00:00And, Limey, you said you're picking up a theme today with either me or the listeners or the callers or
00:09whoever.
00:09What are you picking up?
00:10Oh, with everybody.
00:11Okay, what are you picking up?
00:12That nobody seems to be matching the excitement of your new head coach.
00:17It's your new head coach, the guy who was supposed to be the pinnacle of truth-telling.
00:24That was the one thing we all agreed, well, we are going to get the truth from Todd Munkin.
00:28He is going to come in here, and he is going to be able to finally, not just the same
00:33old Kevin Stefanski,
00:35well, you know, before him, you got to trust me, or I got to coach it better, we got to
00:40coach it better, we all got to do it better.
00:42Finally, we had somebody who is going to be a fresh breath of air.
00:47We are going to get that from Todd Munkin.
00:49And instead, nobody seems to, I mean, is that the first time we've even played that clip in the show?
00:55That's the first one.
00:56Here's another one.
00:57We're trying to stay as simple as we can, give the quarterbacks opportunities to play and to function.
01:02You know, we didn't game plan for Chicago.
01:04We certainly wanted to run the things that our quarterbacks felt comfortable with and where we were at,
01:08and we're certainly going to build off that moving forward.
01:10It was fun watching him operate, give him some completions, and get his feet wet a little bit.
01:15Who's the him?
01:16That's Deshaun Watson.
01:17Here's some more on Fun Deshaun.
01:20Oh, it was awesome.
01:21I mean, it was so cool to watch him play.
01:23I get all of the frustration by fans himself, but for him to come back and work like he did
01:30is an unbelievable credit to him.
01:32And then to go out there, he was having fun today, and that is so cool.
01:36And I thought he really functioned at a high level.
01:38Certainly, we don't want to be taking timeouts.
01:40We sure as heck can't take the lay of games, but it was fun watching him play and watching us
01:45put the next step forward and see where we're at.
01:48So he's going to remain positive.
01:49Like, this is...
01:50He said functions at a high level.
01:52Is that truth-telling from Todd, or do you think he's lying?
01:57What do you mean?
01:58Oh, God, such a terrible question to ask you.
02:00Go ahead.
02:01What do you mean by that, though?
02:03Do you agree with him?
02:04Was he functioning at a high level?
02:07No.
02:08Okay, so Todd is now fibbing to try to, in delusion, to live in a world of delusion, or what?
02:14Well, what's he expecting him to do?
02:16Is he expecting him to function at a high level compared to Lamar Jackson and Mahomes and Allen and Burrow,
02:22or is he functioning at a high level compared to the room that he's in?
02:28You're not going to paint me into calling Todd Monk a liar.
02:31I'm not calling him a liar.
02:32He might have been a little exuberant and excited.
02:35I don't think he thought he was going to have Lamar Jackson out there.
02:38I don't even think that Jesse Minter thinks he's really watching Lamar Jackson right now.
02:42It's the first preseason game for a guy who hadn't played in how many days?
02:45Yeah, but when you say fibbing, I don't know, 600 and change, I think, was the number.
02:49I mean, there have been very few quarterbacks that have gotten that kind of a layoff,
02:53that have had that kind of experience in the operating room with the various injuries,
02:59and then have been able to come back and do anything.
03:01You know, Michael Vick is the one guy we can point to,
03:05and I'm not sure, did Michael Vick show rust when he came back?
03:08Well, he didn't have an injury, I think.
03:09He went to federal prison.
03:10No, I'm saying, did he show rust, though?
03:11Probably got a lot of workouts in.
03:12Yeah, I mean, you can work out.
03:13Do we know what it looked like?
03:14Literally the one thing they do there.
03:16Do we know what it looked like in preseason?
03:19What I'm saying is, I think Todd Monkens seemed genuinely,
03:23like not even a, I'm going to lie to the fans,
03:25I think he genuinely was taken aback at the Deshaun Watson experience.
03:31Good, I'm glad.
03:32And I wonder if that, what it would take for that type of feeling
03:38to get to the public, to the fans.
03:40Oh, it can only happen in the regular season.
03:44That's, this is all formality.
03:46For the fans, it can only happen in the regular season.
03:49If he plays well and they win games, eventually the worm will turn.
03:53They don't have any faith that he's going to play well and win games.
03:58And every time they listen to us, is there anybody on the air
04:01who thinks that Deshaun Watson's going to set the world on fire in September?
04:04No.
04:05So they're looking for somebody to tell him that.
04:08Nobody has.
04:09Nobody on this station, no podcast, nobody on TV.
04:12In fact, it's the exact opposite.
