11:27the gospel according to st. John chapter 16 I have told you all these things so

12:40wrong concerning sin righteousness and judgment concerning sin because they do
12:47not believe in me concerning righteousness because I am going to the
12:52father and you will see me no longer and concerning judgment because the ruler of
12:59this world has been condemned I have many more things to say to you but you
13:06cannot bear them now but when he the spirit of truth comes he will guide you
13:12into all truth for he will not speak on his own authority but will speak whatever he
13:19hears and will tell you what is to come he will glorify me because he will receive
13:26from me what is mine and will tell it to you everything that the father has is
13:33mine that is why I said the spirit will receive from me what is mine and will tell
13:39it to you this is the word of the Lord thanks be to God the great aim of the Lord
13:53Jesus in his final conversations with his Apostles was to convince them of their
13:59perfect union with himself they were the branches of the living vine they were his
14:07beloved and confidential friends were these revelations made merely to assure them of
14:15privilege merely to make them happy in the consciousness of an honorable and
14:20inseparable relation absolutely not this spiritual fellowship was to be the power
14:29for holy service and the motive to patient endurance it is in this last
14:35respect that in the verses before us our Lord replied relied upon the revelation
14:42already made as sufficient to secure his disciples from being offended with him he
14:49felt that having explained the community of life and interest subsisting between
14:55himself and his own he might open up before them the prospect of persecution for
15:03warned they would thus be forearmed he treated them herein not as children but as soldiers
15:11in a spiritual war whose allegiance he did not doubt and of whose fortitude he was most perfectly assured
15:22it was no new thing in the world that men should be pursued with bitter hostility for their devotion to
15:29truth to duty to righteousness to God
15:34the history of Israel contained but too many illustrations of the animosity
15:41with which the good have been assailed by those to whom their life and testimony were a rebuke
15:48Jesus foresaw that confessors and martyrs were to render a service in his kingdom both by establishing the faith upon
15:57a basis of hard trial and proof and by extending the truth amongst unbelievers
16:04Jesus here refers to two ways in which his disciples could experience the hostility of an unbelieving world
16:15doubtless the reference here is to the Jews even during our Lord's ministry those who confessed him were in some
16:23instances excluded from the synagogue and when the church was constituted by the descent of the spirit and especially when
16:31the broad designs of the
16:32of Christianity as a religion of Christianity as a religion not for Israel only but for mankind in all in
16:39total were clearly exhibited then the hostility of the bigoted among the Jewish leaders and the Jewish populace with no
16:48no bounds reverencing everything connected with the law and the prophets the preachers of Christ would fain have resorted to
16:58the synagogues of old would fain have reasoned out of scriptures
17:02with a view of proving that Jesus was the Messiah and of showing how his religion realized all the types
17:09and predictions of Judaism
17:14but the merit and the glory of Christianity was in the eyes of the legalist and the formalist its chief
17:21offense and the sharp line was drawn over which the followers of the Nazarene were not allowed to step
17:31the Jews did as we know from the record of the Acts of the Apostles even in the very earliest
17:37years of the history of the Christian faith carry out their hostility so far as to inflict capital punishment upon
17:46a Christian advocate
17:48as example by Saint Stephen
17:52but it seems as if our Lord in this prediction is looking further forward to events which would follow the
17:59proclamation of the gospel amongst the Gentiles
18:03the annals the annals of the church of Christ are rich indeed with instances of martyrdom and it has passed
18:12into a proverb that the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church
18:19our Lord conceded that the motive to much of the persecution that should assail the professors of the faith was
18:28a conscientious and even religious motive
18:33events have confirmed this no doubt there have been persecutors who have acted from interested or selfish motives
18:43but there have been those who persecute Christians in the belief that they were doing God a service
18:50and the years of Saint Paul before his conversion are a particular example of this
