00:00.
00:34Let us pray.
00:36Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
00:40who your faithless disciple Judas sold for a vile sum of money to the Jews
00:45who were persecuting you and conspiring against your life.
00:50Root out, I beg you, from my heart all evil love of any creature.
00:56Grant that I may never prefer anything to you.
01:00May I always show the most perfect charity towards all men,
01:05especially those who trouble me.
01:08Pardon me, my holy Redeemer, for having so often prepared vain and perishable things to you,
01:15and for having, for the sake of vile pleasures, turned myself from you.
01:21Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
01:24who ate the Passover with your disciples at Jerusalem,
01:27according to the commandments of the law,
01:30giving them an example of humility and holy love
01:33by kneeling down on the ground and washing their feet,
01:37wiping them with a linen cloth.
01:40I pray that this, your example, may penetrate my soul,
01:45destroying thoroughly any haughtiness and pride within me.
01:49Give me, O Lord, the deepest humility,
01:52that I may, without delay, perform the lowest ministry to all men.
01:56Give me perfect obedience, that I may, with complete diligence,
02:01observe as your commandments, whatever your appointed representatives may decide.
02:09Give me the most fervent charity, that I may sincerely love all mankind.
02:16Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
02:20who out of your unspeakable love gave us the sacrament of the Eucharist,
02:25and in it given yourself to us with wondrous liberality,
02:30so that you might remain with us even bodily unto the end of the world.
02:36Grant me, I beg you, O Lord, an earnest longing
02:40and enkindle in my innermost soul
02:43an intense hunger for this adorable sacrament.
02:47Grant that when I go to the table of life
02:50I may receive you with chaste affection,
02:52complete humility and perfect purity of heart.
02:57May my soul so thirst for you now
02:59and so languish in your love
03:01that I may, one day, be found suitable
03:05to enjoy the delights of your eternal kingdom
03:07to the glory everlasting of your name.
03:12Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
03:15who, when you were about to leave the world,
03:18commanded and comforted with words of unspeakable sweetness
03:21your disciples
03:23and most earnestly commended them in prayer to your Father,
03:29most plainly showing how tenderly you love them and us
03:33who were to believe through their word.
03:37Grant that my heart may evermore relish your word
03:40and that I may find your words sweeter than honey to my taste.
03:47O that the spirit of that burning exhortation
03:50may so glide into my heart
03:51that I may be wholly transformed into your love.
03:56So direct all my ways, O Lord my God,
03:59that your holy will
04:00may be done in and by me
04:03for ever and ever.
04:06Praise and honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
04:09who went out with your disciples
04:11across the Kedron brook
04:12and came into the garden
04:14which you knew
04:15would be where you would be taken.
04:19May I entirely give up my will
04:22and always follow and love yours.
04:25May I, for your honour
04:26and for the salvation of my brothers and sisters,
04:29boldly endure any adversity
04:31and be willing even to lay down my life
04:34if your divine providence should so ordain it.
04:40Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ,
04:43who, as your passion drew nigh,
04:45began to be sorrowful and sad,
04:48with a heavy heart
04:49and so that by transferring the weakness
04:52of all your members to yourself
04:53you might be able to console
04:55and strengthen them
04:56when they were in their time of fear
04:59at the approach of death
05:00by this your own weakness
05:03which you had willingly taken upon you.
05:07Preserve me, I beg you,
05:09both from the immoderate sorrow
05:11and from foolish gladness.
05:14Grant that the grief
05:16which I have thus far endured
05:18may be for your glory
05:19and for the remission of my sins.
05:22Remove mercifully from me
05:24all distrust
05:25and unnecessary weakness
05:27and confirm and establish my soul
05:30whole in you.
05:33Praise and honour and glory
05:35be to you, O Christ,
05:36who fell prostrate on the ground
05:38and prayed to your Holy Father,
05:40humbly offering your whole self to him,
05:43saying,
05:44Your will be done.
05:47Give me grace in every necessity
05:49and trouble
05:50to fly to you in prayer
05:52and freely to resign
05:54and give myself up to your will.
05:59May I never unduly endeavour
06:01to escape from trouble
06:02but receive all things
06:05from your hand with a quiet mind
06:06and may I endure everything
06:09in meekness of spirit
06:11for your love.
06:13Amen.