04:14Everybody's going, why are you playing this guy?
04:15Why are you not playing Shador Sanders?
04:17Why is this guy going?
04:19Like, that's not good.
04:20So the fans pick up on that.
04:21That's why you're getting this theme.
04:22So are people going to start out the Todd Munkin experience with no faith in Todd
04:28if he's excited about the quarterback and the comeback and the fans aren't?
04:33It's not about faith in Todd.
04:34Now, eventually they will lose faith in Todd if they don't win games
04:38because people get annoyed by not winning football games.
04:40So there's going to be a lot of defending.
04:42If you like Todd that much, there's going to be a lot of defending that you have to do.
04:45If you don't like Todd, I guess you can pile on.
04:47But if he's not going to win games, then people are going to get in.
04:49But I think they're understanding to a point of it's like, hey, you don't feel any faith in these QBs.
04:54Like, does any Browns fan really have a lot of faith?
04:58Like a Browns-Browns fan that anybody in the room is to the future.
05:02None of them do.
05:03Or very, very, very, very, very few, and even they don't want to speak up.
05:07So if you don't have any faith in them, it's hard for a lot of fans to get that nasty,
05:12that excited either way
05:14when they don't believe that any of these guys are going to be here next year.
05:18And when they get to the regular season, and you're sitting down on a Sunday,
05:24yeah, you have your expectations.
05:26It's probably going to be a long year.
05:28But in the heat of the moment, you're going to get upset.
05:30That's when you're going to get that real reaction.
05:32But this, this wasn't something that got a lot of people hot and bothered.
05:3611 for 15 and 100 and change and all that.
05:39It's fine.
05:40It's a fine outing, especially after two years off and everything there.
05:44But it's nothing that's going to get anybody really excited again.
05:48I didn't open up my phone to a bunch of, oh, here we go.
05:51It didn't really happen.
05:53No, I thought it was nice to see him get into a rhythm up until he got his hand or
05:59wrist
05:59or whatever it was kind of shaken up.
06:01Because then it went right back to some of the bad habits and the shot putting.
06:05And yeah, he didn't exactly look to really go deep.
06:08I'm sure there were people, the people that appointed the All-22 are saying he missed some
06:13prime opportunities for some bigger throws.
06:15But the good news was that the offense, you can see there will be some.
06:18Is that something we could say, hey, could take some time even for a 10-year vet?
06:23Or is he supposed to come out and be able to do that stuff immediately, even after all
06:27those days off?
06:28You know, that's something that Todd Munkin certainly seems like he, he thought that was
06:32within the realm of where his quarterback should be.
06:35Like, I'm curious because on Friday, I'm listening to the afternoon show and they, they came out
06:40and they're like, I don't expect him to even be able to play the position.
06:44Well, compare that to what the coach said afterwards.
06:47Like, if you thought he couldn't play the position and then look like that, then you've
06:51got to be celebrating how far he's come.
06:54So I'll be curious to see what they'll do in the afternoon show.
06:56I'm trying to take it in stride.
06:58I thought it was good.
07:00I thought it was good.
07:01It didn't get me changing my win-loss total on the year.
07:04Like, I think they look like, they look like a four or five win football team, but that's
07:07the way everybody else is.
07:09There's no, there's no gas for any of these guys in, in realistic terms for the Browns.
07:15So what you're getting is just on it.
07:17You're, you're getting honesty.
07:18Nobody's lying to themselves.
07:19No one's lying to you.
07:20You're getting brutal honesty from Browns fans.
07:22They know what the season's going to be.
07:24And yeah, there's going to be things that they get excited about and upset about like
07:28Casey Concepcion looked fantastic.
07:30Spencer Fano looked like, looked fantastic.
07:32We've had wide receivers.
07:34We've had one offensive lineman in particular, and a couple of over time, but one in particular
07:38that have looked fantastic in front of terrible quarterbacks until you get the quarterback
07:43situation figured out.
07:44And what they did is told you that they're going to get their quarterback, they're going
07:47to do their damnedest to get their quarterback situation figured out.
07:49And they're planning for that for the future.
07:50What's the point of anybody raising hell on the phones over the first preseason game?
07:54There is none.
07:56What you see is what you're getting.
07:57And what you're seeing, it might be functional, but it still ain't that great.
08:03Deshaun Watson's your starter.
08:042-1-6-4-7-4-0-0-92.
08:06Now, that's not official.
08:07You made that proclamation?
08:09That's my proclamation there.
08:10Yeah, I see some brushback on that on social media.
08:14Some people...
08:14Oh, I'm sure.
08:15...are not happy that we are acting like the thing is over as if this week doesn't matter.