18:57offering to him an acceptable sacrifice in the blood of the faithful unto death
19:06the Jews particularly were in many instances influenced in their hostility to Christians by a reverence for what they believed
19:16however erroneously to be the perfect religion capable of no addition and no improvement
19:24the professions and claims made first by Jesus and later by his servants on his behalf
19:29were of a very high and authoritative character
19:34Christ was either the son of God or he was an out and out blasphemer
19:40and we know that the latter view was taken by many of the Jewish unbelievers
19:45it is no justification of evil conduct that those guilty of it are sincere
19:51yet sincere ignorance is an extenuation even if it is not a vindication of guilt
20:00alas what evils have been wrought in the name not only of liberty but also of religion
20:09our Lord was a revealer of hearts
20:12he looked upon the profession even below the belief
20:17he penetrated deep into the spiritual desire of men
20:22and was familiar with the hidden springs of thought and of action
20:28there was a reason not necessarily known in every case by the agents themselves
20:34for the actions they would commit
20:37the Lord was able to account for conduct by searching this inner nature
20:43and in so doing he discovered in the spiritual ignorance of the persecutor
20:48the true and all sufficient reason for their attitude and proceedings
20:55they have not known the father nor me he said
21:00they cannot know Christ by the knowledge that is of spiritual appreciation and sympathy
21:06who persecute and slay his friends and the promulgators of his faith
21:12they not only do not know but they totally misunderstand him his character and his mission
21:19if they suppose that God can be pleased when Christians are persecuted
21:25for it is not to be believed that the father can look with satisfaction
21:29upon injuries done to his own son in the person of his followers
21:36had the Jews known Christ they would not have slain the Lord of glory
21:41none who truly knew our Lord could have possibly persecuted his faithful people
21:46in order to do his father service
21:51there was a sympathy between our Lord and his apostles
21:54but that sympathy was not perfect
21:58even in the latest of these quiet conversations between master and disciple
22:03it is evident that the perception of the learners was now and again very dull
22:09and that their response to what he was saying was somewhat inadequate
22:15there is a tone of expostulation almost of rebuke
22:21in this as in other portions of his recorded discourse
22:28concerning himself Jesus had uttered language with both perplexed and distressed his friends
22:34he had spoken of his approaching departure
22:39a prospect which could not but grieve them
22:42and which clearly depressed his hearers
22:45their life was bound up in his life
22:49and separation could not be faced without the sinking of heart
22:55concerning the apostles the Lord had opened a prospect
22:58which dismayed or at least disconcerted them
23:03he had told them very plainly now
23:05that they would be both hated and persecuted
23:08on such an outlook as this could only be gloomy
23:14they were not prepared at this stage
23:16for enduring such tribulations
23:19especially were there to be deprived of the presence and support
23:22visible and tangible of their master
23:28sorrow said to Jesus has filled your heart
23:34he had opened the conversation by asking them to trust in him
23:38and to dismiss fear and trouble from their mind
23:42he had given them reasons for confidence
23:44grounds for hope motives for peace
23:48but they in turn were conscious of their feeble nature
23:53their dependence upon him
23:58they had accordingly no thoughts but for themselves
24:01and as they looked at one another
24:03they must have felt that there was among them
24:08no one upon whom they could lean in the absence of the Lord
24:15and he was going and he would be going soon
24:19how could they possibly keep together
24:22and if they should keep together
24:24what was there going to be for them to do
24:27had not the master done everything without him
24:31where would be the meaning of their fellowship
24:34the purpose of their life
24:36one thinks of the problems at the foot of Mount Tavor
24:40after the transfiguration
24:42when Jesus returned to discover the disciples unable to heal
24:50it is a proof of the reality of their attachment to Jesus
24:54of the bitterness of their disappointment at his departure
24:58that in this hour their souls should be so burdened
25:02and all but overwhelmed with grief
25:07for surely the apostles were absorbed in their grief and trouble
25:12and hence they were prevented by their own depression
25:16from inquiring further into the nature of our Lord's departure