06:17O Lord, open our lips
06:19and our mouth shall sing
06:21your praise.
06:29O be joyful in the Lord
06:32O be damned
06:35Turn the Lord with gladness
06:38And come in white prayers
06:42And thrill us on
06:45He is sure that the Lord
06:49He is God
06:51It is He that has made us
06:54and lost me ourselves
06:56We are His people
07:00and the sheep of His pasture
07:03O Lord, pray your ways
07:07To His feet
07:08With mercy
07:09And in joy
07:12His cross
07:13With grace
07:15Be thankful
07:24The Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting, and his truth and joy from generation to generation.
07:47Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning,
08:02is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
08:25O God, O God, O God, O God, O my praise, O the mouth of the ungodly,
08:38O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God,
08:47O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God,
08:50O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God,
08:52O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God,
08:54O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God,
08:56O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God,
08:56O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God, O God,
08:58O God, O God, O God, O God, O
09:07without a cause.
09:12Oh, the love that I have unto them,
09:17love which it now I can't lay apart,
09:24but I give myself unto them.
09:29Oh, the love that I have unto them,
09:37and praise them for my good will.
09:44Set thou an unloving man to be good alone by you,
09:52and let Satan stand at his right hand,
09:59when sentence is near upon him,
10:03let him be condemned,
10:07and let his breath be turned into sin.
10:15Let his faith be few,
10:19and let another take his office.
10:24Let his children be fatherless,
10:32and his wife of him.
10:37Let his children be fatherless,
10:41and let them be loved,
10:44and let them seek it also
10:48out of desolate places.
10:52Let the extortion consume all that we are,
10:59and let the stranger storm his neighbor.
11:06let them be loved,
11:11let them be loved,
11:12and let them be loved,
11:28and in the next generation
11:32let his daily
11:34good heart.
11:38Let the wickedness
11:40of his father
11:42be found in repentance
11:44in the sight
11:47of the Lord
11:49and let not the sin
11:52of his father
11:54be done away.
11:58Let them know
11:59they be before the Lord
12:02that he may
12:05root at the memorial
12:07of the crown
12:09of the earth

12:15his mind was not

12:25that he might
12:28sway him
12:29that was meant
12:30at the heart.
12:33His delight
12:35was in God's
12:36sin and it
12:37shall have
12:38been to him.
12:40he loved
12:43blessing
12:44therefore
12:46shall it be
12:48far from
12:50him.
12:53He loved

17:44a
17:44reading from the gospel according to st. John chapter 18
17:51they led Jesus therefore from Caiaphas into the praetorium
17:56it was early and they themselves didn't enter into the praetorium that they may not be defiled but might eat
18:04the Passover
18:06Pilate
18:07Pilate therefore went out to them and said what accusation do you bring against this man
18:15they answered him if this man were not an evil doer we would not have delivered him to you
18:25Pilate
18:25Pilate therefore said to them take him yourselves and judge him according to your law
18:33therefore the Jews replied to him it is not lawful for us to put anyone to death
18:39that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled which he had spoken signifying by what kind of death he should
18:46die
18:49Pilate therefore
18:50returned into the praetorium called Jesus and said to him
18:55are you the king of the Jews
18:59Jesus answered saying
19:01do you say this by yourself
19:02or did others tell you abate me
19:07Pilate answered
19:09I am not a Jew am I
19:12your own nation
19:13and the chief priest delivered you to me
19:16what have you done
19:19Jesus answered
19:22my kingdom is not of this world
19:24if my kingdom were of this world
19:26then my servants would fight
19:28that I wouldn't be delivered to the Jews
19:31but now my kingdom is not from here
19:37Pilate therefore said to him
19:39are you a king then
19:42Jesus answered
