00:00bring in jason lloyd he's on the wise heart right we make a right call call right hotline
00:05jason lloyd from the athletic jason good morning good morning boys all right what did you think
00:11when you first heard the news of jed york in a trailer park in ohio your thoughts you're somebody
00:19who's had substantial reportage regarding answer that you know what's funny about that because i'm
00:25weird is i was like facebooking to see if the mobile park had like a facebook page or something
00:32and someone actually posted on the mobile home facebook page that hey we're just as disturbed
00:37by this as you are we called the police he wasn't actually in the mobile home that's just where we
00:42pulled in so there you go now that's very interesting because then the language of is that the domicile
00:51is that the vehicle what are you doing move on i read the athletics is in a parking lot
00:58deshaun watts in the starter tone deshaun or damn it jason deshaun watts in the starter bad move good
01:05move and are you in different go i i was i listen i i do believe that i believe todd
01:12when he says he
01:13thinks deshaun gives the best chance to win i believe that i don't think that's rhetoric that's
01:16because you can't stand shador's fans just come out and admit it would you stop knock it off uh
01:22you know i my overall reaction was stunned and yet not at all surprised because i've thought since
01:29march that deshaun was going to win this job but yet stunned that like they just can't but we're
01:35right back here how are we possibly right back here all of these years later he hasn't been good for
01:40a
01:41number of years so part of me is just stunned that we're right back in this position and and yet
01:45i'm
01:46not at all surprised because i've thought since march this is how it's going to go no that's not
01:50fun uh what what why isn't shador playing thursday
01:58uh i don't know it's a good question do you think you'd want your uh backup to get the reps
02:03um especially if the whole thing is operations like oh he's yeah one's better at getting the plays
02:09out all right then don't play the other guy that'll make him better at it the easy answer is
02:15if he goes out there and plays well it's going to make him look bad i don't think they care
02:19about
02:19that if they cared about that they wouldn't have done what they exactly thank you so i don't
02:23understand why you're not playing the guy which is leading some people to some crazier conspiracy
02:28theories which i might get to coming up here in a moment but go ahead no i i don't have
02:33a great
02:33answer for you you should probably be playing you should probably start the game and play the first
02:36half like you did the other night uh you know he's the backup quarterback you're not risking
02:40an injury to your starter and he clearly needs a rest so yeah i think it's a fair point
02:45hi jason when deshaun watson went down with the injury against cincinnati in 2024
02:53and the following year jimmy haslam gets in front of everybody in training camp and says
02:58that it was a mistake he admitted that it was a mistake how did we get here where two years
03:04later
03:04he wins a quarterback competition in which he looks abysmal against third stringers and then
03:11seemed like he wanted to fight the fans in the post-game press conference
03:15you know we don't have enough time to go through the whole thing of how how we wound up here
03:20i you know
03:21i wrote i got a piece going up later today where i wrote this isn't a serious quarterback room you
03:25can't take the browns seriously until they take themselves seriously by putting a better product in
03:29that in at quarterback uh but you know i do think you're you're 100 right jimmy came out and said
03:35it was a swing and a miss at the owners meetings and you know if you go back to last
03:39year i think
03:40that the thought was listen we've got these two veterans in in picket and flacco they're going to
03:46take dylan gabriel as his developmental backup quarterback uh and then they were going to address
03:52quarterback in 2026 the trade down for the extra pick i think all that played into they're going to
03:59look at quarterback in 2026 and then the 2026 quarterback draft completely fell apart and they
04:05were not in position to go get the one guy that everybody seemed to be on board with was the
04:11guy
04:11to get uh they had a chance at ty simpson they passed we'll see how that plays out down the
04:17road
04:17and so everything sort of the can got kicked down the road since 2027 and that's the best answer i
04:24can
04:24give of how we got here was i i think in their minds when they traded down mason graham got
04:32the
04:32extra one in 2026 they were going to solve the quarterback issue in 2026 and then the class
04:39unraveled on them and left them where they are today what if the class unravels on them next year i
04:44don't think it's a very like high likelihood but the question must be asked you're exactly right the
04:49question must be asked because it did in 26 and i don't have a great answer for you and i'm
04:54with you
04:54i don't think that the odds are high like there's a lot because like this was sort of i think
05:01the
05:01the worst possible timing with the nil bottleneck where teams like the browns who really need a
05:07quarterback the quarterbacks aren't coming out because they can stay in college and make just as
05:12much money maybe not just as much i guess depends where you're taking they could do all right for
05:17themselves in nil so they'll stay in college and make their money and and still live the college
