00:15maybe well usually it's baseball it's usually it's pitchers right yeah no that's what i was
00:21thinking and i haven't i don't recall a lot of issues with blisters with quarterbacks because
00:25again i mean the baseball thing is just the friction the ball smaller and you're throwing
00:29it harder so i suppose it's a thing i will say this though you know after watching chador
00:35for two years in colorado and going to that pro day a couple years ago he's never never thrown
00:41damn reno spirals like that that was never really what his game was about anyway so i don't know if
00:47that's if it's worse now than it was in seasons past but i i wasn't expecting to come out there
00:52you know and spin it like he's josh allen i really do believe here ryan that there are two different
00:58answers i think there's what everybody else wants to see i'd say the vast majority of fans want to
01:02see chador sanders start the season and i think that's media everybody uh but i think that realistically
01:08you know todd munkin's got a job to do and he might just go ahead and have to select the
01:12veteran
01:13into sean watson what do you think no i think you're right about what todd's going to do and todd
01:19doesn't
01:19strike me as someone sort of a grizzled old-timey coach if you will uh who's gonna succumb to to
01:26peer pressure or social media pressure or whatever i would imagine he doesn't spend a lot of time on
01:30social media um but he also is a pretty competitive guy and is all about winning and we've seen him
01:36at
01:36various stops um he can he can handle young players but he also comes from an era where you know
01:44tough
01:44love might be the answer so whether that's to sean or chador i think it doesn't really matter in the
01:50short term uh for the organization i think it matters for chador and find out whether he is uh
01:55anything more than a one-year stopgap because i've been saying this for since the draft and i think
02:01andrew barry's done a great job the last two drafts but if you took this team i probably told you
02:05guys
02:05this too you put them in houston and gave him cj stroud they're winning 10 or 11 games like the
02:09team
02:10on paper is great outside of the most important position so whether deshaun gets you to six or
02:15seven or eight wins or chador does i think one of those guys going to play out of their minds

02:20keep the job beyond 2026 wait the browns are good enough to do that you're saying outside of qb
02:25if they had if they had a quarterback i think if you told me cj stroud was their quarterback i

02:30they're in the in the mix to win the division or not cj stroud yeah cj stroud yeah you can

02:36whatever you want yeah that's fine so you're a believer in the browns totally rebuild offensive
02:41line yeah i i think they're going to be better but yeah look young guys are a reason for concern
02:47we don't know where spencer fano is going to look like he hasn't played left tackle for a couple
02:50years i like the edge with which he's playing all the things we talk about in terms of the story
02:55lines uh coming out training camp line but right we'll find out we'll find out right quick what it
03:00looks like but uh i the skill position players are really good the defense is still going to be
03:05really good i mean they lost jim schwartz that's a big deal and obviously trading miles
03:09garrett for jared versus going to be a downgrade but i don't think as huge a one as the team

03:13wasn't very good last year with with miles garrett so i think they are and i think the the wide
03:18receivers the young high receivers are going to going to be a lot of fun early on i think they're
03:23a quarterback away from sort of putting this thing together and being competitive consistently
03:26competitive in the afc north that actually makes the season more frustrating to me why is that
03:33because i don't want them to lose you know i it's just bad it's like okay if you're always focused
03:39on them losing for the future when are we actually going to get that future because there's been
03:43plenty as lima said many times over ryan like it doesn't take a very smart man to tear a football
03:48team down but it takes some smarts to build them up and i think we just always want to take
03:53the path
03:53of least resistance and maybe rightfully so but i i just am so tired of always looking forward to the
04:00future but i've accepted the reality of this if they thought they had a look at any of this they
04:04don't trade miles garrett like the rams didn't trade for him just to get to mediocre okay so i i
04:11know that
04:11i got to get to that guy and now i'm going to find myself and you cover all these quarterbacks
04:16i i may find myself prematurely because i don't want to do it this soon but i have to watch
04:22texas ohio
04:23state like a hawk because that could end up being the next browns quarterback one of those two guys
04:27i got to watch some of these bigger college football games ohio state oregon later on in the
04:32year when it might be a little bit more appropriate because who knows what the browns
04:35will be done by then but we'll see it might be a little more appropriate for but i don't want
04:39to
04:40sit and spend a whole season focused on the future quarterback that's in college but i i feel
04:45i'm gonna have to so are you in line of the opinion that the browns are just a quarterback away
04:51from being consistently competitive in the north i got to feel better about the offensive line i got
04:56to see him i i want to be there i'm excited you know i'm an excitable person but i can't
05:01i just
05:02can't get there yet i think that there are some good young players the depth in the secondary scares
05:06me you got some big names there that i can trust but behind them you got a lot of inexperience