19:44you say that I am a king
19:46for this reason I have been born
19:48and for this reason I have come into the world
19:51that I should testify to the truth
19:55everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice
20:00Pilate said to him
20:02what is truth
20:05when he had said this he went out once again to the Jews and said to them
20:10I find no basis for a charge against him
20:14but you have a custom
20:15that I should release someone to you at the Passover
20:19therefore do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews
20:24then they all shouted again saying
20:27no not this man
20:28but Barabbas
20:32Barabbas was a robber
20:35this is the word of the Lord
20:37thanks be to God
20:43John evidently felt the need
20:46to supplement the synoptic gospels account
20:49for here he tells of Christ's appearance before Annas
20:53but passes by that before Caiaphas
20:56although he shows his knowledge of it
20:59in similar vein
21:01he touches lightly on the public hearing before Pilate
21:04but gives us in detail the private conversation in this section
21:07which he alone records
21:11may we perhaps suppose that he was present at both the hearing before Annas
21:16and the interview within the palace between Jesus and Herod
21:20for he would not be deterred from entering as the Jews were
21:23and there seemed to have been no other impediment in their way
21:30the passage has three stages
21:32the fencing between the Sanhedrin and Pilate
21:35the good confession before Pilate
21:38and the preference of Barabbas to Jesus
21:44so let us first look at the passage between the priests and the governor
21:50it was early
21:51probably before six o'clock
21:54a hurried meeting of the Sanhedrin had condemned Jesus to death
21:58and the next thing to have done
22:00would be to get the Roman authorities to carry out the sentence
22:05the necessity of the appeal
22:07was a bitter pill
22:09but it had to be swallowed
22:10for the right of capital punishments
22:13had been withdrawn from the Jews
22:16a religious scruple however stood in the way
22:19very characteristic of such formalists
22:25killing an innocent man would not in the least defile them
22:28or make them unfit for eating the Passover
22:32but to go into a house that had not been purged off Levin
22:35and was further unclean as the residence of a Gentile
22:39though he may be the governor
22:42that would stain their conscience
22:44to a singular scale of magnitude
22:48which saw no sin in condemning Jesus
22:50and great sin in going into Pilate's palace
22:56perhaps some of our conventional sins
22:59are a little like this
23:04Pilate was probably naturally not best pleased at being roused so early
23:10nor at having to defer to a scruple
23:13which to him would look like insolence
23:16and through all his bearing to the Sanhedrin
23:19a certain traditional irritation shows itself
23:23which sometimes reveals itself in sarcasm
23:28but it is for the most part kept stone
23:32his first question is perhaps
23:34not as simple as it looks
23:38for it is likely he would have had
23:40some previous knowledge of the case
23:42as it is possible that Roman soldiers
23:45had been used to supplement the arrest
23:50but clearly those who brought him a prisoner
23:53were bound to be the prosecutors
23:57whether or not Pilate knew
23:59that the question he asked
24:00was to be embarrassing
24:01the rulers felt it so
24:05why did they not wish to formulate proper charges
24:09partly from pride perhaps
24:11they hugged to the delusion
24:13that their court was competent to condemn
24:15and wanted as we all often do
24:18to shut their eyes to a plain fact
24:20as if ignoring it annihilated it
24:24partly because the charge
24:26in which they had condemned Jesus
24:27that of blasphemy
24:29in calling himself the Son of God
24:31was not a crime according to Roman law
24:34and to allege it
24:36would probably have ended
24:37in the whole matter being scornfully dismissed
24:41and so they stood on their dignity
24:43and tried to bluster
24:45we have condemned him
24:47that is enough
24:48we look to you to carry out the sentence
24:50at our bidding
24:53and so
24:54the ecclesiastical authority
