00:05My take is Kyle Shanahan's very different, I believe.
00:11And I don't know him.
00:11I know you think that I stay in his guest house, and I do,
00:14but we don't interact very much.
00:16I got my own refrigerator back there.
00:21So I think he's different than what the perception of him is.
00:25How many times have you heard, great coordinator.
00:30I don't know if this guy's head coach material.
00:32Not a leader of men.
00:33Right.
00:34That's what you hear.
00:35And I just have been thinking in my mind about other examples of non-championship
00:40head coaches who eventually get kind of having their fan base get tired of them.
00:46And the carrot, as Loneal would call him, Jason Garrett,
00:50he's a great example where he won 56% of his games,
00:54and they won two playoff games in nine and a half years.
00:57Enough.
00:59You got to go.
01:00The McDermott one is the most fascinating one because he won two of every three games.
01:04Right.
01:056-62 winning percentage.
01:078-8 in the playoffs.
01:09But the thinking was you guys were good enough to do better than eight.
01:13Eight playoff wins in eight appearances.
01:16That means one time you won two games.
01:19Actually, two times.
01:20And that's it.
01:22To me, we got to wait and see how this plays out.
01:25And I think I've said this to you before.
01:26The McDermott thing feels to me like a Mark Jackson type of a thing.
01:30Like you built this.
01:32You helped build this.
01:34You got it to a certain spot.
01:36But we're going to need somebody to come in and tweak this thing
01:39and roll it over the top so that the ball can actually foul into the cup.
01:43And, like, I don't know that Joe Brady's going to do that.
01:46The Bills last week looked exactly like McDermott's Bills.
01:50Hey, we've got good quarterback.
01:51What else you got?
01:52Not much.
01:53But we've got really great quarterback.
01:54And we can beat you, but we can also lose to you.
01:58I don't know if that's going to work out in the end, but we'll see.

02:04Josh Allen needs a defense.
02:06And he doesn't have one.
02:08Brock Purdy's got a defense.
02:11And Matt Stafford's got a defense.
02:13Sam Donald's got a defense.
02:16And there are a few others out there as well.
02:18Patrick Mahomes has a defense.

02:20And, I mean, as we get deeper in the season,
02:22we can actually see who has a defense.
02:24And I was listening to D'Amico Ryans earlier.
02:27The midday show was playing Sounds of the Week.
02:29And he was basically saying,
02:31just because we were a good defense last year
02:33doesn't mean we're a good defense this year.
02:35You've got to go out there and put your stamp on it.
02:38And so one week in,
02:39and he even was talking about last year against Buffalo,
02:41where they had two, if not three, takeaways.
02:44And this past Sunday, they had no takeaways.
02:47So D'Amico's not ripping the team.
02:49But what he said, I think, is a good reminder to all of us that,
02:53and you've said this, last year is not this year.
02:55And so, you know,
02:56Arizona could actually be a better team than we think.
02:59It's a new year.
03:00They have a new head coach.
03:02The Raiders, I think, are similar.
03:03New head coach, new quarterback, new team, new season.
03:07They have the ability, they're allowed to be better than we think.
03:12They are both 1-0.
03:13But what we also don't know about teams is who did you play?
03:17And how much did that come into play
03:20with the fact that you played well last week?
03:22And we think we know, but we don't know on that end either.
03:26In other words, you know what I mean?
03:27Like, we're so impressed by the Niners right now.
03:30This sounds stupid, but what if the Rams aren't good?
03:34What if they're not?
03:36I don't know.
03:37What if Matt Stafford got old overnight,
03:38and Miles Garrett and Aaron Donald are going to be dogged by injury all year?
03:42What if?
03:43That's very possible.
03:44And then they're not that good of a team.
03:45What if Devontae Adams got old overnight?
03:48Then maybe they're just kind of good.
03:50Right.
03:51But not the great team that we thought they were going to be.

03:54This has got to play out.
03:55Well, the odds make it is, and I think the consensus was, you know,
03:58this team, we're going to see you at home in the Super Bowl on Valentine's Day
04:01because look at that roster on paper.

04:04So, on paper, they're the best team in football.
04:07On the field through week one, they're not.
04:10They're maybe, I don't know, the 10th best team because they played a good team
04:13and they barely showed up.
04:15I think they're the second lowest scoring team in football.
04:17I think that's who they are right now.

04:26One of them's fresh and one of them's from a few months ago.