05:12i i still think we're paying for the three first round picks that we missed because of deshaun
05:17watson's terrible contract and deal and everything uh this is we are still a little bit away but i i
05:24do
05:24think that if you go out and you get that quarterback next year all of a sudden all these
05:28things look a hell of a lot better i mean good god look at what joe burrow was able to
05:31cover up
05:31while he was healthy yeah and it's not even exaggerating to say joe burrow's worth two and
05:36a half to three wins a year probably more than maybe any other quarterback josh allen maybe um but
05:42yeah he's incredibly important because that team absolutely sinks when he's not there because every
05:46other position especially on defense has huge questions offensive line as well um and that's fair i mean
05:52lima and you both bring up a good point about the offensive line outside of sort of the young
05:55guy they drafted but i i i just feel on the outside looking in and it's unfair for me to
06:01probably say
06:01it's not all doom and gloom and you've had to live through it for however many years but it does
06:06feel
06:06like they're turning the corner but again every word that leaves my mouth i follow it by saying i know
06:11you guys don't want to hear that for the 15th time right wilson with us every year i feel like
06:15there are 15
06:16new wide receivers that are exciting in the nfl and i'm always like why can't the browns get
06:21some of those guys they might have gotten two of them this year in addition to getting harold fan and
06:26the tight end who certainly uh is another very solid pass catcher so uh i know early signs are good
06:33do
06:33you think it'll play out that way that the browns got two really good ones yeah i like both casey
06:38and
06:38denzel coming coming out and i thought that denzel should have probably made his way into the first round i
06:43think they got him at 39 the happiest person on that roster should be jerry judy because now he
06:48doesn't have to do everything and i don't know if he was a legitimate number one compared to other
06:53number ones around the league so you have sort of a wide receiver group by committee and if casey who's
06:58played a lot of football and denzel who's played a lot of football can step up and in their various
07:02roles casey's does most of his damage in the slot and denzel's a big outside target uh i think it
07:07makes
07:08life easier for for whoever that quarterback's going to be and you mentioned harold fanon jr who was
07:12the third round pick who was so much fun last year um and got better as a blocker this as
07:17the season
07:17went on so i i do think there's reasons for optimism again i have to give it when i say
07:24it but
07:24they have some good players man and i think that like i mentioned andrew barry's done a good job and
07:29i do think i know todd monkey wasn't the sexy hire uh sometimes fans want whoever's next off the
07:34shanahan or mcbay tree but i think he was the right hire and he has a track record of getting
07:38the most out
07:39of quarterbacks both young and old you host a show with a former general manager uh you talk to a
07:44lot
07:44of general managers current and former ryan wilson by the way joining a cbs sports nfl writer do you
07:50believe the prevailing thought is that andrew barry has been so much better now that he's gotten away
07:54from paul de modesta that i don't know and i haven't really talked to anyone about that and you
07:59guys know better than me sort of the inner workings of the front office when paul was there uh i
08:05i the last
08:06i read about paul's when he left i think he joined the rockies and i was just reading the athletic
08:09story about sort of what he did and did not take responsibility for going back to the sean i
08:14believe so i don't have any real sense on that uh and having talked to andrew a couple times um
08:20obviously incredibly smart and i think people undersell his um his demeanor as not being a hard
08:27edge guy as sort of not take as i don't know how to kind of put this as not being
08:32um sort of the
08:34rah-rah guy that perhaps the browns think they need but i think he's he's pushing all the right
08:38buttons he's incredibly calculating in terms of what he's doing and finding the right ways to get
08:43that roster where it needs to be now look i've talked to plenty of browns fans as you have who
08:47aren't crazy about the direction of the organization i understand that but um i don't have any real sense
08:52for the paul andrew dynamic though just having spoken to andrew a few times i don't get the sense that
08:57he would be willing to lay down and just let paul do whatever he wanted
09:01well boy that's that's been an age-old question um i'm curious when it comes to the browns defense
09:06after losing miles garrett there's still a bunch of fans here locally that expect a top five defense
09:12is that an unreal expectation given we just lost one of the best defensive players the last 30 years
09:19yeah and you know i'm one of the the bigger issues might be losing the coordinator because i think
09:24the dropout from miles to jared there's a there's a gulf there but jared's only 25
09:29and he is a high-end player he's going to get better so i think you can uh make up
09:35for some
09:35of the loss of miles garrett i do wonder i want to see what rudenberg system looks like post jim
09:40schwartz because jim schwartz has historically done a fantastic job wherever he's landed as
09:44the defensive coordinator so that's probably my biggest issue i know you guys mentioned the