24:56has often said to the secular
24:58since then
25:00and unfortunately the civil authority
25:02has not always been quite as wise
25:05as Pilate was
25:09he saw an opening
25:10to get rid of the whole matter
25:12and with just a faint flavour of irony
25:15he suggested that
25:16as they have a law
25:18which he no doubt thought of as very barbarous
25:21they should go by it
25:23and punish as well as condemn
25:27that a sarcastic proposal
25:30compelled them to acknowledge their subjection
25:34Pilate had given the reins the least touch
25:36but enough to make them feel the bit
25:39and although it went sore
25:40against their grain
25:41their own will
25:44was their master
25:45rather than to lose their victim
25:49and so their reluctant lips said
25:52it is not lawful for us
25:56Pilate had brought them on their knees at last
25:59and they forget their dignity
26:01and own the truth
26:03malicious hatred
26:05will lead any amount of dirt
26:06and humiliation to gain its end
26:08especially if it calls itself
26:11religious zeal
26:15John sees in the issue of this first round
26:18the duel between Pilate and the rulers
26:21the sequence of events
26:23which brought about the fulfilment
26:25of our Lord's prediction of his crucifixion
26:28since that was not a Jewish mode of execution
26:32this encounter of wit
26:34becomes tragic and awful
26:36when we remember who it was
26:38that these men were arguing over
26:44then we have the dialogue between Jesus and Pilate
26:47the good confession
26:49and the indifferent answer
26:54we must surely suppose that unwillingly
26:57the rulers had brought the accusation
26:59that Jesus had attempted rebellion against Rome
27:02John omits that
27:04because he takes it for granted
27:06that it was known
27:08it is implied in the conversation
27:10which was to ensue
27:15we must note as remarkable
27:17that Pilate does not conduct
27:18this examination in the presence of the rulers
27:21but had taken him aside at the palace
27:24perhaps he wished
27:26merely to annoy the accusers
27:29but more probably
27:30his Roman sense of justice
27:31combined with his wish
27:33to assert his authority
27:35and perhaps
27:36with a slight suspicion
27:38that there was something strange
27:39about the whole matter
27:41and not least strange
27:42that the Sanhedrin
27:43who were not enthusiastic supporters of Rome
27:47should all at once
27:48display such loyalty
27:50to make him wish
27:52to have the prisoner to himself
27:53and to try to fathom the business
27:55for himself
27:58so with Roman directness
27:59he went straight to the point
28:01are you the king of the Jews
28:03as they have been saying
28:06there is an emphasis in you
28:08the emphasis
28:10which a practical Roman official
28:12would be likely to put
28:13as he looked at the weak
28:15wearied
28:15and evidently poor
28:17and helpless man
28:18bound before him
28:21there is almost
28:22a touch of pity
28:23in the question
28:24and certainly the beginning
28:26of the conviction
28:26that this was truly
28:28not a formidable rival
28:29to Caesar
28:34the answer
28:35to be given
28:36depended on the sense
28:38in which Pilate
28:39asked the question
28:41to bring out
28:42which is the object
28:43of Christ's question
28:45in reply
28:48if Pilate was asking
28:49of himself
28:50then what he meant
28:51by king
28:52was one of earth's
28:54monarchs
28:55after the emperor's own
28:56pattern
28:57and the answer
28:58would be
28:58no
29:01if he was merely
29:02repeating the Jewish charge
29:03then king
29:04might mean
29:05the prophetic king
29:07of Israel
29:08who was given
29:09no rival
29:10of earthly monarchs
29:14and the answer
29:15would be yes
29:17but that yes
29:18would give Pilate
29:19no more reason
29:20to crucify him
29:21than the no
29:22would have given
29:25Pilate
29:26is weary
29:27of fencing
29:28and impatiently
29:30answered
29:30with true Roman contempt
29:31for the subject
29:32people's thoughts
29:34as well as their weapons
29:36am I a Jew
29:38he said
29:39with a curl
29:40of the firm lip
29:42he points
29:42to his informants
29:43your own people
29:45and the chief priests
29:46and does not say
29:47that their surrender
29:48of a would-be leader
29:49in a war of independence