05:22life and have fun and delay the nfl a year or two while teams like the jets and the browns
05:27are
05:27desperate for a quarterback so it was just this bottleneck here of a couple years of guys who
05:32could have come out who in the past would have come out and chose to come back but i do
05:36think that
05:37they'll be coming out now is todd munkin this is such a nasty thing to ask is he flirting with
05:43one and done because of this decision no i don't think not because of this decision no
05:48uh is he flirting with one and done i don't know like let's get into the season see what it
05:53looks
05:53like but i don't think this decision makes it a one and done at all i think he's got the
05:58support
05:58of the organization i don't think that there was interference i think this is his call i've
06:04maintained that i don't think that this was pressure from the front office or ownership i think
06:09the browns the way they're structured with andrew berry absolutely believe the quarterback or i'm
06:15sorry the head coach has to have say over the quarterback and who the quarterback is and last
06:20year i pressed and pressed and pressed on when when to show and shador was named the backup and i
06:27i think
06:27i've mentioned this before on on your show that like early in that week they trade flacco dylan's installed
06:33as the starter they gotta name a backup and early in the week if you remember kevin was kind of
06:39like flirting around the idea of making bailey zappy the backup and he had gone to the point of
06:43telling people in the organization it was going to be bailey was going to be the backup they didn't
06:47think shador was ready and then by the end of the week all that changed and shador was named the
06:51backup and i just assumed he was pressured into doing that and i've asked a hundred different people
06:56a hundred different ways and it's all come back to it's the head coach's call it's totally the head
07:02coach's call so i have to take that like i've had no evidence to the contrary so i have to
07:08believe it's the head coach's call so therefore this year i have to believe it's the head coach's
07:12call so i am on the side of this was todd's call he absolutely believes uh deshaun gives him the
07:19best
07:19chance to win and you know it's easy to make that case he's a veteran and all like all the
07:24all the
07:24reasons that everybody has given for the last however many months is true that deshaun has more
07:30experience more comfort in the system all that is true so it's not a far bridge to cross
07:35it's just all of the scars and all of the pain of the last however many years is why nobody
07:44myself
07:44included wants to see him out there again do you think jason that they were compelled to have an
07:51emergency session all hands on deck conversation with the organization and todd munkin on sunday after
07:59the comments i i don't know i would tend toward no i'm sure it it didn't sit well how could
08:09it
08:09but do you need this emergency summit meeting of the minds no i i don't think so um i think
08:17if anything coming off the emotion of a game even a preseason game you want to get away from each
08:23other
08:23and let the emotion settle and i think that's probably what they did i don't know that i mean
08:29there was it's not a legal ramification it's not a legal case he just said some silly things that's
08:34all yeah i don't think that jason since then sorry to cut you off but we've had uh browns fans
08:41driving
08:42by the facility in berea shouting obscenities their signage over by the jim brown statue that they
08:48continually have to take back off i've seen correspondence from season ticket holders to
08:53their reps saying we're done we are out they've been calling the facility in berea voicing their
09:00displeasure and this is not just a couple of people like from what i have heard there is a
09:07legitimate backlash here so do you think there's a chance something changes with all of this like
09:13did they underestimate what the pushback would be i absolutely think they underestimated what the
09:20pushback would be yes yes but that's different than what you're asking earlier about the meeting
09:24of minds over what the sean said how is that possible how on earth did they underestimate the
09:30pushback on that come on i think that they felt like all all we have to do is put a
09:36good quarterback
09:36out there who if we win all this goes away and they're right like they're right
09:46and you know and you got to get from these few weeks from now until then where people are just
09:53going to open up a vein and let it all out ultimately they're right if you win it goes away
09:58it goes away the odds of that are just so narrow see how how is that do you remember they
10:05were one
10:05and six last time he played he was the worst rated quarterback in the nfl and that was before he
10:10tore his achilles twice so just this idea that he can resurrect this i think is insane but i i
10:19believe
10:20that they went into this thinking all all if we play better all this goes away and that's just and
10:25that's eventually true but you have to get to that point this is august that's september so yeah it's
10:32going to be a month of pain and a month that i'm like listen i was on you guys last
10:36year i said last
10:37year if they put him back out there they deserve everything they're going to get well guess what
10:43here it is the bills come and do they're putting him back out there and they deserve everything
10:46they're going to get all right jason on the shador sanders side of things i made a case that this
10:53could actually be really good for him and now contrasted against deshaun uh he he looks like a real