09:47secondary concerns but again going back to the draft carson swessinger who i i didn't think would
09:52be as good as he was going to be uh fantastic football player mason graham very quietly had a good
09:58rookie season i thought so i think they can be above average top you know 75th percentile in terms
10:04of where they rank in the in the afc among um among defenses and they probably are still going to
10:10be
10:10the best unit in the afc north we'll we'll see what jesse mentor does with uh with the ravens the
10:17sealers are older and we don't know about the ravens they signed everyone in their brother and free
10:20agency we'll see if that changes anything anything but i i think this unit is going to be asked to
10:25do a lot
10:25to help out the quarterback as they sort of figure that thing out over the first month of the season
10:30i just don't know if they're going to be as good as they were last year jj mccarthy is going
10:33to start
10:33the season on the bench up in minnesota can he be resurrected i just wrote about this yesterday after
10:39it happened and uh very rarely has a quarterback that's been drafted that high been benched after
10:45just 10 starts he'll get another chance the issue becomes where's that chance and what or
10:51how long is the leash at his next opportunity i think he has a better chance to resurrected this
10:57career than anthony richardson but that's as low a bar as you can get so this feels more like you
11:04know kenny pickett's career path post pittsburgh than it does like sam donald but it took sam donald
11:08four years to get out of out of new york and then a couple more stops before he found his
11:12way to
11:12minnesota so never say never but the history is not kind to to guys like jj and anthony richardson
11:18well i've seen the screenshot jj mccarthy bench justin field zach wilson dylan gabriel anthony
11:25richardson kenny pickett trey lance mac jones will levis the nfl has a qb developmental problem i saw
11:30that making the rounds is that what it is or is it just a really tough league and no matter
11:36what
11:37guys are going to get benched because this is not a science on drafting quarterbacks and evaluating
11:42quarterbacks yeah man it's such an incredibly difficult position to play and i think a lot of it
11:48uh physically these guys aren't very far apart when you put them on a scale compared to everyone
11:53on planet earth the issue is above the neck and i think that's that's what separates guys who make
11:59it from guys who don't we talked to jj mccarthy the combine and i remember thinking man this guy is
12:03so
12:03charismatic but i also remember thinking there were some questions about is he trying too hard to say
12:08what people wanted to say in these interviews and then you go back and watch him i mean you don't
12:12have
12:12to be an expert um you guys saw the same michigan games i saw when they won the national title
12:16he was not
12:17going to have to do a lot so to take him that high you're putting a lot of pressure on
12:20a young man
12:21already who has not been sort of hasn't seen what carson beck for example saw in college when he was
12:26run out of georgia and had to sort of find himself at down in miami and who knows if carson
12:31beck's going
12:32to be decent but he was also just a third round pick so i think the number one the position
12:36is so hard
12:36to play one of the toughest positions in any sport and then if you're not right above the neck and
12:42there
12:42are any number of reasons why you could struggle with that i think it doesn't matter how far you can
12:46grow football everything else goes out the window you're not going to have a chance if deshaun watson
12:51start what does he have to do to come back in 2027 to the cleveland browns he's got to look
12:57a lot like
12:57he looked during his prime in houston and that six years ago i think right exactly i think jj mccarthy
13:04has a better chance of being a starter in the league full-time did that happen why would you bring
13:08him
13:08back and he's 50 of him at his best for what i don't i i wish i could tell you
13:14other than
13:15he's the veteran and you have a veteran first year but a veteran coach that i mean he has to
13:21win as soon as he possibly can so if one guy's just slightly better at getting him in and out
13:24of
13:24the huddle i know people going what does that mean it means getting the play out to guys you know
13:29in
13:29the snap knowing all the pre-snap stuff knowing where guys are supposed to go if a guy's supposed
13:33to go in motion telling him to get his ass in motion like these are these are things that are
13:37really
13:37important that todd monkey needs to trust him for and if he's if he trusts deshaun watson slightly better than
13:43the other guy he's got to make that decision that i agree with but i mean beyond 2026 i'm putting
13:50all my chips in on whoever the quarterback they end up loving um after the college football season
13:54unless like i said deshaun plays like he's hair on fire houston texans best version of himself and
14:00again would you say six years i think that ship has long since sailed so if it's incremental
14:06incrementally better deshaun over shador sure roll with it for 2026 and win some football games
14:11um that tells you what you need to know about shador going forward as well um and i always
14:15ask you guys i just suppose dylan's the play filter now like we're not letting anything else
14:19but hold for snaps i want to know real quick owen you might need to get it ready power rank
