00:22Let us pray.
00:26Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when you were given up to the will
00:32of your persecutors, suffered many torments when they took off the purple robe, which
00:37was stuck to your wounds, and put upon you your own clothes. Grant that after I have
00:44put off the clothing of this body, I may be clad with the robe of perfect charity, and
00:50that I may be adorned with your merit, and through your mercy be introduced as an adopted
00:57son into the heavenly inheritance.
01:01Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who in the midst of reproach and injury bore
01:07your cross with excessive pain on your sacred and cut shoulders. Wearied and panting for
01:14breath you toiled exceedingly under its heavy weight. Give me grace to take hold of the
01:20cross of self-denial with ardent devotion, and to imitate with the most fervent of charity
01:26the example of your virtues, and to follow you in humility even unto death.
01:35Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when you were led from the city with two
01:41thieves, did not refuse to be pressed upon and thrust, hastened and to be afflicted in
01:47many ways. Draw me after you, that I may quickly follow. Grant that for your sake I may entirely
01:55deny, forsake, and go out of myself. Give me grace to think of you alone and to find no joy,
02:02except in you, my Redeemer. Grant that I may love you alone, and may return love for love,
02:11may I earnestly seek after you, and live to you alone.
02:18Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when bowed down by the weight of your cross,
02:24at length reached the place of punishment, where, quite exhausted, they offered you wine mingled
02:32with gall. May you extinguish in me all gluttonous and carnal desire, giving me grace never to consent
02:41to any impure or unlawful pleasure. But may I take my food in moderation, to the glory of your name,
02:49and may hunger and thirst after you alone, and find no pleasure or gladness except in you.
02:58Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who was stripped before the gaze of all people on
03:04Mount Calvary, and the soreness of your wounds being increased by the removal of your clothing.
03:11You did not refuse to undergo, for my sake, the most dreadful pain. Grant that I may love the
03:19spirit of poverty, and never be disturbed by want or scarcity. Give me grace to bear patiently any
03:26difficulties or troubles in this life, for the glory of your name. Strip my heart of every vain fancy and
03:34affection. And grant me a holy intent, with pious desires, renewing within me daily a most pure love
03:43for yourself. Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who gave himself up to be extended naked upon
03:52on the wood of the cross, on the joints of your most holy limbs, to be wrenched apart, most cruelly
03:59nailed
03:59and fastened thereto. Then for my sake you suffered your most delicate hands and feet, to be most deeply wounded.
04:10Grant, O Lord, that I might remember, with a faithful and grateful heart, this your unspeakable charity,
04:19when you did of your own accord stretch out your hands to be bored, and your feet to be pierced
04:25through.
04:26O Lord, enlarge and extend my heart by perfect love of you. Pierce it and fix it to yourself with
04:34the nail
04:34of your sweetest love. And shut up within yourself alone all my senses, all my thoughts and all my affections.
04:43Amen.
04:48O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
04:59O be joyful in the Lord, holy man, serve the Lord with gladness, and come with all his prayers and
05:17O Lord, holy man, serve the Lord with gladness, and come with all his prayers and love, and
05:26our Lord, holy man, serve the Lord with gladness, and come with all his prayers and grace and glory.
05:35O Lord, open his mind, and will you now please stand para ti a fire.

09:40not with the linen bands but rolled up in a place by itself.
09:46Then the other disciple who came there first went in.
09:50He saw and Belie came to him.
09:53For at that time they had no knowledge that the writing said
09:56that he would have to come again from the dead.
10:00So then the disciples went away again to their houses.
10:05But Mary was still there outside the hole in the rock weeping.
10:10While she was weeping and looking into the hole
10:13she saw two angels in white where the body of Jesus had been
10:17one at the head and the other at the feet.
10:20And they said to her,
10:22Woman, why are you weeping?
10:27She said to them,
10:29Because they have taken away my Lord
10:30and I have their knowledge of where they put him.
