00:00if you're playing one of these things,
00:02it's not like the other with this quarterback room.
00:04It's obvious which one's not like the other.
00:05The problem in the room is Deshaun.
00:09Yeah, he's a two-ton boulder around the neck of the organization.
00:11He's got a bloated contract that you can't get off of right now.
00:15He isn't very good at football anymore at this point,
00:20and that is my opinion.
00:21I don't think he's very good at football anymore,
00:22despite what we saw in that game against the Bears,
00:25and despite the fact that Todd Munkin named him the starting quarterback,
00:27I don't think he's very good.
00:29So if the rest of the room, it's like, oh, encouraging young guy,
00:35Shidor Sanders, another young guy that, you know,
00:38there's some signs, and maybe he's a backup his whole career
00:41in Dylan Gabriel, but you feel like, you know,
00:43he could be on this roster, and you'd like to see what he could do
00:45with another year under his belt.
00:47And then Taylor Greene, who, again, as you alluded to,
00:50has all the raw traits and needs maybe some refining to get better.
00:53Like, in a perfect world, if you could just keep those three,
00:56it'd be like, okay, cool, like, this year's just a science experiment
01:01to figure out what we have in these three quarterbacks
01:03and then decide if we need to find another quarterback in 2027.
01:06But because Deshaun is here, and because they can't move off the contract,
01:10they're just kind of stuck with it, and one of them has to go.
01:13And what's so interesting about this, Dan, is, like,
01:15you have, there's different reasons why keeping Dylan or Talon makes sense.
01:24Like, Dylan was a third-round pick a year ago.
01:28Andrew Barry doesn't really like moving off of guys that he took,
01:32especially that early in a draft, in the top three rounds of a draft,
01:35so quickly when he thinks there's probably some ceiling
01:38that the person hasn't reached yet.
01:40And frankly, if the ceiling is a backup, I think they'd be okay with that.
01:44I think they kind of drafted him with that in mind, right?
01:46Of course.
01:46And then there's Talon, who's the more recent draft pick,
01:49but he's also a six-round pick,
01:51and six-round picks are never guaranteed anything anyway.
01:53So how he navigates this is going to be interesting
01:56because it's going to have to kind of go against some philosophy
01:59that he's always kind of leaned on,
02:00unless he does keep all four and decides, you know what,
02:04let's go into the season with this really abnormal setup
02:06at the quarterback position, which they could.
02:08But, I mean, given how the last two years have gone,
02:10really the last three years have gone,
02:12because even in 2023, five different quarterbacks played,
02:15maybe they do need to keep all four because they think,
02:17ah, yeah, we're going to see all these guys at some point.
02:20Like Taylor Greene, just pencil Taylor Greene in
02:23as your week 18 starter this year.
02:25God, I hope not.
02:27Especially for him, I hope not,
02:28because I think he's one of those guys where if he sat for a year,
02:31it would do wonders for him.
02:33Well, but there is value in getting tape at the end of the season,
02:35though, you know what I mean?
02:36Like there is value in like getting him a game or something
02:39at the end of the year just to like see.
02:40It doesn't have to be like the end-all be-all for judging him,
02:42obviously, but I don't know.
02:44But if he's not going anywhere,
02:46what's the value of said tape outside of for yourself?
02:49And not to mention for yourself,
02:50you're seeing that in practice anyhow.
02:53You're seeing how he's processing.
02:54I just think it's different in a game.
02:56You know what?
02:57And that I'll give you.
02:58Because there you've got guys at least going 100% at each other,
03:01where in practice you're going 80%.
03:03Right, right.
03:04That I agree with.
03:04It's the live bullets.
03:06But yeah, before we, real quick,
03:07just kind of bring this conversation to a point like where we're at in the conversation.
03:13It's like Andrew Barry is going to have to kind of go against something philosophically
03:17that he hasn't done in the past,
03:19and they have to sort of figure out what they're going to do.
03:22If they're only going to keep three,
03:23if you keep four, it's kind of, you know,
03:26that means you're taking from somewhere else.
03:28Where else are you going to take from?
03:29You know what I mean?
03:29Like we think it's so easy to just be like,
03:31ah, keep this guy, keep that guy.
03:32But you've got to remember, like, they want depth on the offensive line.
03:35They want depth on the defensive line.
03:36The cornerback room, I'm assuming they're going to add at least one guy from the outside.
03:39They did yesterday before the game even kicked off.
03:42So there's some different spots they've got to think about and look at as well,
03:45where I don't know if they can keep four quarterbacks.
03:47But we'll see what they kind of do here.
03:49And, you know, I think it ultimately could come down to maybe Dylan did enough to try to trade him,
03:55like you said, for a fourth-round pick or something like that.
03:57Or maybe Dylan's the one they try to pass through waivers
04:00because they think maybe he has a better chance of passing through.
04:03But I'd be shocked if they...
