Willard and Dibs react to Kay Adams saying that tomorrow's game vs. the Rams is the biggest regular season game of Kyle Shanahan's career as head coach of the 49ers. Agree?
Transcript
00:00How big of a year is this for Kyle Shanahan?
00:04Oh, it's a must win, Mark.
00:06What are we doing?
00:07Well, no, like, how is it?
00:09I get it.
00:10Do you?
00:11Because.
00:11I do, because I ran down the list before of coaches who have been with the same team for
00:1610 or more years, and how'd that work out for you?
00:20Andy Reid is one of the most prominent ones in 14 years in Philly, and eventually he had
00:25to go, and he had to go and go to Kansas City and win three Super Bowls.
00:29So, is it that big for Kyle Shanahan?
00:32I don't quite see it that way.
00:33I'm with you.
00:34I think my answer would be maybe not as big as a lot of people seem to think, but there's
00:40buzzy stuff going on out there, and I thought we could have an interesting conversation with
00:45the audience on how you see that.
00:48It's year 10.
00:49It is year 10.
00:50So, how big of a year is this for Kyle Shanahan?
00:53In the wake of people talking about wobbly ownership, Jason LaConfora comes on with the
01:01Joes this morning and kind of starts the idea of, hey, stop worrying about if the Niners
01:07are going to move on from Kyle, and what if Kyle moves on from the Niners?
01:11Now, Jason has been out in the streets for the better part of three, four, five days already
01:16going, hey, I'm hearing that there's a lot of crap going on behind the scenes.
01:21There's a lot going on.
01:24Mind you, Jason, for the better part of all of the month of August, he only seems to talk
01:30to people who think that everything, the wheels are coming off from the inside out with the
01:36Niners.
01:37I mean, these players, they're getting old, it's one last ride, he probably has a point
01:44in there somewhere he's talking to somebody, I'm not saying Jason's not tapped in, I am
01:49going to say, though, that Jason, who's been on this show many times, seems to be an angry
01:55dude.
01:56He's like, that just seems to be what kind of floats his boat, which is fine.
02:01Jason's been an NFL reporter for a really long time.
02:04Now, he's a professional, I hate the Baltimore Orioles on social media guy.
02:09I don't know why he got, like, he, you want to talk about somebody who will pants you in
02:15the town square.
02:16Go read his commentary.
02:18Oh, I love his commentary.
02:19I mean, that's...
02:20He's a Baltimore guy.
02:21Right.
02:22And so he's had it up to here with the Orioles.
02:24Right, but Jason is there for the, it's fallen all apart at the top conversation.
02:30Niners are not the only team in his crosshairs.
02:32So, okay.
02:34But then there was this.
02:36What do you think of this?
02:37Kay Adams, who I really like.
02:38I think she's a wonderful interviewer, up in Adams FanDuel.
02:42Check this out.
02:44What she said tomorrow night, or Friday morning, however you want to say it, means for Kyle Shanahan.
02:52This Rams-Niners week one regular season game is the most important regular season game in
02:58Kyle Shanahan's era as the head coach in San Francisco.
03:01I really mean that.
03:02I know you're going to say it's week one.
03:03I know you're going to say the jet lag.
03:06It's so weird.
03:07It's just week one.
03:07I'm just...
03:08You have to remind everybody right now who the F you are, faithful.
03:12And then you can get all these other fans in this gorgeous city and around the world
03:15watching on board.
03:16International stage, 100,000 plus in the crowd, everyone watching around the world.
03:21The day after the Seahawks launched their defense of their title and going up against
03:26the Rams, who are so hyped, deservedly so, and are the class of the NFL.
03:31I don't know how many more chances you're going to have to win with this core of great
03:34players.
03:34So, you better do it.
03:36Remind everybody who you are.
03:37And the division be damned.
03:39The substation be damned.
03:40You have to find a way week one on the road.
03:43And I think they can.
03:44Okay.
03:45To me, I know a lot of people will just immediately dismiss the commentary.
03:51To me, there's a lot of fascinating stuff in there.
03:54But the idea, like, you go first.
03:58This is the biggest regular season game in the Kyle Shanahan 49ers era.
04:03No, it's not.
04:04And it probably isn't even in the top 20.
04:08And I'm not going to go through every single game and every single year that he's been there.
04:12But it's week one.
04:13And as I underscored in the crossover, the Patriots lost to the Raiders last year in week one.
04:19And then they fell to one and two when they couldn't get over on Pittsburgh.
04:23And so, yeah, they went on to win, I think, 11 or 12 of their last 13.
04:28And it turned out they were awesome.
04:30And they got breaks.
