00:00see her all the time over at News 5 Cleveland our good friend Cameron Justice joining us now
00:04Cammie how are you doing good how are you we're doing well uh I obviously I I started yesterday
00:12saying oh this isn't a game I'm very excited for it and then found myself maybe being the most
00:16excited in a preseason game that I had been uh probably in like the last three years listen you
00:21weren't disappointed then because that was a fun one it was good obviously a lot of questions to
00:28come off of it I did want to start because I know you got to talk to Luke Floria uh
00:33after the game
00:34obviously had the two touchdowns was pretty much a fingertip away from having a third touchdown in
00:39that game uh and it's a story that hits close to home for me I graduated with Luke from Menor
00:43do you think that he ends up making the roster I think he has a really good shot but I
00:49don't know
00:50because it's I think it truly depends on one how many receivers they decide to roster and two
00:58if he has enough of an edge over Malachi Corley if they if there's one of those two that has
01:06to be
01:06cut that's where the question marks are for me I think they have a solid locked in five receivers
01:12they've got Casey Concepcion and Denzel Boston obviously Jerry Judy obviously I think Isaiah Bond
01:18and Tylan Wallace are locks will they keep six will they keep seven that is what remains to be seen
01:25if
01:25they keep seven I think it's a high number to keep right uh but if they kept seven there's Luke
01:31Floria's thought if they keep six then I think it's a 50-50 between Floria and and Malachi Corley
01:38both can do special teams work I think it's the big picture overall body of work and how the Browns
01:45think that they have value not just as as a receiver but Luke Floria has put together such a strong
01:52summer I think it was it was really good to see after how his summer looked last year and then
01:57kind of got hampered with that hamstring injury that he that he sustained so for him to be healthy
02:02and kind of carry that workload over this year was really great and I would love to see him make
02:07the
02:07roster I also think Malachi Corley is a great player too and I would love to see him make the
02:11roster
02:11there's not enough spots for everybody so I think it's 50-50 right now in my mind I could see
02:16it going
02:17either way all right Kenny let's talk about uh the quarterbacks that we saw last night I mean Dylan
02:22Gabriel plays an entire half stat line wise definitely has the best performance uh from a
02:27Browns quarterback this preseason what did you think how did he look I was you know happy to see Dylan
02:34Gabriel put that together because thinking about all things aside it was as an individual had been a
02:43very tough summer right you see the reps that you you were getting in your rookie year reduced you're
02:51no longer in the conversation for the quarterback competition for the starting role that's as an
02:57individual got to be really difficult to to have to deal with and navigate and I think for him to
03:03be
03:04able to go through this summer knowing that all right that's not my role right now that's not how
03:11they see me but I still want to compete and be able to put that out there on tape in
03:15that preseason
03:15game it's really great for him I thought it was fun to watch I thought he was really great in
03:21his
03:21operations he just kind of looked sound like he understood what he needed to do and that was really
03:26really great I think that also helps with the players around him and I was happy that he was able
03:33to do that not just for himself but for the players around him and showcase and highlight guys like
03:38Luke Floria who are trying to make the team so any kind of preseason performance like that is is great
03:44for the individual it's great for the rest of the team especially when you're getting into those the
03:49second and third stringers and some of these guys that are on the bubble looking to to get over but
03:54I
03:54think for Dylan Gabriel it did two things one it solidified that okay he has an understanding of
03:59this offense and he can operate whether or not it's a second team third team guys that he's going
04:04against he's doing what he's being asked and he's doing it efficiently I also thought it showed that
04:11like there was a lot of questions like can he compete in the NFL I I heard online and and
04:17people
04:17in in the conversations in the discourse I think that maybe quieted it a little bit silenced that a
04:25little bit and showed okay he does have this is why he can operate and and whether that is
04:32fine for him to be a backup here and then solidify that as okay we've got something here that can
04:38continue to develop him and rely on him in some kind of backup role is that opens up an opportunity
04:43on another team and draws interest from another team if it doesn't work out on the Browns either way
04:48I think it was great for him and really good to see a quarterback who has gotten a limited role
04:54and had
04:54to take a back seat still kind of be able to to showcase what the Browns are looking to do
04:59with the regular season with their starters with their backups with their reserves with these guys
05:04and again Camp Justice with us here on the hotline and so I thought from his post game he was
05:10clear like
05:11just natural frustration from having to be in that he talked about a little bit and I thought he handled
05:15it very professionally but I thought it just showed through a little bit is it fair to kind of step
05:20away
05:20from this game and ask yourself the question on whether or not maybe he should have been a part of
05:26that conversation in a part of the competition for the quarterback one job I mean I mean everything
05:31hindsight's 2020 right you can look at that you can put that one game and you can say that absolutely
05:35but you also and I think Dylan talked about a little bit and has to understand Todd Duncan takes this
05:42rollover and he comes in with an idea of who he wants in his quarterback competition and if you open
05:48it up the way that it was how many complaints were there last year where there were four guys splitting
05:53reps and one guy not getting the reps not the first team reps like Shador Sanders was the only one