10:58winner i do think he has people in his inner circle that are getting in the way at times i
11:04know
11:04the browns are not happy about that uh what do you make of shador's situation now with the browns and
11:11his opportunity i think the path for shador is narrowing to have any sort of legitimate future
11:18in cleveland narrowing yeah it's not gone but it's narrowing because he's not the starter now
11:26there as we sit here today what do you think they want to do in the 27 draft we just
11:30got done talking
11:31about they want to draft the quarterback well then that's the end of shador because you're not going
11:36to bring shador back with a rookie quarterback in 2027 no that's it he's why do you say that why
11:41can't
11:42why do you think they can't do that in that common sense i want to hear from jason
11:46so you can clip it and infuriate everybody that's fine hold on three two one go because he's the
11:53most popular celebrity quarterback in the league as a backup you can't have that in the room if
11:59you've got a guy that you believe in that you take it with a top 5 10 pick whatever it
12:04is the top of
12:05the first round every time he plays poorly it's going to start back but what about shador are you
12:09going to play shador where's shador where's shador and all this why aren't you playing shador what's
12:13shador look like you can't do that to the quarterback so that leaves you with 17 games but
12:18it's less than 17 games because deshawn's the starter now i i don't believe for a second
12:23deshawn's going to stay healthy for 17 games or be effective enough to play all 17 so shador is
12:28probably going to play at some point this season but the question is how many games is he going to
12:32get and what's the bar that he has to clear for them to change their plans and i just think
12:37it's
12:37unrealistic at this point like todd can say whatever he wants to say about the progress
12:42shador has made it all sounds wonderful their actions tell you what they think because they're
12:48going through hell with deshawn rather than put him out there what does that tell you about where
12:55they think shador is in his development and how far he has to go between now and december
13:00listen i agree with you but that is the point like your lime has always compared him to tim tebow
13:05and at some point you reached it where he's like hey man he he's he's just not very good and
13:12anybody
13:13who's really screaming and yelling they're just not in touch with reality i i agree with you about next
13:18year's quarterback room he wouldn't be there but i think a lot of people would just go yeah there's there's
13:24a lot of people who believe in the lockless monster too and if these things aren't real and he can't
13:30play quarterback then we're just going to ignore those folks and we're going to move on like i don't
13:35understand what you're saying the the the groundswell of people who want shador to start if you take a
13:40number one overall pick and you had to it i mean that's that's really minuscule yeah yeah who cares
13:48about them like who cares i know they're but they're toxic and mentally broken and the organization
13:53can't pay any attention to them well although i do think that it impacts
13:59no nice you know the players the the teams have espn on the facility a lot of times all these
14:06teams do
14:07so they see what's what's being talked about every day i always wonder why they do have that like i'd
14:13put something else on i put like home and garden network on or something like that i don't know like
14:16cooking shows healthy healthy shows um all right jason i have seen stuff like this play out
14:23so i can already kind of predict how this will go when it comes to the fans that all say
14:29they're
14:29going to boo deshaun watson so what's going to happen the players especially the young ones are
14:35going to be asked about that and they are going to come back and say please fans don't boo deshaun
14:41watson and inevitably what happens it's going to divide the fan base and pit them against the players
14:48which we don't want how do we avoid it i i totally agree which is another layer to why
14:54this is outrageous because now you're putting people who have nothing to do with any of this
15:01what does denzel boston have to do with this what does casey concepcion have to do with this
15:05harold fanon quinshawn nothing they have nothing to do with this and you saw the reaction of denzel
15:11denzel i don't know i've never asked him about this there's never been a point denzel may not even know
15:17a lot of the backstory of deshaun in cleveland and why things are where they are so he hears
15:22his quarterback being booed like that he's like what is going on here so and and that's the thing
15:28like this has gone on for so long and deshaun has been here so long they've basically turned over
15:32the entire offense to where anyone who was a part of all of the mess from before they're not even
15:38here
15:39anymore so it's not even a locker room issue i don't think with deshaun and with these guys it's
15:44it's really about performance and his lack of performance but you're putting you know you've
15:50got this young nucleus of players that you feel really good about that you're excited about
15:54uh that you feel has a lot of potential and you're just dragging this anchor with them and and that's
16:02why i said they didn't take the court if this is if this is how the answer in september then
16:07that
16:07tells me you didn't take the quarterback room very seriously in the off season so i can't take you
16:12very seriously if if this is your response all right thank you for your time see you guys
