00:00not the best news coming out of joint practices um alex wright was helped to a cart after a one
00:06-on-one
00:07against spencer brown of the bills uh he was then carted off and uh it is a lower body injury
00:13now
00:13obviously this has real implications about the depth issues with the browns because alex doesn't
00:19just give them depth on the outside as a starter he's somebody that kicks in on third downs he's
00:24somebody that can play interior because he is also about six foot five 280 pounds uh not only does
00:30it stink from that standpoint we talked to alex about two weeks ago and again just a genuinely
00:36good dude and kind of interesting guy so uh you hate you hate injuries however they happen you
00:42hate them even more when they're somebody you kind of have have talked to once or twice and is just
00:46a
00:46good dude i mean he's the number two edge behind jared verse this is a pretty big deal if this
00:50is
00:50something that's significant especially if the browns are going to try to beat the charges that
00:54they can put together a maybe not a d line that is as good without miles garrett uh but one
00:59that
00:59can be top 10 without miles garrett and and i really do think they can but you need guys like
01:04alex right there but i think the the thing that is if this is a significant serious injury and that
01:09has been one thing that has plagued alex a little bit in his career the timing of it is what
01:14kills you
01:14because again three days ago you could have had zadarius smith if you had a bigger role for him that's
01:19a
01:19good point yeah you could have offered him up the six to eight million dollars the six million with
01:23eight million to incentives that the falcons gave and said here's your starters role uh go ahead and
01:28enjoy it uh yeah i mean it's just a it's a big blow uh there's there's no other way to
01:32put it if we
01:32find out that the injury is going to be something significant his numbers last year across the board
01:37i mean he had really nice really nice uh numbers in a lot of different spots alex right never gets
01:43the
01:43credit that i feel like he deserves i think the same about isaiah mcguire i i and i get it
01:48uh miles
01:49garrett is a phenomenon i understand that but alex and isaiah have become really nice football
01:56players mason graham didn't have the sack numbers but if you've talked about the pressure numbers
01:59were there um and and even in this camp it sounds like mike hall juniors wreck in this league so
02:04uh you know i do feel like miles got a lot of credit that belongs to a lot of other
02:10guys in that
02:10defense as well on top of miles's credit but again that's the latest on alex right the latest from
02:16uh browns camp we will be having todd munkin's press conference in about one hour's time after
02:22joint practices wrap up expecting some level of an update on alex right but mary-kate cabot was on
02:28the station earlier today and she got into the quality of the browns quarterback competition
02:34and the fairness of the quarterback competition i think they've done a really good job of giving
02:39these two guys a fair chance to win this job and equal reps and i think that shador has done
02:44a really
02:44nice job in the competition he's kept himself in it to this point and that's not an easy thing to
02:49do
02:49when you're going against a three-time pro bowler with all that kind of experience that understands
02:54how to run this kind of an offense which is very qb centric so no i i think it's been
02:59a very fair
03:00competition and i think shador every time he's had an opportunity to the rock to rise to the occasion
03:05i feel like he's done so all right so i i'm going to withhold my my take on this just
03:12to start here
03:13we did put out the twitter poll earlier today have the browns held a fair quarterback competition
03:18this camp slash preseason about 200 votes in right now at nick wilson says just under 66 percent of
03:24people saying yes that they feel like the browns have uh as you are one of the uh preeminent shador
03:30scholars in northeast ohio i'll ask you do you feel like it's been fair i guess what i need a
03:35better
03:35definition of the word fair uh do i feel like shador sanders ever had a real shot at that that
03:40answer is no
03:41uh i mean do i feel like haslam and the front office wanted it to be deshaun watson that answer
03:48is yes do i feel like todd munkin uh probably the idea that he got hired was with the idea
03:53that
03:53when they answered and had all those questionnaires of like hey uh what do you what do you think about
03:57this guy what do you think about this guy he probably answered the part about deshaun watson
04:01with yeah i think i can get something out of him yeah yeah i do now do i think that
04:05shador could
04:06have done better to maybe insert himself in this a little bit stronger sure that's obviously there on
04:11the table uh but yeah i think it was always going to get to this spot with deshaun watson starting
04:15week one and that's why none of this has come as a surprise the only surprise out of this is
04:20that
04:20they've kept the charade going as long as they have right now i think it is fair to say that
04:24todd
04:25munkin wanted deshaun to start this whole time for reasons that don't necessarily make sense to me but i
04:30think he has wanted deshaun to start i also think deshaun had a pretty relatively low bar
04:36to clear uh just look functional in a singular preseason game and you're gonna be the face of
04:43the franchise again little buckaroo um so i think those two things are true i also don't think the
04:48competition has been unfair like i think if shador had come out and whatever the thing that you know
04:55whatever part of cadence or operation if he had been able to muster that i think he would have i
05:01think he would have would be the starting quarterback right now now does that feel nebulous based off the
05:06things we've said previously yep sure but i can't hold todd munkin accountable for kevin stefanski's
05:13blatant misuse of the uh of truth in the english language you know like i think todd has been as
05:19honest
05:19as he can be sometimes when he's wanted to be uh my only real problem is like this week because
05:25i
05:25think it's closed and i think the only unfair thing is to give somebody a chance that doesn't have a
05:29chance but even then i like it's not going to stop shador or shouldn't stop shador from getting another
05:35chance in maybe october to play so that's it it's not hurting him for when he's going to start in
05:39october or when he's going to start later on this series or season so you just kind of go with
05:43it so i do
05:43think like i think it has been much more fair than last year was last year was a ridiculous bleep
05:50show
05:51and it's not even from the shador side of things it was it was the entire idea of a four
05:56quarterback