05:57last year
05:58that didn't get first team reps and it was a point of contention across the board everyone was upset about
06:03it
06:03everyone was upset that the reps were being split between Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett and Dylan Gabriel
06:09and then even even wasn't first team reps the reps was Shador Sanders it was a four-way quarterback competition
06:15no matter how fairly you thought it went there were four guys in that conversation
06:18when you reduce it down to two main starters that you know it's going to be between the two
06:23they at least get more of the of the reps right so they're splitting first team reps but they're
06:29getting them and I think that changes how the competition is and you get a better idea so I'm
06:34not mad at the fact that Todd Munkin came in to this job and identified two and it's unfortunate for
06:44Dylan that he was on the other end of the of the decision right on the outside looking in but
06:49then
06:51that's adversity and he he's taken the reps and there are days where none of the quarterbacks have
06:57looked very good in practices some really rough practice for the offense there are days where one
07:00of the quarterbacks will shine or all of the quarterbacks would shine so Dylan's had highs and
07:05lows in practices too with those limited reps but for him to be able to despite the decision from
07:10Todd Munkin go out there and put together a good final preseason game is really big but no I don't
07:16think that I would I don't think I would have changed it because we saw what happened when there was
07:21four
07:22and I think that's that's Todd Munkin's discretion of who he identifies for his team and so I like the
07:29approach because the alternative didn't go very well last year either so yeah there's no doubt about it
07:36I mean I'll ask you because this is now the question that's obviously up in the air I thought
07:42Taylor Green played pretty well last night as well do you think that this team would actually carry
07:48four quarterbacks into week one and if not more likely for Dylan Gabriel to be traded or on this
07:53roster when we get to week one I think that it's possible I don't think it's common obviously for
08:00teams to carry four quarterbacks but it's not out of the question in my mind there was a point in
08:07camp where I guess camp and obviously the regular roster the the 53-man rosters different there's a
08:12point in camp you know last year there's five quarterbacks like this this is something the team
08:18is navigating and if you are even a little concerned about the longevity of a player or the production of
08:28a player if you want the versatility that other guys have and the options and the flexibility
08:33then that might just be what you have to do because at the end of the day the quarterback is
08:39the biggest
08:40question mark on this team still we know who QB1 is but we don't know what that's going to look
08:44like
08:45we have no idea what kind of quarterback play we are going to get in week one when we watch
08:51the
08:51Browns take the field no idea it is all up in the air remains to be seen so with that
08:58said that's the
08:59biggest question mark it's the most important position on the team and so I wouldn't doubt
09:05that they would want to approach that with the versatility and the flexibility of having four
09:10quarterbacks on the roster it seems a little absurd and you kind of look at it and you're like well
09:15you
09:15got to decide right because four quarterbacks in the roster means one less player or two less
09:20players in another position and there are other question marks on this team there's the depth at
09:25cornerback there's the depth across the defensive line there's the starting lineup on the on the
09:33offensive line and what what that right side of the line is going to look like I think there's going
09:36to
09:36be some changes as the season goes on and you're going to see some some tweaks on that side just
09:41because they're still figuring that out I think a little bit they're going to have their set five but
09:45I don't think that it might be that way in weeks three four or five so all those other question
09:52marks are kind of at the mercy of what they do with the roster and how many quarterbacks they keep
09:58but I don't think it's out of the question because I've seen them do things like this in the past
10:03and I
10:03don't I don't think there is a solid answer which means I think that flexibility and versatility
10:08has to be there and again camp justice with us for Dylan in particular he obviously put good things
10:15on tape last night do you think that's going to lead to at least a team or two calling and
10:20trying
10:20to figure out what's there for Dylan or is that maybe something where you're waiting for cut down
10:24day and trying to see if he's going to be on this team or not you know it's hard to
10:30say I think that
10:32there were from what I've heard I think it was a little bit of a shock that Dylan the Browns
10:38drafted
10:39Dylan where they did last year not that they took him but just where they did and so I don't
10:45know
10:45what other teams at this point think of the value that he has I think putting some really good tape
10:51out there is great and he has the the football mind he really understands what an offense needs to be
11:00when he's getting coached up when he's going through playbooks and that's huge it's the other
11:05things some of them are intangible and some of them aren't that kind of shift where his value is I
11:11think he put some really good stuff out on tape and he clearly can play so I don't know if
11:17it's enough
11:18to draw interest from other teams especially when other teams know that the Browns are in their roster
11:24decisions and they they may just have to to cut somebody down right and so do you if you're another
11:30team do you swoop in offer anything do you just wait wait it out I don't know and I don't
11:38know if
11:39the Browns I think I think that I can't give you a solid answer because I could see them going
11:44either
11:45way of keeping those four and then it's not even a conversation or if they if they cut somebody maybe
11:50maybe it is Dylan because they're excited by the prospect of Taylor Green his athleticism his size
