Synopsis

There was always a certain loneliness in the way
Kazuma carried himself.

I first met him in a place that felt like a
backwater of the city. He’d been abandoned by his
parents when he was a child, and even in the homes
where he was placed, he was shunned as a
“freeloader” and lived amid violence and abuse.
The countless bruises etched into his body were
proof of just how cold a world he’d lived in.

“I don’t have any parents. There’s not a single
thing I can trust,”

Kazuma would often say with a wry smile as he
exhaled cigarette smoke. Behind his piercing gaze,
there was a fragility—as if he were always on edge.
We hung out together, getting into trouble and
glaring down at adults, desperately trying to hold
onto our place in the world.

One day, Kazuma met a girl. Her name was Yuki, and
she had a smile as bright as a sunflower.

He started to change after he began dating Yuki.
Kazuma, who had been so rough around the edges,
started talking about nothing but her every time he
saw me.

“Hey, listen to this. Yuki made me a bento today.
It looked a little messy, but it was the best thing
I’ve ever tasted.”

Kazuma’s face, as he scratched his head shyly, no
longer looked like that of a “rowdy delinquent.”
It was the face of a man who had experienced, for
the first time, the joy of being unconditionally
accepted and loved by someone. To him, Yuki wasn’t
just a girlfriend. She was the place he could call
home—the first one he’d ever had—and the only
“light” he could trust in his life.

He was working two part-time jobs he wasn’t used
to, all to buy a ring for their one-year anniversary,
and he looked truly happy.
But fate was far too cruel.

One day, a year into their relationship, Yuki was
taken from us in a sudden car accident.

From that day on, all contact with Kazuma ceased.
I called him countless times and visited his
apartment, but there was no answer. Just imagining
how desperate he must be made my chest tighten.

Five days later, when I finally got through to him,
Kazuma’s voice on the other end of the line was
hoarse, like that of a dead man.

“…Where are you? Everyone’s worried about you.”
“……”
“Hey, where are you?”
“…I just want to die.”

After a brief silence, the merciless dial tone rang
out.

My friends and I rushed over to his run-down
apartment. We pounded on the door over and over,
almost breaking it down.

“Kazuma! Open up! It’s me!”

There was no answer. But right on the other side of
the door, I could hear the sound of someone
sniffling. Shaky breaths and sobs.

And then, a faint, soul-wrenching whisper seeped
through.

“There’s… no one… left…”

The moment I heard those words, my breath caught in
my throat.
Even though we were right there in front of him.
Even though we were here, pounding on the door
desperately and calling his name. In his heart,
because Yuki was gone, it was as if every single

00:19I don't have any parents.
00:20There's nothing I can believe in.
00:23While exhaling cigarette smoke
00:25Kazuma often laughed like that.
00:27Behind that sharp gaze
00:29There was a certain vulnerability about him, as if he was always afraid.
00:32We were hanging out and doing bad things
00:33By glaring at the adults
00:35They were desperately trying to protect their place in the world.
00:38One day, Kazuma met a young girl.
00:41Yuki was a girl with a smile like a sunflower.
00:44He changed after he started dating Yuki.
00:47Kazuma, who had been so desolate
00:49Every time we met, he started talking about her all the time.
00:52Hey, listen to me.
00:53Yuki created a tradition for me today.
00:57It was awkward-looking, though.
00:58He's the best in the world.
01:00Kazuma scratched his head, looking embarrassed.
01:02He was no longer the mischievous delinquent he once was.
01:04For the first time, I was unconditionally accepted by someone.
01:06It was the face of a man who had known the joy of being loved.
01:09To him, Yuki was more than just a girlfriend.
01:12The first time I've ever held one in my hands
01:14It is my home
01:15It was the only light I could believe in in my life.
01:18I'm going to buy a ring to commemorate our first anniversary.
01:20Working multiple part-time jobs that I'm not used to
01:22He looked really happy.
01:24But fate was far too cruel.
01:27One day, after we had been dating for a year...
01:29Yuki was in a sudden car accident.
01:31He is a person who will never return.
01:32From that day on, I lost contact with Kazuma.
01:35I called many times and visited the apartment,
01:37No response.
01:38How desperate he is
01:40Just imagining it made my heart ache.
01:43Five days later, when I finally got through on the phone...
01:45Kazuma's voice was hoarse, like that of a dead man.
01:48Where are you?
01:50Everyone is worried about you.
01:52Hey, where are you?
01:53I want to die.
01:54After a short silence
01:56A loud, piercing noise echoed.
01:59I was with my friends
02:00I rushed to his dilapidated apartment.
02:02He pounded on the door repeatedly, almost to the point of breaking it.
02:05Open up, Kazuma.
02:06It's me.
02:07No reply.
02:08But just beyond the door
02:10I heard someone sniffling.
02:12When you tremble you can't breathe and you sob
02:14And what was faintly leaking out was
02:15It was a voice so small it felt like it was tearing away at your soul.
02:18There's no one left.
02:20The moment I heard those words
02:21I stopped breathing.
02:23Even though we're right in front of you
02:25I knocked on the door desperately
02:26We're here, calling out your name.
02:29In his heart
02:31Because Yuki is gone
02:32All humans have disappeared from the world.
02:35Idiot
02:36I'm here, aren't I?
02:37Open it up
02:38He kept screaming.
02:39There was no reply ever again.
02:41Even as night deepened, the door remained closed.
02:43We
02:44I'll come again tomorrow.
02:45I had no choice but to take them and leave.
02:47That
02:47Little did I know it would be the last time I'd see him.
02:50Kazuma
02:50In the deep forest
02:51He was found to have taken his own life.
02:53The day of the funeral
02:55It was ironically sunny.
02:56That guy
02:57He said he had no one.
02:59The venue was surprisingly
03:01Many people were gathered.
03:02school teacher
03:03Old bad friends
03:05relatives
03:05And even Yuki's family who passed away
03:07Everyone shed tears
03:09I was saddened by his untimely death.
03:11I gazed at Kazuma's face as he slept in the coffin.
03:14I squeezed out a voice that was not a sound.
03:16Hey
03:16Kazuma
03:17Look at this
03:18Since you're gone
03:19He's so sad.
03:21There were so many of them!
03:22You weren't alone.
03:24You
03:25So many people loved him!
03:27But
03:28My voice can no longer reach him.
03:30That was what he wanted most.
03:32The feeling of being loved
03:34After he passed away
03:36It took shape
03:37Unable to wipe away the tears that were overflowing
03:39I just stood there, frozen.
03:41Kazuma
03:42If I could meet you again
03:43I wanted to tell them, even if it meant breaking down that door.
03:46The person who loves you
03:48He was right next to me.
03:49The world
03:50I wasn't as cold as you thought.