04:04See, I don't think Dylan Gabriel would pass through waivers.
04:06I don't think either of them would.
04:07I can't see it.
04:07I don't think him or Taylor would, which is why you might see Andrew Barry.
04:10He did it two years ago.
04:11He kept four initially, tried to trade one.
04:14Nobody took the bait, and he ended up just having to cut Tyler Huntley.
04:17But there was rumors, if you remember, that they were going to trade James at that time.
04:20I forgot about that.
04:20You're right.
04:21So I could see...
04:22I think that's how this is 100% going to play out.
04:24And then it'll just come down to, can they get a trade partner for somebody in this room?
04:28Yeah.
04:28And I got a feeling we're going to find a dance partner somewhere in between
04:31because it's quarterbacks.
04:32And especially when you're talking to a younger guy who's on a cheaper contract,
04:35whether it's between Shador Sanders or Dylan Gabriel,
04:39you can make some kind of move in there.
04:41Now, again, I cannot state enough.
04:44I believe it will be Dylan Gabriel who will be the odd man.
04:47And also, I'll say this part of it.
04:49I believe Dylan Gabriel is probably going to have himself a 10 to 15 year career around this league
04:54as well.
04:55I think he will have a Colt McCoy-like career where he'll be the backup in a whole bunch of
04:59places.
05:00And we'll see him find some modicum of success.
05:02But clearly, there's a ceiling.
05:04And so, I'm loving what's happening right now.
05:07I'd love seeing the success.
05:08Again, he made a preseason game watchable, which I walked in going,
05:11this is unwatchable.
05:13So, I will forever be thankful in that regard.
05:16Let's go to the phone lines.
05:17216-474-0092 if you want to get a hold of Spencer and myself.
05:20Tommy in Fort Myers.
05:21Good morning, Tommy.
05:24Good morning.
05:26What can we do for you, sir?
05:29I love your conversation here because I haven't heard any of this.
05:34Everything I've heard, at least, well, I haven't heard anything about trading Sanders
05:40and what we could get for that.
05:43My argument here is that Dylan Gabriel is the number two quarterback for any team in the whole league,
05:53I think, and you drafted him, you got him, you got your backup quarterback.
05:59You don't have to worry if the starter gets hurt, whoever it is next year or the year after.
06:05So, he can get in the game and he's totally prepared.
06:10Is that what you like about him over what you've seen from Shador at this point?
06:13Because that's what I was going to ask you is what makes you think this is the case that Dylan
06:16Gabriel is the better keeping?
06:17I don't like – what I've seen from Sanders is he's all or nothing.
06:22He can make the big plays, but he makes turnovers.
06:25I don't like the way he handles the ball.
06:27He could probably learn from the Joe Burrow, two hands on the ball rule, you know.
06:34That bothers me.
06:36You know, I don't know.
06:38Who knows?
06:38But I do know that Gabriel is the backup quarterback, and you got him.
06:42Why would you trade him?
06:44So, anyway, every time I listen to this station in the morning, I get frustrated because I never hear any
06:52discussion at all about trading Sanders.
06:56And that's all I wanted to say.
06:57So, maybe you guys can talk about that for a little bit.
07:01We'll see what we can do, Tommy.
07:02Appreciate the call.
07:03I mean, I think they hit on that a little bit this morning, but I mean – and I know
07:06we brought that into the conversation for a segment.
07:09Again, I'm not anticipating that Shador Sanders is going to get traded.
07:13But it's the NFL.
07:16Crazier things have happened.
07:17There's a reason why when we asked Andrew Barry at the owners' meetings, can you definitively say you're not going
07:22to trade Myles Garrett?
07:23He couldn't say – he couldn't answer that question.
07:26Yes, I can definitively say that because he didn't want to close that door.
07:29So, as much as Tom Munkin, again, stood there last night and said what we saw last night isn't going
07:34to impact the first-string quarterback or the second-string quarterback,
07:37you just never know what obviously could happen.
07:40And if somebody called up and was offering the right price – if somebody called up legitimately and offered a
07:47fourth-round pick or even a fifth-round pick,
07:49if you even got the value back that you drafted Shador Sanders on, I think Andrew Barry would say yes
07:55in a heartbeat.
07:56Really?
07:56That's what he – think about what he did last year.
07:58He had Kenny Pickett traded a fifth-round pick for Kenny Pickett.
08:01And when the Raiders came calling and said, we'll give you a fifth-round pick for Kenny Pickett, he was
08:05like, okay, I'll get the value of the pick back that I used to get this player.
08:09I think he would absolutely do the exact same thing.
08:12I think if it was a fourth or a fifth, I think he would say yes.
08:14And I don't know that that's even coming in.
08:17Again, we're only –
08:17It's fascinating that you think he would do it for equal value.
08:20I think he would.
08:21No, no, no.