04:33First of all, this is not about his X's and O's.
04:37This is about the other stuff, according to Trent Silverback.
04:43The fact that he made us competitive,
04:45the fact that we believed that we could go win a Super Bowl.
04:49Like, we literally, he made us believe.
04:53And it's not because of what we had in the locker room,
04:56but it was because of what we had in the coach,
04:58because of how he broke down the game and how he, you know,
05:01just understood his team and when to give days off
05:05and when to push us through the times we want days off.
05:08And, you know, he just, he got a keen understanding
05:10for, like, how to treat a locker room
05:12and, like, not sweating the small shit,
05:14but, like, making sure everybody is accountable
05:16and making sure that we all play with that same intensity.
05:20And if you don't, you're going to get called out.
05:22You know, and he ain't going to MF you in front of everybody.
05:24He's going to do it in his own way,
05:26but it makes you feel like, damn, like, I'm letting him down.
05:30I need to be accountable.
05:31Not so much, well, I'm going to do it so he don't yell,
05:33but it's like, damn, I'm going to do it
05:34because I don't want to let him down.
05:36I know he's put his everything into this.
05:39I know he trusts me with this.
05:40Like, I want to pay him back by being productive
05:43and executing his game plan.
05:44I love that, bro.
05:45You know, and that's what he instills in us.
05:47So listen to that.

06:36It's like, no, you have to have the culture built,
06:39and you have to have the leaders on your team
06:41be able to hold themselves and everyone else accountable.

06:56but, like, I came here at a 10-year vet.
06:59Like, I learned more just in that 30-minute team meeting
07:03that we had with Kyle, breaking down the next opponent.
07:05I learned more football in that time than I did

07:09And you can ask anybody.
07:12They'll tell you the same thing.
07:13He teaches you about the way he breaks it down
07:16is literally, like, something you've never seen,
07:18like, down to, like, how the cornerback,
07:21like, where his weight is and just the way
07:23he diagnosed football is really,
07:25I hate that everybody can't witness it.
07:27You know, I hate that everybody can't,
07:29because then it would be no question
07:31who's the best coach in the league.
07:33You know, everybody would understand why.
07:34I hate that we're the only ones that get to see that,
07:37but, you know, he, I mean,
07:38I can see him talking about Kyle all day.

08:15but they don't teach it exactly the right way.
08:17And so the precision to detail
08:20that Kyle Shanahan brings to his offense,
08:22and once you get guys to buy in,
08:24it's tough to stop.

08:31who did not play for Kyle.

12:19And he wanted to weigh in on what makes Kyle Shanahan so good.
12:24There's no one better than Kyle Shanahan to open up windows.
12:27When I was doing research for this,
12:28I never played for Kyle,
12:29but I talked to guys that did.
12:31I'm like,
12:31why is he such an elite game planner?
12:33Because everyone's trying to run his place.
12:35The difference is they don't have Kyle Shanahan teaching and calling the plays.
12:39So that's the difference.
12:39He said he knows exactly what everyone's responsibility is on the defense and the game plan.
12:45There's no wasted plays.
12:47Everything is calculated and everything is designed to create stress on the defensive responsibility on the other side of the
12:53ball.
12:53There's never a playoff.
12:54There's never a wasted play.
12:56Everything they do is with a purpose to stress the responsibility so they cannot be right.
13:00I've played for a lot of coaching staffs.
13:01I've been on some that I feel like the Eagles won that we won the Super Bowl.
13:04Outstanding game planning.
13:05But most of the time I'm on coaching staffs where they're looking at plays the week before.
13:09Oh, what did Kyle Shanahan run?
13:11Let's run that play.
13:12And when we run it, it's like, hey, your footwork's this.
13:14And they're just installing the play.
13:16They're not installing why this play is great.
13:18Why?
13:19Because Kyle Shanahan knows that stuff.
13:20That's why he's great.
13:21And when his team is healthy, they have a chance to go to the Super Bowl.
13:24The biggest thing throughout this year is,
13:26can they finally stay somewhat healthy?
13:28And do they have depth?
13:29Okay, and we know that aspect of it.
13:31But this opens my eyes.
13:32Nick Foles is not a niner.
13:34Nick Foles never even played for Kyle Shanahan.
13:37What the hell does he have in it to say this?
13:40Did you hear what he said there at the end?
13:42He essentially says all the other offensive coordinators around the league
13:46get to Tuesday and start asking each other,

13:53I would love to explore this.
13:58And I do think that the Niner fan base loves him.
14:01But I actually think in a way, they sort of,
14:05and maybe this is just the emotions of not winning the Super Bowl
14:07and being close and all that.
14:09No criticism here, but it's fascinating to me.