29:51struck him
29:52as suspicious
29:54but he brushes
29:55aside
29:55these cobwebs
29:56which he felt
29:57were being spun
29:58around him
29:59and came to the point
30:01what is it
30:02that you have done
30:05he is supremely indifferent
30:07to ideas
30:08and vagaries
30:09of enthusiasts
30:11this poor man
30:12before him
30:13could call himself
30:14anything he chose
30:16but his only concern
30:17is with the open act
30:20strange
30:21how it was
30:22to ask a prisoner
30:23what it was
30:23that he had done
30:26it had been well
30:27for Pilate
30:28if he had held fast
30:29by that question
30:30and based his judgment
30:32resolutely
30:33on the answer
30:36but he kept asking it
30:38all through the case
30:39and never succeeded
30:40in getting an answer
30:42he was convinced
30:44that Jesus
30:44had done nothing
30:45worthy of death
30:46and yet fear
30:47and a wish
30:48to carry favour
30:49with the rulers
30:50drove him
30:51to stain
30:51the judges robe
30:52with innocent blood
30:55from which he
30:56vainly sought
30:56to cleanse his hands
31:01our Lord's double answer
31:03claimed a kingdom
31:04but first shows
31:06what it is not
31:07and then what it is
31:08it is not
31:10of this world
31:11though it is
31:12in this world
31:14being established
31:15and developed here
31:16but having nothing
31:18in common
31:18with earthly dominion
31:19nor being advanced
31:21by their weaponry
31:22or methods
31:25Pilate
31:25could convince himself
31:27that this kingdom
31:28was no menace
31:29or threat
31:29to Rome
31:30from the fact
31:31that no resistance
31:32had been offered
31:33to Christ's capture
31:35but the principle
31:37involved in these
31:38truly great words
31:39goes far beyond
31:40their immediate application
31:43it forbids
31:44Christ's servants
31:45to assimilate
31:46his kingdom
31:47to the world
31:48or to use
31:49worldly powers
31:49as the means
31:50for the kingdom's
31:51advancement
31:53the history
31:54of the church
31:55has sadly proved
31:56how impossible
31:57it is
31:58for Christian men
31:59to learn this lesson
32:00and how fatal
32:03to the energy
32:04and purity
32:05of the church
32:06this has been
32:09the temptation
32:10to such assimilation
32:11besets all
32:13organised Christianity
32:14and is as strong
32:16today
32:16as when Constantine
32:18gave the church
32:19the paralysing gift
32:20of establishing it
32:22as a kingdom
32:23of this world
32:28Pilate did
32:29pick out of this
32:30saying
32:30an increasing certainty
32:32that he had nothing
32:33to fear
32:33from this strange king
32:35and half amused
32:37contempt
32:37for a dreamer
32:38and half pitying
32:39wonder
32:39at such lofty claims
32:41from such a
32:42helpless enthusiast
32:43prompted the next question
32:46are you a king
32:48one can fancy
32:50the scornful
32:51emphasis
32:52on you
32:54and can understand
32:55how grossly absurd
32:57the notion
32:58of his prisoners
32:58being a king
32:59must have seemed
33:00to him
33:04having made clear
33:06the parts
33:06of the sense
33:07in which the
33:07vowel
33:08was to be taken
33:09our lord
33:10answered plainly
33:11yes
33:14thus before
33:15the high priest
33:16he declared
33:16himself to be
33:17the son of god
33:18and before
33:19Pilate he claimed
33:20to be king
33:21at each tribunal
33:22putting forward
33:23the claim
33:24which was competent
33:25to examine
33:27and alas
33:28at each meeting
33:29similar levity
33:30and refusal
33:31to inquire
33:31seriously
33:32into the validity
33:33of the claim
33:36the solemn
33:37revelation
33:38to Pilate
33:38of the true
33:39nature
33:39of his kingdom
33:40and of himself
33:41the king
33:42fell on careless
33:43ears
33:45a deeper mystery
33:47than Pilate
33:47dreamt
33:48than Pilate
33:50dreamt of
33:50lay beneath
33:51the double
33:52designation
33:52of his origin
33:54for he had
33:55not only been
33:55born like
33:56other men
33:56but had come
33:58into the world
33:58having come
33:59forth from
34:00the father
34:00and having
34:02been before
34:03he was born
34:06it was
34:08barely possible
34:09that Pilate
34:10could apprehend
34:11the meaning
34:12of that duplication
34:14but some
34:15vague impression
34:16of a mysterious
34:17personality