10:37Then looking around she saw Jesus there.
10:40But she had no idea that it was Jesus.
10:45Jesus said to her,
10:47Woman, why do you weep?
10:49Who are you looking for?
10:53She, believing him to be the gardener, said to him,
10:56Sir, if you have taken him away from here,
10:59say where you have put him and I will take him away.
11:05Jesus said to her,
11:07Mary.
11:11Turning, she said to him in Hebrew,
11:15Raphoni,
11:16which is to say,
11:18Master.
11:21Jesus said to her,
11:23Do not put your hand on me,
11:25for I have not gone up to the Father.
11:27But go to my brothers and say to them,
11:30I go up to my Father and to your Father,
11:32to my God and to your God.
11:36Mary Magdalene went with the news to the disciples
11:40and said that she had seen the Lord
11:42and that he had said these things to her.
11:48This is the word of the Lord.
11:51Thanks be to God.
11:57This is John's first-hand account of the resurrection.
12:02When he saw all the wrappings carefully folded up,
12:06we are told that he believed that Jesus had risen.
12:13It is not clear where Mary was at this time.
12:16But she was probably outside or close by,
12:19for this is where she was when Jesus appeared to her.
12:23It is also not clear
12:25what may have been said before the disciples had left her.
12:31The two disciples went away believing
12:33because they found that Christ was not in the sepulchre.
12:38But Mary Magdalene came and told them
12:40that she had seen him risen
12:42and that had heard his voice with her ears.
12:50What she told Peter and John,
12:51Peter and John are now telling to us.
12:54They tell us that they have heard him,
12:56that they have seen him with their eyes,
12:58they have looked upon him.
13:00Yes, that their hands have even handled him.
13:03We may trust their witness
13:05as they trusted hers,
13:07being ready indeed to believe that he was alive
13:10because they had found that he was not amongst the dead.
13:15And so we finding that he is not amongst the dead,
13:19seeing and knowing the fruits of his gospel,
13:22the living and ever increasing fruits of it,
13:25may well believe that its author is risen
13:28and that the pains of death were loosed of him
13:32because it was not possible
13:33that he should be held by them.
13:38In this way, we, like the two disciples,
13:41may all be said to be witnesses
13:43of Christ's resurrection.
13:49But this is now past,
13:50as with the two disciples,
13:52and we are going again to our own homes.
13:56There neither the empty sepulchre
13:58nor the risen Saviour are present before us,
14:01but common scenes and familiar occupations,
14:05which in themselves have nothing in them of Christ.
14:10May we not hope that Christ and Christ's Spirit
14:13will visit us the while
14:14in these our daily callings,
14:17as he came to his disciples Peter and John
14:20when following their business as fishers
14:23on the lake of Gennesaret.
14:26How can we get him to visit us?
14:29There is one answer.
14:31By prayer and by watchfulness.
14:34All of us have in truth one great call yet before us
14:38and with respect to that we are all still preparing.
14:42And for that great call, common to all of us,
14:45we need all the same common state of readiness.
14:48And that readiness will be affected in us
14:50only by the same means.
14:52If now, before it should come,
14:56Christ and Christ's Spirit shall,
14:58in our homes and in our daily callings,
15:00be persuaded to visit with us.
15:06Mary remained convinced that someone had stolen the body.
15:10But in the event, Jesus appeared to her fairly quickly
15:13and she also came to believe.
15:17We can learn a little of the depth of her love for Jesus
15:20by her actions that morning,
15:22for when Peter and John,
15:24having seen the empty tomb,
15:26quickly returned to their houses.
15:35What she was thinking we can only begin to imagine.
15:40But it is very clear that she dearly missed
15:43the one who had transformed her life,
15:46the one who had rescued her from the clutches of her demons.
15:51No doubt she wondered why it was
15:53he had been made to suffer so,
15:56one who was so pure
15:57and sweet
15:59and kind
16:00and perfect,
16:01one who was without any form of sin,
16:04who had worked so tirelessly
16:06for the good of the people
16:07that he so dearly loved.