04:31And they went to the Super Bowl.
04:32So, week one is never, ever going to be that ultra important.
04:37Now, in this case, you're facing McVay.
04:40And you're taking on the Rams in Australia.
04:43And division games are always worth double, they say.
04:46That's the old cliche.
04:47So, yeah, it's a big game.
04:48It's a big game.
04:49Because it's the Rams.
04:50But it's not even close to the biggest game in his tenure.
04:53Well, I mean, look.
04:54I can immediately off just the top of my mind, without even thinking about this, I can come
04:59up with three that stand out to me that dwarf tomorrow night.
05:03That Eagles game three years ago where Debo Samuel went crazy.
05:07And the Niners essentially took the hearts out of the Eagles' chest and left them at the
05:1350-yard line.
05:14Remember the Eagles?
05:15I think it had one loss coming in.
05:17You called it, too.
05:18And I'm like, this is it.
05:19Like, this is a paper tiger.
05:22The Niners are going to go in there.
05:23They're going to win the game.
05:24They won by a ton.
05:2542-19.
05:26And the Eagles only won one more game the rest of the way and got knocked out of the
05:29playoffs in the very first round.
05:31So, there was that one.
05:32But let's not forget, how about the very end of the regular season twice?
05:36What about Dre Greenlaw's tackle at the one that gained the Niners the one seed en route
05:42to the Super Bowl?
05:42What about a couple years later, Jimmy Garoppolo gets the ball, two-minute drill, Niners trail
05:49at SoFi against the Rams and must go score or they miss the playoffs.
05:55And they did.
05:57They went and they scored and they won and they went to the playoffs and went all the
06:01way to the NFC title game only to have Jaquastitard drop an interception and they lost in the
06:05NFC title game.
06:06Jawan Jennings with the touchdown with 26 seconds left from Jimmy Garoppolo.
06:11You're talking about this game tomorrow night is bigger than those?
06:13No.
06:14Come on, man.
06:15I mean, I don't see it that way.
06:17And I love the hyperbole and I love the fact that she's putting it out there with this much
06:21pressure.
06:22And the one part about her comment that you played is, you know, show the league who you
06:27are.
06:27And I get that because, you know, it's Shanahan against McVay.
06:30It's the boy genius.
06:31I can see the other boy genius.
06:33And so you obviously want to prove that you are as good as these teams.
06:37Can I point out something that you just said, though, that she didn't.
06:41You said it right.
06:43You said, let's show the world who we are.
06:47She kept saying, remind the world who you are.
06:51OK, OK, I got that wrong.
06:52No, that's fine.
06:53I find what you said to be the right one.
06:56That's an important distinction to me because of the point I just made on the crossover.
07:01I do not believe that the start of NFL seasons are a carryover from the year before.
07:06We're not reminding anybody of anything like this is a new team.
07:11This is a completely what are we reminding you of here?
07:16How about if I remind you of this?
07:17When we last saw you, a bunch of people who play tomorrow night weren't playing.
07:21Some of them weren't on the team.
07:22Osa, Stribling, we can keep going.
07:25And a lot of them who are on the team, I left out Mike Evans.
07:30A lot of them who are on the team, Nick Bosa, Fred Warner, George Kittle,
07:34weren't playing the last time we saw the Niners.
07:36So this is not about reminding.
07:38This, to me, is about establishing who you are.
07:42And I mean that for the Rams and Seahawks as well.
07:45I am very mindful of these two teams who most say are the best two teams in the league.
07:51Like, this is week one.
07:53Again, they need to establish something too.
07:56That's going to be my line all night.
07:58Kenneth Walker doesn't play tonight and A.J. Brown does.
08:01These are different football teams.
08:04Completely different.
08:05Whole new season.
08:07Target on back type situations now.
08:10And so they've got to go reestablish and go on their own healthy, connected journey to see if they can
08:18reposition themselves to go after it again.
08:21Well, in Seattle trying to defend the championship and the Rams are trying to defend their unbelievably short odds as
08:28favorites to win the NFL.
08:30So you're right about targets on the back.
08:32And for the Niners, it's not a free swing at it because it's a divisional game and you want to
08:37go out there and win.
08:38And, you know, you devoted yourself to be there a week early to get fully ready for this ball game.
08:42But if worse comes to worst and, you know, put injuries aside, but you went all the way down there
08:47and you lose to the Rams.
08:49Well, you're 0-1 and 0-1 teams have been able to make it to the Super Bowl.
08:53I don't know that any team that we see play this week will be the team that they are now
08:59when we get to December.
09:02None of them.
09:03No, it's impossible.
09:04None of them.
09:04Right.