34:17might just
34:19touch him
34:19and Jesus
34:21would not
34:21have fully
34:22expressed
34:22his own
34:23consciousness
34:24if he had
34:25simply said
34:25I was born
34:29let us see
34:30that we
34:30keep
34:31firm hold
34:32of which
34:33that utterance
34:34applies
34:35and declares
34:39the end
34:40the end of the
34:40incarnation
34:41is to bear
34:42witness
34:42to the truth
34:43that witness
34:44is the one
34:45weapon
34:45by which
34:46Christ's
34:46kingdom
34:46is established
34:48that witness
34:49is not given
34:50by words
34:51alone
34:51precious
34:52as these
34:52are
34:53but by
34:54deeds
34:54which are
34:55more than
34:55words
34:56these
34:57witnessing
34:58deeds
34:58are not
34:59complete
34:59until
35:00Calvary
35:00and the
35:01empty
35:01grave
35:02and
35:02Olivet
35:02have
35:03witnessed
35:03at once
35:04to the
35:05perfect
35:05incarnation
35:06of divine
35:06love
35:07to the
35:08perfect
35:08sacrifice
35:09for the
35:09world's
35:09sin
35:10to the
35:10victor
35:11over death
35:11and to the
35:12opening of
35:13heaven
35:13to all
35:13believers
35:16Jesus
35:17is the
35:17faithful
35:18and true
35:18witness
35:18as John
35:19calls him
35:20not without
35:22reminiscences
35:22of this
35:23passage
35:23just because
35:25he is the
35:26first begotten
35:26of the
35:27dead
35:29as here
35:30he told
35:31Pilate
35:31that he
35:32was a
35:32king
35:33because a
35:34witness
35:34so John
35:35in the
35:36passage
35:36referred to
35:37bases his
35:38being
35:39prince of
35:40the kings
35:40of the
35:41earth
35:41on the
35:42same
35:42fact
35:46how little
35:47Pilate
35:47knew that
35:48he was
35:48standing
35:48at the
35:49very
35:49crisis
35:49of his
35:50fate
35:52yielding
35:52to the
35:53impression
35:53that was
35:53slightly
35:54touching
35:54his
35:54heart
35:55and
35:55conscience
35:56and he
35:57too
35:57might
35:57have
35:57heard
35:58Christ's
35:58voice
36:00but he
36:00was not
36:01of the
36:02truth
36:02although
36:03he might
36:04have been
36:04had he
36:05will
36:05and so
36:06the words
36:07were nothing
36:07but wind
36:07to him
36:08and he
36:09brushed
36:09aside
36:10the mist
36:10as he
36:11thought it
36:11with the
36:12light
36:12question
36:13which summed
36:13up to
36:14a Roman
36:14of the
36:15world's
36:16indifference
36:16to ideas
36:17and a
36:18belief in
36:19solid facts
36:19like legions
36:20and swords
36:23what is
36:24the truth
36:25may be
36:26the cry
36:26of a
36:26seeking
36:27soul
36:27or the
36:28sneer
36:29of a
36:29confirmed
36:30sceptic
36:31or the
36:32shrug
36:32of indifference
36:33of the
36:34practical
36:34man
36:37it was
36:38the last
36:38in
36:38Pilate's
36:39case
36:39as is
36:40shown
36:40by his
36:41not
36:41waiting
36:41for an
36:42answer
36:42but ending
36:43the conversation
36:44with it
36:44as a
36:45last
36:45shot
36:47it meant
36:48too
36:48that he
36:49was quite
36:49certain
36:50that this
36:50man
36:50with his
36:51high
36:52strained
36:52impractical
36:53talk
36:53of a
36:53kingdom
36:54resting
36:55on a
36:55filmy
36:55nothing
36:56was
36:57absolutely
36:57harmless
37:00therefore
37:00the only
37:01just thing
37:01for him
37:02to have
37:02done
37:02was to
37:03have
37:03gone
37:03out
37:03to
37:04the
37:04impatient
37:04crowd
37:05and said
37:05so
37:05and refused
37:07flatly
37:07to do
37:08the dirty
37:08work
37:08of the
37:09priests
37:09for them
37:09by killing
37:10an
37:11innocent
37:11man
37:15but he
37:16was too
37:16much a
37:16coward
37:17for that
37:17and no
37:18doubt
37:18thought
37:19that the
37:20murder
37:20of one
37:20poor
37:21Jew
37:21was a
37:22small
37:22price
37:22to pay
37:23for
37:23popularity
37:23with his
37:24troublesome
37:24subjects
37:28but
37:28like all
37:29weak men
37:30he was not
37:30easy in his
37:31conscience
37:32and he would
37:33go on to
37:33make a futile
37:34attempt
37:34to get the
37:35right thing
37:35done
37:37and yet
37:38not to
37:38suffer
37:39for its
37:39doom
37:41the
37:42rejection
37:43of
37:43rabbus
37:44is
37:44touched
37:44on
37:45very
37:45lightly
37:45by
37:46John
37:46and we
37:47may
37:47leave it
37:48unnoticed
37:48here
37:49the great
37:50contribution
37:51to our
37:51knowledge
37:52which
37:52John
37:52makes
