Often there are complaints that the standard of coaching in T&T is not good enough to make local athletes competitive on the international stage. Well, the T&T Table Tennis Association took a step towards securing a point for coaches by affording them a level one coaching course certificate. It's a start, as those in authority say more training is to follow.

00:0029 coaches took part in the Level 1 International Table Tennis Coaching Course over a 5-day period.
00:07President of the Trinidad and Tobago Table Tennis Association, Sharon Bravo-Philip,
00:12believes it was needed to improve the level in the country in the absence of qualified coaches.
00:17We are here today. Today is the last day of our ITTF Level 1 coaching course.
00:23It started on the 20th and today is the last day of that course.
00:27What was the objective of the course?
00:30We are building capacity from our strategic plan.
00:34Ideally, currently we don't have any certified Level 1 coaches.
00:39It has been nine years since our last coaching course.
00:43So this is us at ground zero building back from there.
00:47It's not just theory that was put into play as coaches had to practice what they were taught.
00:52We are hoping to build on this so that early next year we will do a Level 2 with the
00:58same cohort.
01:00All right, what are they going to do today?
01:02Today, so we are at the stage where they have to plan their tournament.
01:06So you have those who will be at the head table, those who are umpires, coaches and players.
01:12They will have an hour to execute the entire tournament.
01:15The coaching instructor says they will be monitored over an extended period of time to measure their improvement.
01:21Actually, all the results is going to be, I don't know, maybe one year more.
01:28We will see in one year how is this good or not good.
01:32We will see how the coaches catch all this information and how they put in March.
01:39Maybe I will come back in the next month and maybe you can ask me in that moment.
01:44However, he was impressed that they all passed the course.
01:48This is maybe the first time I give a course for 29 persons and all of them passed.
01:53All of them, 29 persons passed successfully this course.
01:58And this is really good.
02:00There is not usually so many passes.
02:02Now, the performances on the board in time will be the ultimate assessment that will either sink them or serve
02:09them well at the international and regional stage.
02:13Sergio Dufour, TP6port.
