11:41And I am going to the Father.
11:46So they said again and again,
11:48What is this he is saying a little time?
11:50His words are not clear to us.
11:55Jesus saw that they had his desire to put the question to them.
11:59So he said to them,
12:01Is this what you are questioning with one another?
12:04Why I said after a little time you will see me no longer,
12:07And then again after a little time you will see me.
12:12Truly I say to you,
12:13You will be weeping and sorrowing,
12:16But the world will be glad.
12:18You will be sad,
12:19But your sorrow will be turned into joy.
12:23When a woman is about to give birth,
12:25She has sorrow because her hour has come,
12:28But after when she has given birth to the child,
12:32The pain is put from her mind,
12:34By the joy that a man has come into the world.
12:39So you have sorrow now,
12:40But I will see you again,
12:42And your hearts will be glad,
12:44And no one will take away your joy.
12:47On that day you will put no questions to me.
12:50Truly I say to you,
12:52Whatever request you make to the Father,
12:55He will give it to you in my name.
12:57Up to now you have made no request in my name.
13:01Do so and it will be answered,

13:14But will give you knowledge of the Father clearly.

13:47His disciples said,

14:09See a time is coming.

14:23I have said all these things to you,
14:25So that in me you may have peace.
14:28In the world you have trouble,

14:45In today's passage,
14:46We come to the crux,
14:48Of what Jesus was trying to explain,
14:50Before he was to be taken away,
14:52From the disciples.
14:56Just as an interesting aside,
14:58We read the opening verses,
15:00Opening words of verse 17,
15:03Which John says,
15:06Some of his disciples,
15:09With perhaps the barely concealed suggestion,
15:12That these did not include the author,
15:14John,
15:15Who had already figured it out.
15:17But we digress.
15:20Seriously though,
15:21Jesus was doing his best,
15:22To reassure the disciples that,
15:24Even if they were to think,
15:26That everything was finished,
15:28That they were all going to be killed,
15:30Nothing could be further from the truth.
15:34Jesus was not saying goodbye,
15:36But good night,
15:38In the way,
15:39A loving parent says that to his children,
15:41With the implicit promise,
15:43Of being reunited with them,
15:45When the sun arises,
15:46And the darkness is vanished.
15:51It can be very hard indeed,
15:53To be apart from family,
15:54And loved ones,
15:55Even for the shortest of periods,
15:58Especially,
15:59When you do not know,
16:00How long it will be,
16:01Until you will be together again.
16:04The disciples had clearly understood,
16:06That Jesus was going away,
16:08But they did not understand,
16:10When,
16:11Why,
16:11Or for how long.
16:13This talk,
16:14Of their weeping and wailing,
16:16Turning to joy one day,
16:17Was confusing.
16:20Indeed,
16:20To be honest,
16:21If they had fully grasped,
16:23What was going to happen,
16:24Over the next few days,
16:26Perhaps,
16:26We would have read of their rejoicing,
16:28In the streets of Jerusalem,
16:30Instead of gathering in fright,
16:32Locked away in their upper room.
16:36For life of the Christian,
16:38Is one of great joy,
16:40But often tinged,
16:41With a great sadness also,
16:43A sadness in respect,
16:45Of the state of the world,
16:46We live in,
16:47The sin we see every day,
16:50And the stubborn pride,
16:51Of the friends and loved ones,
16:53Who refuse the love of Jesus.
16:57The joy of the world,
16:58Is transient,
16:59And will be blown away,
17:00On the wind,
17:01For the joy of the Christian,
17:03Will survive,
17:03And give bloom,
17:05To the eternal flower,
17:06Of the glory of God's kingdom.
17:11Jesus was preparing,
17:12The disciples for what was to come,
17:15Although they had little idea,
17:17Of what it was,
17:18He was talking about.
17:21We have the benefit of hindsight,
17:23And we know exactly,
17:24What Jesus was talking of,
17:26His crucifixion,
17:28Death,
17:29And his resurrection,
17:30After three days.
17:33Before he returned,
17:35To the father,
17:37He used the analogy,
17:39Of the pregnant woman,
17:40Who endures the sorrow,
17:41And pain of labour,
17:43And then the joy,
17:44Of the birth of the child,
17:46In the same way,
17:47The disciples would endure,
17:49The sorrow of loss,
17:50After the crucifixion,
17:53To be replaced,
17:54With the joy,
17:55Of the resurrection.
17:59We should find some reassurance,
18:02That the disciples,
18:03Had problems understanding this,
18:06For it reminds us,
18:07That they were like us,
18:09Mere humans,
18:10And simple country people.
18:13With the possible exception,
18:15Of John,
18:16They had probably had little,
18:17Or no education,
18:18Other than what they had received,
18:19In the synagogue,
18:21And they had no knowledge,
18:22Of the deep theology,
18:24That we may have,
18:25Or any other such matters,
18:28For Jesus,
18:29To have taken them,
18:30And turned them,
18:30Into the teachers,
18:31Of the faith,
18:32Of the acts of the apostles,
18:34Was surely a miracle,
18:35And if he could do so,
18:37With them,
18:37He could do so,
18:39With you.
18:42Jesus brings understanding,
18:43To all of us,
18:45We should pray constantly,
18:46That our eyes,