05:56room it was kenny pickett being the front runner until he got hurt and they couldn't just force him
06:01into the starter uh i think i think todd has shown that he's he's not going to force it i
06:09still would
06:10prefer shador i think shador has been the better quarterback and it drives me crazy that so many
06:14people just accept you know operationally dashawn's ahead here as if that's like the biggest thing
06:20you've ever seen on a football field i listen i understand everything we see in practice isn't
06:25the end-all be-all and that there is additional context dashawn has had like one really good
06:32performance and the rest of them have just kind of been there and that and by the way those are
06:37his
06:37best practices yeah so i really struggle with that oh one guy looks like he can actually throw
06:42in the nfl and the other guy looks washed i think i'd be angrier if he still looked like deshaun
06:46this
06:46is like the guy that we saw two weeks ago that i thought was unplayable you know like deshaun did
06:50come along nicer and he did come along in a way that it can justify it in their eyes where
06:54i don't want
06:55to come across screaming and yelling and being the crazy person is i i don't like shador had a chance
07:01that if he came out there and he just lit him up i don't know that it would have got
07:05the job done i
07:05truthfully don't know i think he was the better quarterback in this entire ordeal i really do
07:09but i i he didn't make it so obvious and so the browns must do this every beat reporter can't
07:17deny
07:17it and so that from that perspective the browns get justified in this decision and they get justified
07:22in this even if i think the entire time it was always going to be deshaun watson yeah and it
07:26is
07:26going to be an interesting thing to kind of follow here with the quarterback competition because i do
07:31think if deshaun is officially the starter let's say sometime saturday or maybe next monday
07:38and he goes out there and looks like deshaun watson has for the first four to six weeks of this
07:43season
07:43and the browns start in a one and five two and four hole or even if they start like three
07:49and three
07:49like winning in spite of deshaun which they've done most of the time that he's been here and then
07:53deshaun comes in and looks really really good there's going to be a lot of questions in a
07:58revisionist way that i think people beyond you and me aren't answering aren't asking like you
08:05and i are asking all right one guy looks better in practice the the one thing that we can't chalk
08:10up to is operational and i'm i do believe that deshaun has been better because he is the veteran
08:16he should as a 10-year vet he should have an understanding of different offenses better than
08:19even though we just say that he's been better operationally and he might be but it's not as if
08:23deshaun's impressed us in that regard either but i think that's what's interesting like on saturday
08:27he had his problems yeah like i think i think what's interesting is if deshaun has operational
08:31issues and he looks we saw the delay a game it happened we all watched it we saw them getting
08:37in and out of the huddle and not being able to do so properly we we watched that in the
08:41game saturday
08:41like i think there's a i don't know if it's the most likely scenario but there's a there's a scenario
08:46out there that i think is one of the more likely scenarios not the most likely but one of the
08:50more
08:50likely scenarios where those first six games of the year are the reason you do have the 15th pick
08:59in the nfl draft this year instead of maybe being a more competitive team and i think that's where
09:03it's going to be frustrating so you get the angriest if it turns out that deshaun stumbles out of the
09:08gates and absolutely stinks up the joint and then shador comes in puts the cape on saves the season
09:13gives you some hope but it was just too late because the first six games tanked you yeah yeah i
09:18mean
09:18again like so much of how you handle this matters that's why again like i i have enjoyed this lima
09:24poked fun at me on twitter the other day of like because i i was going in saying let's enjoy
09:28this
09:28thing as best we can when people get you know daryl yesterday saying it's a disaster and melting down
09:35about it i don't like i just i'm not going to melt down about a quarterback spot that we all
09:41know
09:41has its issues but that the rest of the team is good i'm not going to hold the rest of
09:45the team hostage
09:46because of the organizational their questionable decisions at quarterback because i think they
09:51can for one time in my professional life i think they actually have the talent around the spot
09:59to to maybe elevate it a little bit more even if it's still elevating it from caca to hey
10:06it didn't completely screw it up i know but ultimately it feels like a constant theme from
10:11the national media this offseason is that the browns eyes are on the 2027 quarterback class
10:16and it's on 2027 for that spot in particular and how they've handled this screams that that's true
10:22more than it's wrong and i know that upsets a lot of people because you want to treat these seasons
10:26as if they're precious as if you only get so much time to watch these games but they do give
10:30me the
10:31impression that they're more worried about 2027 quarterback instead of 2026 quarter so if they
10:35start two and four and let's say they go gosh two and four that means how many games will be
10:40left
10:40after that 11 11 yeah so they go seven and four afterwards with shador okay so you did wow okay
10:45so
10:45we got ourselves a nine win season yeah and they miss the playoffs yeah you won't be a little pissed
10:51at those six games of course i'll be pissed okay yeah of course i will i'll be i'll feel vindicated
10:56if
10:56that if like it goes directly that way we will have an i was right we will be the biggest
11:01i was right
11:02we could ever throw why i can't do anything about that right now is because it seems it seems as
11:08of
11:08this moment that deshaun isn't wildly impressed and again i was waiting for shador to go out there
11:13and grab it even if i thought he was going to be stopped in his tracks even if he did
11:16do that
11:17he himself hasn't gone out and grabbed it the way that i thought he would there's still time to
11:21impress in this camp he's been good he hasn't been otherworldly and so i i don't know if he goes
11:26out
11:27there and wins seven games after deshaun gets benched yeah i'll feel pretty good about that so as we
11:31talk about uh the quarterback uh competition uh scott petrack just sending out uh shador sanders
11:37uh with a deep into malachi corley versus the bills very nice shadot there we talked about the
11:43dud dot the deshaun watson dot and the watson dot the watt dot no you know what we'll work on
11:49it later
11:49later
11:49you