25:22not that they were altogether incurious and careless concerning this
25:29some of them had put questions suggested by the Lord's words
25:33but they sank back at once upon their own condition and prospects
25:38if they had turned away from their own loss
25:41if they had followed Christ's declarations concerning himself with interest and faith
25:46if they had asked for further revelations
25:49they would both have forgotten their personal distress
25:53and they would have received the inspiration and fortitude they needed
25:57as they realized the victory which would follow the Saviour's humiliation
26:03and as they understood that in that victory
26:06they themselves would have a share
26:11experience has shown us that it is a most deleterious practice to direct thought
26:18too much inwardly upon our own sorrows and perplexities
26:23or even upon our joys and comforts
26:27religious progress can only be made by fixing the gaze of the heart
26:32upon him who is infinite excellence and infinite faithfulness
26:39let our principal interest therefore
26:41our most earnest questioning
26:43our most ardent affection
26:45be constantly directed toward him
26:48and then sorrow
26:50and depression
26:52will vanish
26:53and peace will reign
26:57the world enjoyed many benefits
27:00by reason of Christ's presence
27:03let's face it
27:04he healed the sick
27:06he taught the ignorant
27:07and was a kind
27:09wise
27:10and faithful friend
27:11to all men
27:14how much more
27:16then
27:16were the disciples of Jesus indebted to that presence
27:22his immediate friends owed their all
27:25their very selves to him
27:26and could not look forward to losing him
27:29without total dismay
27:32and yet
27:33our Lord taught
27:35that it was really for his people's good
27:37that he would lead them
27:38and the experience of the Christian centuries
27:41has proved the wisdom
27:44and truth of his teaching
27:51the ascension of Christ
27:53the ascension of Christ
27:54was the occasion
27:56of the descent of the Comforter
28:01the Holy Spirit
28:02was indeed no stranger to our humanity
28:05even before the Lord's coming
28:07but his influence
28:09would be far more widely diffused
28:11and more powerfully active
28:13than ever previously
28:17why the coming of the Spirit was made
28:19in the wise counsels of God
28:21dependent upon the departure of Jesus
28:25we cannot completely understand
28:28but the events of Pentecost
28:30are a matter of scriptural history
28:32the records of this dispensation
28:36remind us how the Spirit
28:38has convinced the world of sin
28:40of righteousness
28:41and of judgment
28:44the church has never since our Lord's ascension
28:46ceased to enjoy
28:48the enlightening
28:49the quickening
28:50and the sanctifying influences
28:52of its spiritual Comforter
28:58it was necessary
29:00that the Son of God
29:01and the Saviour of mankind
29:02dwell upon earth
29:05and by the deeds of his ministry
29:07and by the death of sacrifice
29:10reveal God to his sinful children
29:13furnishing in this way
29:14a basis for the spiritual life of humanity
29:19a revealed object of faith
29:22was thus provided
29:24but when the manifestation was complete
29:27it was withdrawn
29:29and the special excellence
29:31of the Christian faith
29:33lies here
29:34it is a faith which calls for
29:36indeed justifies and encourages
29:38faith
29:40faith in an unseen
29:41but mighty
29:43ever-present
29:44ever-gracious
29:45Redeemer
29:46and Lord
29:48in them
29:50in him
29:51though now we see him not
29:53yet believing
29:54we rejoice
29:58so far as we can see
30:00the bodily presence of Jesus upon earth

30:50to all of mankind
30:52through the blessings of our
30:54Savior's spiritual presence
30:56authority and grace
31:00if Jesus were still on earth
31:03who would not be content
31:04to live and loath to die
31:07what prospect
31:08would have reconciled his friends
31:10to death
31:13but our divine
31:14friend has gone on before us
31:16and we can only join him
31:18upon the condition of the taking
31:20down of this perishable tent
31:22in which we dwell today
31:25it is the prospect
31:26of going to him
31:27who has gone away from the earth
31:30which lends brightness
31:31to our Christian future
31:34his prayer has secured that
31:36where he is
31:37there also his friends
31:39and disciples are waiting for us
31:43accordingly
31:44an apostle could speak
31:45of removing hence as being
31:47with Christ which is far better
31:51and there is no prospect
31:52so dear
31:53to the Christian's heart
31:55as that of ever being
31:57with the Lord
32:03let us pray

32:07we beseech you
32:08O Lord
32:09your church
32:10with your perpetual mercy
32:13because the frailty of man
32:15without you
32:15cannot but fail
32:18keep us ever by your help
32:20from all things hurtful