14:13but they don't seem to love him as much as the league.
14:16The league fawns over him.
14:18They make him sound like their version of Taylor Swift.
14:21We just want to wake up and follow him around
14:24and just follow his social media and see what he's doing
14:28so that we can dress like him and act like him
14:31and do the same things that he does.
14:33This is what the league sounds like.
14:35They're shanties.
14:36They're not swifties.
14:37They're shanties.
14:38And what he said in that breakdown I think is so true
14:41where you can look at the film and say,
14:43okay, I see the play that they ran,
14:45so we're going to put that in.
14:46But the reason why you run it and when you run it
14:49and all the attention to detail stuff of what other plays
14:53you're going to do that look just like it
14:55that aren't the same sort of play itself.
14:58The formation may look the same.
14:59The motion may be the same,
15:01but you basically are setting a team up
15:03for a play that looks like that in the second half
15:07that's totally different.
15:08And I think about last year
15:09where you had the Juwan Jennings option pass
15:13that ultimately swung the game against Philadelphia.
15:15That was a play that had been set up
15:17not only in that game,
15:18but throughout the course of the year
15:20where you've run that motion,
15:22you've run that type of play,
15:23but you haven't done it to where you get the ball
15:26to your wide receiver who was a former quarterback
15:28in high school or even college.
15:30And so you set that up throughout the year
15:32and then finally you dust off that play
15:35when you need it most,
15:36you pull it out,
15:37you execute it,
15:38and you win.

16:51and the other Kubiak now,
16:52whatever.
16:53But it's been Shanahan
16:54in the play sheet
16:55for now year 10.
16:57So for me,
16:58that continuity trumps everything.

17:00I want him to be the coach
17:02because he's been here
17:03and they have a system
17:04and it's worked.
17:05I think that's all fair.
17:06However,
17:07when you use the word continuity,
17:08I think a lot of fans
17:11don't use that word.
17:13They sort of use
17:16bored,
17:17tiresome.
17:19Well then you're just not,
17:20you're not paying enough attention
17:21in my opinion.

17:24why don't we do a cross-reference
17:26of him and Steve Kerr.

17:29a little bit longer.
17:30Steve Kerr has four championships.

17:35some warrior fan fatigue

17:51on the public journey

18:26the fan base
18:26to either refute

18:28or realize
18:30how special that is.
18:32Because if you do look
18:33around the league,
18:34there are a lot of coaches
18:35who've been with their team
18:36for less time.
18:39Significantly in some cases.
18:41Less time than Kyle Shanahan.
18:42And even though
18:43they win more games
18:44than they lose,
18:45Dan Campbell,
18:46Mike LaFleur,
18:47maybe even Jim Harbaugh,
18:50there's some fatigue
18:51growing fast.
18:53Yes,
18:53and only,
18:54I think Andy Reid
18:55is the only coach
18:56who has more current tenure.
18:58And he's tied with McVay
19:00because John Harbaugh
19:01was ahead of him,
19:02but he's now gone.
19:03And I think John Harbaugh
19:04becomes a really interesting example
19:07because ultimately,
19:08they kind of got fatigued
19:10of him
19:11and he won
19:11a Super Bowl.
19:12And John Harbaugh
19:13was consistently good
19:15year in and year out.
19:16You had Lamar Jackson
19:17who got better.
19:19Always good special teams.
19:20You always drafted well.
19:21Your defense was nasty.
19:23And he won a lot more games
19:24than he lost.
19:25And then you got
19:26to last year
19:27and it was,
19:27okay,
19:28it's time to part ways.
19:29I mean,
19:29for me,
19:30it's an example of,
19:31you know,
19:31we always have this conversation.
19:33A lot of people
19:34like to use the phrase
19:35Super Bowl or bust.
19:36I kind of think of it
19:37more in terms of like,
19:39what do you take
19:39from a season
19:40that doesn't go all the way?
19:42Is there anything
19:43that you can take from it?
19:44A lot of people
19:45would be like,
19:45no,
19:46like it's just,
19:46it's a lost season.
19:47If you don't win
19:48the whole thing,
19:49then that's it.

19:51you don't get anything
19:51out of it.
19:52I feel right now
19:54with the Niners
19:55and with Kyle Shanahan,
19:56I feel the dividends
19:59from last year.
20:00And they did not win it all.
20:02They did not even make
20:02the NFC title game.
20:04But the dividends
20:05of last year,

20:07plus a road playoff win
20:08with so many
20:09of your players hurt
20:10to me very much
20:13changed the thought process
20:15for many.
20:16If you were on the fence
20:18about Kyle Shanahan,
20:19you joined him.
20:21He gained the respect
20:22of many,
20:23even though it may have been
20:25stubborn on the upload.
20:27And you arrive at now
20:29where I think most Niner fans
20:33are like,
20:33yeah,
20:34we don't,
20:34we don't ever want him gone.

20:37I know not everybody
20:38sees it that way.
20:39That was the vibe I got
20:40when we were talking
20:41to fans about it
20:42a couple of weeks ago.

20:49totally reflective
20:50of the vibe.