08:22That's – I'm just like – I'm processing just because – fourth-round pick, I think – I don't even
08:30know if he'd think of it there.
08:31Because the problem is, is I –
08:32And also, if that happened, wouldn't that kind of tell you how they really view Sanders in the grand scheme
08:36of things?
08:37Like, if they're like, hey, a fifth-round pick coming back, we can get our pick back that we used
08:40on him.
08:41Doesn't that kind of tell you, like, they kind of just feel like he's good but isn't going to necessarily
08:46be their guy?
08:47That would kind of answer that question for you.
08:48Well, it's the million-dollar question.
08:50Because if they think he's their guy, A, he'd be starting right now.
08:53And, B, the asking price would be, all right, you've got to give us a first, second, or third-round
08:58pick.
08:58And as we've learned with this – I hate using the term regime.
09:02They're not kings.
09:03As we've learned with this group, the number one thing is don't listen to what I say.
09:10Listen to what I do.
09:11I think that's the number one lesson that all of them tell us,
09:14which is part of the reason that I am where I am when it comes to Dylan, Gabriel, and everything
09:17else.
09:17Listen to what they don't say and pay attention to what they do.
09:21Follow what we do.
09:22What we do is more important than anything that we are going to say.
09:26And so the fact that we are in a position where Deshaun Watson is going to start the season
09:30tells you what they think of Shador Sanders, which is developmental.
09:35And they should think of Shador Sanders as being developmental.
09:38I mean, it's – we've all watched it.
09:41We all see it.
09:43You see how he processes – it's gotten better from where it was last year.
09:47He's clearly learned.
09:48He still can't really dissect defenses the way that you would like him to,
09:52especially from the quarterback position.
09:53You can't see him figure out – we watched it in joint practices.
09:58This stood out to me so much in joint practices.
10:01When Deshaun Watson took the field, you saw the amount of motion that the offense had.
10:06He was moving guys all over the place.
10:07He was giving himself the answers by sending guys in motion.
10:10He was doing all those different things.
10:11When Shador Sanders came in in joint practices, all of that motion was minimized.
10:15And you could clearly tell it was because Todd Munkin didn't trust him.
10:19He still had the training wheels on him.
10:21That's a good observation by you.
10:22You could clearly tell that the driving instructor was still sitting in the passenger seat
10:26with his foot on the brake.
10:28And now Deshaun Watson had full access to the car.
10:31Now, I'll also say he was driving that car through the facility
10:34and hitting the garage door every so often with it.
10:37But he had full control of the car.
10:40And so I think that's where they see him.
10:43But exactly, follow their actions.
10:46Their actions tell you that's where they see him.
10:48But I never thought of him as being in a spot where he would be on the trade block
10:52where they would get equal value.
10:53I thought, like, if let's say some team picked up the phone and said to him,
10:58okay, I'll give you a third.
11:00They'd pounce.
11:01They'd go nuts.
11:02Right.
11:03Well, then you just turn a fifth-round pick into a third-round pick.
11:05I don't know if they would because they've invested so much time.
11:09I wonder if one round is worth our time.
11:11You know what I mean?
11:11I think to Andrew Barry it is truly.
11:14So a fourth round, I think they might pounce.
11:16Fifth round, I don't think they would.
11:17I go back to last year.
11:19They traded a fifth for Kenny Pickett.
11:20And when a team came calling to offer a fifth, they were like,
11:23all right, but that's minimal time invested.
11:25True.
11:25But they also, I think, started that whole quarterback competition last year
11:29with the idea that I think they thought Kenny Pickett was going to win the job.
11:31So it only took a fifth to move off the guy that you thought might start.
11:34Again, I get it.
11:35He was hurt.
11:35It was a different situation.
11:37But, again, I think it's kind of about, like,
11:41they have probably a finger on the pulse of, like,
11:43how they view Shador Sanders, the league view Shador Sanders.
11:46If they were to get the exact value back for the player that they drafted,
11:50I think they'd be like, that's pretty good in the grand scheme of things
11:54if they really don't think he's going to become anything.
11:56And that's if they don't think he's going to become anything.
11:57I'm enjoying this.
11:58I'm enjoying the fact that you're making me think.
12:00I hadn't thought of it.
12:01This is a hell of a point.
12:02I try to think about these things sometimes the way Andrew Barry would.
12:04I appreciate that.
12:05And I think that Andrew Barry would see that as an opportunity
12:08to recoup a pick that they used on a player
12:11that they might not necessarily see as, like, the long-term plan.
12:14Maybe we do, or maybe some other people do,
12:16and they think, like, you've got to be patient here
12:18and let him get a chance, but if this is the second coach
12:21now deciding, okay, I think this other quarterback's better right now
12:25and he's just not quite there yet,
12:27that might give you some insight into, like, where he's at
12:29and if the right team came along with the right price
12:33that they would pull the trigger.
