12:52Now a certain man named Lazarus was sick.
12:55He was from Bethany, the village where Mary and her sister Martha lived.
13:01Now it had been Mary who anointed the Lord with perfumed oil,
13:05and wiped his feet dry with her hair.
13:07Whose brother Lazarus was sick.
13:11So the sisters sent a message to Jesus.
13:14Lord, look, the one you love is sick.
13:18When Jesus heard this, he said,
13:21This sickness will not lead to death, but to God's glory,
13:25so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.
13:31Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
13:36So when he heard that Lazarus was sick,
13:38he remained in the place where he was for two more days.
13:44Then, after this, he said to his disciples,
13:47Let us go once more to Judea.
13:51The disciples replied,
13:53Rabbi, the Jewish leaders were just now trying to stone you to death.
13:57Are you going there again?
14:00Jesus replied,
14:02Are there not twelve hours in the day?
14:05If anyone walks around in the day time,
14:07he does not stumble,
14:08because he sees the light of this world.
14:11But if anyone walks around at night,
14:14he stumbles,
14:15because the light is not in him.
14:21After this, he said,
14:23Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep,
14:26but I am going there to awaken him.
14:30The disciples replied,
14:31But Lord, if he has fallen asleep,
14:33he will recover.
14:35Now Jesus had been talking about his death,
14:38but they thought that he had been talking about real sleep.
14:43Then Jesus told them openly,
14:46Lazarus has died,
14:48and I am glad for your sake that I was not there,
14:51so that you may believe.
14:53But let us go to him.
14:56So Thomas, called Didymus,
14:58said to his fellow disciples,
15:00Let us go too,
15:02that we may die with him.
15:07This is the word of the Lord.
15:09Thanks be to God.
15:15We often do not sufficiently consider sickness
15:18in a Christian light.
15:21Surely the failure of health is,
15:23and will ever be,
15:24it deemed to be a misfortune to any man.
15:29It would be going counter to the current of nature,
15:31to attempt to think of it in any other way.
15:34But at this point,
15:36comes in the difference between
15:37the man of the world and the Christian.
15:39The man of the world looks upon sickness
15:42simply as a misfortune,
15:44and nothing more.
15:47Yes, the Christian regards sickness
15:49as a misfortune as a misfortune as well.
15:52But it is only his infirmity that he thus regards it.
15:58He may speak thus,
15:59but his faith corrects him as he speaks,
16:02and the stronger it becomes,
16:04the more prevalent,
16:05the more it will correct him,
16:07until he ceases to think
16:09and speak of sickness as a misfortune,
16:12until the current of nature is turned,
16:14and the sacred fountain of his thoughts
16:16looks upwards and flows not with the world.
16:23The blessed uses of adversity
16:25have been sung and spoken
16:27even by the thoughtful ones of this world,
16:29and how much more of them
16:31do we Christians know?
16:34How often have we seen a man enter into sickness,
16:37a giant in the strength of nature,
16:39but a babe in grace?
16:40And how often has the same man
16:43come out of it,
16:44frustrated in deep,
16:46shattered for the world and its uses,
16:48but mighty in spiritual achievement,
16:51victor of himself,
16:53victor of the world?
16:55What wonderful are the reminders
16:57at such a time
16:58of things lost,
17:00past words who sound
17:01as long gone out of memory,
17:04bringing up out of the depths
17:06of the memory of hidden knowledge,
17:08the life which gave formalities
17:11suddenly become clothed,
17:16the divinity which begins
17:18to stir among long-laid-up texts,
17:22the real conflict
17:23about self-deceit and pride
17:25in one who has only been talking
17:27about such a conflict
17:28all his life,
17:31the dropping away
17:32of exaggerated phrases
17:33of self-loathing
17:34and of confidence in God,
17:37and the coming,
17:38like the flesh of a little child,
17:39to real utterances
17:41of self-abasement,
17:43and the first genuine
17:44whisperings of
17:46Abba, Baba.
17:50To how many of us
17:51sickness may be
17:53the sanctuary of earth,
17:56to how many
17:57the vestibule of heaven.
18:02The first and most obvious
18:03thought which the text
18:05presents to us
18:06is that of the
18:07predestination of life.
18:10God has marked out
18:11beforehand the length of life.
18:14This was true
18:15first and foremost
18:16of the life of Christ.
18:17His day had its 12 hours.
18:20In the way in which
18:21he walked,
18:22he walked in daylight
18:23until the 12th hour.
18:25It is true of us.
18:27God knows exactly
18:28the length of our day
18:29and therefore
18:30the length of our hour.
18:32The day shall run its course,
18:34whether the season
18:35be winter or summer,
18:37whether the hour
18:37be of 30 minutes
18:38or 60.
18:40It is an encouragement
18:42and call to confidence.
18:44Do not be afraid
18:45to go hither and thither
18:46the summons of duty.
18:48Do not be afraid
18:49of snare or terror
18:50or of accident
18:51or infection.
18:52Your day has its 12 hours.
18:55You will neither
18:56add thereto
18:56or diminish from them.
19:00It is a second
19:01and perhaps
19:02less obvious thought
19:03of the completeness
19:05of life.
19:06We must cast away
19:08as Christians
19:08the common measurement
19:09of time.
19:11Christ's life on earth
19:13was a short life.
19:14His hour
19:15was but of the length
19:16of two or three years.
19:18God counts not
19:20but weighs the hours.
19:22Christ's three years
19:23of speech
19:24had in them
19:25the whole virtue
19:26of the world
19:26for two eternities.
19:29Christ's 30 years
19:30of listening
19:31were not the prelude
19:32only.
19:33They were the condition
19:34of the three.
19:38A third thought
19:39lying not so far
19:40from the last
19:41is that of the unity
19:43of life.
19:44God sees the day
19:46as one.
19:47When God writes
19:48an epitaph
19:48he does so
19:49in one line
19:50in one of two lines.
19:53He did
19:54which was evil
19:56or he did
19:57that which was good.
20:00And his mother's name

20:04The identification
20:05is complete.

20:09and not ambiguous.
20:11There were twelve
20:12hours in the man's
20:13day
20:13but the day
20:14was one.
20:18Let us consider
20:19the distribution
20:20of life.
20:22God sees it
20:23in its unity.
20:24He bids us
20:25see it rather
20:25in its manifoldness
20:27in its variety
20:28of opportunity
20:29and in its capacity
20:30and capability
20:32of good.
20:34Economize
20:35Determine
20:36to economize
20:37time
20:37give up something
20:38some fragments
20:39some particle
20:40of one of these
20:41twelve hours
20:42to God and Christ
20:43to your soul
20:44and to eternity.
20:46Do it in the name
20:47of God.
20:48Do it for your soul's
20:49health's sake
20:50and it shall not
20:51lose his reward.
20:56Such a simple message
20:58a short prayer
20:59indeed
20:59but sent by the
21:01messenger

21:02land for Jesus

21:39then why
21:40do we need
21:41to pray?

21:44need to send
21:45the message
21:45to Jesus?
21:48In short
21:49they did not
21:49need to
21:51but God
21:52waits upon
21:52our asking
21:54come to
21:54me
21:55he commands
21:56when we
21:56are burdened