16:10How she longed
16:11to hear him
16:12tenderly calling her name
16:14and how she instantly
16:16recognised his voice
16:18the moment he spoke that name.
16:23Some of us find it easier to believe than others.
16:27For some,
16:28we have preconceived ideas
16:30which can make belief difficult.
16:32In Mary's case,
16:34she was convinced
16:35that someone had stolen the body
16:36and this was a block
16:38on the possibility of belief.
16:43Let us pray that our hearts
16:45may not be closed
16:46by our preconceptions
16:48but
16:49let us be open to belief
16:51and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.
16:57Mary had gone at first light
16:59to the tomb
17:00and discovering the stone
17:02rolled away
17:03and the tomb empty
17:05had fetched
17:06Peter and John.
17:08They too had seen
17:09the empty tomb
17:10and had gone inside
17:11before shrugging their shoulders
17:13and returning
17:14to their house.
17:16Mary, we are told,
17:18remained at the tomb
17:19beside herself
17:20with grief
17:21and not knowing
17:22what to do.
17:25But looking back
17:26into the tomb
17:27she saw the two angels.
17:30These must have just appeared
17:31for she had not seen them before
17:33and certainly
17:34they had not been seen
17:35by Peter and by John.
17:38They asked her
17:39why she was so distressed.
17:42Then she turned back
17:43to face the garden
17:43and saw a man there
17:45she supposed to be the gardener.
17:49If he had been the gardener
17:51then he would have been
17:52a servant of Joseph
17:53and therefore a friend
17:54and so she asked him
17:56what he had done
17:57with the body.
18:01At this point
18:02rather than waiting
18:02for his reply
18:03she must have turned back
18:05to face the grave
18:06for on hearing
18:08Mary
18:10she had to turn
18:11once more
18:11to face Jesus.
18:14We might ask ourselves
18:16why Jesus showed himself
18:17to Mary
18:18and not to Peter
18:19and John
18:19when they were there.
18:22We will never know
18:23for certain
18:24but it is possible
18:25perhaps
18:26that Mary was more
18:27ready and willing
18:28to believe
18:29than the others
18:30at this point.
18:33Certainly
18:33she was the one
18:34who was more actively
18:35and anxiously
18:36looking for the body
18:37rather than
18:39Peter and John
18:40who had come
18:40looked inside the tomb
18:42and then gone home.
18:45In this
18:46she was being persistent
18:48and not prepared
18:48to give up
18:49at the first obstacle.
18:52These
18:53are the hallmark qualities
18:54of a devout Christian
18:56and Jesus
18:57rewarded her
18:58with the most touching
18:59words possible.
19:03Rushing
19:04to give her teacher
19:05a hug
19:06in her pleasure
19:06Jesus
19:07had to gently
19:09rebuke her.
19:10The time
19:11for these things
19:12had passed
19:12for now
19:13it was time
19:14for the disciples
19:15to move on
19:16to grow up
19:17in maturity
19:18of faith.
19:20With the help
19:21of the Holy Spirit
19:22they would learn
19:22to stand
19:23on their own
19:24without the need
19:25for physical
19:26reassurance
19:26and comfort
19:28facing the
19:29gravest of dangers
19:30with
19:31fortitude.
19:37let us pray
19:39Lord
19:40we beseech
19:41you
19:42let your
19:43continual pity
19:44cleanse
19:44and defend
19:45your church
19:46because it
19:47cannot continue
19:48in safety
19:49without
19:49your help.
19:52Reserve it
19:53evermore
19:53by your help
19:54and goodness
19:55through Jesus
19:56Christ
19:57our Lord.
19:58Amen.
20:04May the Lord
20:05bless us
20:05and keep us
20:06from all evil
20:07bringing us
20:09to everlasting
20:10life.
20:11Amen.