11:57and just being able to continue to work and develop him because he's got development ahead of him for
12:02sure but he also has some of those intangibles that you can't coach you can't teach he's got the speed
12:10the size and there's a lot of quarterbacks in the league that don't have that and so do you want
12:15to risk losing the development of that or do you want to risk losing somebody who really can get
12:23the concepts that you're giving them it's so hard for me to say because I just I don't know where
12:30their mind is in terms of like what they need or Todd Munkin made the quarterback competition kind of
12:36clear as he talked about a little bit more about what what he was valuing he talked all the time
12:42about
12:42like you know pre-snap and the cadence and all the stuff before the play getting the guys in and
12:47out
12:47of the huddle quickly and he talked about how Shador was growing in that but Deshaun was operating
12:53well in that so it doesn't surprise me that he named Deshaun the starter for week one because of
12:56that so we learned a little bit about how he was approaching it I don't know how he would be
13:01approaching a QB3 situation a practice squad situation because we haven't really talked to him a lot
13:07about the logistics behind him like the his his philosophy behind those decisions so it's hard
13:13for me to grasp which way they would go with that I we were talking a little bit there about
13:20Taylor green as well I mean obviously like you said there's development that needs to happen it was not
13:24a perfect performance yesterday but he definitely displayed something there at the legs do you think
13:29there is if they decide to to keep along on the active 53 uh potentially a role for him on
13:35game
13:35days even though it won't be starting quarterback I think you should like explore that especially like
13:40as you get into the season and he you get to work with him a little bit more just like
13:44even in the
13:45meeting rooms and going over film I think you could develop packages for him um and and because you're
13:53not getting the reps in practice right the first all the reps are going to go to the starter and
13:57that
13:57won't be him this year but maybe you can work him in for a couple things have him go in
14:02there for a
14:02package where he's he's mobile and using his athleticism to also get his feet wet a little bit
14:09more in in game action I could see it I wouldn't be opposed to that but you also don't want
14:14to you
14:16know baptize him by fire and and send him to the wolves you want him to develop uh if you
14:22can you're
14:22going to keep him on this team and you're going to really use the raw athleticism and and build and
14:28talent that he has you don't want to you don't want to ruin that I think that he's got a
14:32lot of
14:32untapped uh raw potential in him so maybe gradually I wouldn't be mad at that I can we got about
14:40a 90
14:41seconds here and I we all saw as I'm sure you did the reaction to Deshaun being named the starter
14:46I just right now how different do you feel the perception is between uh when it comes to Deshaun
14:52between the fans and the perception that is there for him in the locker room well I listen I think
14:58that these guys are are very professional they are very about getting a good product on the field
15:05and being good teammates uh so I I think 100 percent they're behind whatever decision happens in here
15:12and they just they they want to win they don't want to have the season that this team has had
15:17for the
15:17past two right they they want to bounce back so if Deshaun Watson's QB1 they're behind Deshaun Watson
15:23is QB1 I think the fan reception is different obviously because they're on the outside they don't
15:29they're not they're not teammates with him they're not sharing a space with him they're not seeing all
15:33the things uh that and and hearing from him directly every day about you know the journey that he's gone
15:39on
15:39through but they also have valid frustrations whether it is the personal that Deshaun talked about and the
15:46things outside of football that are valid reasons for fans to be upset uh with him being on the
15:52field or if it's the performance which as he's admitted has not been what has been expected of him
15:58and that's a valid reason for frustration and so fans are absolutely validated to be upset by this
16:05decision and seeing him out there I think the perception is definitely different but it's because
16:10these guys no matter who they are if they're close with Deshaun if they're friends with him
16:14or just share a locker room with him regardless they all want to have the same goal which is
16:21to get out there and win they they don't want to lose they don't want to be the team that
16:27people don't
16:27like that people want to play they don't want to be a laughingstock they want to be competitive
16:32competitive football team uh and so the frustrations have to from the fans have to stay external they
16:38can't dwell in them because that will impact what they do on the field so that's where I think the
16:43divide is uh and I don't think it's fair to put anything on on a player that the fans are
16:49feeling
16:50because it's it is a very different they're not no matter how you feel they're they're there wearing
16:55their colors wearing a uniform the team that signed them the team that drafted them looking to win
17:02and put a good product out there for fans fans have the history behind it they have there's nothing
17:07really they can do other than cheer or boo and so they voice what they feel uh and to get
17:13their
17:13point across so I think it's super valid no matter what and I think that Todd Munkin is right there's
17:19a lot of the the tension and the frustration would be dwindled with some good football not all of it
17:27because it's not all about the performance but I do think and I've said it for years since they
17:33traded for him a lot of it would be resolved with good football Kami we got to run but you
17:39know I
17:39always appreciate you setting aside our the time and giving us some really good stuff to react to
17:43and as we get closer and closer to week one hopefully we're talking again sometime soon
17:47thanks for having me on have a good night yep appreciate it Kami Justice News 5 Cleveland