08:20Am I wrong or am I just early?
08:22Well, hold on.
08:23You've got to make sure you differentiate everybody.
08:26Am I wrong or am I just early?
08:27So what we had said over the last month was how big of a week this was going to be.
08:32But if we already think it's determined, then is this week with the joint practice not that
08:36big of a week?
08:37We just had Daryl on, and Daryl said it's the biggest week of Shador's NFL career.
08:43And I said, no, it can't be, because I've already...
08:46I think that that decision's made without actually saying it.
08:51And how much can he do?
08:53They're going to split, and Deshaun's going to get the majority of the ones, or he's going
08:58to start with the ones.
08:59Isn't that right, according to Daryl?
08:59On Thursday.
09:00Thursday in the practice.
09:02Well, and according to Todd yesterday, Todd said, Monday, Wednesday is Shador, Tuesday
09:08is Deshaun, and then Thursday, he said he still had to talk to Joe Brady.
09:14He hadn't talked to him yet as far as when he talked.
09:16They've talked now according to his timeline.
09:18But they would split reps against the ones, so it'd be like five and five each.
09:25But who's out there first?
09:28I think it's Deshaun.
09:30I don't know for sure.
09:31So if Deshaun's out there first, you only get so much with the first against Buffalo in
09:38the joint practice, and then you'll start on Saturday, I just don't know how much he
09:42can do.
09:43He'll play with his starting offensive line, so we can eliminate that, but guys, I just
09:48think we need to ready ourselves for this decision.
09:50And if I'm wrong, great.
09:52I'd love for Shador to start the season, but also I want him to deserve to start the season
09:56if he doesn't deserve.
09:57Like, if he goes out there and he's just bad on Thursday and bad on Saturday, and then
10:01they make him the starter, it's going to go, well, what are we actually watching here?
10:05So I'm just ready to accept reality of this.
10:08So yeah, you can cuss me out all you want.
10:09That's fine.
10:10I don't think I'm wrong.
10:11I just think maybe I'm a little bit early for some people's tastes.
10:14That's all.
10:14Well, and that's the hard part about this is just looking at the schedule all along.
10:20You know, they were kind of going to be up against this.
10:23And if Shador was given a fair, like we say, a fair, fair, fair, fair shot, you know,
10:31he needed to do more with that opportunity by now because Watson was so abysmal to start
10:37out camp that I thought, all right, now Shador can actually win this thing.
10:40But it seemed like everything changed once Deshaun had those two practices back to back
10:45and had all those opportunities in the red zone.
10:47And I think that Todd Munkin, let me say this, I think Todd Munkin has made it as fair
10:51as he possibly can because you saw them, they rushed to that decision up there in Minnesota
10:56because these guys want their decision to be made.
10:58They want 52 other guys to go around the player that they want to start at quarterback
11:03and start to build a relationship, start to build their real culture and start to head
11:08on.
11:08So this still being open, he's being as fair as he possibly can.
11:12And I think he's been that way throughout this training camp.
11:14But I just think we need to look at the writing that's on the walls here.
11:18And it's not that Shador's career is over.
11:21It's not that Shador should be jettisoned or anything.
11:23No, I don't think he should be cut.
11:25I don't think he should be traded.
11:26I don't think he will be either of those two things.
11:29I don't think his career's over if he doesn't start week one for the Cleveland Browns.
11:33If he can't beat up Deshaun Watts or anything like that.
11:36No, I think that there's things that are just explainable that would lead you to think,
11:40yeah, the coach wants the veteran to start off the season.
11:42Is that such a bad thing?
11:44No, it's not.
11:46It's not what I really want it to be, but it's not the end of the earth.
11:50Well, I've said all along, I thought this actually could end up becoming a decent thing.
11:54If he makes it that way, it can benefit him.
11:56For Shador.
11:57Talking about Shador Sanders.
11:58Yeah, I think this could be better because we all think he's going to get the opportunity,
12:02whether it's Deshaun's not going to play well enough or Deshaun can't stay healthy.
12:06One of those two things, I think, if you are putting anything on this,
12:11if you're a wagering individual like that, that's probably a good bet.
12:15And so then Shador will take over.
12:17And hopefully by then the offensive line will have stabilized a little bit.
12:20It can be really tough to know what it's going to look like those first one to two to three
12:26to even four weeks of a season.
12:27We know that in the NFL.
12:29It's brutally tough.
12:302-1-6-4-7-4-0-0-92.
12:32Are you ready to call the quarterback competition for Deshaun Watson?
12:35Or should we just wait for Shador to get his start?
12:38We can wait.