18:47And our hearts,
18:48Are open to the truth,
18:49And the miracles,
18:50Of the spirit today.
18:54Before going much further,
18:56It is important,
18:57To set the disciples concern,
18:59In its proper context.
19:01These are not stupid men,
19:03For they are certainly aware,
19:06Of the dangers,
19:07That Jesus was facing,
19:09And also that by implication,
19:10There is a share in that danger,
19:12For each and every one of them,
19:14By association.
19:16They are rattled,
19:17By the thought,
19:17That he is going to leave them.
19:20Because they do not understand,
19:21The meaning and implication,
19:22Of this for them.
19:24They have left their families,
19:26And loved ones behind.
19:29Most of them,
19:29Appears to have left,
19:30Their livelihoods behind.
19:33The fishermen,
19:34Possibly,
19:35Could have gone back,
19:36To their fishing boats.
19:37And after a while,
19:38It is possible,
19:40That they could have had,
19:41A more normal life.
19:43But what of Matthew?
19:45There was nothing left for him,
19:48Waiting in Galilee.
19:50It is quite possible,
19:52That some of the others,
19:52Were in similar positions.
19:55We do not know,
19:56What their occupations have been.
19:59They had joined Jesus,
20:01In the thought,
20:02That there was a lifetime,
20:03Of work ahead for them.
20:05They were of course,
20:06Correct in this,
20:07But not quite,
20:08In the way that they had imagined.
20:15Jesus left us,
20:16A number of promises.
20:19The first promise,
20:20That whatever,
20:22We will be asked for,
20:23In the name of Jesus,
20:25Will be granted.
20:27This is a restatement,
20:28Of the promise,
20:29Already given several times,
20:31In this chapter.
20:34The second promise,
20:35Was that the things,
20:36Which seemed mysterious,
20:38And could not be understood,
20:39Will shortly be made clear.
20:42When the spirit,
20:43Comes upon them,
20:44They will understand everything,
20:46And be able to teach,
20:47On all things,
20:48In complete confidence.
20:52The third promise,
20:53Was that all the disciples,
20:55And by extension,
20:56All believers,
20:58Will have a direct line,
20:59To God the Father,
21:01Because he,
21:02Himself,
21:03Loves you.
21:04Because you have loved me.
21:07It will not be necessary,
21:08To ask Jesus,
21:09To ask the Father,
21:10On our behalf.
21:12God the Father,
21:13Wants to hear from us,
21:15The very ones,
21:16He loves,
21:17So very much.
21:21Even so,
21:22Sometimes we just,
21:23Cannot grasp things.
21:25It doesn't matter,
21:26How many times,
21:27Things are explained to us,
21:29It just does not sink in,
21:31It does not register.
21:34I am quite sure,
21:35I am quite sure,
21:35We can remember things,
21:36From when we were at school,
21:37That we found,
21:38Particularly difficult.
21:40I know I can,
21:42And it was something,
21:43That caused me,
21:43A great deal of difficulty,
21:44In my time.
21:46The problem was,
21:48That it was just a subject,
21:49That was too abstract.
21:52Because once I had left school,
21:54And had to deal with the same thing,
21:55In the real world,
21:56Suddenly,
21:57It became amazingly simple.
22:00The disciples found themselves,
22:02In a similar situation.
22:05Jesus had spent,
22:07No less than the first 28 verses,
22:10Of this chapter of John,
22:12Explaining things to them,
22:14And yet they still,
22:15Failed to understand.
22:19Finally,
22:20In verse 29,
22:20The message,
22:22Is understood.
22:24Not that Jesus,
22:25Had explained it,
22:27In particularly different terms,
22:29But the time had come,
22:31For them to understand.
22:35We have already considered,
22:36On other occasions,
22:38How it is,
22:39Never possible,
22:40For us to understand,
22:41All the issues of heaven,
22:42While we are here on the earth.
22:45The great mysteries,
22:46That only those in heaven,
22:48Can fully understand,
22:49And appreciate.
22:51Sometimes the spirit,
22:52Enables us to have an insight,
22:54Into some of these mysteries.
22:57But they are just that,
22:58Mere insights.
23:01Today,
23:02It is not that we read,
23:03Of some new explanation,
23:04By Jesus.
23:06But that the minds,
23:07Of the disciples were opened,
23:09Just a crack,
23:10Just sufficiently,
23:12For them to be able,
23:12To grasp,
23:13The message,
23:14He was sharing with them.
23:19The passage then,
23:20Continued with a prophecy,
23:22Which was to come true,
23:23So very shortly afterwards.
23:26Jesus was about to be arrested,
23:28And the disciples would run away,
23:30Returning to their lodgings,
23:32Leaving their master alone,
23:34To face his persecutors,
23:36His humiliation,
23:37And his death.
23:39Yes,
23:40It is very easy for us,
23:42To stand up for something,
23:43When we are part of a crime,
23:45But when the going gets tough,
23:47It is still easier,
23:48To put our heads down,
23:49And wait for things to calm down.
23:53As the disciples,
23:54Were about to discover,
23:56With the Holy Spirits,
23:57In our hearts,
23:58It is impossible to be silent,
24:00Or seek safety,
24:01When our love for Jesus,
24:03Is challenged.
24:04Yes,
24:08Let us pray.
24:12Keep,
24:12We beseech you,
24:14O Lord,
24:15Your church,
24:16With your perpetual mercy,
24:18Because the frailty of man,
24:20Without you,
24:21Cannot but fail.
