean merely
23:16in the better life
23:17to which he is the only entrance,
23:18but also in the present world
23:20where there are heights
23:21of attainment
23:23and regions of joy
23:25which are reached only
23:26in his company.
23:29As you follow on,
23:30you will come to know him better
23:32and to trust him more,
23:34and you will find at last
23:35yourself looking down
23:36on earthly cares and worries,
23:38on the tumults of the people
23:40and of national commotions
23:42from heights
23:44such as the mere sage
23:45or statesman
23:46never scone.
23:49Christ will take you up
23:50where the others leave you.
23:52One by one,
23:53the companions of the pilgrimage
23:55will fall away
23:56and disappear,
23:58and at last,
23:59that mysterious summit
24:00will be reached
24:01where the rest
24:02can come no further.
24:04And as one by one
24:06the senses close,
24:07as in the thick fog
24:08dear faces fade away,
24:10and as far down the strand
24:12fond and familiar voices
24:14cease to overtake you,
24:17a countenance
24:18that you have never seen before
24:19and which yet
24:21you know full well
24:23will say to you
24:24as plainly as
24:26the supreme loveliness
24:27can say,
24:29it is I,
24:31do not be afraid.
24:36And so with gladness
24:37and rejoicing,
24:38you will be brought
24:39into the palace
24:40of the king,
24:42and there
24:42you shall abide.
24:49Let us pray.
24:52Lord,
24:53we beseech you,
24:54let your continual pity
24:56cleanse and defend
24:57your church,
24:58because it cannot continue
25:00in safety
25:01without your help.
25:04Reserve it evermore
25:05by your help
25:06and goodness,
25:07through Jesus Christ
25:09our Lord.