12:38I'll go through the motions for you.
12:42Terrible way to say it.
12:43I'll go through the motions for you if you want me to.
12:46But I think we all know the truth here.
12:48Let's go to the phones.
12:49Greg in Dallas, Texas on the Free Odyssey app.
12:52He's next up on the Fan.
12:53Hello, Greg.
12:55What's up, Ken?
12:56Hi, Greg.
12:56Go ahead.
12:58I think it is.
12:59I'm going to say that it's time to call it, but I think it is what it is.
13:02I think at this point we know that it was all always Deshaun Watson.
13:09I think the fact that there wasn't an actual true competition
13:13going on does speak to, the fact that what the organization does feel
13:17about Shador and the fact that he is worthy of being a starting quarterback.
13:22And, Tom, I think it is Deshaun Watson.
13:24Did you not think it was a legitimate quarterback competition then
13:27if this is how this is going?
13:29No, I do think it was a legitimate quarterback competition.
13:33But if you think about it from a business standpoint, listen,
13:36they paid Deshaun Watson $230 million fully guaranteed.
13:39See, they brought him in to be the starting quarterback.
13:43And if he had not been injured, he would still be the starting quarterback
13:46for the Cleveland Browns.
13:50So I would say that, yes, it's been a fair competition.
13:53But once again, that's just because of the strength of what Shador did
13:56in those seven games.
13:58As a rookie with no form of a training.
14:01He did show enough to show that he can be a starting quarterback in this league.
14:04Well, I think he can be – there's a lot of guys – thank you for the call, Greg.
14:08I don't think he's completely incapable of being a starting quarterback at all.
14:11And I know that some people say it, well, just because he couldn't take
14:15the Deshaun Watson's job, he couldn't be the starter over Deshaun Watson
14:19doesn't mean – or means that he's not a starter.
14:21That's not what I'm saying at all.
14:23I think he can, but I think it's absolutely completely positive, 100% true
14:29that there is a chance that, yeah, you know what?
14:31A lot of things went after you last year.
14:33A lot of things had to change for you.
14:35It has been an offseason.
14:37There's only so much time.
14:38You could put in all the workouts.
14:39You could have four workouts a day like you said that they were telling you
14:42tone or everything.
14:43But there's only so much that you can do in real live reps that could probably
14:47dissuade somebody from starting the veteran or starting you ahead of the veteran
14:52considering what you've done.
14:53If it was absolutely undeniable, then fine.
14:56But if it's not undeniable, I've got to get a season going here.
14:59But please, of all the things that I'm saying, it doesn't mean it's the end
15:03of Shador.
15:05That is not the case.
15:07He could play week three.
15:08He could start week three.
15:10So it's not the end.
15:12But I know that they want to get this done as soon as they can so guys can
15:16rally around people.
15:17So fine, we'll go through this for another week.
15:20But I think what we're looking at is the truth that, yeah, it's going to be
15:23Deshaun Watson to start the season.
15:24And I don't know if that means he's even going to start week two, Anthony.
15:28But, yeah, that's where I stand on this.
15:30And I'm sure I'll get beat up by a fair amount of people, but I don't know if
15:32they're actual hardcore Browns fans.
15:35For sure.
15:36Obviously, it's the one thing we've kind of said about him, and we said it last
15:40year.
15:41And here we are a year later kind of saying the same thing, is it's going to be
15:44a really tough line for him to straddle here because we know what's looming in
15:522027.
15:52We're not stupid.
15:54People are doing countdowns already into the 2027 draft.
15:57Well, I'm not there yet.
15:59There are so many QBs that are going to be talked about.
16:04So if he doesn't win the starting job, how many games is he going to get and how
16:10well does he have to play to persuade the Browns to not use a first-round pick on a
16:15quarterback?
16:152-1-6-4-7-4-0-92.
16:18If you disagree, I'm more than open to it.
16:21I'd love to be wrong, but I have to be accepting what seems to be the truth.
16:25And what I feel is the truth is that by this time next week, we're probably getting
16:29ready to announce Deshaun Watson as the starter.
16:32And I think everything else is kind of a formality.
16:35Did anybody watch Saturday thinking that Deshaun Watson wasn't the best of the three
16:39quarterbacks?
16:41Okay.
16:41So I'm not living in some fantasy world right now, right?
16:43I went to the runner.
16:45Yeah, but he was still the best of the three quarterbacks.
16:48Yeah, I mean, you know, Shador had the flash plays, two of the flash plays, but obviously
16:54the getting the balls knocked down at the line of scrimmage, you know, that's going to be
16:57problematic.
