13:25After this, being conscious that all things had now been done so that the writings might
13:31come true, Jesus said, Give me water.
13:37Now there was a vessel ready full of bitter wine, and they put a sponge full of it on a
13:42stick
13:42and put it to his mouth.
13:45So when Jesus had taken the wine, he said, All is done.
13:50And with his head bent, he gave up his spirit.
13:56Now it was the day of getting ready for the Passover, and so that the bodies might not be
14:02on the cross, on the Sabbath, because the day of that Sabbath was a great day.
14:07The Jews made request to Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
14:14So the men of the army came, and the legs of the first were broken, and then the other who
14:19was put to death on the cross with Jesus.
14:22But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was dead by this time, and so his legs were
14:28not broken.
14:30But one of the men made a wound in his side with a spear, and straight away there came out
14:35blood and water.
14:38He who saw it has given witness, and his witness is true.
14:42He is certain that what he says is true, so that you may have belief.
14:48These things came about so that the writings might be true.
14:52No bone of his body will be broken.
14:55Again, another verse says, They will see him who was wounded by their spears.
15:02After these things, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but in secret for fear of the Jews,
15:10made a request to Pilate to let him take away the body of Jesus.
15:14And Pilate said that he might do so.
15:18So he went and took away his body.
15:22Nicodemus came, he who had first come to Jesus by night, and with a roll of myrrh and aloes mixed,
15:30about a hundred pounds.
15:33And they took the body of Jesus, folding linen about it with the spices, as is the way of the
15:39Jews, when they put the dead to rest.
15:43Now there was a garden near the cross, and in the garden a new place for the dead, in which
15:47no man had ever been put.
15:50So they put Jesus there, because it was the Jews day of getting ready for the Passover, and the place
15:57was near.
16:01This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
16:12These words, as uttered by our Saviour on the cross, have a wide and deep meaning.
16:19For as his life was totally unlike that of all other men, so was his death.
16:26He did not live for himself or to himself, nor as one of many, nor did he die so.
16:32He died as he had lived wholly for mankind, according to the determined counsel and ordinance of God.
16:44Therefore, that which he declared to be finished when he was about to give up the ghost,
16:48must have been the great work for which he came into the world, and which was wrought by him and
16:54in him for all mankind.
16:57His warfare, the whole of that warfare which he came to wage for mankind, was accomplished.
17:05The iniquity of mankind was pardoned, or at least the gate of pardon had been set open for the penitent
17:11faith.
17:13As God's work was the work of creating the world, and his rest was the rest of governing and guarding
17:21and upholding the world which he had created.
17:24So our Saviour's work was that of renewing man's nature, and of laying the foundations of his church,
17:32of laying down himself, his own incarnate deity and divine humanity, to be its chief cornerstone.
17:40And his rest was that of watching over and directing and strengthening, sanctifying his church and all its members.
17:52Although the great work which Christ came to do was finished once and for all on this day,
17:57it was not finished as when we finish a work, and leave it to itself and turn to another.
18:04It was wrought even as the work of creation was, in order that it might become the teeming parent of
18:11countless works of the same kind,
18:13the first in an endless chain that should girdle the earth and stretch through all time.
18:21While in one sense it was an end, and in another it was a beginning.
18:26An end of the warfare and struggle which had been desolating the earth hopelessly ever since the fall,
18:32and the beginning of the peace in which the victory won on that day was to receive its everlasting consummation.
18:42He conquered sin and Satan for us, in order that he might conquer them in us, and that we might
18:49conquer them for him,
18:52that through his love constrains and his strength enables us.
18:58If we look at the world without the knowledge of Christ, without the hope of a saviour and deliverer,
19:05the whole race of man seems to be dashed about helplessly, in a rushing whirlpool of sin,
19:11or to lie like the host of the Egyptians at the bottom and on the shore of the sea.
19:18The whole race of mankind without Christ seems to be under a heavy yoke of sin,
19:23against which they can hardly so much as struggle, and consequently to be under a sweeping sentence of condemnation.
19:34If one were to look abroad over the earth, and to behold what is going on,
19:39wherever men are gathered together, and what is lurking and brooding in their hearts,
19:44if one were to behold all this with the knowledge of sin, of its hatefulness and deadliness,
19:52yet without any knowledge of Christ, and of the redemption which he has wrought from sin,
19:58it could hardly seem but as though Satan had gained a great victory over God,
20:04as though he must have outwitted God, or overpowered him,
20:08as though he had stolen the earth out of God's keeping, and brought it over to the side of hell.
20:19The death of Christ shows how God could be holy, could have a holy hatred of sin,
20:25and yet could have compassion upon the sinner.
20:29How he could be just, and yet a justifier of those who believe in Jesus.
20:36The Son of God became the Son of Man, and took our nature upon him,
20:41and therefore lifted that nature out of its sinful pollution, into the light of perfect purity,
20:48bearing our sins upon the cross.
20:52Our sin must die, he too, in that he bore our sins, submitted to his own death.
21:00He bore them for us, and for us he died.
21:03He died that we might live, purged from our sins in his blood.
21:08And thus, as in Adam we had all died, even so in Christ we were all made alive.
21:17This then is the great choice which is set before you in this life.
21:21Sin would murder you, Christ would save you.
21:26You are not to fear your sins, as though they were too mighty for you,
21:30seeing that Christ has conquered them on your behalf.
21:34But having such a leader, such a captain, such a bulwark and tower of strength,
21:39you are to fight against them boldly and undaultedly.
21:44He who died on the cross to take away your sins will strengthen you to fight and resist sin,
21:50and in his strength you shall overcome it.
21:58You cannot help but be struck by the hypocrisy of the Jews in this passage.
22:03First of all, we are told that for the Jews it would have been insulting for there to be dead
22:08or dying bodies on crosses for people to see over the Passover Sabbath.
22:14They wanted them finished off and cleared away.
22:21Secondly, we learned that the process of doing this would not be quick and humane, such as beheading might have
22:28been.
22:29No, the method of dispatch was to be the breaking of their legs, which would have resulted in death from
22:36the pain of torture.
22:39This is a further example of what a broken society it was, one driven by outer rather than inner cleanliness.
22:48Just as the Pharisee putt himself up and made a great show of putting more in the poor box than
22:54the widow,
22:56who had next to nothing.
22:58The authorities wanted to be seen to be doing the decent thing,
23:02although decency was the last thing they had on their minds.
23:07But if we look around us today, it is not hard to find similar examples of people who want to
23:13give a good impression of themselves,
23:15but who, in reality, have darker intentions.
23:20As Jesus pointed out on several occasions,
23:23it is not what we do, but our thoughts and our motives that betray us before God.
23:35Let us pray.
23:38Lord, we beseech you, let your continual pity cleanse and defend your church.
23:44Because it cannot continue in safety without your help.
23:50Reserve it evermore by your help and goodness.
23:53Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