16:58And then there's the stuff that we, again, don't, we can kind of see where they both
17:03made some mistakes in either, or I'm not exactly sure who's responsible for some of
17:08the issues they had getting out of the huddle.
17:10But you're seeing that around the NFL, that's, you know, first preseason game stuff, right?
17:14Every team has some, most of them don't have five of the same offensive linemen from the
17:18year before, and then playing them in the preseason game.
17:20So you're going to see that everywhere.
17:22What we don't know is what it sounded like on the headset and what Todd was, obviously
17:27that's what they're looking at all the way around.
17:29It's not a great football team regardless.
17:31Like it's, it's just not like you have one piece that you think you can pay it, that you
17:35have one guy on that offensive line.
17:37You think you have, you have a future in and that's Spencer Fano that who you may know
17:42you have a future in and that's Spencer Fano.
17:44It's not that great.
17:45So you can tell me about offensive lines all you want.
17:48It's still not going to be that great.
17:49So when he starts there on Saturday and he does have a starting offensive line, guess
17:53what?
17:54It's still ain't going to be that great.
17:55They're not a great football team.
17:56It's not very good.
17:58That's why the job's open.
18:00Do we fail to understand this?
18:01So I can't come up with any more excuses than I already have over the last year because that's
18:06what they're turning into just flat out excuses.
18:08If one guy's better and one guy was better on Saturday, then fine.
18:12Do we really think he was better because he has Elton Jenkins as a center?
18:17Oh, because the one guy had butt sweat on the, on the football.
18:20Like that's never happened in the history of the game for the love of God.
18:25What are we saying to each other here?
18:28What are we holding on to?
18:30And in the grand scheme of things, guys, none of them are going to be here next year.
18:35So what's the point of us ruining relationships with each other over this QB room?
18:40Hell, at least Hoyer and Johnny Manziel, I had a Heisman Trophy winner there in that, in
18:44that quarterback room.
18:45And the other guy was a functional professional quarterback.
18:49The only other thing that you could call functional with, with Johnny Manziel was something I really
18:53don't want to repeat on the air.
18:55I mean, at least that was there.
18:56This is, this is nothing.
19:00I mean, would anybody be surprised if neither are in the NFL next year and we're going to
19:07cuss each other out?
19:08Oh, it's on the offensive line.
19:09Oh, it's this, it's that.
19:10No, come on.
19:11I am excited to hear.
19:12They got, the three of them got chances on Saturday.
19:15One of them got, yeah, they did get a chance with the starting offensive line.
19:18That's still going to struggle at the beginning of the season.
19:21One guy looked the best out of three of them, which still wasn't even writing home to anything.
19:25And that was Deshaun Watson.
19:26I mean, for the love of God, let's be serious with each other here.
19:29I am excited to see after the next, the next interception from Shador Sanders, what new
19:36thing I've never talked about before.
19:37Why are you counting interceptions already?
19:39Well, I'm about to explain it.
19:41That's what I'm getting at.
19:42I'm excited to see what brand new thing that I've never talked about before when it comes
19:47to quarterbacks, what I'm going to be talking about next time.
19:49And that's what I'm getting tired of the most.
19:50I'm getting tired of pussyfooting around it.
19:52Today, it was butt sweat.
19:53Next time, it's going to be the chemicals that were released because of a fracking operation.
19:57You play.
19:57Is it going to be the Indian burial ground?
20:00We're going to be too close to the subservice station.
20:02The conjuring.
20:03The substation.
20:04We're going to be too close to that.
20:05And whatever happens.
20:06I don't know.
20:07I'm tired of coming up with new and different ways to find excuses for somebody.
20:10That might be the most entertaining part of this quarterback.
20:12I've just accepted it.
20:13Do I want Deshaun Watson to start?
20:15I think that everybody knows over the last four years, I never wanted to trade for him.
20:19I don't want him to start.
20:21I can only go by what's in front of me and accept the truth of the matter.
20:24And the truth of the matter is that one guy played better than the other two.
20:27And it wasn't like the one guy was playing with the 85 Bears defense and the Dallas Cowboys
20:33offensive line of the 90s in front of him.
20:35And the other two were playing with high schoolers.
20:37They ain't that good.
20:39They're not going to win a lot of games.
20:41That's why guys like Tony didn't even bother to watch the preseason game.
20:44Not Lyme of the guy in Columbia Station.
20:47Because they know what this year is going to be.
20:50And so I'm not going to sit here and waste my time and anybody else is trying to find
20:54every single excuse to try to wrap myself up and make myself feel better.
20:58Eventually Shador will play, but it ain't going to be week one.
